They Walk Among Us – UK True Crime

A motorist became curious when he noticed something in a lay-by on the A464 road east of Shifnal to Wolverhampton. It was 9.30 on a cold winter’s morning. In a split-second decision, the driver decided to pull in to get a closer look. When he explored the undergrowth, he came to the realisation that he was looking at a dead body. It appeared as though a half-hearted attempt was made to cover the remains. Bushes had been placed to shield some of the body from prying eyes. Whoever had done it hadn't taken the time to thoroughly conceal the victim who bore the marks of being badly beaten…

As she waited for a break in the downpour, something heavy landed with a thud next to her. Smeaton's Tower, a landmark on the waterfront, is a reminder of the city’s maritime heritage. Built in 1759, it originally served as a lighthouse on the Eddystone Reef before being decommissioned and meticulously rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound and the surrounding coastline. Standing 22 metres high, the red and white tower previously guided ships in the darkness. In late 2021, it was again illuminated, although this time, it was not to guide those at sea home safely, but to raise awareness and say goodbye to someone who was taken from their loved ones in the worst way imaginable…

The sound of music spilled out of the pub. The White Stag in Monkton was rammed for a Monday. It was karaoke night that attracted the crowd of around 100 people who were finishing off the long Easter weekend with a few drinks and a singalong. Mark McGurk was home a few doors down from the pub when he heard what sounded like an engine backfiring on the street. He got up to look out the window. Mark saw an eye-catching American-style car speeding away, so he decided to go outside to see what the commotion was about. The noise from the White Stag wasn’t loud enough to drown out the hysterical cries of a woman, which sounded like they were coming from the house next door. Mark could hear her screaming, “It’s a gun! It’s a gun!”...

Following the end of World War II, many projects that had been put on hold were resumed. Trewidden Vean and Nanquitho, areas between Penzance and Land’s End in Cornwall, were flooded to create Drift Reservoir. The 65-acre reservoir provides drinking water for West Penwith, and, over the years, has become increasingly popular with bird watchers. In 2018, record temperatures and a heat wave caused the water level to drop by almost three metres. The remnants of the Lost Valley were partially uncovered, but three years later, something much more sinister was brought to the surface of Drift Reservoir….

The officer called out to identify himself, but there was no response from behind the closed door. He tried to open it but was met by resistance. After managing to wedge the bedroom door a few inches, PC Francis saw the body of an elderly man on the floor. Blood and brain matter were pooling around his head. As PC Francis radioed for support and the London Ambulance Service, he heard a voice say, “You’re too late. A man in his mid-sixties wearing a light-coloured casual jacket and dark trousers caught the couple’s attention. Concerningly, he was clenching a piece of wood in his hand. Stephen slammed the brakes and got out of the vehicle. He realised another man was lying horizontally on the pavement, being struck about the head repeatedly with the length of wood. Blood was pooling on the path surrounding the injured man. Stephen instinctively yelled out, telling the assailant to stop. The attacker wrapped the wood in a plastic bag and turned to walk away. As he left the scene, he hollered back to the man he had just attacked: “You’ll not fucking do that again”...

Something caught Thomas’ attention at the bottom of a set of stone stairs known to locals as the ABC steps. Twenty-six stone platforms jutted out from the steeply sloping hill towards the canal towpath, a stone for each letter of the alphabet. A young girl was curled up at the bottom of the stairs, her legs folded beneath her as if she were crying. Thomas wondered if she was upset or had fallen, but the reality was far worse...

The ground was too uneven for George to attempt to follow the route to the stream that flowed 30 feet below, so he watched as his dog sniffed the ground behind large rocks. The animal was fixated on a black bin liner, and from George’s perspective, two logs sticking out of it. A faint whimpering sound echoed up from the stream. George strained his eyes and realised that the bundle he assumed was rubbish was actually a boy, who was crying for help...

It was a typical room for a teenage boy in the 1980s; football programmes on his desk with his homework, a well-used Amstrad HI-FI system with a tape cassette and radio, used to record the top chart hits on a Sunday, hitting the pause button before the DJ fades back in. Posters of his favourite musical acts covered the walls; Mel and Kim, T'Pau, Madonna, Samantha Fox — standard fare in 1988. His single bed, pushed against the wall of his cosy room, with his black pyjama bottoms tucked neatly under his pillow to wear the next night, but there would not be a next night…

In February 1974, a two-and-a-half-year-old went missing. For four hours, dozens of police officers and relatives of the toddler searched the area. His older brother had been looking after him while they were out playing but came home not knowing where his sibling was. The youngster was eventually found, peacefully asleep in the long grass a short distance from his home. It was an incredible relief for his worried family. Unfortunately, this happy ending wouldn’t be granted in the case of another boy who went missing around 40 miles away, a day earlier…

Dan Brockley was driving along Woodside Road, close to Woodsome Hall Golf Club in Huddersfield, when a woman stumbled out of the tree line and into the road. It was dark and quiet when the female suddenly appeared, shortly before midnight on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Dan instinctively slammed his foot against the brakes, bringing the car to a screeching halt. The woman scrambled to the passenger side door and pleaded with him to let her in. The television series ‘Midsomer Murders’ has been on-air since 1997. In a fictional rural setting, each episode of the British crime drama sees an individual harbour dark secrets as part of the ongoing whodunnit murder mystery. In a curious twist of life imitating art, the picturesque village of Furneux Pelham in Hertfordshire became an unwitting backdrop for a real-life murder mystery in 2004. An elderly man had been found dead on the front doorstep of his Grade II listed cottage. News outlets dispatched reporters to Furneux Pelham, and the media began to draw parallels between the murder and the fictional television series. As time passed and the crime went unsolved, life in Furneux Pelham slowly returned to normal. However, sometime later, a jailhouse confession would thrust the village back into the spotlight…

A couple living on a farm in Kempsey, Worcestershire, had been having issues with their septic tank for some time. Two maintenance companies had been employed to fix the problem, but frustratingly, it was still blocked. On July 12th, 2019, a third company sent out a worker to drain the septic tank on the 500-acre farm. While emptying the tank, the pipe suddenly became blocked. When the worker cleared the obstruction, he discovered a mass of human hair was causing the problem.
