The record keeps spinning, Buddies! Another brief pod-only show here on Vinyl Community Podcasts, this time joined by friend of the pod Jason (Spinz Vinyl) who recently took the plunge to selling records on the ecommerce platform Whatnot. If you are unfamiliar, Whatnot is an application/website that is hosted by individual sellers (sometimes including brick & mortar shop owners) selling their wares through the medium. It extends beyond vinyl records and includes sports cards, video games, clothing, shoes (and a ton more). Jason recently tried his hand at selling records in conjunction with his partnership with MION Records, and held two auctions right out of the gate. Here he shares he thoughts on the platform, why he is selling records there, how he chooses titles to sell there, and (most importantly) would he do it again (SPOILER: he is on March 30th at 12pm PST/3pm EST). In one of the most overdue 'sodes in Vinyl Community Podcasts history, we finally - FINALLY - get the OG of the Vinyl Community - Brandon (MrHoffame) in the hot seat of the VCP exclusive series: Mind of The Record Collector. Aloha Buddies! One constant in the ever changing record collecting hobby of ours is the pre-imminent tool we use to grow and develop our collections: Discogs. Unquestionably the largest vinyl record database out there, it has made it easier and more accessible to collect our favorite pieces of music, predominantly on vinyl. Likewise, the marketplace aspect of the platform has helped to bridge the divide from the rare and limited releases to collectors across the globe. In the past few weeks, the head leadership at Discogs has popped up on a couple Vinyl Community channels to discuss their business, and the timing of these chats without any high level launch/product change/etc. is curious (to me). Another channel in the community (Tom c/o High Rant District) also noticed this and recently shared some takes that pushed my curiosity into overdrive. This 'sode talks about those confluences, my own thoughts on Discogs in it's current state, and things that I strongly feel need to be addressed to continue to give buyers and sellers alike confidence in using the platform (even in the face of next to no competition in this space; a space they have essentially created themselves). Joined by Billy Hurst, owner of RiverBend Records in Godfrey, Illinois, we pick his brain on just how he turned the dream most record collectors have into a bona fide reality. Before we get there, we learn about Billy's experience as part of the "Vinyl Community" on YouTube, his background in record collecting, and then what led him to the fateful decision to start a record store in the middle of a pandemic (really). RiverBend Records has been opened for just over three years, and there have been many learnings and challenges that Billy will share with us. Since opening, his shop has endeared itself not just to the local community (and St. Louis metro area), but has gained a following selling records through the Facebook platform on Monday nights. New treat for you Buddies on this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. As the "vinyl resurgence" continues to go full speed ahead, the mastering side of things is in great hands with Cicely and other mastering engineers taking the baton from their predecessors. Something different for you with this one, Buddies. For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Chad and Drew from Vintage Media Grading (VMG). The guys were kind enough to inform and share what their business is about: namely, introducing a new way to collect vinyl into the marketplace. Taking cues from other collectible spaces like sports cards, comic books, etc., VMG offers third party grading services on vinyl records, including "slabbing", which is commonplace in those aforementioned hobbies. As VMG has been gaining awareness in the hobby, there's some natural questions that come from this new way to collect vinyl records. Listen ahead to learn more about this alternative to traditional vinyl collecting, additional services VMG offers (the "V" doesn't mean "vinyl" for a reason), and also the origins of this new company (hint: we have some fellow record collectors in our midst).
