Today, I will be speaking to Jason Bowdach. Jason is a fellow contributor here on Mixing Light. He is a colorist and online editor with an impressive CV that includes major networks such as Fox and Disney. Jason creates a suite of colorist tools through his company, PixelTools. Jason shares what inspires him to create software offerings for the industry and his approach to a new project. He also has an interesting view on AI / Machine Learning and its likely impact on our industry.

How can I be mesmerized by a television masterpiece while being incredibly stressed out by the chaos of the content? The Bear provokes both of those things. But today, we don’t have to worry about those questions because we focus on the show’s stunning production design and art direction!

In this episode, I chat with Production Designer Merje Veski and Art Director Lisa Korpan about how they got into the world of The Bear, what their roles are, and how they work together to create some of the best television I’ve ever seen.

Merje has a massive credit list, including Chicago Fire, Bobby & Iza, and Man of Steel, to name a few. Lisa’s portfolio includes Justified: City Primeval, Shining Girls, Candyman, and one of my personal favorite shows, Sense8—again, these are only a few.

The Color Timer Season 2 begins right now!

Bram Desmet joins The Color Timer to discuss monitors, philosophy, symbolic logic, LUT boxes, and his family's fallback plan.

Bram is the founder, CEO, and general manager of Flanders Scientific. His nonlinear path to launching a monitor company started with aspirations to become a philosophy professor and then a pilot while working as a bicycle repair technician. However, as he explains, these topics are all interconnected.

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Flanders Scientific has taken the post production industry by storm, creating an excellent sweet spot of price, features, accuracy, customer service, and value. If you’ve been on a film set lately, chances are you’ve seen the FSI Zunzheng stamp of approval at the DIT cart or the video village.

He’s been interviewed many times, but I feel confident this is the first time he’s done it with a 15-minute sand timer running. I also feel confident that it’s one of the first times he’s focused more on discussing philosophy and Christmas decorations than monitors.

I worked with Kali Bateman many years ago in Australia, and I jumped at the opportunity to speak with both her and Emily about the relationship between the Colorist and Color Assistant and their new venture, 'The Colour Suite'. (Yes, that’s how Color is spelled in other parts of the world!)

Kali Bateman is a Senior Colorist for film and television and has been involved with many amazing projects, including Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Jungle Cruise, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Wonder Woman: 1984, and Baz Luhrman’s masterpiece Elvis.

Emily Reid began her career as a camera assistant and freelance cinematographer. She crossed over into post-production as an assistant colorist. Under Kali’s supervision, Emily has grown into the role of Colorist and led numerous grading projects.

Ana Escorse is a senior colorist at Toronto’s Studio Feather. Ana was born and raised in Brazil and was influenced by her exposure to Brazillian Baroque art at a young age. I was drawn toward Nina’s work because of her book, “Color Therapy”. 

After researching further, I discovered that Nina works with Color Energy. This energy, or aura, is considered an unseen field of energy surrounding a person’s physical body. These auras are affected by mood and emotional state.

Nina has a career spanning 40 years; she has studied Spiritual Philosophy, Meditation, various forms of bodywork and energy healing – and much more!

During our 15-minute conversation, we speak about what it was like as a child to understand what she was seeing, her determination to learn more about that, and the lifelong journey this took her on.

Eric Weidt has worked as a Colorist on impressive projects such as Mindhunter and Mank. He spent 15 years in Paris working with fashion photographers and filmmakers (developing look-up tables) and has a BA in theatre arts.

Eric has worked exclusively with director David Fincher since 2015. We delve into his relationship with the famous director and explore his process for his incredible Black & White work in the motion picture ‘Mank’. We even talk about the one film he would watch if he only had one choice (stuck on a desert island with electricity).
