This week we are speaking with Erin Riley from Brooklyn, NY.
Erin is a tapestry weaver who has dedicated her time and life to creating tapestries that portray different aspects of culture that are either overlooked or are difficult to confront. Since receiving her MFA from the Tyler School of Art she has done many solo and group exhibitions all over the country and the world and has received many awards. Her work often focuses on the darker side of our culture. A few of the subjects she has covered have been nude figures from pornography or selfies, drug paraphernalia, and mental illness. The tapestries she creates has evolved over time to showcase her skills as a weaver, but also her eye as a dedicated artist.
We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk to Erin about how she became a weaver, discovering and establishing her artistic voice, and how she feels she fits into the weaving community.

This week we are talking with tapestry Weaver, Tommye Scanlin, who resides in the Southern Appalachian region.
Tommye is an artist who observes and responds to her surroundings for inspiration. Her primary artistic medium is handwoven tapestry, an ancient method of working with fibers to create images. As she seeks images and ideas to interpret into tapestry she experiences her surroundings as closely as She can. Photographs, sketches, paintings, and writings all are part of the research she puts into her work.
She has been living in the southern Appalachian mountains for most of her life and her surroundings are filled with the natural forms of woods, streams, and fields. Her eyes are frequently drawn to the myriad details of the landscape and many of her tapestries are based on aspects of those details, simplified and enlarged in a weaving.
Tommye has also written two books on the topic of creating tapestry weavings: “The Nature of Things: Essays of a Tapestry Weaver” and her newest book “Tapestry Design Basics and Beyond: Planning and Weaving with Confidence.” Her passion for teaching others is infectious, and she is always learning new things to pass along to others. It is inspiring and we hope that you snag her books to read up on her awesome tapestry weavings.

This week we are speaking with the Sean Dougall and Andrew Paulson of the design studio Dougall Paulson, based out of Southern California.
As co-founders of the multi-disciplinary art and design studio, they seek beauty through new forms of weaving, furniture, lighting and objects. Using narrative as the thread that binds ideas together, their unique take on visual storytelling is the starting point for the creation of objects that straddle the fine, decorative, and graphic arts. They approach their practice with a focus on curiosity and discovery. Specifically speaking about their handwoven work: the art textiles explore the ways in which light appears through absorption, reflection, and transparency. Which, under the right lights, look like the pieces are glowing internally.
We hope you enjoy our conversation about how they grew and developed their design practice, the challenges of weaving with metal, and what inspires them to keep exploring and moving forward.

This week we are talking with Janet Phillips from England. Janet has been designing and weaving for over 40 years after studying Industrial Textile Design at the Scottish College of Textiles, graduating with a First Class Honors Degree. Color and texture are still the foundations that keep her weaving. She dyes most of the yarns she uses and she is continually experimenting and sampling to find new weaves and textures.
Janet also has a deep commitment to teaching others to be creative with their weavings. She has authored two books, Designing Woven Fabrics and Exploring Woven Fabrics, which encourage weavers to really understand how a woven fabric is constructed guiding the weaver to develop their own designs and structures.
Enjoy our conversation with Janet as we talk about how she became a weaver, teaching woven design, and the importance of sampling to understand woven structures.

This week we are speaking with Rachel Snack of Weaver House Co from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Weaver House is a project that Rachel created as an intuitive response to returning home after living in Peru, and the continual longing to be at the loom. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Fiber and Material Studies from the The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her Master of Science in Textile Design from Philadelphia University. She can normally be found in the studio or nearby in the woods, always inspired and constantly creating.
Weaver House is a yarn shop, textile studio, and weaving school located in Philadelphia. The goal of the space is to create heirloom textiles in homage to craft tradition, and the dialect between maker and loom. Creating a space where the woven practice is grounded in the idea of growing a tangible language, to regain tactility and a hand-making consciousness within the home and in relation to the body. Though the school is currently closed due to the ongoing pandemic, Rachel is finding new ways to inspire communal collaboration and weaving education.
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Rachel as we talk about finding weaving, starting Weaver House, her new podcast, and more!

We have been keeping ourselves busy these past couple weeks, working with clients, getting stuff done at the spinning mill, and giving presentations about what we do.
This week we wanted to continue the conversation about how we got to where we are and take the opportunity to answer some questions along the way. We are sharing the audio from our presentation at the Careers in Textiles Symposium that was hosted by the Handweavers Guild of America this past Friday.
In case you missed it and the other fabulous talks from other industry leaders, check out the website weavespindye.org/cit to watch the videos of the presentations. It was an honor to be selected to speak along side of some amazing designers and business people in the textile field.
If you are an aspiring professional weaver, please feel free to reach out to us with your questions. And like always, if we don’t have the answer, we will get you in touch with somebody who does.
We will be back with our regularly scheduled programming next week, so stay tuned, and stay curious.

This week we are speaking with Crystal Gregory in Kentucky. Crystal Gregory is a sculptor whose work investigates between textile and architecture. If the nature of architecture is fixed and permanent then the opposite would be a textile, collapsible and movable. Both mediums define space, create shelter, and allow privacy. A textile, however, has the advantage of flexibility. It is a semi two dimensional plane that has the ability to fold, drape, move and change to its surroundings. It is pliable.
Gregory received her BFA from the University of Oregon and her MFA from the School of the Art Insitute of Chicago from the Fiber and Material Studies Department. She has received many awards and her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally including the Rockwell Museum of Art, Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Projects, the Hunterdon Art Museum and at Black and White Project Space. She has had her work featured in Hyperallergic, Surface Design Journal, Art Critical and Peripheral Vision Press. She is an Assistant Profession within the School of Arts and Visual Studies at the University of Kentucky and currently shows with Tappan Collective in Los Angeles, California as well as Momentum Gallery in North Carolina.
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Crystal as we talk about different ways of learning and teaching weavings, how much there is still left to learn, and creating artwork using woven fabric.

This week we are talking with Peggy Osterkamp. Peggy is the author of the New Guide to weaving series, Weaving for Beginners – An Illustrated Guide, and has a prolific blog available to share tips, stories of her travels, and artistic discoveries. She has found great joy in sharing her love of handweaving with students near and far and has a wealth of knowledge to bestow upon them.
Personally, I have been following Peggy’s blog since I was in college and first learning how to weave. To this day I still find her artwork inspiring. The experiments with materials, structures and presentations are a testament to how she finds play whenever she sits and works at the loom. And her ability to clearly explain the techniques and methods she uses is a must for any weaver who wishes to reconnect with their weaving skills on a different level.
We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk about how she became a weaver, the joys of sampling, and what the process was like putting her knowledge in book and blog form.

This week we are talking with Anne Low from Canada. Anne Low is a multi-disciplinary artist who uses sculpture, installation, textiles and printmaking to explore the relationship of historical contexts of contemporary functional objects and themes that occur, such as the domestic and the decorative. Her works highly focus on the physicality of an object and utilize her historic knowledge of weaving and various methodologies.
She has been featured in many group exhibitions, held selected solo exhibitions, and was nominated for the Sobey Art Award in 2019 (Canada’s largest award for young Canadian artists). Her work is subtle and sublime, showcasing fine craftsmanship in the light of installation art.
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Anne as we talk about weaving on frame looms, studying and learning old techniques, and dividing time between art and utilitarian weaving.

This week we are talking with Lucy MacDonald of Arra Textiles from Scotland. Arra Textiles is named after Lucy’s great grandmother, Arra MacDonald, born and brought up on Orkney, she passed down her love of textiles to Lucy. After graduating with a degree in textile design at university, Lucy worked for a range of different companies before deciding to invest in a loom and start her own business.
Her work is inspired by the ever changing sea scapes that are near and far from her home and studio. The desire to travel always pulls her in directions of different coastlines from the archipelagos of Finland, the southern coast of Australia, or the beautiful coastlines in Scotland. Each year she produces a small collection of bespoke scarves which are woven using hand-dyed locally sourced yarn. While creating, she strives to produce as little waste material as possible by using every last bit of material and reselling any yarn cone ends. The majority of the yarn she uses is sourced in Britain, maintaining the traceability factor in her work.
With her zero-waste production policy and emphasis on traditional craftsmanship, she can be sure that her work will become timeless heirlooms to be enjoyed for generations to come, before biodegrading naturally at the end of its’ lifespan.
We hope that you enjoy our conversation with Lucy as we talk about her education, what it was like starting up her own studio, and what goes into her complex woven designs.

We heard you, and this week we are talking about… ourselves!
We were recently asked to give a presentation about what we do and we thought this would be a good opportunity to share it with you. We talk about how we were ramping up our business before the pandemic, how we pivoted, and how we are working on growing our business and our weaving skills today. 2020 was a doozy for all of us, but somehow we managed to not only survive, but our business started to thrive.
It was a fun presentation that we are using as our jumping off point for our upcoming talk at the “Careers in Textiles Symposium” hosted by the Handweavers Guild of America. This is a two-day online symposium, spotlighting leading professional and industry trendsetters, sharing their experiences and providing insights on the diverse and changing landscape of textiles and fiber art. The symposium is open to all, but is geared toward young professionals, recent graduates and students. We will be speaking on Friday, March 19th at 4 pm.
We are passionate about connecting the new generation of textile designers, artists, and creators with people who have been in different facets of the industry to create a mentorship bond to help everyone grow. We know we wouldn’t be where we are now without the guidance and support of others who have blazed the trail ahead of us. We hope that we can connect with future professionals and help guide them into finding or creating their own careers within the textile community.
So, enjoy the audio portion of this presentation, and if you are interested, there is a video of this prevention with the accompanying slides and media in the show notes.
We hope that you will tune in to join us and other amazing professionals during the “Careers in Textiles Symposium” taking place March 19th and 20th.

This week we are talking with Bridgette Extraordinaire of Raanu Handwoven from Oregon. Raanu Handwoven is a closed loop production, meaning that Bridgette will reuse material waste created during the production process for additional products. She begins with mill end yarn, which is rescued from large manufacturing houses where they were destined for the landfill. That yarn is then woven by hand in the US without the use of electricity, utilizing mechanical Dobby looms to create beautiful patterns and textures. Each garment is woven to size, which significantly reduces the amount of scrap left on the cutting room floor. What remains will then be transformed into additional product. A trademark of her work is that the warp threads are plied, producing a beautifully subtle gradient in the cloth. Raanu came about from the master passing along their knowledge and tools to their apprentice, continuing the weaving legacy.
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Bridgette as we talk about her apprenticeship, pricing, what it takes to create a new line of wearables, and more.

This week we are speaking with Margot Becker from Hudson, New York. Margot Becker is an artist, weaver, and educator. Margot Handwoven is her line of functional, versatile textiles that playfully explores the intersections of art and craft. Each one of a kind piece is created by combining traditional patterning and techniques with intuitive design. All of her textiles are one of a kind and designed on loom to be worn and loved in your everyday.
Margot Handwoven originated as part of an independent study of the process of creating textiles from start to finish, born from a deep desire to understand the origins and lives affected by the production of the cloths that surround us in our day to day. In 2010 Margot moved to the Hudson Valley to work with Buckwheat Bridge Angoras, a fiber farm with a solar and wind-powered fiber mill on site. For eight years Margot worked on the farm and in the mill where she aided in the process of growing and spinning the wool and mohair she uses in her textiles. Choosing to devote her time to her weaving practice, she no longer works directly with the animals. However, she continues to uphold her values of the conscientious production through careful research of material sources, full transparency of fiber content, and micro-scale production.
We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk to Margot about weaving as an artist and a craftsperson, creating with a transparent supply chain, and pricing her work.

This week we are speaking with William Storms from New York. William is a professional weaver in both the industrial and artistic realm. Through his industrial work he is working with Jacquard looms and designing intricate repeat designs that will be translated for use in the public realm. His artistic work explores materials and hand manipulation to create dynamic pieces of art. One of his ongoing pieces is a rug that was woven with bullets collection within a respective country to weave a ballistic map. Each of the bullet casing’s headstand reveals the country and manufacturer of origin. These maps were woven during his residencies at the Museum of Art and Design in NYC, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the Governors Island Residency in NYC. A new project where his artistic vision and industrial knowledge have blended together is working in conjunction with Crosby Street Studios to create a collection of handwoven custom rugs. These rugs explore the tradition of American Craft through a modern lens. It is his first collaboration of this kind and the rugs are available in four colorways, as well as fully custom colors and sized to order.
We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk to William about how he found his way to weaving, how his art and industrial practices feed into each other, and where he sees his working moving to in the future.

The Bauhaus, an acclaimed school that embraced the principle of equality among artists and the arts alike, has continued to influence and impact American art long since it’s closure. The weaving workshop in particular was a place of developing aesthetic and supporting innovative teaching methods. Many weavers have “On Weaving” by Anni Albers sitting in their bookshelf.
But, is that the epitome of weaving advancement? Are there other weavers who have pushed the boundaries of design and theory? Our upcoming round table, “Beyond the Bauhaus”, we are talking with Evee Erb, Tegan Frisino, Lilly Marsh, and Justin Squizzero with Eric Frisino as the moderator, different influences for our work. During the discussion we will explore inspiring weavers, techniques and methods, and other sources of inspiration.
We hope you join our conversation as we explore “Beyond the Bauhaus” what inspires our panelists.

This week we are talking with Anne Fernweh of Witch Craeft from Vermont. In her bio, Anne quotes Alexander Langlands by saying "To be craefty is all about resourceful living and about going back to the basics: a mindful life achieved through beautiful simplicity." Her work envelops this idea, making each piece personal, thoughtful, and powerful in its grace. While she was earning her Master’s Degree in Dress and Textile histories in Scotland, the seeds for Witch Craeft were sewn. The business grew out of her desire to blend her love of textiles with her earth based spirituality, graduate studies and the ancestral tradition of handweaving. Since childhood she has been delighted by textile art "transmuting mundane fibers into magical heirlooms", learning techniques and skills from the hands of her mother and grandmother.

This week we are talking with Jovencio de la Paz from Oregon.
Jovencio is an artist, writer, and educator. His work explores the intersection of textile processes such as weaving, dye, and stitchwork as they relate to broader concerns of language, histories of colonization, migrancy, ancient technology, and speculative futures. Interested in the ways transient or ephemeral experiences are embodied in material, de la Paz looks to how knowledge and experiences are transmitted through society in space and time, whether semiotically by language or haptically by made things. He is currently Assistant Professor and Curricular Head of Fibers at the University of Oregon.
I am drawn to his work by the organic patterns that he creates using the TC-2 loom. The work is beautiful intricate and bold at the same time, drawing the viewer in for a closer examination. It is interesting to try and follow the pattern line through all of it’s evolutions through the cloth.
We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk about how he came to weaving, his inspiration, using a TC2 loom, the accessibility of complex weaving and more.

This week we are talking with Angie Parker of Angie Parker Textiles in Bristol, England. In 2014, she established her business by creating distinctive and intricate rugs and textile art. Her speciality is in using traditional weaving techniques, such as krokbragd and giving them a fresh outlook in modern colors and proportions.
Her distinctive style was developed while she pursued a career in costume design. While working, she would continue to weave on small scale collections. Through these collections, she was able to combine her instinctive weaving and daring approach to color with time honored techniques, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary. After time spent in India, and more recently, the colorful graffiti and houses in her Bristol neighborhood, her color palette has been influenced in a way that connects with the viewer in a joyful and exciting way. We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk about what it takes to start a business, pricing her work, the arts education in the United Kingdom, krokbragd, and the joys of color.

This week we talk with Jessie Mordine Young from New York City. Jessie is a textile curator, teacher and maker, primarily focusing on weaving and tufting. In some of her most recent bodies of work, Jessie responds to her time spent in rural landscapes. She spent time living in Ireland, a small village in Iceland and in the Adirondacks. Her time in secluded places left her feeling energized and inspired. After having months to engage in deep thought on her practice, sincere observance, and connection to her surroundings, a new series of woven work that reflects her meditative experience has emerged.

This week we talk with Erika Hewston, a sculptural and wearable weaver from Pennsylvania. Though Erika has skills as a quilt maker and repairer, she is primarily a weaver of functional wearable items and luscious textured wall hangings. All of her work focuses on the interaction of vibrant color to create striking statement pieces. Using a variety of materials for her wall hangings, she invites the viewer to explore the depth of color created. And with her wearables she focuses on the drape and texture to let the wearer encompass the rich colors and textures gracefully with next to skin softness. She views and uses her work as an escape from the craziness of the real world, creating whimsical landscapes to get lost in.
We are having her on the podcast this week to help promote her first solo show, “Contemporary Weavings”. This week we will be talking with Evee Erb from North Carolina. Erb is a nationally award-winning American Artist who graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016 with a BFA in Ceramics. During her time at MICA she also studied illustration and textile design. After studying ceramic sculpture in Florence, Italy, and receiving her degree, she returned to her hometown in Durham, North Caroling, where she has worked at the North Carolina Museum of Art, taught workshops at a variety of art centers, served on curatorial jury panels, and given lessons and art talks at various institutions.
Through her work, she studies the figure through a contemporary lens, focusing on human connection and mortality. Her interdisciplinary work explores the impact of anxiety and trauma on identity and gender expression. Finding herself constantly aware of the connections between memory, body and media, she presents the human form examining the dissonance between the psyche and external patriarchal culture. The pliable connections between the physical and psychological are illustrated by the intimacy between the figure and its surroundings. Her resulting work, showing the explorations between mind, body, and healing, evoke personal narratives in psychologically charged environments, questions the impact of gender and identity on our perception of subjective reality.
We hope you enjoy our conversation as we talk about weaving’s place in the craft world, making mistakes, advice, and more.

This week we talk with Justin Squizzero of The Burroughs Garret in Vermont. Squizzero challenges modern definitions of progress by creating functional textiles that celebrate the natural world and the dignity of human labor. Echoing a time when utilitarian objects were entirely handcrafted, his work connects material, maker, and user across time and place. Squizzero’s venture, The Burroughs Garret, draws on the textile traditions of his northern Vermont home, marrying natural dyes and fibers with a reserved aesthetic rooted in early New England. Produced on his 19th-century farm using 200-year-old hand looms, Squizzero’s textiles examine the role of handcraft in a post-industrial society, questioning the human experience in a digital age.

This week we are talking with Francisco and Laura Bautista of Bautista Fine Hand Wovens from Oregon. Francisco (a fourth generation Master weaver) and his wife Laura were born in Teotitlán del Valle (teohtetlan del valyay), a Zapotec village in Oaxaca, Mexico. The weavings they create are inspired by the the beauty of traditional Zapotec weavings, Navajo art and the Bauhaus design. They are both fascinated by the infinite possibilities of crossing threads, and the magic of dancing with their looms. Even when honoring the ancient ways, they never forget that weaving is more than a museum piece- it continues to grow with each generation as a living art, combining tradition with new expressions of colors, imagery and symbolism.

With an eye on the environment around her and her hands rhythmically working on AVL looms, Sydney brings to life wearable pieces that celebrate how nature and technology can work together to make art. She hand paints her warps with wide swaths of bold colors, pulling color palettes and ratios from her research of birds and marine wildlife. The complex weave structures she creates make the colors shimmer throughout the cloth. Her computer aided designs also serve to accentuate the qualities of the yarn she uses. These yarns are manufactured in a closed circuit loop, minimizing its environmental impact by reusing all water and using only non-toxic chemicals.

This week, we are super excited to have our guests, Cecelia Frittelli and Richard Lockwood of Frittelli and Lockwood. They have been involved with textiles for decades, and just so happen to be our weaving mentors. They have been producing their line of handwoven wearables from various studios, but most currently out of the Textile Studio in Saratoga Springs, NY. Their clothing for men and women are wonderful pieces that showcase their combined talents of textile design, tailoring, and finishing touches that would make any person look dashing. We hope you enjoy as we catch up with our friends and mentors, Cecelia Frittelli and Richard Lockwood, the weaving dream team.

Our first full episode! This week we kick things off talking with Scott Norris of Elam's Widow. Scott is a prolific weaver who lives in Mass. Working out of his converted garage, he creates beautiful heirloom fabrics using hand dyed linen. His pieces have evolved over time to a select palette, precise structures, and a luscious, crisp hand. Prominently in the center of it all you can see his primary loom, a 50 inch, 8 harness Norwood. He has customized it with an auxiliary warp beam, which allows for him to have precise control over his tension (which is especially important while working with linen).
Not only is his work amazing, but the way he talks about creating textiles is very thoughtful and has a lot of self awareness about how he views himself with his work. We happened to catch Scott while he is at an interesting stage in his career, a shift in creation. The work that he is passionate about and throwing himself into is much different (though very much right in line) with the work he has created in the past. So, we hope you enjoy our chat that we had with Scott about his philosophy, his inspirations and the beautiful work he creates.
