Network Special is a podcast about the lost art of appointment television. Utilizing the power of VHS recordings and DVD cash-ins, hosts Colin Patrick and Nathan Scherer discuss television specials that were mostly meant to be aired once. Tune in to relive your childhood (or the childhood of your parents) and see what TV executives thought would be great television for the whole family.
The podcast Network Special is created by Golden Ox Network. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
On a bittersweet episode of Network Special, Zachariah the OG returns to send us off in style! That's right, this is the last and final episode of Network Special ever! We watch two very strange Warren Beatty specials that aired on TCM (reluctantly I assume) which he created all to retain the rights to Dick Tracy in a move that will not pan out the way he hopes. Tune in to hear us laugh and laugh and laugh one last time! Oh, and there might even be one more special guest but you'll have to listen all the way to the end to find out. No cheating and fast-forwarding!!

This week we're going deep in the tunnels under a daycare to talk about a true-life story that will make you angrier than a wet hen! This HBO movie takes you deep into the Satanic Panic of the 80s; focusing on the McMartin Preschool and the allegations of child abuse that turned out to be one big crock of YOU KNOW WHAT. Also, tune in to hear all about Nathan's past as he remembers what it was like to be caught up in the fever!

This week we tackle another pilot gone wrong and this time it went REALLY wrong. The Jerk, Too is an alternate universe for - you guessed it - the Steve Martin classic The Jerk. Sadly, there is no Steve Martin here but we get all kinds of nods to the original (just not any of the funny ones). Thankfully, a Randy Newman-alike gives us a classic banger of a theme song so all is not lost.

Hello everyone! It's Nathan - I write these show descriptions and I want to take a minute to talk to you while Zachariah is in the other room. He doesn't seem to think that Saved by the Bell is all that great. He was too good for it when he was a kid and turned up his nose whenever it would come on (probably while sipping his cold Campbell's tomato soup that he called "gazpacho"). Sadly, I think this might be the last time we talk about the Bell on our show so I just wanted to take this time out to say what I really think about my co-host. He's a total NUT! This week we invite you to get high on us as we watch the famed Robert Evans court-ordered PSA special that aired on NBC in 1981. With a smashing theme song sung by stars from the 70s and 80s, this anti-drug message worked so well that drugs have been virtually eradicated from America!

We talk about how we finally have a show that is fun to watch and how somedays when you're recording these episodes about bad television and how much of a drag it can be and how sometimes you really just question the point of it all and how what happened in your life that led to this and if all of this is even worth the trouble... Anyway! Tune in!

This week on a very lonely and piss-ridden episode of the Special, Nathan and Zachariah talk about Michael Landon's The Loneliest Runner and semi-autobiographical tale of when he wet the bed and it led to him becoming a gold medalist in the Olympics. Also, Nathan talks about how he used to wet the bed and all the gold medals he won (for pissing the bed) as a result.

This week on Network Special, the dawgs take you to Hollywood, the land of movie stars, rock musicians, and talking animated dogs! Hank Azaria plays the titular character in this failed pilot aired as a TV special on Fox. We try to explain the plot to you but fail miserably as there's not enough happening to constitute much of a story (or a reason why this exists). Tune in to find out what was so special about Azaria's voice acting that eventually led to him being cast on The Simpsons!

Live from Remulak, it's Network Special! This week on the show Nathan and Zachariah take you deep into the Rankin/Bass vaults to bring you a very special animated version of the famous Dan Aykroyd/Jane Curtin/Laraine Newman sketch from Saturday Night Live. This was a failed pilot that aired as a TV special on NBC. Fortunately, the network was kind enough not to pick it up and helped the writing team of Tom Davis and Al Franken to avoid the embarrassment of having to write more of these miserable scripts. Tune in for mass quantities of laughter!

This week on Network Special we go deep into the Branch Davidian compound of David Koresh in Waco, TX. This movie was made in 1993 WHILE the standoff was happening which gives it a very one-sided take (mostly from the cops' point of view). We go deep into the event and all the hysteria surrounding the madness.

It's the 20th episode of Network Special and we are celebrating by going back to our roots! This week we are taking a ride down south to Hazard County to check out a new dance club owned and operated by 80s heartthrob Scott Baio. In 1983, CBS was excited to announce it's all new cartoon block dedicated to video games and Baio was all too happy to tell kids all about it. Also, we get a look at a reused Kroft puppet and some hijinx courtesy of Boss Hog and Rosco P. Coletrane!

This week Nathan and Zachariah die and become dogs on a very meaty episode of Network Special. We watch Poochinski - a failed pilot that was aired in 1990 on NBC much to the delight of no one who saw it. Peter Boyle stars as a cop who is killed in action and then looks at a dog while he's dying and then becomes him. Yep - that's about as much story as you're going to get in this episode.

This week Zachariah takes over as our tour guide to China and he's brought along a celebrity friend whose name rhymes with Cobb Dope. We get a peek behind the Great Wall for the first time and Bob Hope is there to make the people of China laugh and laugh and laugh (or sit quietly in confusion). Bob has also brought along some other super 70s celebrity friends but sadly that doesn't make this three-hour tour feel any less like a years-long shipwreck.

This week on Network Special, Nathan and the Zack Attack find out the REAL (fake) story of how five everyday regular (smokin' hot) kids became some of the biggest celebrities in America. Based on a book written by Dustin Diamond and ghostwritten by someone worse, we get a behind-the-scenes look at how much a douche Dustin was to his castmates and friends. We also get a little bit of a peek behind the Network Special curtain to find out just how deep Nathan's love for SbtB goes.

This week, on a very "out of this world" episode of Network Special, Nathan & Zachariah take a look at a FOX documentary special centered around what is claimed to be actual footage of an alien autopsy filmed at Roswell, NM. We talk about our experiences with UFOs (we have none) and whether or not we believe the footage we are seeing. Tune in to find out if this week's episode is Funny or Not!

Introduced by the "Just Say No!" queen herself, this cartoon featured a smattering of Saturday morning cartoon heroes and a couple of plucky kids who brave the perils of time machines and evil carnivals to shake off the bad habits of smoke monsters. Also, N & Z talk about their favorite PSAs.

This week Nathan and Zachariah put on their dancing shoes and singing lips to discuss a pilot that CBS scrapped. Luckily for us, they paid a crap-ton of money to produce it so they aired it as a TV special giving the Network Special fellas permission to discuss it on their show! Tune in to hear all about this musical experiment featuring some pretty big names in the biz and also some of the worst music this side of Broadway.

The shriveled boys of Network Special are back in California and this time they’re bringing along a couple of friends from advertising. The California Raisins were created by an ad agency to sell - you guessed it - raisins. The Raisins were so popular that they spawned a couple of television specials, a soundtrack, and a bunch of merchandise. Zachariah and Nathan dive deep into the vine to find out what makes these grapes so special.
