Professional Weaver Podcast

This week we are speaking with William Storms from New York. William is a professional weaver in both the industrial and artistic realm. Through his industrial work he is working with Jacquard looms and designing intricate repeat designs that will be translated for use in the public realm. His artistic work explores materials and hand manipulation to create dynamic pieces of art. One of his ongoing pieces is a rug that was woven with bullets collection within a respective country to weave a ballistic map. Each of the bullet casing’s headstand reveals the country and manufacturer of origin. These maps were woven during his residencies at the Museum of Art and Design in NYC, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the Governors Island Residency in NYC. A new project where his artistic vision and industrial knowledge have blended together is working in conjunction with Crosby Street Studios to create a collection of handwoven custom rugs. These rugs explore the tradition of American Craft through a modern lens. It is his first collaboration of this kind and the rugs are available in four colorways, as well as fully custom colors and sized to order.

The Bauhaus, an acclaimed school that embraced the principle of equality among artists and the arts alike, has continued to influence and impact American art long since it’s closure. The weaving workshop in particular was a place of developing aesthetic and supporting innovative teaching methods. Many weavers have “On Weaving” by Anni Albers sitting in their bookshelf.

This week we are talking with Anne Fernweh of Witch Craeft from Vermont. In her bio, Anne quotes Alexander Langlands by saying "To be craefty is all about resourceful living and about going back to the basics: a mindful life achieved through beautiful simplicity." Her work envelops this idea, making each piece personal, thoughtful, and powerful in its grace. While she was earning her Master’s Degree in Dress and Textile histories in Scotland, the seeds for Witch Craeft were sewn. The business grew out of her desire to blend her love of textiles with her earth based spirituality, graduate studies and the ancestral tradition of handweaving. Since childhood she has been delighted by textile art "transmuting mundane fibers into magical heirlooms", learning techniques and skills from the hands of her mother and grandmother.

This week we are talking with Jovencio de la Paz from Oregon.

Jovencio is an artist, writer, and educator. His work explores the intersection of textile processes such as weaving, dye, and stitchwork as they relate to broader concerns of language, histories of colonization, migrancy, ancient technology, and speculative futures. Interested in the ways transient or ephemeral experiences are embodied in material, de la Paz looks to how knowledge and experiences are transmitted through society in space and time, whether semiotically by language or haptically by made things. He is currently Assistant Professor and Curricular Head of Fibers at the University of Oregon.

I am drawn to his work by the organic patterns that he creates using the TC-2 loom. The work is beautiful intricate and bold at the same time, drawing the viewer in for a closer examination. It is interesting to try and follow the pattern line through all of it’s evolutions through the cloth.

This week we are talking with Angie Parker of Angie Parker Textiles in Bristol, England. In 2014, she established her business by creating distinctive and intricate rugs and textile art. Her speciality is in using traditional weaving techniques, such as krokbragd and giving them a fresh outlook in modern colors and proportions.

Her distinctive style was developed while she pursued a career in costume design. While working, she would continue to weave on small scale collections. Through these collections, she was able to combine her instinctive weaving and daring approach to color with time honored techniques, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary. After time spent in India, and more recently, the colorful graffiti and houses in her Bristol neighborhood, her color palette has been influenced in a way that connects with the viewer in a joyful and exciting way. This week we talk with Erika Hewston, a sculptural and wearable weaver from Pennsylvania. Though Erika has skills as a quilt maker and repairer, she is primarily a weaver of functional wearable items and luscious textured wall hangings. All of her work focuses on the interaction of vibrant color to create striking statement pieces. Using a variety of materials for her wall hangings, she invites the viewer to explore the depth of color created. And with her wearables she focuses on the drape and texture to let the wearer encompass the rich colors and textures gracefully with next to skin softness. She views and uses her work as an escape from the craziness of the real world, creating whimsical landscapes to get lost in.

Erb is a nationally award-winning American Artist who graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016 with a BFA in Ceramics. During her time at MICA she also studied illustration and textile design. After studying ceramic sculpture in Florence, Italy, and receiving her degree, she returned to her hometown in Durham, North Caroling, where she has worked at the North Carolina Museum of Art, taught workshops at a variety of art centers, served on curatorial jury panels, and given lessons and art talks at various institutions.

Through her work, she studies the figure through a contemporary lens, focusing on human connection and mortality. Her interdisciplinary work explores the impact of anxiety and trauma on identity and gender expression. Finding herself constantly aware of the connections between memory, body and media, she presents the human form examining the dissonance between the psyche and external patriarchal culture. The pliable connections between the physical and psychological are illustrated by the intimacy between the figure and its surroundings. Her resulting work, showing the explorations between mind, body, and healing, evoke personal narratives in psychologically charged environments, questions the impact of gender and identity on our perception of subjective reality.

Francisco (a fourth generation Master weaver) and his wife Laura were born in Teotitlán del Valle (teohtetlan del valyay), a Zapotec village in Oaxaca, Mexico. I love how she explores colors and textures with different materials in her work, always exploring the options in which handwoven textiles can be applied in a functional way.

This week we talk with Joseph Young of Interwoven from California. Joseph is a weaver who specializes in contemporary Zapotec weaving. For a little background, the Zapotec are an indigenous people that have lived in the Valley of Oaxaca for at least 2,500 years. Their one-of-a-kind weaving traditions have carried on to this day, showcasing unique colors and symbolism. Joseph, fell in love with this style of weaving and dove in, learning how to create tapestries in both the traditional and contemporary style. From the start of getting hand selected wool fibers spun for warp and weft, naturally dying the yarn, and executing the designs, he is intimately involved with each step of the weaving process, making these creations an extension of himself.

This week we talk with Sydney Sogol of Syd’s Threads from Durham, North Carolina. With an eye on the environment around her and her hands rhythmically working on AVL looms, Sydney brings to life wearable pieces that celebrate how nature and technology can work together to make art. She hand paints her warps with wide swaths of bold colors, pulling color palettes and ratios from her research of birds and marine wildlife. The complex weave structures she creates make the colors shimmer throughout the cloth. Her computer aided designs also serve to accentuate the qualities of the yarn she uses. These yarns are manufactured in a closed circuit loop, minimizing its environmental impact by reusing all water and using only non-toxic chemicals.

Our first full episode! This week we kick things off talking with Scott Norris of Elam's Widow. Scott is a prolific weaver who lives in Mass. Working out of his converted garage, he creates beautiful heirloom fabrics using hand dyed linen. His pieces have evolved over time to a select palette, precise structures, and a luscious, crisp hand. Prominently in the center of it all you can see his primary loom, a 50 inch, 8 harness Norwood. He has customized it with an auxiliary warp beam, which allows for him to have precise control over his tension (which is especially important while working with linen).

Not only is his work amazing, but the way he talks about creating textiles is very thoughtful and has a lot of self awareness about how he views himself with his work. We happened to catch Scott while he is at an interesting stage in his career, a shift in creation. The work that he is passionate about and throwing himself into is much different (though very much right in line) with the work he has created in the past. So, we hope you enjoy our chat that we had with Scott about his philosophy, his inspirations and the beautiful work he creates.
