A podcast dedicated to the journey of adult chess improvement. Each week a guest will join me to discuss what has worked for them, what hasn’t worked as well, and the status of their journey.
The podcast Chess Journeys: Tales of Adult Improvement is created by Dr. Kevin Scull. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Jim. He was the first guest on Chess Journeys, 3.5 years ago. Today he returns to give us an update on his journey. He recounted the five year period where he was going hard, 3-4 hours a day. But we spent a lot of time talking about the last year and half, where chess played a smaller part in his life. We also discussed his plans to fully return to chess again.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Evan. He’s a returning guest that is pursuing master. Evan shared how his own improvement process has changed in the last 2 years, and provided a lot of advice for chess improvers. He outlined a system for examining critical position, extolled the virtues of Johnathan Rowson’s books, praised endgame studies, highlighted the value of tactics training, and suggested less time with openings. We also explored handling emotions, especially while losing. He talked about his method of fully accepting a loss and then starting over with a new goal during lost positions. This one is full of actionable improvement advice.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Nicholas. He’s a busy family man who gained 500 rating points in the last two years. We talked a lot about his main strategy of cycling tactics. He tried the 7 circles / woodpecker method many times during his life. But in the last 2 years, he has finished it twice. Both times resulted in large rating gains. He also talked about changing his openings to allow for more improvement, endgame work, and examining his games to find out where he is going wrong. Pump Up Your Rating helped him format an improvement program, and he has followed it with great success!

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Marc. He’s an adult improver trying to juggle life and chess. We had a great conversation about chess improvement. This included his suggestion of emulating a player, less opening theory, and listening to how better players process chess. Marc also explained his theory that our ratings are not a measure of our knowledge and overall skill. Rather ratings are a measure of our worst moves and ability to compete effectively. We also discussed letting go of rating and improvement goals. Marc claims that chess can be enjoyed by playing the game you love!

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Paul. He’s a lawyer with a family trying to juggle his life and chess improvement. We talked about his approach to improvement which has included opening work, tactics, Silman’s endgame course, and rapid games. Lately, Paul has started a new project, examining classic games. He uses a new approach that he calls Common Law chess. Hiis approach starts by quickly playing through the game and then working backwards to understand the story of the game. It’s an intriguing approach that he outlines in his substack: thinkinglikeachessplayer.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Shannon. During the last 20 years, he’s picked up chess a few times. However, in the last year, at 50, he’s improved about 400 points. We talked about the different sources he uses, the importance of openings in his improvement, and the impact of being 50 on one’s development. Shannon has studied a lot but sometimes struggles with actually playing enough games.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Jay Garrison about his meteoric rise from 1901 to 1907 in just 2 years! It was a great conversation about the pains of the pits of despair. Over a 2 year span, Jay hit his floor of 1700 twice, and he reflected on the pains it caused. Jay talked about his process, rethinking his process, and eventually overhauling his process. Now Jay spends most of his time turning knowledge into skill with a lot of blitz against higher rated opponents.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Matt. Having played a bit as a child, we talked about his reintroduction to chess as an adult. Matt’s story is especially compelling since he has gained about 250 points in his 40’s only spending 1 hour a day on chess. Matt has a narrow study plan of playing games, reviewing his games, doing tactics, and working with his coach. It certainly seems to be paying off in a big way!

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Will about his rapid ascent from 1000 to 2000 Rapid Chesscom. Will talked a lot about his focus on playing chess and examining his games. When asked questions like how did you learn strategy or endgames his answer was usually by playing games. The interview was a fascinating take on how just playing the game you love can be fun and help you gain piles of raing points! Most shocking may be that Will didn’t drill thousands of chess puzzles. He mainly focused on books containing tactics associated with his openings.

This week on Chess Journeys, we did something a little different. I turned the show over to I Jay Garrison and he interviewed me about my year in chess. It was a wild ride, dropping 200 points and then gaining them all back and more at the end of the year. We talked about my focus on turning knowledge into skill this year, the challenges of losing for months on end, and how great it feels to turn things around. I’ve vowed to continue not worry about ratings, but with 1800 on the horizon, it’s hard to resist.

Eric said something shocking, he doesn’t do tactics. He did complete Everyone’s First Chess Workbook, but puzzles are not part of his daily training. Eric focuses mainly on playing rapid games. He did note a few books that helped his journey such as Silman’s Endgame Course and the Amateur's Mind. We spent quite a bit of time discussing the local club that he started and runs.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Forest, the 11 year old that has been dominating our local chess club of late. The goal of the episode is to figure out how children get so good at chess. Forest didn’t surprise me with his statement that he doesn’t read books, but I was surprised to hear that he doesn’t use many online resources either. Forest mostly takes lessons, plays tournaments, rapid games on chesscom, and has done a lot of tactics. He is currently working on slowing down and playing better positional chess. Hopefully, this episode will give us all some insight into how kids get better and what we can borrow from their process.

But we spent most of the time talking about his new book: Perpetual Chess Improvement. We discussed a wide range of topics such as the process of writing, early reviews, reasons for writing a book, imposter syndrome, and my thoughts on the book. Ben provided a lot of insights about the book including why he focused on readability and breadth over depth. If you are interested in the book, this is a must listen.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Dennis about his journey from beginner to master. We focused primarily on the struggles he faced from 1800-2200. Dennis faced confidence issues, ratings plateaus, and the pandemic derailing his final steps to master. Dennis referenced a few resources such as Chess Structures and puzzle rush. He worked a lot with friends during his journey and spent a lot of time playing. Dennis is yet another example that adults can make master!

This week on Chess Journeys, I am joined by GM Noel Studer. Noel examined my last 30 games and we discussed the state of my game. I think this is a great episode for anyone wondering how to examine their own game, especially in times of rating loss and turmoil. With Noel’s help we were able to abandon ideas like reworking my opening repertoire or diving deep into rook endgames. Instead, we came up with a plan focusing on doing tactics in a specific way.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Joe Bruin. He’s a prolific streamer that I’ve run into at the last two OTB tournaments that I attended. We talked a lot about playing chess for fun without expressly trying to improve. Joe has seen massive rating gains at points in his life without studying. He mostly played and streamed a lot of chess. We discussed the joy of playing and socializing with chess without being obsessed with ratings and rating gain. This week on Chess Journeys, I talked to Michael, better known as Noseknowsall. He’s had a steady climb over 8 years of chess. We talked primarily about the books that helped him climb, the Chess Dojo, and other areas that helped his improvement. Michael credits much of his success to Jeremy Silman’s Reassess Your Chess. But Michael also recommends many other books such as Silman’s Complete Endgame Course and Strategic Chess Exercises by Bricard.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Elaynah. She’s a new but dedicated chess improver. She’s made rapid progress from about 400 - 1600 Chesscom rapid in around a year. She spoke about her journey including focusing on not blundering, endgames, tactics, and master games. We explored with detail her first tournament, the National Open in Las Vegas where she crushed the beginner sections. Elaynah also streams chess 5 days a week. This week on Chess Journeys, the focus is on my year in chess and a recap of the National Open. Guest of the show Jay Garrison joined me and shared his wisdom on many of the subjects. We focused on tournament prep, tournament performance, who I met at the tournament, ratings dips, what I worked on this year, my goals for next year, and handling setbacks. Hopefully, you enjoy the show!

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Hannah. She started chess with the Queen’s Gambit in 2021. Since then she’s been able to raise her rating at least 500 points, mainly by playing a lot of chess. Hannah found a club early in her journey and has been able to play mostly unrated OTB games. This inspired her to study tactics and some endgames. Also, look out for her story about phone smashing!

This week, I spoke with Paul. He has a fascinating chess journey. In his 20’s, Paul achieved master and was knocking on the door of the FM title. Thirty years later and some health setbacks, Paul is trying to recapture his previous strength and perhaps even build upon it. We talked about a wide variety of topics such as his training methods, the challenge of living up to one’s rating, the psychology of going to a chess tournament again, and of course his victory over GM Bisguier. It was a fascinating conversation about how life and circumstances can make the chess journey all the more challenging, and hopefully in the end, rewarding!

This week, I spoke with Brad. We have similar lives, but he has had a much sharper ratings gain. We talked about his focus on playing over studying. Although he has enjoyed Gotham Chess videos and courses, as well as Naroditsky’s speed runs. Brad also recommended a few books such as Amateur to IM. We talked quite a bit about Brad’s first OTB tournament and his experiences with coaching.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Nick. He’s a founding Chesspunk member and Chessable beast. He’s gained about 175 points in the last year. We focused on what he’s changed including studying master games, switching to the Ruy Lopez, doing less opening work, joining the SayChess accountability training group, and taking breaks. It was an enlightening conversation from someone who was able to do what we all desire, gain those precious ratings points!

This week on Chess Journeys, I had the honor of talking to Philemon. He is the rare person that climbs from new player to master as an adult. Phil shared the secrets to his success: love the process, immersion (putting in the time), and well timed breaks. Phil provided several resources that he used to improve such as The Art of the Attack, My System, Silman, and Tal’s Life and Games. Philemon is certainly an inspiration to adult improvers everywhere, and I hope you enjoy the episode!

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Dan. We focused on his comeback to chess in 2021. In about a year he gained almost 300 rating points! Better yet, his approach to improvement was fairly simple. Dan focuses mainly on analyzing his games, categorizing blunders, eliminating blunders, controlling time issues, and turning knowledge into skill. This week on Chess Journeys, I had the pleasure of talking to Matt. We spoke briefly about his journey as a child and adult. Most of the interview was spent discussing his thoughts on adult improvement. His conclusions are motivated by data analysis. His most shocking assertion is that adult improvers should spend less time studying and more time playing! We also went over the advanced program from his improvement website Chessgoals. It was an insightful interview that has certainly made me rethink my own journey.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with IM Kostya Kavutskiy. We focused on three main topics: his chess improvement journey, endgame studies, and the Chess Dojo. It was refreshing to hear Kostya’s journey sounds so similar to other adult improvers that I’ve talked to. Wrestling with time and many holes to fill is such a challenge even for an IM. We talked a lot about the value of Endgame Studies and the contribution of his work Chess Studies 101.

When I knew Cody he was around 1700, but he was able to peak at over 2000! He provided a lot of tips about books, rating gain, and rating loss. Until his last tournament, he had lost 150 points in 6 months. He shared his response to the situation. We also discussed our performance and takeaways from the Western Class Championships.

This week on Chess Journeys, I am joined by Peter. He’s an adult improver that picked up the game as a child and played in high school but put it aside for 20 years. After coming back to the game, he had a quick rise to 1300, and then a slower rise to 1500. However, since then, he has been stuck in a plateau, or possibly, a pit of despair. We talked a lot about his struggles with losing, learning to appreciate the game, the benefits of coaching, and what has worked for me. It was a fascinating dive into the mind of someone who has been able to find an alternative to raging after losses.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Matthew. He’s a dedicated chess improver who picked up the game at 48. He initially struggled greatly, but with dedication and focused study, he has lifted his rating as high as 1900 USCF. Matthew spent a lot of time talking about the adult brain, its limitations, and how he has sought to overcome them. It was a wonderful interview for us older adult improvers that face the reality of slower data acquisition and processing power.

In part 2 of my conversation with Omar, we focused on preparing for your first chess tournament. We covered 3 categories, pre-tournament, during the tournament, and tournament etiquette. This spanned a wide range of topics such as taking notation, eating food, when to resign, and playing 3D games before a tournament. I posted a video covering this topic in more depth for anyone interested: Tips for Your First Chess Tournament: https://youtu.be/OYn-nCl8pak

This week I spoke with Omar. We had an amazing almost 2 hour conversation. It seems best to split it over two episodes. In part 1, we focused on the last year of Omar’s journey. We spoke in detail about his approach to chess improvement diving into his obsession / addiction. We discussed his current approach of playing games rather than studying. We also talked about whether or not his chess obsession has become an addiction that has a negative impact on his life. Omar’s honesty and openness are always refreshing and enjoyable!

This week on Chess Journeys, Zach from episode 22 makes his return. He talks extensively about his quick climb to 1800 and then devastating fall back to 1480! We talked about how he dealt with adversity and worked his way back to a new high of 1850. Zach recommended a number of resources such as Susan Polgar’s defensive book Learn Chess the Right Way, Book 3 and Survive and Thrive. It was a fascinating conversation, and I’m impressed that Zach didn’t walk away when at his peak adversity.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Tai, or as he is better known, Chess By the Numbers. We had a great conversation about his journey and improvement. The three primary topics were starting a chess club, finding training partners, and turning chess knowledge into skill. Tai’s journey is like many of us, struggling to find time and people to play with. But Tai did the unusual, he started his own chess club … twice! His story is an inspiring one in which he asserts that if you build it they will come.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Stacia Pugh. It was an inspiring and fascinating conversation with the most obedient student that I’ve ever met. We discussed her massive ratings gain from 1000 - 1791. But we spent more time on her slide back to 1500, as Stacia rebuilt her game from the ground up. We discussed why she did it, how bad it felt, and how she persevered despite the setback. She is truly a Phoenix who is currently rising out of the flames of that disaster with a goal towards hitting 1800 soon. Stacia provided many resources and tips on how to improve and get the most out of coaching relationships.

This week on Chess Journeys, guest host Neal Bruce interviews me, Dr. Skull. I reflect on my chess origin story and returning to the game a year ago with high expectations. This is a challenging episode for me, as I process the disconnect between spending 500 hours on chess this year and making no ratings gains. Neal does a great job as my therapist, and I hope our conversation is helpful to others struggling with plateaus. This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Andrew. He’s 24, has a career, and is obsessed with chess. Andrew’s had tremendous growth over the last 2 years. He started by getting whomped by his 800 roommate, but now has a current peak of 2300. Impressive stuff indeed! We talked about a wide range of topics such as videos, books, and his love of chess. My biggest takeaway from the interview is that Andrew hasn’t used plans to guide his progress. Instead, Andrew does what he enjoys. Sometimes that means studying, other times that means playing chess. If Andrew isn’t in the mood for chess that day, he doesn’t force it. He isolated two books as having the biggest impact: My System by Nimzowitsch and Silman’s Amateur’s Mind. He also spends a lot of time on Chessable with books such as the Woodpecker Method and 100 Endgames you must know.

We discussed other topics such as his thoughts on coaches, the psychology of OTB tournaments, and the importance of calculation.
