As Halloween approaches and the leaves change, it's the perfect time to explore one of the most controversial and notorious haunted attractions: McKamey Manor. Known as the most extreme haunted house experience, McKamey Manor has been pushing the boundaries of fear since 2001. Originally, it started as a backyard haunt in a quiet San Diego neighborhood, with the classic jump scares and eerie sounds we all expect. But over time, McKamey Manor transformed into something much darker—a psychological endurance test designed to push people to their limits, both mentally and physically.
Reports detail participants enduring grueling challenges, often leaving with bloody faces, broken bones, and swollen lips—not to mention the lasting psychological effects. What began as a spooky attraction evolved into an intense and controversial experience, sparking debates on the limits of horror and personal endurance. This week, we're taking you inside McKamey Manor to see what lies beyond the fear.

A brutal, deadly attack on the Smith family was discovered on July 30, 2015, in Pensacola, Florida. Three family members, Voncile, Richard, and John Smith, were found beaten and bloodied and found under piles of clothes in the home. A police press conference was held with the shocking idea that this was the work of witchcraft, and what scared the community even more was that the killer was still at large, possibly looking for the next attack. When the media got their hands on the story, they got creative with their headlines, calling it the Blue Moon Murders or the Wiccan Sacrifice.

Betty Bowman, 32, and her husband, Connor, 30, appeared to have an idyllic life. They met at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy; after graduation, she became an operating room pharmacist, and he started medical school, moonlighting as a poison control specialist. The couple openly maintained an open relationship, agreeing to see other people on the condition of full transparency about any partners. Everything seemed perfect until August 16, when Betty went to the emergency room in Rochester, Minnesota, with severe food poisoning. Over the next four days, her condition inexplicably worsened, leading to her death from organ failure. When Connor attempted to cancel the autopsy and expedite Betty's cremation, her grieving friends became alarmed. Is Connor Bowman trying to cover something up? As suspicions mount, the bitter secrets hidden beneath their perfect facade begin to surface.

In the spring of 2012, a tragic story unfolded in the small, scenic town of North Bend, Washington, which revealed the dark undercurrents running beneath the life of the Keller family. Peter Keller, a 41-year-old man, led his family into a disastrous spiral driven by his own inner demons and possible financial troubles. His wife, Lynnettee, also 41, and their 18-year-old daughter, Kaylene, were outwardly living a pastoral life amid the lush landscapes surrounding their home. However, unknown to even those closest to them, Peter was orchestrating a grim finale.
The devastating culmination of Peter’s secretive planning was the loss of not only his wife and daughter but also the family pets. The incident shocked the community and threw a spotlight on the pressures and hidden crises that can lurk behind a facade of normalcy. As investigators pieced together the events leading up to the tragedy, a complex tapestry of financial strain and personal turmoil began to emerge, challenging the idyllic image of rural life and family solidarity that Peter Keller had portrayed to the world.

This story is hard to listen to, but I feel so drawn to it and have this need to share it on the podcast because I grew up in the same area where this happened, so it’s very near and dear to my heart. I came across this story from someone who shared it with me that I know personally. This may not be a very lengthy episode, but it’s a big one, especially for the family affected. This week’s story involves a child who was murdered in a tragic, horrific way, and because of the nature of this crime, please be advised, especially if you have young ears listening, that the details surrounding this case are graphic and may be disturbing.
This devastating nightmare happened in June 2023. Recently, Pennsylvania’s Attorney General announced on January 11, 2024, that a Lawrence County woman has been arrested on charges related to the abuse and death of her boyfriend’s one-year-old daughter.

You initially see the eccentric, solitary next-door neighbor as an ordinary individual who voluntarily monitors the neighborhood and gives a helping hand to those in need, giving you a sense of security—a thought that makes you realize there’s still good people in the world. However, you are shocked to learn that the person who you thought was harmless lives right next door is in fact a serial killer whose motivations are rooted in the darkest corners. Motives that drive an individual to pursue the most repulsive forms of evil.

Join us on the next episode of Crime Salad where we explore a case of life imitating art. Romance Writer Nancy Brophy wrote an essay on how to get away with murdering your husband. By all accounts, she was happily married to chef Daniel Brophy at the time. But then Dan who worked as a Chef at the Oregon Culinary Institute as an instructor was found murdered by one of his students. Later surveillance cameras would show Nancy's van circling the crime scene while she told police she was still in bed. After being arrested she conveniently couldn't remember what happened during the hour she drove around the murder scene. She chalked up her inconsistencies to shock. However, at the time of her Trial, she testified that she was sure she couldn't have murdered her husband based on the feelings in her heart. Support us! Want ad free listening? The conclusion to the Slayer. In 2006, Michelle Young was a 29 year old beloved wife and mother with an adorable toddler and another baby soon on the way. To all who knew Michelle and Jason Young, they appeared to be the ideal couple living in a picturesque community in Raleigh, North Carolina. All of that came to a sudden end In the early morning hours of November 3rd, 2006 when an intruder brutally strangled Michelle and bludgeoned her to death. Her grieving husband was out of town when her broken body was found the next day by her sister, Meredith Fischer. While calling 911, Meredith was startled to discover her 2 year old niece, hiding under the covers next to her mother's dead body. Leaving behind a tiny trail of toddler sized bloody footprints that told their own story. Could Michelle's husband be responsible for this horrific crime? In March of 2020, Gretchen Anthony began sending texts to family and friends telling them she had tested positive for Covid-19. There was still so much unknown about the virus as the entire world began shutting down. Her family became highly concerned when they couldn't get her on the phone. Many of the texts from Gretchen were filled with poor spelling and grammar. Then she stopped sharing her phone location with her 12 year old daughter. The last text anyone received from Gretchen said she was being transferred to a CDC covid site and would be placed on a ventilator, unable to communicate. After a wellcheck at her home by law enforcement, it became clear that someone was using Covid as an alibi to cover up a horrific crime. In this case, there is no moral about remembering to lock the door behind you. There's no advice on how to dress, where to go, or what to do to stay safe. In this case, 27 year old Lauren Giddings did everything right. She was friendly, compassionate, and caring towards her neighbor, a man a bit younger than her who everyone else thought was a bit too weird. Lauren joked that if he was dangerous, she would be the only one who was spared.... Because she always treated him right and with kindness. But, when she was found murdered during the summer of 2011, she couldn't have been more wrong. Support us! Want ad free listening? Jelani Day was such a dedicated student that when he didn't show up for class on August 24th, 2021, his professor immediately knew something was wrong. Jelani Day was such a caring son that when his mother texted him, and he didn't call her back right away to chat, Carmen Bolden Day knew that something had happened to her baby. When his body was found in the Illinois River in a town he had no connection to weeks after his disappearance, the police seemed content to label his death a suicide or an accident--but with the facts and evidence gathered, Carmen and the rest of Jelani's family are sure that Jelani didn't end up in the water of his own accord. How did a young Black man with so much promise and things to live for wind up in a river of a small town an hour away from his home? Support us! Want ad free listening? It's less than 15 square miles and has about 14,000 residents. But if current trends hold, there's a 1 in 19 chance that you will be a victim of a violent crime, making it one of the most violent areas in the United States. After reading, or listening, to enough true crime, you might find the cases become somewhat formulaic. A person goes missing, a search party is sent out, a body is found, an arrest is ma de. Our case this week, though, is anything but that. Instead of inching closer to a solution, each new update only seems to generate more controversy and mystery around the Murdaugh Family. When it comes to true crime, one of the biggest names that people think of is BTK--a serial killer whose reign of terror over Wichita, Kansas lasted more than 15 years. But while BTK might be the most famous killer, for the people of Wichita, Reginald and Jonathan Carr's week long crime and killing spree caused citizens to fear for their lives both while out and inside their own homes. In the 20 years since the Carr Brothers committed what is now dubbed the Wichita Horror or Wichita Massacre, they have filed multiple appeals, keeping their crimes in headlines in town and preventing closure for the families who lost so much. A few months back, we covered the 2004 case of Lisa Marie Montgomery--a woman who murdered Bobbie Jo Stinnet as she brutally cut open Bobbie Jo's abdomen to take her unborn baby. This case made national headlines, and in 2021, Lisa Marie became the first woman to be executed by the federal government in decades. Our case this week follows a similar trajectory. A 22 year old pregnant woman was lured into a neighbor's apartment, only to be attacked, killed, and had her unborn baby stolen from her womb. In more typical years than what we all experienced in 2020, the holiday seasons mean families are gathering, gifts are exchanged, and for some, it's the most joyous time of the year. On Christmas Eve of 2008, Joseph "Papa Joe" Ortega and his wife Alicia, were hosting a festive holiday party for their children and grandchildren at their home in Covina, California. When they opened the front door that night, while the party was well underway, to a man wearing a Santa Claus costume and holding a large gift-wrapped package, they had no idea the devastation that would ensue when that man opened fire on the unsuspecting family. To give you a little bit of background, Vanessa Guillen was born and raised in Houston, Texas where she lived with her mother, father, and five other siblings. She loved to run, play sports, particularly soccer, and was an avid weightlifter. Vanessa, like the rest of her family, was devoutly Catholic, and committed to her education, graduating in the top 15% of her high school class. According to Vanessa's mom, she had talked about joining the military since she was 10 years old and when she graduated from high school Vanessa enlisted right away in the US Army. Like any mother, Gloria Guillen was worried for her daughter after she enlisted, but Vanessa was adamant and wanted to defend her country. Vanessa was particularly close with her older sister, Mayra who recently turned 22. Mayra flew out for Vanessa's graduation from basic training, and supported her sister's ambition to be in the army, even when their mother wasn't quite so sure. Mayra remembers her sister telling their mother, who only speaks Spanish, about her choice to enlist: "Without a doubt, mami, it is the law of life."
