257 - The Art Of Recording And Mixing Score With Laurence Anslow

Laurence Anslow, who recently recorded and mixed the score for the recent Percy Jackson series and also worked on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, joins us this week.  He is at the top of the game, and yet his workflows as a score recordist and mixer, are a complete mystery to many in audio post.  So I asked him to come on the show and talk us through what a orchestral score recording session is like, how he delivers his tracks and who he is interacting with the most from the rest of the sound team. I learned a lot while talking with Laurence and I hope you are able to gain a bunch of knowledge as well. Tonebenders ran episodes with members of the sound teams of all five nominees in the "Best Achievement In Sound" category at this year's Oscars. After that is Erik Aadahl discussing how explosions can't just go "boom" they have to reflect the plot when they happen in the story. Finally we have Johnnie Burn explaining how the two films he worked on last year, Zone Of Interest & Poor Things, intersected with each other. 216 - Mark Jenkin Director of Bait and Enys Men

BAFTA Award winning director Mark Jenkin joins us to talk about his unique approach to sound for his films. He shoots his films on a bolex camera, entirely without sound and only adds ADR (which he records himself) after the film is edited. He also writes and records the score himself. All of this to make utterly unique films that have found both an audience and critical acclaim in the UK and beyond. 211 - Women Talking

This talk with the sound team behind director Sarah Polly's new film, Women Talking, was recorded on location at Formosa Studios in Toronto. The film offered some surprisingly difficult sound issues, including an incredibly tricky dialog clean up and edit. Predominantly in a single location, sound was left to tell the story outside those walls. Supervising Sound Editors Jane Tattersall & David McCallum as well as re-recording mixer Joe Morrow give us a deep dive on how this soundtrack came together.
