Jake and Bob also discuss how Jesus experienced all seven deadly wounds, challenged each identity lie, and how this in turn helps us challenge our own identity lies so that we too can love through sorrow.

This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Joey Pontarelli, the founder and president of the ministry “Restored”. After finding a lack of help after his parents’ divorce, Joey decided to begin ministry with “Restored” to offer practical guidance and support for teens and young adults from broken families. Jake, Bob, and Joey discuss the wounds that come from divorce, their personal experiences, and practical advice on how to respond to this woundedness.
Key PointsIf there isn’t any transformation in the wounds, then the sins we fall into, as a remedy, make sense. They don’t work, but they make sense.
We often don’t want to face these wounds, so we try to outrun them. But we can’t outrun our wounds. We’re made for more than that.
The Lord understands why you struggle with each particular sin. It doesn’t surprise or scandalize Him. And He loves you where you are.
Divorce is a wound of broken love. So the medicine can only work when you reach the wound. Love is what heals.
Relationship with God is the primary healing element and agent. Give God your attention, quality time, and trust Him.
Consume great content that involves trauma and healing. Seek out coaching - a therapist, spiritual director, or mentor. Have a good community and deep relationships.
For a healthy marriage - spend time with a couple who has a healthy marriage.
The temptation in marriage is to harden your heart and to close yourself off. But instead, we are called to tenderness and vulnerability.

Jake and Bob continue their series on working through hopelessness to find hope. When we feel hopeless, we often avoid God because we feel ashamed, guilty or unloved. In these times we only see God as a judge, pointing out our failings. But God is also our Savior who loves us even in the places we feel unloveable. We can try to find hope through things or people but this will let us down. God is the only one who can provide us with the hope we desire. Our hosts walk us through how to find hope again through an Encounter with the God who loves us.

The season of Advent is a time of hope and waiting: preparing for the birth of Christ and welcoming Him into our hearts in a new way. But a season focused on hope can often reveal the places in our hearts that are hopeless. Jake and Bob kick off a new series on how to move from hopelessness to hope. They discuss how a lack of hope can often stem from a lack of trust, patience and intimacy with the Lord. Listen as they share some helpful shifts in mindset to grow in the virtue of hope this Advent season.
Key Quote“The person who loves intimacy with Jesus will get farther in the healing journey than the person who just wants to be healed.” -Jake Khym
Key PointsHow the holidays and the Advent focus on hope can often reveal where we feel hopeless
We need to desire relationship with Jesus even more than the healing He can give us. He wants to give us good gifts but desires our hearts more than all.
A lack of hope can often come from a lack of intimacy and trust.
Trust is the currency in the economy of relationship.

Forgiveness is not an easy topic. It’s intimately connected to our hurts and areas that need healing. But forgiveness is also misunderstood. Building off the previous series on right judgment, mercy and healing, Jake and Dr. Bob begin a two-part series on forgiveness, diving into the etymology of the word, addressing our misinterpretations, and challenging us to look at how Jesus models forgiveness. They look at how forgiveness is the perfect marriage between right judgment and mercy, and go deep into the Catechism to unpack the spiritual and human reality of this virtue. Be prepared to pause, rewind and listen to this episode again and again.
Key Quote:
It is there, in fact, "in the depths of the heart," that everything is bound and loosed. It is not in our power not to feel or to forget an offense; but the heart that offers itself to the Holy Spirit turns injury into compassion and purifies the memory in transforming the hurt into intercession. - CCC 2843

When we understand and exercise right judgement then we can offer and receive mercy, which leads to healing. Jake and Bob break down the role of mercy with helpful analogies and discussion to draw a more complete picture of healing. They also take a look at what happens when we get judgement wrong.
Key Quote:
Without the presence of the merciful Father, we are delivered up to our faults, without any possible remedy. There would be no forgiveness of error or sin. No place for weakness, frailty, or failure, all of which are nonetheless a part of our lives. - Fr. Jacques Philippe, Priestly Fatherhood

In this extended episode, Jake and Bob sit down with Christopher Dowling for a deeply nuanced conversation examining the the Catechism of the Catholic Church, ‘camps’ that exist around the Church’s teaching on homosexuality, and how we can love one another while fundamentally disagreeing on how to approach same-sex relationships. Christopher came out as gay in 2018 and is currently engaged to be married to another man. He and Bob know one another from their time in shared ministry, and for the first time revisit how the events of 2018 affected them individually. This is a powerful conversation that we hope is one small step towards healing and relationship as we respectfully dialogue about grief and hope, doubt and faith, sadness and love.

Jake and Bob sit down for an honest conversation with Hilde, a woman who would have once called herself a ‘gay Catholic.’ Hilde’s lifelong attraction to the truth made her feel intensely divided between the Catholic faith she was raised with and a lifestyle of same-sex relationships. Then, a spontaneous trip to Medjugorje changed everything. Now, Hilde defines herself more through her identity as a daughter of God than her sexual desires. Hilde’s unflinching retelling of her story is a beautiful example of how God always pursues us.

Jake and Bob begin a series on same-sex attraction with the desire to bring hope, clarity and understanding to this topic and the Church. Why this series? We have seen this topic impact many people who are trying to navigate this conversation well. As we move forward, we want to be sensitive and use great reverence toward the people that this directly affects, including our listeners. We believe that love and charity are essential in this discussion, as well as humility in the pursuit of truth. The depths of the human heart are holy ground.
Key Quote:
The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. Overtime, within the safety of a loving marriage, each man has discovered areas of their hearts that are in need of redemption. Humility before God and our spouses, and a willingness to invite the Lord into our wounds leads to powerful healing and wholeness.

This week, Jake and Bob spend time with an old friend, Christopher West. They reminisce about their spiritual history with each other, and Christopher gets real about his own journey of healing from rejection wounds. Christopher is well known as ‘the Theology of the Body guy,’ but after nine years of hiding his own brokenness behind masks in his marriage, he was confronted with the reality that he was living out his brokenness with his wife. Christopher walks us through his testimony of learning to take off the masks to let God love him.

Show Notes
It’s a joy to welcome our dear friend and special guest, Sr. Miriam James Heidland, onto the podcast. Continuing the series on Sexual Healing, Sr. Miriam teaches us how to have a disposition of tenderness and reverence toward our own stories, what she calls holy ground. Jake, Bob and Sr. Miriam regularly work alongside each other leading healing events, so this conversation is familiar territory. We are grateful for her vulnerability. Content warning: sexual abuse and the impacts of childhood abuse are discussed within this episode.

We all bring brokenness into marriage and by God’s grace, we also get to participate in our spouse's healing journey. In part three of the Healing in Marriage series based on Dr. Bob’s book, “Be Devoted,” Jake and Bob discuss how to restore trust in broken areas of a marriage. They give practicals on how to navigate this often difficult journey, and show us how reconciliation is possible for anyone who is willing.
This week kicks off a new series on “Healing in Marriage.” If you’re struggling in marriage, you are not alone. How can you find healing in difficult situations with your spouse? This episode addresses the presence of conflict in marriage, and how to honor your spouse. Jake and Dr. Bob draw on stories from their marriages as well as experience from their practice in professional counseling to shed light on this reality in relationships.
Sexual intimacy is the final area covered in this series on unity in marriage, since this form of unity flows from all the others (Spiritual, Emotional, Companionship, Teamwork). In the episode, Jake and Dr. Bob share how sexual desire and self-gift are made to become integrated in marriage through the Holy Spirit, making a way for healing and deep intimacy.
Part four of the series on Unity in Marriage explores the joy of companionship and teamwork. Jake and Dr. Bob flesh out what it means to become one of mind and heart, and share personal examples of how they’ve had to tackle self-focus in order to move toward deeper connection through selflessness in their marriages. They also address the question, “How do we honor one another’s strengths and complement in a way that builds teamwork instead of moving in opposite directions?”
Jake & Dr. Bob discuss emotional intimacy in this next episode in their series on unity in marriage. Generally, this type of intimacy is more difficult for men, while it's one of the deepest desires of women. Our hosts share stories of how they have grown in emotional intimacy through their own marriages, and provide practical tips on how to develop deeper emotional intimacy in your own relationship.
This week kicks off a new series on finding unity in marriage. Jake and Bob will share what they’ve learned through their own marriages and their professional work with married couples. In this episode, they discuss how marriage is a union of two broken people, but by inviting in the love of God, growing together in unity is made possible. A couple can grow and heal together during the journey of their marriage. Our hosts set the stage for a great series and share tips that will help a marriage become stronger.
Jake and Bob continue their series on the Healing of the Family and dive into marriage/family wounds. The family is the primary way children learn how to give and receive love, treat other people, & find their identity. As adults, we can look back at our upbringing and see how we were formed in healthy ways and ways that caused us to struggle. Jake and Bob offer suggestions on how to find healing from our family/marriage trauma and how our families can create a loving culture where our children can thrive.
Dr. Bob and Jake discuss the power of a father’s love and his capacity to wound. Fathers plant deep seeds in their children’s hearts with what they said or didn’t say and what they did or didn’t do. The restoration of wounds from our fathers is life-changing.
After recapping how Peter’s pride, shame, and false self have been stripped away, Dr. Bob and Jake discuss the amazing transformation in Peter after his healing encounter with Jesus and being filled with the Holy Spirit. The series concludes with reflections on how each of us can find ourselves in Peter’s story and experience a similar transformation.
After explaining the meaning and power of shame, Dr. Bob and Jake reflect on the restorative encounter between Jesus and Peter on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. We can all resonate with Peter’s experience of denying Jesus and the resulting shame. Our hearts long to be healed and restored. Jesus comes to Peter, not to further shame him, but to heal him.
This week’s episode goes deeper into the life of St. Peter. Through personal stories and experiences, Bob and Jake help us appreciate the value of seeing ourselves as we truly are because in vulnerability, as we carry the cross, our hearts move deeper through the journey of healing. How we respond at these times brings us along the path of either Peter (hope) or Judas (despair).
Bob and Jake continue the series on healing as seen through the life of St. Peter. Identity is the core of who we are and something that God wants to assure and clarify in us. Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter signifying a deepening of his identity. God sees truly and clearly. He sees who we are meant to be. Our search for identity and validation is most perfectly rooted in our relationship with Him.
Bob and Jake continue the series on healing as seen through the life of St. Peter. In the healing process, we can be focused on a dynamic that is important but not as deep or far reaching as what Jesus is addressing. Trusting Jesus and interpreting our journey in trust and goodness is best because we move beyond control.
Bob and Jake start a new series on how the life of St. Peter reveals important lessons for the healing journey. In Part 1, the impact of shame and the value of keeping our eyes on Jesus are discussed.
Bob and Jake finish the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss vows which are inner resolutions that we make in response to wounds and beliefs. We make these resolutions in an attempt to avoid the original pain we experienced in a wound. Vows can significantly affect the way we do life and can go unnoticed since we often perceive them as normal and necessary.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss judgements which are a type of belief that distort our perceptions of others and become a barrier to love.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss beliefs. Our lives are filled with experiences and we interpret these experiences and put meaning to them. We then agree with the beliefs that are either truths or lies.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss Type A and Type B wounds as well as seven categories of woundedness called the seven deadly wounds.
Bob and Jake start a new series about the components of a wound. Wounds, beliefs, and vows are critical aspects that, when noticed and addressed, lead to healing and freedom.
Bob and Jake conclude the series on faith or fear by explaining how our fears form a false self. Jesus invites us to deny our false self, come to Him, learn from Him, and look into His eyes of mercy.
Bob and Jake continue the series on faith or fear and discuss seven deadly wounds and their impact on our lives. We have dynamics in our hearts that are below the surface and, although they are unseen, impact our peace, love, and joy.
Bob and Jake start a new series about faith and fear. Understanding our heart’s reaction to life and why we become afraid leads us to name our fear before God and invite Him to love us, heal us, and set us free.
Bob and Jake finish their series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on God’s design for humans to be unashamed. We were designed to bear God’s image, see as He sees, and love as He loves. Our healing journey requires us to bring the depths of our shame into the light and love of God so we can live our lives to the full.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on the idea of “original unity” and how the relationship between men and women was intended, how it’s wounded, and how it’s restored.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on how females uniquely reveal God's glory, how they are wounded, and how they are healed.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on how males uniquely reveal God's glory, how they are wounded, and how they are healed.
Bob and Jake continue the series on the Theology of the Body and healing by talking about how our identity is found in God. God gives us our identity but it’s possible we have a skewed image of God that affects our identity and peace. It’s important that we are aware of where we are bringing the deep questions of our hearts because if we lose God’s identity, we lose our identity.
Bob and Jake start a series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) by sharing stories of how the TOB has brought healing into people’s lives. They discuss various aspects that are essential to the healing process and ground TOB as an essential background for healing.
Bob and Jake discuss how their (and our) life story is the critical backdrop to our healing journey.
Bob and Jake share some stories about their personal restoration and how important honest and openness are in the healing journey.
