Ridley Scott’s epic historical sequel, Gladiator II promises to be a dramatic and spectacular, if not particularly historically accurate roller-coaster ride through the Roman Empire. And while there are already some excellent videos out there discussing the authenticity of the battle scenes, dramatic deaths and exactly which era saw the flooding of the Colosseum, I want to take a look at something different – the cast of characters and their real historic counterparts. Today let’s explore the family trees which connect the key players, sort out who was real and who was fictional, meet a few fascinating women who did more than wait around to be rescued, and discover everyone’s true fates, which are even more dramatic than Hollywood could come up with. Caution, there will be some spoilers, but I won’t give away the ending of the new film, only what really happened in history.
Gladiator I :
Marcus Aurelius
Commodus
The Year of Five Emperors - 193
Pertinax
Didius Julianus
Pescennius Niger
Clodius Albinus
Septimius Severus
Gladiator II:
Caracalla and Geta
Macrinus

The deliciously witty drama series ‘The Great’ tells the occasionally true story of Catherine II, Empress of Russia. It’s a wonderful example of why historic dramas should be taken as entertainment, not a history lesson. While playing fast and loose with history it actually sanitizes a lot of the scandal in her life by transforming Peter into a romantic antihero and making Catherine fall in love with him. In reality Catherine didn’t keep Peter around for a ‘will they, won’t they’ Hollywood romance. Her lover promptly strangled him in prison. Catherine the Great knew how to use her charm and sexuality, the only tools available to a woman of her time, both for her own advancement and her own pleasure. And while I love the great, it so far only captures a fraction of her true greatness. So let’s take a peek inside the imperial boudoir and get to know the Empress, her twisted relationship with Peter and her many lovers a little more intimately. And we’ll address that horrid rumor about the horse.

The public loves a good story about the salacious private lives of the rich and famous. And royals often really did get up to some jaw-dropping behaviors. But sometimes a grain of rumor can be so enthralling that it snowballs into an unshakable myth. If you ask the average person what they know about Catherine the Great they are likely to say “Isn’t she the one who was crushed under a horse?” Many are still convinced that Queen Elizabeth I was really a man. And Marie Antionette will forever be linked with the misquote “Let them eat cake!” Today let’s explore 10 commonly believed myths about historic royals, examine how the rumors got started and separate what is gospel from what is just gossip.

The ability to decide when or if we have children has been an essential human struggle for all of recorded history. Some may believe that abortion is a modern phenomenon. But people have been finding ways to end unwanted pregnancies for thousands of years. And ancient people were often more accepting of it than we are today. From an herb in ancient Greece that was so popular it went extinct, to medieval Popes who argued for women’s rights. From a plan B recipe published by an American founding father, to the horrifying measures desperate women without access to legal care have resorted to. Today we will explore the history of abortion. What’s more, we’ll take a wider view on times throughout history when governments attempted to control their people through reproductions, including in Nazi Germany, Communist Romania and China, and in the United States. Fair warning: this episode will deal with many difficult and dark chapters in history. Please do not take any of this information as medical advice.

Queens of the World Series: Irene of Athens ruled as regent for her son, Easter Roman Emperor, Constantine VI. But when he rose up against her and threatened her religious conviction, she had his eyes gouged out. Thus she became the first Roman Empress to rule in her own right. But because the Pope did not believe a woman could hold the title, he awarded it to Charlemagne, thus creating two rival Roman empires, one in the east and the other in the West.

Episode originally aired in 2019, I have added a 2024 update.
Of the 66 monarchs who have ruled over England since the Norman conquest only 8 have been Queens. These women have had to fight to gain and hold power. Through most of English history men outranked women in the line of succession so the only way for a woman to inherit the throne was if she had no living brothers. The wives of Kings, while called Queens are not monarchs in their own right and are referred to as Queen Consorts. Some of these female monarchs who were fortunate enough to occupy the throne were less than brilliant rulers. But some reigned with wisdom and justice proving a woman could do the job just as well as a man. Here are their stories...
Matilda (1141-1148)
Jane (1553)
Mary I (1553-1558)
Elizabeth II (1558-1603)
Mary II (1689-1694)
Anne (1702-1714)
Victoria (1837-1901)
Elizabeth II (1952-2022)

Anyone who has spent time around a newborn baby knows that while adorable, they are mostly preoccupied with milk, sleep and soiling themselves and don’t exactly have the skills to govern a nation. Though some my argue that a baby might make a better head of state than a politician. Throughout history, the combination of hereditary monarchy and brutally short life expectancy meant that many rulers did inherited their thrones when they were mere infants. Some were even unfortunate enough to loose their fathers while still in the womb and be born directly onto the throne. In one case a crown was even placed on the belly of the pregnant queen and in another a 3 month old king wailed through his tedious coronation ceremony. Today we’ll meet 6 rulers who became monarchs before they even took their first breath:
King Alexander IV of Macedonia
Shah Shapur II of Iran
King Jean I of France & Navarre
Ladislaus the Posthumous
William III, Prince of Orange
King Alfonso XIII of Spain

You can’t be a King without the bling, and you can’t be a Queen without the sheen. Royal women have long donning glittering headgear to make them stand out from the crowd. Tiaras are works of art and are fitted with pricey diamonds, pearls and other precious stones. As these heirlooms are often passed down female family lines it is fascinating to see how they bounced across Europe with royal brides. Today, let's gawk at 7 of the most impressive and historic European royal Tiaras.
Empress Josephine’s Cameo Tiara
Norwegian Emerald Parure Tiara
Stuart Tiara
Fleur-de-Lys “La Buena” Tiara

Agrippina was the great granddaughter of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus; the grand niece of the second Emperor, Tiberius, the sister of the third, Caligula, wife of the fourth, Claudius and mother of the fifth, Nero. After several personal tragedies, Agrippina became ruthless in her pursuit of security and power. As a woman, she couldn’t rule herself, so she manipulated and murdered her way into the Emperors bed; then secured her own son’s place on the throne. Only to have him turn on her and order her elaborate assassination.

From a Spartan Princess who became the first female Olympic champion at a race she wasn’t allowed to watch; to games designed for Emperor Nero to win. And from a Gold-winning Greek sailor to silver-clenching British equestrians, and a bronze decorated handball player who won the heart of a princess. Charlotte of Belgium was the beautiful and bright only daughter of the first King of Belgium. Her life looked to be joyous too, when she fell in love with a Hapsburg Archduke, Maximilian of Austria. The couple’s numerous royal connections even got them a incredible job opportunity, to become the rulers of the newly established Empire of Mexico. They crossed the Atlantic full of tropical, turquoise dreams of being hailed as heroes. But they quickly discovered that they were philosophically opposed to the small percentage of Mexicans who actually wanted them there. As the Empire crumbled, Carlota made a desperate return to Europe to beg for help. Only to be met with cold rejection, which ensured Maximilian’s demise and drove Carlota to the depths of mental illness. Let’s get to know Empress Carlota of Mexico and The Tragically Short Hapsburg Mexican Empire. Plus the History behind Cinco de Mayo.

If you google “Princess Charlotte of Wales” you will be greeted by pictures of William and Catherine’s adorable daughter, born in 2015. But there was another Princess Charlotte of Wales, born over 200 years earlier who had a much different life. She endured the neglect of parents who hated each other and the abuse of a father who saw her as competition. She grew up resilient and brash. After dragging several young men along, she escaped into a happy love match with a dashing German Prince. They were every bit as popular as the currant Prince and Princess of Wales. As the inevitable heir to the throne, Charlotte embodied Britain’s hope for the future and the birth of her first child was feverishly anticipated. But horribly managed medical care caused her to died in childbirth at the age of 21. Her tragic death was mourned by the nation just as deeply as Princess Diana’s. The race to sire a new heir produced the future Queen Victoria. So every British royal since, including the young Princess Charlotte would not have existed were it not for the sorry fate of the original Princess Charlotte of Wales. Let’s meet her.

Queen Charlotte went from minor German country gentry to Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. Charlotte stayed out of politics as her husband lost the American revolution, and she lost her dear friend, Marie Antoinette in the French revolution. Charlotte made numerous cultural contributions including introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and throwing the first debutante ball. In her later years she had to watch as her husband slipped into mental illness and her children struggled to produce a new generation of royals.

Catherine Parr is remembered as Henry VIII’s 6th and final wife, the one who survived the murderous monarch. But while earlier wives, who ended their Queenship more tragically are glamorized, Catherine is often hidden in the background. The new film Firebrand tells the harrowing tale of an argument with the King, which nearly landed Catherine on the block and a 7th wife in Henry’s bed. And the musical 6 celebrates Parr as an early feminist and laments her being forced to choose Henry over the real love of her life, Thomas Seymour. But it leaves out Catherine’s dramatic life before becoming Queen and the fact that Seymour turned out to be an absolute scoundrel! Let’s examine the whole life of wife #6, Catherine Parr. We’ll learn what became of her, the baby she died for, and how her grave was desecrated centuries after her tragic death.

In Ancient Greece and the Roman empire homosexual relationships were an accepted and common practice. In this hyper-masculine society the male form was revered for its physical perfection while women’s virtue was jealously guarded to ensure the legitimacy of children. In Greece romantic and sometimes sexual relationships between older and younger men was seen as an initiation rite. The Romans modeled themselves after Greece in most things but had strong feelings that a roman citizen should always play the dominant, never submissive role in a homosexual relationship. Prominent citizens sought out enslaved men, prostitutes, and entertainers to fulfill their sexual desires. Enslaved boys would sometimes be castrated in an attempt to keep them docile and immature for the pleasure of their dominant male lover. Though uncommon, marriages between men were not unheard of in ancient Rome. They included many of the traditional elements of a wedding including a dowry and the man acting as the bride would wear a veil. Here are the stories of 8 Emperors of Rome whose preference for the masculine form was particularly renown.
Julius Caesar (100 - 44 BC)
Tiberius (42 BC - 37 AD)
Nero (37 - 68 AD)
Galba (3BC-69AD)
Domitian (51-96 AD)
Hadrian (76 – 138 AD)
Elagabalus (204 - 222 AD)
Constans (323 - 350 AD)

Henry VIII’s is infamous for his relationships with women. The domineering King took 6 wives during his 36 years on the throne. And he disposed of them with as much scandal as he wooed them – Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. But three other women had an important impact on his childhood, his mother Elizabeth of York and his two Grandmothers Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort. They have been dubbed by popular historical fiction author Philippa Gregory as the White Princess, the White Queen and the Red Queen. These women were caught in the brambles of the wars of the roses and fought tooth and nail for their children and for themselves. And it was these three women who brought an end to three decades of bloody battle and restored peace to England. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History!

It probably hasn’t been made into one before because, until recently, Hollywood wasn’t too keen on portraying homosexual characters and relationships, authentically. However, the new Starz series, Mary and George promises to finally introduce the wider world to the dashing country commoner who won the heart of a king and was raised so high he had no where to go but plummeting back to earth. The series emphasises George’s relationship with his ambitions mother, Mary who encouraged and facilitated his royal seduction. So let’s travel back to the Stuart court of England and meet the real Mary and George Villiers. Get out your cups and saucers, because I will be spilling a lot of tea with this one.

Throughout history, across cultures and in every walk of life, there have always been people whose identity went beyond the two-gender mold. And those who do not fit the gender assigned to them at birth. Though people in the past did not often have the concepts, terminology or relative freedom we have today, there are many notable historic figures whom historians speculate were likely transgender or non-binary. Fans of the hit show Outlander or of Scottish history in general have likely heard of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Battle of Culloden and the Jacobite succession. Today we assume that all the daughters of a monarch are called Princesses. But in the middle ages this wasn’t the case. The title Princess was not officially used in England for the daughter of the monarch until 1643. Since then there have been 7 women who have held the title of Princess Royal; Mary, Anne, Charlotte, Victoria, Louise, Mary and Anne. Let’s meet them and see how the lives and roles of a Princess Royal have evolved over 400 years.
Princess Mary, Princess of Orange (1631-1660)
Princess Anne, Princess of Orange (1709-1759)
Princess Charlotte, Queen consort of Württemberg (1766–1828)
Princess Victoria, German Empress and Queen consort of Prussia (1840–1901)
Princess Louise, Duchess of Fife (1867–1931)
Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood (1897–1965)
Princess Anne (1950)

Queen Victoria’s eldest son and heir was a man of great appetites. He loved food, he loved drink and he loved women. Dirty Bertie’s licentiousness flew in the face of his mother’s regime of uptight morality. The jolly Prince of wales was so popular with the ladies that he became known as Edward the Caresser. He had more than 55 mistresses, some noble society ladies, some glamorous actresses, some Persian sex workers and even a sharp-tongued chef. Here are the stories of just a handful of the many colorful mistresses of King Edward VII:
Nellie Clifden
Hortense Schneider
Catherine Walters
Lady Susan Vane-Tempest
Jennie Jerome Spencer-Churchill
Lady Harriet Mordaunt
Patsy Cornwallis-West
Parisian Sex Workers
Lillie Langtry
Sarah Bernhardt
Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick
Agustina del Carmen Otero
Alice Keppel

But that certainly wasn’t for lack of proposals. Elizabeth had at least 16 suitors in her lifetime. In her youth men were eager to take advantage of her and their ambitions landed Elizabeth in the tower of London. But when she was Queen, Elizabeth turned the table on the many men eager to win her hand. She played them against each other and dangled herself as a prize they could never quite win. Over this 2 part series we’ll meet the English Lords and European royals who pursued her majesty, and the one man she truly loved through it all. And examine that age old question, was the virgin Queen really a virgin?

Popular historic dramas like Bridgerton, Hamilton and Sanditon sometimes receive criticism that their diverse casts are historically inaccurate. But in fact there have been people of color in Britain and France since Roman times. By the 18th century the trans Atlantic slave trade brought more people of African decent to Europe then ever before. In 1768 there were about 15,000 black people living in London. Many were brought their as enslaved servants and sailors. But some had the right mixture of talent and luck to rise to the upper echelons of society, becoming celebrities and even aristocrats. Today we’ll met 7 prominent people of African and mixed heritage who lived in Britain or France in the 18th Century. Among them a King’s secret daughter, an icon of both Sport and music, two authors who spoke out against slavery, and a lady of wealth and refinement who would have fit perfectly into the world of Bridgerton. Here are their stories...
Louise Marie-Thérèse
Ignatius Sancho
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges
Olaudah Equiano
Dido Elizabeth Belle
Jean Amilcar
Thomas-Alexandre Dumas

In many countries where polygamy is practiced, Kings and emperors have had harems of hundred or even thousands of wives and concubines. It’s good to be the King. But in Europe, Christianity has reigned for a millennia and the church is pretty sticked on their one woman at a time policy. But that didn’t stop a handful of monarchs from taking multiple trips down the aisle. Royal brides were under a lot of pressure to produce as many heirs as possible, and they died often in childbirth or because their bodies were warn out from constant pregnancy. If a monarch wasn’t getting the heirs he wanted from his wife, or if he had grown tired of her and she hadn’t done him the courtesy of dying, there was always divorce or even murder to clear the throne for another consort to take her place. Many rulers managed to marry 3 times, but today we’ll be counting down 6 serial monogamist monarchs who had 4 or marriages.
Philip II, King of Spain, 1527 – 1598, 4 wives
William the Silent, Prince of Orange & Ruler of The Netherlands, 1533 – 1584, 4 wives
Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, 1784 – 1833, 4 wives
Władysław II Jagiełło, King of Poland & Grand Duke of Lithuania 4 wives
Henry VIII, King of England, 1491 – 1547, 6 wives
Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia, 1530 – 1584, 6-8 wives
Honorable Mentions:
Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor, 4 wives, 5 Concubines
Casimir III the Great, King of Poland, 4 wives
Catherine Parr, Queen of England, 4 Husbands

In addition to being the Queen of the United Kingdom and the vast British Empire, Victoria might also be lauded as the Queen of Christmas. She and her beloved husband Prince Albert popularized many of the quintessential holiday traditions that we still enjoy today including the Christmas tree, Christmas cards and Christmas Crackers. Their 9 children enjoyed trees decorated with delectable dainties like sugar plums, candy canes and gingerbread. And many new delicious dishes were added to the traditional medieval fare on the royal holiday dining table including roast Turkey, chestnuts and plum pudding. Let’s take a look at the history of how these holiday foods made it on to her majesty’s table and enjoy a fabulously festive feast, fit for a Queen.

Private family footage from 1933 was leaked to the press which shows a 6 year old future Queen Elizabeth II, with her mother, younger sister and uncle laughing and giving Nazi salutes to the camera. A rebellious 20 year old Prince Harry got in hot water for wearing a Nazi uniform to a party he attended with his brother. The British royals would very much like to forget their many family connections to Germany in the early 20th century and to Adolph Hitler himself. But the fact remains that the connections are numerous and fascinating. Let’s take a look at the British royal who started WWI resulting in the rise of Nazism, the many British and German royals who supported Hitler in the hopes of regaining their lost thrones, and a few who stood up to the Fuhrer, even to the point of being sent to concentration camps or murdered by the Gestapo.

In the late 1800s, American industrialists were raking in cash and living like princes, but they had no way, other than their mansions, servants and yachts, of making it clear that they were better than everyone else. Meanwhile, across the pond, the British aristocracy had come on hard times. They still had their titles, historic estates and aire of superiority, but they were running low on funds. This became a match made somewhere south of heaven when hundreds of American heiresses married cash-strapped British noblemen. Millions of dowry dollars crossed the pond to renovate ancient English mansions and bolster the ailing peerage, while American fathers got to brag that they had a baroness or a duchess in the family. There was even a magazine, “The Titled American” in which British nobles with a title to sell could advertise their eligibility to rich American ladies. But marriages based on exchanging cash for coronets weren’t always destined to be happy. Let’s get to know five of the American women who became Dollar Princesses...

Happy almost Halloween, Everyone! For those of you who have been following my channel since the early days, you might recall that I started off doing much spookier content. I love Halloween and horror, though I tend to veer more spooking and supernatural than gory. Back in 2018 I did a series exploring the evolution of 8 different horror tropes, from their ancient origins, to their modern pop culture afterlives. Last week I dug up up this the history of Vampires, The Devil, Zombies and Killers. Today I'll conjure up Witches, Ghosts, Werewolves and Horror Comedy.

The Tudors ruled over England from the unlikely battlefield victory of King Henry VII in 1485; through the 6 wives of heinous Henry VIII and his three children’s desperate fights over the throne; to the agonizing death of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. The family’s tragic interpersonal drama, and penchant for beheading anyone who got in their way have inspired a number of chilling ghost stories. So lock the door, turn down the lights, light a candle and pour yourself a bloody Mary. Together, lets step briefly off the relatively firm ground of historic record and into the misty realms of legend, hearsay and the supernatural as we recount the Ghastly Ghost Stories of the Terrible Tudors...

The Grimaldi family has ruled over the tiny but beautiful and wealthy nation of Monaco since 1297. And for just as long they have been shockingly unlucky in love. Since the dynasty was supposedly cursed by a witch in the 14th century they have endured far more than their fair share of terrible mismatches, mistresses, an affair with King Louis XIV, abandonment, divorce, estrangement and tragic death. From Rainier I to Grace Kelly, Princess Caroline, Princess Stéphanie, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, we explore the unfortunate love lives of the Monegasque royal family.

From Wondery comes the latest from Even the Rich co-hosts Brooke Siffrinn and Aricia Skidmore-Williams, Even the Royals. They’ll take you inside the cloistered world of royal families, past and present, where wealth and status often come at the expense of your freedom – and maybe even your life.

From Medieval monarchs who were rushed to their graves, and occasionally exploded, to The Tudors and Stuarts whose people lined up to see life-like wax effigies of their recently deceased monarchs. Male-preference primogeniture and salic law have meant that most European monarchs have been men. Queen regnants are exceedingly rare in history. But for 90 years from 1890 to 1980 The Netherlands was reigned over by three successive Queens. Wilhelmina inherited the throne after the early deaths of all three of her brothers, Juliana because she was an only child and Beatrix because she was the eldest of 4 sisters. These Queens were heroes of the first and second world wars, the first female billionaires, courted controversy with their choices of husbands and friends and won the admiration of their people with their down-to-earth style. Let’s meet the three Queens of the Netherlands. Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana & Queen Beatrix.

Queen Guinevere, Morgan le Fey and Nimue, the mystical lady of the lake have been cast as heroins, virtuous women and wicked femme fatals by the many people who have retold the legend of King Arthur over 1500 years. I'll sketch the highlights of the story, galloping past the oft retold battles and quests of the knights of the round table and focusing on the many parts women had to play. Then take a look at the way the legend morphed through the passage of time and some of the reverberation the inhabitants of the Camelot have had on real history.

If you think the kids in your family are a lot to handle, imagine having over a dozen of them! That was the reality for the royal women in today’s video. The primary expectation of Queens and other well born women of the past was to have as many children as possible to secure their husband’s dynasty and bare a few spares to be used in advantageous political marriages. Their fertility was their life. They were married early and caught on a treadmill of pregnancy, birth, handing their babies over to be raised by wet-nurses and tutors, and hoping back into bed to conceive again as soon as possible. Surely they looked forward to the relief of menopause. Here are 9 Queens and Empresses who bore an extraordinary number of children:
Mumtaz Mahal, Mughal Empress Consort - 14 Children
Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Consort of Great Britain & Ireland - 15 Children
Anna Jagellonica, Queen Consort of Germany, Bohemia & Hungary - 15 Children
Eleanor of Castile, Queen Consort of England - 16 Children
Keran, Queen Consort of Armenia - 16 Children
Maria Theresa, Holy Roman Empress - 16 Children
Maria Carolina of Austria, Queen Consort of Naples and Sicily - 17 Children
Anne, Queen of Great Britain - 18 Children
Darejan Dadiani, Queen Consort of Georgia - 23 Children

What 16th century megalomaniac monarch magnified the power of his nation, ordered the violent executions of thousands of his own people, became obsessed with fathering male heirs and went through at least 6 wives, several of whom were murdered? Why Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia of course! In fact he outdid Henry VIII of England in many terrible ways, including having not 6 wives but as many as 8. The exact number is still debated by historians. But 6 or 8, they would all come to regret their wedding vows. Let’s meet the women who were unfortunate enough to call one of the most evil men in history their husband.

Olga was the wive of Igor, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus’, a federation of people whose capital was the city of Kyiv, now the capital of modern day Ukraine. When her husband was brutally murdered by a subsidiary tribe, Olga went on a legendary campaign of cunning and ruthless revenge. Once in control of her husband’s kingdom, she was an efficient and effective leader. She converted to Christianity in order to get out of an unwanted marriage proposal. She is credited with introducing Christianity to the Rus people. After her death, Olga was canonized as a saint and is regarded as “Equal to the Apostles” within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
Jadwiga, Female King of Poland was crowned at the age of 10. She grew wise beyond her years and was forced to make a difficult decision about who to marry – a young man she liked or an old man who would Christianize his country for her. Though she reigned for only 15 years she did a great deal of good and is considered one of the greatest monarchs in Polish history.

Happy Pride! 🏳️🌈 Through most of history homosexuality and gender non-conformity were met with misunderstanding and intolerance. And while men in power had some modicum of freedom to pursue their own desires, women’s sexuality and identity was much more tightly controlled. Lesbian relationships were conducted in secret or explained as “intense friendships”. And women who didn’t conform to traditional gender politics were puzzled over and vilified. Here are the stories of 8 royal and noble women from history whose sexuality and/or identity went against the grain:
Crown Princess Sun-bin Bong of Joseon
Duchess Margaret of Parma
Queen Christina of Sweden
Duchess Hortense Mancini
Queen Anne of Great Britain
Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma
Duchess Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo
Princess Abigail Kawānanakoa of Hawaii

The royal and imperial courts of Asia had complex systems of female hierarchy. The ruler’s wives and female relatives were at the top, and a great many other ladies were there to serve them. Similar to the ladies in waiting of European royal courts, these women cared for the rooms and wardrobes of higher ranking women, assist them in hygiene and grooming; and entertain them, keep them company, act as their secretaries and pass on all the latest gossip, crucial to palace intrigue. In Islamic empires, these women were collectively known as the harem. Anglo-phonic historians also use the term Harem or Palace Women to refer to the ladies of the Imperial courts of East Asia. In Christian Europe, Kings were supposed to be faithful to their Queens, but they still got up to plenty of hanky-panky with the court ladies. But in Asia, where polygamy was common practice, all court ladies were available to the monarch for sexual services, and if they took the Emperor’s fancy, even the lowest born woman could be promoted to concubine, consort or even Empress. Let’s take a look at the evolution, duties, ranks and lives of the Harem and Palace women of the imperial courts of China, Japan and the Ottoman Empire.

When discussing the history of royalty, ladies in waiting pop up frequently. King Henry VIII left his first wife Catherine of Aragon for her lady-in-waiting, Anne Boleyn, and then beheaded her for her lady-in-waiting Jane Seymour. Queen Christina of Sweden and her Lady in waiting Ebba Sparre were secret lovers. And when Marie Antionette’s lady-in-waiting was guillotined the Queen was forced to kiss the lips of her friend’s severed head. But these Ladies were doing a lot more than waiting for the monarch to invite them to bed. Let’s take a look at the evolution, duties, ranks and lives of ladies in waiting at the royal courts of Europe.

King George III of Great Britain and of Ireland and his German wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had a close and loving relationship which resulted in an astonishing 15 Children! The couple preferred a quiet life at home to court social life. George was relatively down to earth and far more involved with his children than previous generations of royals. He enjoyed tumbling around on the floor with his brood and playing games with them in the garden. Charlotte loved her children dearly but was more strict and formal than her husband. Having so many royal children was at once a blessing and a curse. If you think Queen Elizabeth’s 4 children cause a lot of scandal and cost tax payers too much money, multiply that by 3.75! And while having an heir and so many spares should have secured the line of succession. But the King and Queen were over-protective of their daughters and resisted allowing them to marry. The called Kew palace the nunnery and had romances with palace staff. The sons were far to interested in their mistresses to contract legal royal marriages and produce legitimate children. Towards the end of King George’s life he didn’t have a single legitimate grandchild, and parliament had to bribe the middle aged princes to finally walk down the aisle. The result was Queen Victoria who had to deal with the bad reputations her many wicked aunts and uncles and some serious family drama. Let’s meet King George and Queen Charlotte’s 9 sons and 6 daughters...
King George IV
Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany
King William IV
Charlotte, Queen of Württemberg
Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn
Princess Augusta Sophia
Elizabeth, Landgravine of Hesse-Homburg
Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover
Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex
Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge
Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh
Princess Sophia
Prince Octavius

Just in time for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story - here is the real story of the iconic Queen!

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is a once in a generation event which will go down in history. But will it go down for all the wrong reasons? The coronation has been surrounded by a number of controversies from what the royals will wear to who will and will not be attending. All of these quarrels really come down to a thousand year old institution, marred in outdated dogma and dripping in stolen jewels, clashing with a modern world in which people no longer revere royalty and many are struggling to live. Add in the fact that the stars of the show, Charles and Camilla are not nearly as well liked as the late Queen or the next generation, Will and Kate and we have a hotbed of coronation controversy. Let’s examine the many centuries old disputes and modern contentious issues which have, so far marred the coronation. Including a few which the media haven’t been picking over, but maybe they should. Plus I'll reveal what Princess Diana's title and role would have been had she lived.
The Crown Jewels: Koh-i-Noor Diamond, Cullinan Diamonds, other stolen gems
The Stone of Scone, Stone of Destiny
Fur
The Invitation (Green Man and Queen vs. Queen Consort)
The Cost
The Coronation Concert
Royal Family Controversies
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Prince Andrew
Who are the working royals?
If Diana had lived, what role would she play in the coronation?

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will take place on the 6th of May, 2023. The Palace has announced that it will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”. The components of the ceremony, taking an oath, anointing, investing of regalia, crowning, enthronement and homage have not altered since King Edgar was crowned in 973. And since 1066 nearly every coronation has taken place in Westminster Abbey and been performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. But over the 1000 years since, everything from the wording and prayers to the guest list and what they wore has been altered with each new monarch. I’ll use the last two coronations of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 as a guide. And look a bit into palace announcements and media speculation to guide you through what we are likely to see at the coronation of Charles and Camilla.

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is unique in modern times. The United Kingdom is the only monarchy in Europe which still holds coronations. Today let’s explore the 1000 year evolution of the English and British coronation. From the crown stolen from Edward the Confessors grave, to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon’s lavish coronation clothes and feast. From making copies of the throne and regalia for the crowning of co-monarchs William and Mary to the outrage of putting Elizabeth II’s coronation on *gasp* television. Then I’ll walk you through the rituals, regalia, relics and everything else we are likely to see during the coronation of Charles III and Camilla.

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is unique in modern times. The United Kingdom is the only monarchy in Europe which still holds coronations. Secularism and revolutions from the enlightenment through the 20th century did away with Europe’s other crowning traditions. No one wanted a coronation when crowned head where getting chopped off. But Britain is not the only modern monarchy which puts a little pomp and pizazz into celebrating the beginning of a new royal reign. Many surviving monarchies outside of Europe still hold traditional coronation and enthronement ceremonies. They are a way to keep history and culture alive, link the mystic chain of dynasty, secure the reign of a new monarch and ensure that their subjects viewed them with proper reverence. Today, we’ll explore fascinating coronation and enthronement traditions going on today in Africa, Asia and Oceania. And find out when and why 11 of Europe’s 12 surviving monarchies stopped (or never started) doing coronations. And what they do instead to commemorate the ascension of a new sovereign.

Henry VIII is infamous for his relationships with women. The domineering King took 6 wives during his 36 years on the throne. And he disposed of them with as much scandal as he wooed them – Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. But Henry had two other important women in his life, his sisters, Margaret and Mary. Their lives and complicated relationships with their brother are just as intriguing as those of the famous 6 wives. Let’s get to know the two Tudor sisters, Margaret, Queen of Scotland and Mary, Queen of France.Check out my Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/lindsayholiday

Today I’m dropping a bonus episode to introduce you to one of my favorite history podcasts, History Daily. Every weekday host Lindsay Graham takes you back in time to explore an event that happened ‘on this day’ in history. The show covers everything from famous battles to fashion firsts; medicine, science, technology, religion, politics and sports. The episodes are a quick 15 minutes each so I’m going to share 2 I think you will enjoy. First, a look at the January 24, 1536 jousting accident which transformed athletic king Henry VIII into a paranoid, overweight tyrant. And then the March 24, 1603 death of his daughter, Elizabeth I after a glorious 44 year reign. I’ll be back on Tuesday with a new episode of History Tea Time. But until then, Please enjoy History Daily! A Noiser Airship Production.

Since ancient times, placing a crown upon a monarch’s head was a powerful symbol. It was believed to bestow a heavenly mandate to rule, or even transform a monarch into a living god. Most people don’t think of King Charles as especially divine. But he also won’t be expected to smite an enemy or walk a marathon around the city as Egyptian Pharaohs did, be asked to publicly defend his claim to the throne like Persian Kings, or lead his army on a months long march to the Vatican like the Holy Roman Emperors. And Camila is unlikely to perform a blood sacrifice and summon a vision serpent, like a Mayan Queen Consort. Let’s explore the evolution of coronations across the world from ancient to modern times. See how different cultural traditions built on each other to create modern ceremonies, and learn how secularism and revolutions have done away with all the other coronations in Europe.
Ancient Egypt Coronations
Hebrew Bible Coronations
Ancient Persia Coronations
Mayan Empire Coronations
Roman Empire Coronations
Byzantine Empire Coronations
Medieval Europe Coronations
Enlightenment Europe Coronations

King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Their relationship has long been lauded as a royal fairytale. But there was a lot more going on. Wallis never really liked Edward but became trapped by her own ambition. And Edward, desperate to find any mode of escaping the insurmountable pressure of his birth rite, became obsessed with the woman who dominated him. And they were both Nazi sympathizers. The abdication of a King who wasn’t allowed by the church to marry a divorced woman was not nearly that simple. And the crisis that almost ended the British monarchy likely saved it in the end...

Nzinga was the Queen regnant of the joint kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern day Angola in Africa. She stood up to the Portuguese colonialists and defended her people from enslavement. Her brilliance, pride and perseverance forced the Portuguese to recognize her kingdoms and she remains a symbol of freedom and resistance to oppression to this day. She is one of the great Queens of African History.

Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom was known as the grandmother of Europe. She and her husband Prince Albert had 9 children, 42 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 142 great-great-grandchildren. Many of her majesty’s estimated 1,239 total descendants married into royal families across Europe, from Russia to Spain, Norway to Romania and all over Germany. In addition to their royal mama’s short stature, beady eyes and haughty temperament, many of them carried another, more dangerous genetic legacy, hemophilia. This excruciatingly painful, often deadly disorder devastated royal families, caused the early deaths of at least 10 princes and contributed to the downfall of both the Russian and Spanish monarchies. Let’s trace the hemophilia gene along the royal family tree to find out where it came from and how many of the Queen’s descendant’s fell victim to what became known as the royal disease.
Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany
Prince Friedrich of Hesse and by Rhine
Leopold Battenberg

Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia

Alfonso, Prince of Asturias

But as we will learn from the following shocking accounts, violence can only beget more violence. A double header about the history of first names and last names. “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” As Romeo pondered the significance of the moniker of his beloved we have to admit, names are something we take for granted but they are a huge part of human culture. Expectant parents agonize about what to call their new bundle of joy. Multiple studies have shown that your name affects how people perceive everything from our intelligence and personality to how we look. Lets take a look at the history of given names, where they came from, where they are coming from now and some interesting naming traditions from around the world…

King Henry VIII liked to live large and luxurious 365. But especially at Christmas. He and his wife of the moment enjoyed decadent feasts including classics we know today like mince pie and gingerbread and more surprising fare like swan, brawn and boars head. All washed down with copious quantities of mead, gruit and wine. His majesty received gop-smackingly expensive and highly political Christmas presents. He partied, played games and generally made himself a very merry monarch indeed. So don your dashing doublet and pull up your hose or lace up your loveliest corset and gown - not too tight! And lets enjoy King Henry VIII’s Christmas feast!
Plum Pottage, Mince Pie, Plum pudding, Christmas pudding
Salad
Roasts: Peacock, partridge, swan, brawn and boars head
Banquet course (dessert) gingerbread, marzipan, sugar plate, royal icing.

We’re familiar with the Christmas carol “The 12 days of Christmas” but in the middle ages, this extended holiday Christmas looked a bit different. There were plenty of lords-a-leaping and ladies dancing but the only partridge was trussed up on the King’s table next to the swans-a-swimming in gravy. And the gold rings were baked in the Christmas pudding! Medieval people dropped their plows, wrapped their spinning wheels in holly and ivy and took 12 days off, from Christmas day to Epiphany on January 6th. As the yule log crackled in the fire they feasted, played games and sports, attended mass, enjoyed subversive revelry and imbibed gallons of wassail. It all culminated into the most raucous party of the year on twelfth night! So Deck your halls, mull some wine, and cut a slice of mince pie as we join in the celebrations of the 12 days of Medieval Christmas...
Advent, December 24th - Christmas Eve
December 25th - Christmas Day - 1st day of Christmas
December 26th - The Feast of St Stephen - 2nd day of Christmas
December 27th - The Feast of St John - 3rd day of Christmas
December 28th - Childermas - 4th day of Christmas
December 29th - Feast of St. Thomas Becket - 5th day of Christmas
December 30th - 6th
December 31st - New Year’s Eve - 7th day
January 1st - New Year’s Day - 8th day
January 2nd - 9th day
January 3rd - 10th day
January 4th - 11th day
January 5th - Twelfth Night - 12th day
January 6th - Epiphany
My historically accurate 12 Days of Christmas Song:
On the 12th day of medieval Christmas my true love gave to me:
Twelve massive parties
Eleven herbs and spices
Ten archery arrows
Nine saints bones
Eight royal presents
Seven swans-a-roasted
Six carole singers
Five bowls of wassail
Four bishop boys
Three mince pies
Two alms for the poor
and a boars head on a bed of holly!

Queen Elizabeth II’s 4 children have given her 8 grandchildren. While her children were the first generation of royals to have their lives laid bare for public scrutiny, her grandchildren grew up in the limelight and have a better handle on it. The Queen’s children and their scandals nearly brought about the downfall of the monarchy. But the next generation has brought a resurgence in its popularity as young royals aim to position themselves as more genuine and down to earth, despite having a monarch for a grandmummy. Lets take a look at the mostly charmed lives of the 8 royal grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II with updates on what they've been up to in the last few years:
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
Peter Phillips
Zara Phillips Tindall
Princess Beatrice
Princess Eugenie

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is mother to four children: Charles, Prince of Wales Anne, Princess Royal Prince Andrew, Duke of York Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex The famously stoic monarch is unsurprisingly not a warm and affectionate mother. As the children grew up so did the media. Tabloids and television demanded more insight into the lives of the royal family than ever before. The mystical reverence for monarchy was lost and the Queen’s children became real-life soap stars as the press hungrily followed their every triumph and tragedy. The privileged princes and princess were expected to be charming yet accessible and to exemplify a perfect family life. Standards that, through divorce and scandal proved impossible to live up to. Let’s take a look at the lives of Queen Elizabeth’s four children with updates on what they've been up to in the last few years.

Happy Halloween! When someone dies and is laid to rest we tend to think of them as gone. But their remains may remain waiting to play a further part in history. For your consideration, here are three twisted tales about royals whose earthly vessels were not left in peace. One involves an exhumation done out of love, one done out of hate and the final exhumation may hold the key to solving a centuries old murder mystery.
1. Inês de Castro, Posthumous Queen of Portugal – All Hail the Corpse Queen!
2. Oliver Cromwell – He killed King and his corpse paid the price!
3. Richard III and the Princes in the Tower – Centuries of propaganda and Cold-case murders

Today about 85% of all serial killers are male. On the rare occasions when a woman commits murder, it is far more shocking to society. But history reveals a handful of femme fatals who took the lives of others to gain power or even for their own sadistic pleasure. Royal and noble women were particularly well positioned to indulge their evil impulses. Wealth and power gave them nearly limitless freedom to prey on peasants, who in turn had little means of seeking justice. Today we’ll investigate the cases of 5 female aristocratic serial murderers from history:
Anula, Queen of Anuradhapura, ? – 44 BCE
Elizabeth Báthory, Hungarian Countess 1560 – 1614
Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer, “La Quintrala”, Spanish & Chilean Noblewoman 1604 – 1665
Marie-Madeleine d’Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers 1630 – 1676
Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova, 1755–1762

Through most of history, royals and nobles held a place high above the peasant class. Their word was law and they could often get away with murder, literally. So much unchecked power sometimes went to a rulers head, morphing their darker urges into unspeakable acts of violence and cruelty. The lives of peasants were given very little value, and there were few means to investigate or seek justice against murderous aristocrats. High-born psychopaths were nearly unstoppable in their bloodlust and often racked up victim counts in the hundreds. Let’s investigate the cases of 4 royal and noble serial killers from history, and look at the theories that one of the most famous slashers of all time, Jack the Ripper was really a member of the British Royal family.
Liu Pengli, Prince of Jidong, 144–116 BC
Dhu Shanatir, Himyarite King, 5th century CE
Gilles de Rais, Baron de Retz 1405 – 1440
Sado, Crown Prince of Joseon, 1757–1762
Prince Albert Victor if the United Kingdom 1864–1892

Henry VIII is one of the most famous kings in English history. He is renowned for his voracious appetites – for food, wine, power and women. During his 38 year reign he went through 6 wives and for them triggered seismic changes in the religious and political landscape of the nation. But who were the women for which this larger-than-life monarch’s passions ran hot and cold? And who were they before, and in some cases after their fates were in the hands of this fearsome King? Here are the stories of the six wives of Henry VIII:
Part 1: Catherine of Aragon & Anne Boleyn

Throughout history one thing has had more impact on women’s lives than almost anything else - giving birth to children. In this episode we will explore various aspects of this paramount and awe-inspiring process and how it has changed across cultures and through time. From how we think about conception and fertility to some rather kooky pregnancy tests; from the day to day realities of pregnancy and how pregnant women were seen by their communities to the changing medical practices surrounding that most amazing dangerous moment in women’s lives, childbirth.

What makes a man a King? Aside from genetic luck and a glittering crown, it’s a castle. In this three part series, we’ll explore 15 of the most historically important Royal Castles & Palaces of England. In the last episode we explored the medieval castles built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century to impose his might upon the land. For his warrior descendants, the Normand and the Plantagenet, having a home that could withstand a trebuchet was paramount. But by the 15th and 16th centuries, war had moved from the castle to the battlefield and the new Tudor monarchs could prioritize grandiose spaces and luxurious living. It was time to move out of the dank defensive castles and in to a new breed of lavish, sprawling palaces.
Richmond Palace 1383–1649
Greenwich Palace (Palace of Placentia) 1500–1660
Hampton Court Palace 1529-1760
Palace of Whitehall 1530–1698
St James’s Palace 1530–1837
BONUS: Nonesuch Palace

They have been transformed many times over the years and have served a number of colorful purposes, from seat of democratic government to scene of tyrannical torture and execution. Royals throughout history are notorious for inbreeding. But the European royal family by far infamously incestuous were the Habsburgs (Hapsburgs). The royal house ruled Spain from 1506 to 1700 and held the Holy Roman Empire from 1452 until 1806. These two branches of the family vollied brides back and forth like ping pong balls. Cousins married cousins and uncles married nieces. All in the name of keeping wealth and power in the family and keeping their blood blue. They were oblivious to the havoc all this intermarrying was playing on their genetics. The tragic results were numerous family members with mental illness, intellectual disability, vulnerability to diseases, and a famously unusual continence which came to be known as the Hapsburg Jaw. Just how inbred where the Habsburgs? Short answer, very. Long answer, well, let's get into it! Frederick III, the Peaceful Maximilian I Charles V Ferdinand I Maximilian II Rudolph II Matthias Ferdinand II Ferdinand II Leopold I Joseph I Charles VI Maria Theresa & Francis I Joseph II Leopold II Francis II Ferdinand I Franz Joseph I Charles I Karl von Habsburg
