This week my guest is Jake Hanrahan, independent Journalist behind the war reporting platform Popular Front, who is launching a new documentary series called Away Days, covering underground countercultures around the world, from the inside. Jake is probably my most “non-noise” guest I’ve had on the podcast yet, but his understanding of true underground culture and unapologetic approach to media make this an essential episode for people involved in the noise and industrial community. Be sure to subscribe to the Away Days Youtube page to be notified when the first episode drops!

Today my guest is Harrison Phillis of the project SYSTEMS., who runs the label Necessary Fixation, and is also known for his harsh noise wall work as LOST GRAVES. His work focuses heavily on processing and process, often based around uninterrupted source recordings of specific physical acts that become the release object themselves. His full length album "Endless Tunnel," originally released on cassette by Veil Tapes, was reissued on CD by White Centipede Noise in 2023. Harrison also shared a bonus track from the tape "Disaggregate" called "Disarticulate" that you can download now on Patreon.

Jackson Kovalchik aka JHK is New York’s premier noise sound guy. With his roots in DIY and mastery of professional sound technology, Jackson has made a name for himself over the past several years by delivering immaculate and punishingly loud sound at live events in pro music halls and and underground spaces across the city. Jackson also makes noise as JHK, with recent releases on Oxen and Dead Gods, and plays in a number of gorenoise and grindcore projects. Though I still haven't had the pleasure to attend a show he's working, it was great to meet virtually and learn about his craft. This episode is co-hosted by a couple very special guests!
In the full version on Patreon, we go on to discuss new speaker technology, advice for running DIY sound, managing feedback, Jackson’s favorite sounds, more questions from the Discord, running sound for Miyuko Hino and The New Blockaders, his top fives and more. Premium Patreon subscribers can download the JHK track "Ain't A Bad Place To Be" from the USA tour split with VINCENT DALLAS and GESELING.

Over the past several years, Max Eastman's Tribe Tapes has risen as one of the most interesting labels in the international noise scene, reissuing obscure gems of 80s and 90s cassette culture with passionate personal curation, as well as working with a circle of contemporary artists that carry on that same wild spirit. Max also records primitive tape noise under his own name, TANTRIC DEATH, and a number of collaborative projects. He will be on tour in Finland this November, playing Helsinki November 6, Tampere November 8 and Turku November 9. Follow Max at https://www.instagram.com/tribe.tapes/
In the full version on Patreon, we discuss his connection to Finland, domestic noise, audio letters, Jon Olson, releasing VHS, the label Oxidation, Purveyors Arm of Distribution, releasing a tape packaged in a Mcdonalds cheeseburger, his top 5 dub records, and much more. We’re back for an AFTERBLAST with Eddie Giles Southgate of the infamous FINAL SOLUTION, now active with a myriad of projects such as DEFECTIVE, UNKNOWN HIERARCHY, and WALLMART. It’s been over 2 years since his first appearance on WCN Podcast, so it was great to catch up and hear what's been on Eddie's mind and going on in his world.
Dwid Hellion is a legend of extreme music, simultaneously fronting the pioneering and genre bending hardcore band INTEGRITY and terrorizing audiences with his extreme noise unit PSYWARFARE. Dwid was responsible for bringing his interests in the extreme and obscure into hardcore, and his personal life walked dangerously close to that edge from a young age. Dwid has been around the block and has a lot of stories to tell, and is still heavily active with both projects. He was kind enough to have me at his home in Ghent, Belgium, where we conducted this interview.

YELLOW TEARS is the infamous urological band and multimedia unit responsible for perverse industrial classics such as "The Pissmop" LP on Hospital Productions, live performances centered around gargling body fluids, and even a theme park, complete with a giant DIY water slide. Its members ran the Red Light District venue in Far Rockaway, NY, a pillar for the American underground extreme music scene, that they still operate to this day. All three members - Frank, Jeremy, and Ryan - were able to take the time to talk to me about their bizarre and unique universe in this episode of WCN Podcast.

We return after a hiatus with a very special episode with the inimitable CLUB MORAL, the legendary and pioneering experimental industrial organization formed by DDV and AMVK in Antwerp, Belgium in early 1981. Through DDV's bizarre and angular vocals and transgressive body art, and AMVK's crude electronics and graphic design, they created some of the most unsettling and austere power electronics of all time. CLUB MORAL was much more than just an audio project - it was an international hub for early industrial artists, a venue and a label, and a free space for radical art. The duo were also responsible for the extreme culture magazine Force Mental. They continue to live and work as visual, audio, and performance artists in Antwerp, where we conducted this interview at their home. You can buy DDV's incredible book documenting all of his performances at https://www.performan.org/book/
Ken Geiger is a kingpin of the thriving East Coast American noise scene, particularly that of New Jersey - one that unites young blood and veterans in an attitude of unpretentious sincerity. His prolific fried electronics project DEAD DOOR UNIT uniquely recalls classic midwest creeper noise, and he is just as active with over a dozen more collabs and side projects. He also runs French Market Press, a label releasing noise from his milieu in oversized handmade packaging in very small editions. In this interview, Ken fills me in on his story, how he sees things, and what's going on in his world. Listen to the full 2 hour version at https://www.patreon.com/whitecentipedenoise

Max Klebanoff, the Canadian musician behind the noise project DEATH KNEEL and drummer for death metal band TOMB MOLD, is an artist deeply dedicated to his craft and developing his own language within the extreme genres he operates in. His work as DEATH KNEEL has always set itself apart with its progressive sonics and introspective aura, but with his 2023 CD "Dawn Simulation" on Chondritic Sound, he began to breach more abstract and harsh territory, which he has masterfully expanded upon over the past several short-length tapes, released on his own imprint "Life Of Sensation." In our long chat, Max opens up about what drives his passion and work ethic, how he does what he does, and the conclusions of a life dedicated to extreme music. HUM OF THE DRUID is a project that has carved out its own gnarled niche in the industrial noise landscape, with its dense, cracking compositions that blur the lines between acoustic and electric sounds, and emit a distinct atmosphere of personal esotericism. Eric Stonefelt, the man behind the project, is a visual artist as well, responsible for the surreal textual illustrations adorning all HUM OF THE DRUID releases, and is a member of several obscure black metal projects. Something of a recluse when it comes to “scene” involvement, Eric was kind enough to join me for an in depth conversation about his work, philosophies, and more.

Tisbor aka Nicola Vinciguerra is a ubiquitous figure in filthy underground art, whether it be his surreal and perverted illustrations that have adorned dozens of album covers, his harsh recordings as FECALOVE or TAETER, getting touched during one of his sleazy performances, his prolific label Turgid Animal together with George Proctor, or just through his charismatic correspondence - pretty much anyone who has been involved in noise in the mid 2000s onwards knows the guy. INEFFABLE SLIME is the New Mexico based liquid noise project of Ryan O’Connor, heavily inspired by esoteric literature, American paranoia and the occult. After several fascinating tapes and CDrs over the past several years, he released the operatic full length CD Stalking The Sphinx on Virtues towards the end of 2023, a personal favorite at WCN. Ryan also runs Alarum Books, where he sells a curated selection of rare and obscure literature, and is the vocalist for the hardcore band ROYAL DRUG, who released their full length “Defend Degeneracy” on Dada Drumming.

XIU XIU is an experimental rock group with an eclectic and at times deeply noisy sound, and lyrics that deal with dark and intensely personal subject matter. They are extremely important to me personally going back to my teen years, and were my direct gateway to the world of harsh noise, specifically through hearing a remix of one their songs by THE CHERRY POINT. Jamie Stewart was kind enough to talk to me about the noisier side of XIU XIU, including working with artists such as MERZBOW and PRURIENT, memories of The Smell in LA, drug influenced sound experiments and much more. Today we make a sidestep from the noise world to talk with Yosuke Konishi of the mighty metal label Nuclear War Now! and Helios Press, a new vinyl pressing plant opening later this year in Brady, Texas. Despite the genre differences, we had tons to talk about regarding correlations in underground music scenes, the history of his label, and of course the collaborative festival with Hospital Productions happening in Osaka next month.

PAIN APPENDIX alchemizes classic sources, such as scrap metal and abrasive field recordings, into powerful and unique compositions of harsh industrial noise. An artist whose work closely shadows the arc of his personal life, his work stays close to the dangerous side of industrial music, exploring excess and degeneracy as well as spiritual evolution. Through his deep discography of splits as well as several distinguished solo albums, Pete Jennings has earned international respect for his dedication and mastery of his craft.

BURNING has been Minneapolis’s best kept secret for over a decade. A brutally honest and musically progressive industrial band fronted by Sadie Ryan, transforming personal despair and fury into an aesthetically singular assault on the sensibilities. With virtually zero internet presence and few recordings in circulation, live performances in the city have been the only way to truly experience their unique power. This interview is particularly important to me, as I was also a founding member of the band, and consider Sadie my best friend. Welcome to BURNING - you will know them.

During my visit to my hometown of Minneapolis, I was fortunate enough to catch a Tourniquet Noise show - the monthly noise series put on by Grant Richardson at the Red Sea Ethiopian Restaurant and Bar. I ran into N. Desuah of BODY CARVE there for a brief chat about his new album "Studies In Advanced Decomposition," just released on Chondritic Sound. I also sat down with Grant afterwards to talk about the series - its history, goals, challenges, and future. Of course caught live sets from SALAMANDER KEY, FORMS IN NATURE, VIATOR, and THE BLIGHT as well, who were performing that night. Respect to real people doing real things!

Mike is someone who has lived and breathed noise through relentless touring, releasing, and collecting for decades, and continues to distill his passion and focus. Jim Haynes flawlessly conjures the sounds of magnets, motors, and raw electricity in his heavy industrial noise compositions that are simultaneously austere and evocative. Rust, both as a methodology and a philosophy, explicitly permeate his sound and visual works. In this interview, Jim discusses his recent work, shares stories of his involvement in the San Fransisco sound art world, details on how he does what he does, and touches on the ultimately very human essence of his work. CUSTODIAN IS BACK. Jon Engman is well known for his long involvement in extreme music - as a drummer for death metal bands such as Brodequin and Foetopsy, and for his cold crushing harsh noise project CUSTODIAN, which has sadly been on hiatus for the past several years. Now with new releases on the horizon and a tour in Japan next spring culminating in the Machine Parts 2 Festival in Tokyo, Jon and I caught up about what he's been up to since we last talked on the podcast, and what this current incarnation of CUSTODIAN is all about.
This week's episode is our monthly WCN Video Party! On the last weekend of each month, we have a video party, where previous podcast guests and Patreon supporters get together to talk about noise and whatever else comes up. The meetings are recorded recorded and shared over Patreon, but I decided to make this week's party open to the public! Join in on the next one: https://www.patreon.com/whitecentipedenoise

Known simultaneously for the acerbic antics of his teenage years, the supportive dedication to organizing live events, and his refined skills for crushing harsh noise, Johnathan Cash a.k.a. Hollywood Johnny has been a divisive but respected fixture in contemporary American noise since the mid 2000s. In recent years, his absurdist performance oriented mainstay project BREAKDANCING RONALD REAGAN has been complimented by SUNK COST, a more studied masterclass in razor-sharp Japanese influenced harsh noise. Here, Johnny tells his story starting from the early days up until now, illustrating the complex and perhaps misunderstood nature of the man himself. In the Patreon exclusive EXT. segment, Johnny spills some Hollywood gossip on some of the biggest noise stars of the day, tells us his favorite budget pedals, and tells us what the deal with Sonic is... Jason and Door joined me from a hotel room in Virginia and his studio in Baltimore, respectively, to tell me about their new collaborative CD "Prerequisite," out now on Misanthropic Agenda. The two artists have almost opposing approaches to sound and composition, so it was fascinating to hear about how they typically work on their solo material, in contrast to what went into this collaboration.

William Hutson is widely known for his group clipping., who along with lyricist Daveed Diggs and co-producer Jonathan Snipes, create aggressive and visionary hip-hop music that incorporates harsh noise and power electronics sonics, as well as underground content and aesthetics, often collaborating with heavyweights of both genres. Before clipping., Hutson was also an active member of the rich mid 2000's noise scene with his projects RALE, ANTHRACITE, and TATTERED SYNTAX. He was kind enough to join me for a long conversation about his various fascinating projects, and share some stories about the LA noise scene, and some of his deep and passionate knowledge about hip-hop music.
