WHAT’S ON YOUR Bench.
Stuart - Some smaller kits such as Bandai’s Death Star II were completed over the last month and a half. I have a Meng Spice Harvester from Dune to be painted and weathered and I’ve started a Revell 1/24 Land Rover Series III
Geoff - nothing. Sweet diddly squat. Up to my neck in a 1:1 home demolition/renovation with lots of “surprises” that - like most surprises - were unexpected! On the positive side, the F16 I built as a USAF pilot's retirement gift was very warmly received, as was the C47 in Rocco Flamefart Fire Rescue markings, which now has a place of honour on my brother’s mantle. Also still plugging through the latest ex-modellers stash and library…
Terry - Christmas birds are done.
[foogallery id="3845"]
Tony - I’ve been working on a bunch of (Premium) P-Bandai Gundams since September. There are a total of four Master Grade, (1:100 scale) Gudams which were re-released in special black and neon colors. Included are Barbatos, Exia, Aile Strike along with the original RX-78-2.All are being built straight out-of-the-box, in an attempt to breathe some life back into my numerous, ongoing modeling projects which have been relegated to my Shelf-of-Doom!
To date, I’ve completed 3 of them, (Barbatos, Exia and Aile Strike), with just the RX-78-2 Remaining.
In the meantime, I recently started two Gundams from Netflix’s Requiem of Vengeance series. I just finished applying and cleaning up a wash I applied to my assembled RX, and am in the midst of trying to do a color conversion of the dark gray portions of the Zaku. I’m looking to give these parts a metallic look, but using diluted AK True Metal (paste).

Terry: Some moderate progress on the Moosaroo Cup preparations. Progressing on the 1/72 Destroid Tomahawk. The joints get painted grey, so they have to be done and masked before the tan body bits can be painted.

Rob Riviezzo
I'm Rob Riviezzo, I'm from Long Island, NY. I've been building models since I was a small boy, probably around 6 or 7 years old when I used to sit with my dad while he made his HO scale train set. Took a break while in my teens and got back into the hobby around 21 after my mother fell ill and I was looking to get my mind off of all the craziness. I primarily build armour models, focused on mostly German and Russian WWII. I will also build the occasional modern armour subject or Sci Fi model like Gundam, or Star Wars. I am a very active member of Amps (Gotham Amps) and my local IPMS chapter (The Long Island Scale Model Society). I started the Modeling Insanity Podcast in May of 2023 after the Modeling Miscreant Podcast which I was a Co-Host on fell through. I am also now the Associate US Editor of Military Modelcraft International which is the largest English speaking Armor Military magazine in the world. I am a monthly contributor and reviewer for the magazine. I am known for my photo-etch and scratchbuilding.

James Morando
I’m writing now because our local club, IPMS Santa Rosa, will be hosting a show on October 12, 2024 and I wanted to ask if you could please include our show during any upcoming model show “shoutouts" on your podcast.
We are very excited about this year's show. This year we will be adopting an Open/GSB judging format for the first time. In fact I’m pretty sure this will be the very first show ever to use an open judging format in the IPMS Region 9, which encompasses Northern California and Nevada. So we’ll be making a little history! With that in mind, the theme of our show will be “Evolution.”
I have attached our show flyer below but the pertinent information is that: It will be held from 9-4 pm on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Rohnert Park Community Center in Rohnert Park, California. Free admission and $12 entry fee for first 3 models. Lots of great vendors are lined up, we will have a terrific raffle, will be doing a build and take table and then the Open/GSB judging. We are also asking folks to bring kits and model building supplies to the show for donation to support our charity initiative for Help Heal Veterans, a wonderful organization that provides free theraputic kits and modeling supplies to veterans.

Hi Stuart,
Paul Redding
Just to say I am following your Tamiya 1/350 build with interest as I bought the 1/450 Hasegawa version earlier this month as part of a carrier / IJN aircraft rabbit hole I went down...I have steered clear of anything Japanese all my modeling life but finally, curiosity got the better of me and I caved. Lots of research on IJN aircraft and how it all got built up resulted in about 18 aircraft kits...doh! Luckily there were some sales on including the canopy masks so that helped...
I haven't built any warships before (except Airfix Victorious in 1/600 in the 60s as my father was on it in the Fleet Air Arm as a flight engineer bringing the aircraft up on deck and have pics of it in Sydney Harbour (see attached). You can also see its' sister ship Illustrious and maybe you / Geoff can identify the aircraft on board - Martlets? One photo shows an aircraft that seems to have stuffed it into the tower. I seem to have ended up with quite a few carriers as I also get sucked into watching docos on PBS America which is fatal
A doco on the scuttling of the ships at Scarpa Flow and the film Sink The Bismark didn't help either so that ended up with a few more purchases; I can't see the detail in 1/700 so minimum is 1/450 or the usual 1/350
Like you I try to stay away from PE but have bought a few railing kits and also for the radar arrays/antenna if not included; plus the wooden deck sets and a couple of brass barrel sets for Prince Eugen...
I also concur with your plan to paint common parts on the sprues and build in sub-assemblies ( I have been doing this for my model railway wagon kits in batches of 4 or 6 - makes for alot simpler build)
I am mentally prepared for a ship build; after 1/48 aircraft and 1/24 cars, its going to be very different.
Hope the extended break allows y'all to recharge and come back rested - I build for the relaxation like I did all those years ago pre-internet and do it to my own standards ie no interest/point in trying to achieve the standards of some of the professional kit builders out there on YT or the forums

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Not a ton of time but finished Yamato and started a 1/72 Italeri F-22 which will be made into a what-if CF-22. Also helping a club member with the estate of a fellow modeler. Lots of stuff to deal with.
Geoff - two “request” builds on the go. My brother wanted a ceiling hanger for his cottage, so I Pulled a 1/48 Revell DC3 from the stash to paint as a fire spotter plane, with custom decals by club member Pablo! The same brother also asked me to build a F-16CJ block 50 for a retiring USAF pilot who is married to his good friend's daughter. Been very busy!
Terry -
Off the bench: Yamato Dreadnaughts and P-47H. On the bench: Moosaroo Cup items. Working on something nice, getting all the bits together. Also trying to get the Crusher Joe Harpy finished up. Mostly I’m getting things out of the way now, either finished or stored so I have space for the Moosarro diorama.
Rob - currently painting the Bronco Panzer III A for the second part of a 2 part article for Military Modelcraft International. The build was in the September issue of the magazine. Also working on reviews for Resin Tech Model (RTM) for their KV and SU-100Y. Lastly working on the 1/16th Stug III G for Boresight, the Amps club magazine.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Geoff - The Hunters, by James Salter. A 1956 novel about F86 Sabre pilots in the Korean War.
Terry - Completed Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Final Architecture. Very satisfying, a big involved experience. He follows the same characters through the series, and it seems like he really came to love some characters who were initially just support characters. Reading a few informal series now, but I have some nonfiction on the deck, Steve Brusette’s Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. Also reading the Cimarrean Conan graphic novel.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - A bit more work on the Yamato, but it has been a ‘real life’ 2 weeks with too many other things going on.
I did take advantage of the sale at Broughdales.
Geoff - a little more work on the Goblin, but mostly real-life chores and getting the place ready for summer.
Terry - the P-47H is languishing a bit, I have been more enthusiastic about the Yamato Dreadnaughts and Crusher Joe Harpy. Painting moving along really nicely on those, now the Dreadnaughts move into masking preparing for more painting. Used the complimentary color priming at Anthony’s suggestion on the Mars pattern Dreadnaught.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results by Shane Parrish and D-Day by Martin Gilbert.
Geoff - The Dambusters Raid by John Sweetman, and The Guns of Normandy by George Blackburn
Terry - Getting near the end of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Shards of Earth - I’ll read the rest of the series in sequence. His storytelling is as good as ever, with believable characters, pretty much all of whom have a compelling point of view. Also started the Hellboy Omnibuses (Omnibi?). I actually think I haven’t read these before, somehow. Maybe excerpts?

Stuart - Started on the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato, the mould is from 1973. The plan is to build it out of the box with just an aftermarket wood deck. Started working on the hanger deck crane and hanger deck doors.
[foogallery id="3728"]
Geoff - masking and painting on the Martin Mars waterbomber, the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and shuttle and a 1/48 V2, but just starting a 1/48 XF-85 Goblin.
Terry - A lot of work done these past two weeks, since Toshi is getting me up around 5:15. The Regult is getting decals and detail painting. The XP-47H is now in dull coat with some pastel work. I hope to have it finished the week after Wonderfest. I’m starting to paint the Yamato Dreadnaughts, with some fresh AV Game Air paints. Also painted a 1/72 ICM BM-24-12 kit, I picked up 4 at AMPS, got a new Grad but got 3 from the mid-90s. It looks okay…the rocket bed is rough and i’d recommend scratch if you want it to sing

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results by Shane Parrish
Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout by Cal Newport
Geoff - “The Better Angels of Our Nature” by Steven Pinker. Good, factual survey of history establishes that despite what some people seem to think, violence in the West is at a historic low point.
Also “Spies in the Sky” by Taylor Downing - a history of aerial intelligence in WW2.
Terry - Finished Madeleine Murray’s Song of Achilles. It’s brilliant. She really brings the Greek characters to life, all these legendary names. I started to wonder how she would finish the story, since the narrator Patroclus must die before Achilles. The end will bring you to tears. What next? The 18th volume of That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, so that’s a background read. I have some nonfiction to choose from.
Frank - Reading Book 2 of the Theodore Roosevelt bio by Edmund Morris - Theodore Rex and picked up Israel - A History by Martin Gilbert

I love the podcast, keep up the good work!
I was just listening to your banter with Terry about the only reason you like Special Hobbies being their tendency to keep their website up to date.
Which leads me to believe you might enjoy the website of Arcus Hobby Color, they are a long-time paint producer from Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine. They keep the website up to date with new paint releases, and include historical references, a blog and a model gallery where they do an in-depth magazine style feature on different kits finished using their paints.
Stay safe,
Joel from Mansfield in the UK

Good day Stuart,
I hope you're well.
Thank you for the podcast, which is excellent.
Geoff's Zeppelin diorama was 100% fun and I am sure the actual documentary record of this event was lost/destroyed prior to Germany's defeat in World War 1.
I have attached two pictures from the latest issue of New Scientist magazine (a weekly science magazine from here in the UK, which I believe is available in Canada). The feature of interest, "The Power of Solitude" suggests our solitary hobby is good for our health if you exclude the chemicals we may be breathing in! The term used is "crafting solitude" where we carry out a meaningful solitary activity which reduces stress and anxiety and improves relaxation.
Here in the UK some doctors working in our National Health Service ( still 'free' at the point of delivery) do social prescribing linking people to activities and social groups to improve well-being. Help for Heroes has already established that model making helps with mental health.
So maybe the next time I visit my GP, I will be prescribed an Airfix model kit!
Best wishes to the team.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Real Life going on so not a ton of bench time. Some more mechs are being painted.
Starting the Hasegawa F-15J in 1/72nd. Got the front end almost done and then had to deal with a short shot in the area of the gun port.
Another RCAF what-if? Perhaps…
My order from China came in, got the Dspaie circular sander.
Geoff - Did two articles for IPMS Canada covering the Moebius Discovery and HAL kits and (of course) the completely truthful Zeppelin build, and with ALL my obligations for writing completed, I decided to start some new ones! Resurrecting old built up kits, with a resin Martin Mars water bomber and having fun with old kits, with a 1977 Revell 1/144 Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Space Shuttle. Also plugging away on an older 1/48 Sukhoi Su-25 and a resin 1/144X B70 Valkyrie and X108 Rapier, just because I saw them at Heritagecon and desired them - busy!
Terry - not a lot of progress, but working on numerous items. Decals done on the XP-47H, and some painting on the Regult. Plus, bits and pieces here and there on other kits. I’ve been travelling a bit, and getting other things done around the house.
Starting to work on the schedule for Wonderfest vehicle demos. Some first-time presenters again this year, plus the return of Bauble Young.

Stuart - Finished the Dune Ornithopters, Great little kits. I am also working on painting the bases for the USS Dallas and Typhoon class 1/700 subs. Other projects include painting mini’s both Battletech and some fantasy clerics. It’s nice to have a break from more complex kits; these projects have been doing that for me. Now to decide what I’m going to do next……
Anthony - 1/72 UN Spacey Legioss, Finished a No-paint HG RX-78, the Gundam Hazel, and a few more Shelf/Box Queen projects in the works!

Terry -
Masks off, next up decals! Those fuselage cooler doors mean insignia needs to be cut up a bit, fortunately, I have an abundance of those insignia.
Blue was a primer coat of AV Wolf Grey (Maybe my most-used color) followed by Tamiya blue - I added some flat base to help with opacity, but wow it was too much. I'll never learn with Tamiya flat. Followed by Tamiya gloss blue, so it's like 5 coats of thinned paint. I think a second coat of gloss over that will be needed, and will help with the markings too. I have a set of P-47 stencils, and I'll use them on this project since I want it to be a production aircraft. I also have an idea for the shark mouth.
I see a couple of things I should address, but won't.

Changes in modelling over the years and the impact social media has had on styles, techniques and even subject matter - the rise of non-historic subjects (eg: film and TV models, sci fi, anime, etc.) and what the future holds.
My guess - WW1 and 2 subjects become more niche as truly historical in nature and entertainment subjects increase as modellers age out.
***************************************
WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - CF21 is complete. Working on some battle mechs as as well as the first of two Ornithopters from the latest Dune movie. Meng made a kit similar in quality to the Bandai micro Star Wars kits. The first one I built in a landed configuration. I should have added nose weight to it, but it’s going on a base so I can glue it down. I think the scale is around 1/200
[foogallery id="3618"]
Geoff - finishing off the Zeppelin vs Pterodactyls project, which has been fast and fun. I also put two articles together for IPMS Canada - on the Zeppelin project and my 1/32 Revell Lysander target tug. Now I’m back at the Moebius 1/144 Discovery from 2001 which is the subject of another long delayed article. My guilt at the delay finally forced me to get at it!
[foogallery id="3611"]
Terry - Moving along with the XP-47H. Looking good under some paint, so I am cautiously optimistic. The Haseagawa Regult is looking good under some paint as well.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - YF-21 painted up. Decals are going on. Looking really good now. Going to be called the CF-21 Peregrine.
Moosaroo Cup needs to have pictures done this week.
Geoff - Wayward Zeppelin LZ77 is cruising above an uncharted tropical volcanic island near Iceland after being blown WAY off course during a raid in 1916. Harassed by Pteradons, their accompanying (don’t ask how they got there!) Fokker DR1 Triplanes cannot protect the doomed ship! Dinos and DR1’s are coming this week from fellow club modeller Ron, but it’s really coming along nicely - even with the required PE work!
Terry - Not a lot of time while I was traveling for business, at our plant so just a single hotel but still, not a ton of time. Big dinners are awful. On the plus side the Steam Deck is great for travel time. I did get some work done on a few projects, the P-47H is coming along, and I brought the 1/48 Jeep which comes with the Tamiya P-47M kit to the club meeting which was fun to work on. Getting the paint touched up a bit on the Regult so I can mask off grey areas.

She is a materials scientist who has chosen a number of materials and objects to describe while making things in workshops, like iron, glass, plastic, brass etc. Very interesting and I’ve been interested in materials science
I started reading the graphic novel omnibus of Fritz Lieber’s Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, which I think I signed up for via Kickstarter? This is a major influence on fantasy to come - like Elric etc.

Hey guys!
I wanted to say that I really enjoyed the show. I’ve been listening since last year and enjoy the topics and discussions.
I did want to ask a question. I too am a big fan of the Robotech/Macross series and especially the aircraft. I’ve heard that you guys get extras for your kits and wanted to know where you got them.
I’ve been reading the books that the show “The Expanse” was made from and really love them.
Thanks for the great show!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Geoff - building the ancient 1/48 Lindbergh Snark and equipment kit. Pretty good molding given the age, but raised panel lines and rivets for sure - neither of which bothers me really. Lots of reinforcement is required internally though, as it’s quite large and the joins are not large. Putty too, but not a crazy amount. It’s my transition kit to non-aircraft models, as it has the launcher and tractor as well!
Stuart - Work continues on the YF-21 Good fit as is to be expected from this Hasegawa release. Lots of priming and painting of sub-assemblies lie ahead.
Terry - did not paint the Regult, it got a bit cold in my garage shop. I did do some work on the Halberd Models XP-47H, it’s as easy as expected from a Tamiya conversion.

Hi All at Scale Model Podcast.
Just want to thank you for a very informative and easy-listening podcast. It definitely helps me get through my days at work.
Just catching up on the latest episodes and heard the update from Scale ACT 2023. It was the 1st time I'd attended and was an amazing show! I met up with some people in person for the 1st time who I have talked to for a few years on Instagram. We ended up going out for some refreshing adult beverages both nights of the weekend. I can definitely understand it when people say that it's the people that make the shows.
During the episode, I heard you mention the Ram Kangaroo at the show. That was mine. It was the Gecko Models kit and it was a dream to put together. Here are a few more pics of it (attached).
Keep up the great podcasting!!

There are three large halls, totalling about 100,000 sq.ft. The 170+ different clubs and SIGs were situated in the middle of the halls, and 120+ vendors around were on the outskirts and along the walls.
I displayed some models on the Danish SIG, and had a great time.
I spent waaaay over my budget, but I justify it saying ´I am saving on shipping costs…’

TOPIC
End-of-year summary
General discussion.
Hi’s and Lows of 2023
***************************************
WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Taking a brief break on the Moosaroo cup to figure out what I want to do in terms of the diorama. Got a larger base.
Battle mechs are almost completed and deciding what to build next. YF-21 Perhaps.
[foogallery id="3539"]
Terry - Finished the Christmas Birds. Sanded and resurfaced the Lamda carrier decks, they were a bit rougher than I would have liked. I think they may be ready. Also went back to the Hasegawa Regault kit. I think I have no choice but to build, mask and paint it. I had thought I could paint parts first, but that’s not going to work.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Coming of Age in the Milky Way by Timothy Ferris. Just getting into the 20th Century.
Terry - Finished Ed Yong’s An Immense World. Reading the second Elric collection by Moorecock. Also still reading the Reacher series of Graphic Novels.

Terry did visit the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. Some nice collections of movie props, and a Leika Studios special exhibit.
The paint rack I got was the hanging rack from Lazy Dog Studio. If you look at options you will find the size you need. Pro Acryl is the medium size cutouts.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Slow and steady on the Moosaroo Cup. The cab and back bed have been attached to the body. Wheels on later this week. I have some HO-scale sheep I want to add to the diorama. Primed with white, working on dry brushing next.
[foogallery id="3512"]
Geoff - struggling with rigging the 1/72 Airfix Handley Page 0/400 and got back to a shelf queen - a 1/72 Airfix Albatross DV in Richthofen livery. Also started playing with armour weathering on a Russian tank donated by Frank Donati of our London Club. Next though will be a Christmas project to build “something cool” for a grandson. Thinking about the SR75 Penetrator but in bright colours!
[foogallery id="3508"]
Terry - Got a good coat of NATO black on the Lamda carrier decks, and glosscoat over that. I’m debating whether I need to buff that or just paint markings. It depends on how many decals I will use vs. painting. Also working on this year’s Christmas Birds. About 90% done with them.
***************************************
WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Coming of Age in the Milky Way by Timothy Ferris. Just starting the 19th century. It’s fascinating how some discoveries of things were done independently but also some would not have happened without the work done by previous generations.
Geoff - SAS Bravo Three Zero by Des Powell and Damien Lewis. Just started, but I already feel terribly inadequate when measured against the SAS!
Terry - Still reading Ed Yong’s An Immense World. Through hearing, elecrosensory and now into magnetic sense. It’s amazing how many senses are modifications of other nerve and chemosensory mechanisms.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - More painting experiments with the battlemechs, mostly seeing what I can do with contrast paints and the airbrush. Moosaroo cup - Priming is done, and painting has started on some body parts.
Geoff - Continuing work on the Airfix 1/72 Handley Page 0-400, which is quite the bear! Mostly working on real world stuff like battening down the hatches for winter though.
Terry - some work on the Aldrin-class - mostly buffing paint at this point. I hope to get a good coat before masking and painting detail and panel colors. I did start one of Bandai’s Gamillon multi-deck carriers. It’s the four-deck Lambda carrier.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - More work done on the Moosaroo cup. This is proving to be quite a challenging kit and requires quite a bit of planning, due to its small size and finding a logical way forward. For example, the cab consists of quite a few parts, several of these will need to be assembled, primed and painted first before attaching them to the rest of the kit.
Also working on some Battletech Mini’s, trying a new technique called slapchop.
[foogallery id="3480"]
Geoff - lots of reorganizing the hobby room to get a display cabinet installed (removed from the dining room) and make the reference materials more accessible. In the process of creating an index I found a good article on the Handley Page 0/400, so I started work on the old (1968) Airfix kit. Lots of work to get the wing “ribs” to scale (the kit molding had 2x4’s as ribbing tape!) but it’s not a bad kit once that’s fixed.
[foogallery id="3476"]
Terry - Some work on the Aldrin class, I need to do a bit more on that as well. While in Cincinnati I built a little shelf cabinet unit for some 3D printed paint racks for the Pro Acryl sets. It’s a bit tight, I may need to do some filing or have them printed 10% bigger.

Hi Stuart, just sitting here in Toulouse waiting for SWMBO to fly in from Munich on a delayed flight and to say what a great show that was as I drove over here.
I had just watched a doco on Ark Royal yesterday so went looking for a 1/48 kit of the Fulmar and saw the new Trumpeter version but no detail if it had the wingfold, so you mentioned it in the New Releases with a link to the pics was perfect. This will now be on my Xmas list for SWMBO ☺
I think I am also going to bite the bullet and get that Trump 1/32 Devastator. pity the Trident wasnt in 1/72 as that was a lovely aircraft
Your show notes are absolutely superb and in general, your show is the best
So keep on, its a great show and hope you can take it easier for a few weeks at home, as having been in the hospital myself, its not a fun place to be

Currently reading Ed Yong’s An Immense World about the Umwelt - sensory world of animals. I just started that one. WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Between the local model show and work done in my basement requiring me to pack up the bench not much has been done. The bench has been mostly put back with an eye to try and make things more organized. Still a work in progress. Just a bit more work on the Moosaroo cup entry
Geoff - similar to Stuart, lots of real life stuff these last few weeks, but I DID get a mojo wake up call to go back to a kit I started in the 1980’s: a metal kit of a 1909 Ford Model T Tourer! Way out of my comfort zone, but that’s the point really. What triggered this was the desire to use some of the “new” (to me) paints I received last month - some nice old Metallics. In the end I didn’t use them (because 1909 Fords didn’t have metallic finishes…), but I am still plugging away on this ancient kit, and I’m enjoying it!
Terry - Working on the Moscato F-203 Dragon and the Aldrin Class by Will Barton. Both are in the stages of pinning and prepping, so a fair amount of work without a lot to show. I did pick up a Tamiya 1/48 P-47 for that XP-47H conversion which is serenading me with its siren’s song. Toshi won’t let me sleep past 530, often up in the middle of the night so I’m a little sleep deprived!

Terry: Close to finishing the first Elric book by Michael Moorcock. My 17 year old self would have loved this. I took a break when Volume 16 of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensura) was released, so I re-read 15 and then 16. It’s mostly wrap-up of the big invasion and stage-setting for the last major arc of the novels.

I just finished listening to Anthony's interview with Rob Booth concerning the future of the IPMS and I wanted to write in to say thank you.
I am exclusively a Sci-Fi modeler. Thanks to Dave over at the PMM podcast I am also a member of IPMS/USA but it's only because I feel an obligation to support the hobby in general. There is honestly not much for me in IPMS currently, and I'm not very engaged in the organization. However, thanks to Anthony's interview with Rob, I decided to vote on the new amendments to the constitution and by-laws, in the interest of inclusivity. I imagine there are a lot of people out there like me who would love for IPMS to promote and support their niche of this fantastic hobby but who are apathetic to the current iteration of the organization.
One issue I would have loved to hear addressed in that interview is the chicken and egg problem of new contest categories. Rob said that they track the level of participation in each of their categories and try to respond with new categories and modifications to existing ones where necessary. My question then is: why would modelers enter sci-fi / gundam / other "niche" models into IPMS contests if there are no categories that properly value their contest entries? And if IPMS is waiting until they see significant levels of participation in those niches to create sensible contest categories... well, you see the problem.
If IPMS wants to truly be seen as inclusive it needs to proactively court modelers in areas of the hobby that it has traditionally overlooked by reaching out to those communities and working directly with them to establish new contest categories and other opportunities within IPMS. If you want something, you have to go after it. You can't wait for it to come to you.
Just my 2 cents.
Keep up the great podcast,
Gino

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Not much progress this week, work is taking up much of my time and the summer heat zaps the mojo. I did pick up the Arma Hobby 1/48 Hurricane Mk. IIc and it’s a very nice kit at first look.
Geoff - Got the first colours on the Savoia Marchetti, but otherwise, it was all about getting the house spiffy for a wedding group. Now that that’s done, we can maybe relax…
Terry - Cleaning the bench a little at a time. I discard some clutter each time and have found things I knew I had somewhere. Doing a little resin kit cleanup, too - including the Elric White Wolf figure which needs more cleanup than thought. Pups are getting bigger - Toshi is 37lbs now. Including Toshi and Zeus’ attempt at a New Wave album cover.
[foogallery id="3418"]
Kris - Boxes, mailing labels, and books, books, books! Arma Hobby 1/72 F-6C Mustang for next book Mini Hangar No.1 published by Joycraft. Secret project which I can’t go into details on at the moment.
Anthony - Priming the Gundam Hazel and working on some finer detail painting for the GP03. Just killing it when it comes to procrastinating on painting figures for my Bosnia MIFV build!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Now that I know what the Moosaroo cup kit is I can plan what I want to do with it. Painting of the solar panels and main body of the Hayabusa probe is done, now to start working on masking. I’m going to be cross-eyed by the time this is done.
Geoff - Summer doldrums still, but laying on multiple spray coats of white to the Savoia Marchetti S55X. I decided to paint it in Porco Rosso colours, even if it’s not exactly the same aircraft model!
Terry - Building two 1:1 scale Husky Maniacs. Setting up a new workstation computer since the old one was giving me a lot of trouble with its USB bus. Nothing really on the model front. Toshi, 5ish months old and Zeus, 9-10 months old. Both are sweet boys.
Anthony - 1/144 Finishing the painting for the Gundam GP03; prepping another Gundam TR-1 Hazel. I’m also working on a Lancaster front-nose blister vac form master for a fellow club member.
What are we reading
Stuart - Confessions of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell
An amusing tale of a year in the life of a used bookstore owner in a tourist town in the north of England.
I had started this a while back but lost focus :-) With the events of the last few years I have had trouble keeping focus, several people I know continue to recommend this one.
Geoff - finished “Over the Edge of the World” - great read. Looking for the next one that isn’t Clive Cussler.
Terry: Moving along well with Clean Sweep, fighters are now over Berlin. The Mustangs are still troubled with teething problems. I did pick up Moorecock’s Elric Trilogy to read while travelling etc.
Anthony - I’m eagerly awaiting my “Super Detailing F-14 Tomcat” book!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Working on a 1/144 Bandai Tie fighter. Painted the solar panels Aqueos Metallic Black, then after a gloss coat going to try Mr Metallic Color GX Metallic Violet. In a very thin coat. After masking the panels off I may use the same Violet color for the other parts.
I have also primed and airbrushed gold onto some parts of the Hayabusa Muses-C space probe.
Geoff - really stuck in the summer doldrums, partly due to chores but also just not terribly motivated, so I’m just plugging away at several kits at the pre-painting stage.
Terry - Slow summer with puppies! Ginny brought a (maybe) foster husky home. Zeus is about 9 months old and is doing a stellar job wearing himself and Toshi out. I have had a chance to do a bit of sanding etc. here and there.
Chris - Rebuilding the hobby studio in the new house. Phase 1a is complete. Phase 1b to begin when I build up the courage.
Improving the Tamiya 1/48 Corsair - Build video at https://youtu.be/JLK9h2Sg-qg
I’ll be painting this build next and hope to have a video out soon.
WHAT ARE WE READING
Stuart - The Victorian Internet by Tom Stage - A history of the telegraph and how it’s effect on civilization mirrors quite a bit the creation of the Internet.
Geoff - still reading about Magellan!
Terry: Still reading the same books, I’m about halfway through Tom Cleaver’s Clean Sweep - P-51Bs have started arriving in England. I’m getting the urge to read something big and engrossing like a China Mieville or Neal Stephenson novel. Maybe Discworld, I’ve never read that series.

Mini-Topics: Discussion on FB recently about whether 3D printed subjects are actually models. You still need to clean up and paint them.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH + WHAT ARE WE READING
Stuart - Not much, I haven’t decided what the next big project is going to be, so I’m going through some stuff on the shelf of shame. Working on the 1/144 Bandai Tie Fighter. Priming first, followed by 1st coat of paint on the solar panels.
Geoff - Same. Lots of real-life stuff getting in the way of building. Helping my brother build a shady pergola area on his boat dock and racing RC speedboats over drinks! Still sanding and filling and sanding the Delta 2 Savoia Marchetti S55X - a real bear!
Terry - Cleaning up the shelf queen Harlock’s Arcadia (Green), now that I’ve figured out how to do some painting. Cleaning up the Aldrin Class and more importantly Catalyst Creations’ Space Academy Seeker kit - a big 3D print we’re selling. It’s well printed but needs cleanup like all 3D prints. Meanwhile, a few weeks after losing our 13-year-old Remy, we now have a puppy. Toshi is about 3.5 weeks old so I have not been getting much modeling work done.
Anthony - Hangar Queen Blitz Continues! HG GP03, touching the HG Stark Jegan, breaking the barrier on painting figures for my MIFV build. Vac-forming MHM Cat’s Eye Canopies for members of Macrossworld.com. I’m buying one of Sean’s 3D printers, so that journey will begin!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Beaufighter is almost done now that I found the missing landing gear bay hiding in plain sight. The Mig 37 has been primed now to make the final choice of a what-if scheme. Then to figure out what’s next in the build queue.
Geoff - disassembling several odd built up kits to be rebuilt, including the 1/72 Delta Savoia-Marchetti S55X kit of the classic twin hulled seaplane from the 1930’s. I have quite an assembly line of kits waiting for the airbrush station again! A friend from our club - Bill Webb - was at Wonderfest and brought me back a grail kit: Aoshima’s Transparent Thunderbird 2 with all the rescue vehicles! Just have to get into town and trade kit for cash later in the week!!
Terry: What day is it? Where am I? What is this sleep thing everyone tells me about?

David Lockhart - President IPMS USA
Bio:
I live in Duluth, GA (40 miles NE of Atlanta). Prior to my retirement (Aug 2021) I was in diagnostic microbiology sales. I started building models young (around the age 9-10). I modelled until college and like many, college, marriage, career & kids, but a bit of a hold on modelling. I started back when the kids got into middle school and started ignoring Dad. Since then, I’ve been going full steam ahead.
I am a bit of an eclectic modeller: I build ships, planes, sci-fi. My favourite models are sailing ships. I’m finishing up a couple of chapter projects (Panther Ausf. D tank) and will get back to finishing my Revell 1/96 Constitution.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Trying to get the Beaufighter done for the “Let’s go Pacific group build” Too much club show planning and other real-life tasks have sucked bench time away.
Also reading Shattered Sword - The Untold Story of Midway
Geoff - mostly real-world granddad stuff this time, but I did pick up a number of built-up kits in support of a local RCAF social group (1/144 Martin Mars, 1/72 Avro Avrocar, etc) and have been stripping them and cleaning them up. Most are rare, odd resin things and I’m really enjoying the process of bringing them back to life!
Terry - I should be done with the 1/48 Fine Molds Mitshubishi Babs by the time this episode airs. I’ll get photos this week. Cleanup work on the 1/1400 Aldrin Class continues well. I have been replacing some greeblies, and need to to a bit of scribing reinforcement. That’s always the problem with 3D printed kits - if they have a lot of details it’s difficult to remove the grow lines. This will disappear as each generation of printers improves. I know how I want to paint this, and will need to order some registry decals from G-Cals.
Just finished Tom Cleaver’s Under the Southern Cross, his second book of the early pacific air war.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Beaufighter paint on and complete. A satisfying feeling when the masking comes off. Several small areas require some touch up, but over all it looks good.I’m trying Tamiya XF72 as I do not have an AK colour for the RAF brown currently. The XF72 is labelled as JGSDF brown and is slightly lighter than the XF52 Flat Earth I have used in the past. I’ve read that others find the colour closer to the actual RAF brown. Then masked and put on the AK Dark Green.
Geoff - Not much modelling, but got a long way on the rebuilding of our screened cabin by the lake! On the bench I was limited to working on the Tamiya 1/12 Datsun 240Z… a LOT of detail on this one!
Terry - The Fine Molds Mitshubishi Babs is nearly done. Dullcoat looks OK, so just some finishing bits to do. I’m trying to get it done for the May deadline.
Will Barton’s Aldrin Class version of the Shenzou ship - a TOS era version of the design - is moving along nicely, and in primer now. Some parts in their second coat after further cleanup. Will plans to have 5 or so copies to sell at Wonderfest. Decals available from G-Cals.

Stuart - Beaufighter masking for the top side is complete. Starting work on a Mig37B, trying to decide if it will be a Macross or a RCAF what-if.
Did a clean and re-org of the workbench which gave me a bit more working room and some mojo.
[foogallery id="3235"]
Geoff - vacationing with family on the east coast for most of the last two weeks so no modelling, but I did visit a great Military Aircraft museum in Greenwood, Nova Scotia and bought a few books! Read “Shattered Sword - The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway” by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully. Excellent read and a look at the battle from the Japanese point of view, using Japanese primary sources. Highly recommended.
[foogallery id="3224"]
Terry - a little progress on the Mitsubishi Babs. I had to repair some seams but now it’s all sealed up. I should get started on the panelling and some nice moderate weathering then be done. I’m cleaning up a 3D print of a TOS type variation of the USS Shenzou.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Terry - continuing work on masking the drop ship. I did cut several sizes of hexagons from a sheet of Tamiya Tape paper - the proper settings for you to remember are speed:4 and pressure:4. I ruined a sheet by presuming washi tape was the same setting. Work continues on the military Babs. I am currently resisting the urge to start work on the Kotare Spitfire.
The HK 1/48 B-25 kit arrived, it’s very nice.
[foogallery id="3201"]
Stuart - Plugging away on the Beaufighter. Got the RAF Sky on the underside but then noticed a nasty gap along one of the wing seam lines, I must have knocked it at the ‘right’ angle at some point. Going back to file, sand and paint.
Geoff - Nada. Zip. Burned myself out on all the builds in the first quarter. Well, I did do some more sanding and priming on the two Airfix 1/144 Concordes, but that’s about it. Most efforts went into demolishing our cabin by the lake (before it slides down the cliff)….

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart Masking the canopies complete and glued on.
Lots of prep going on for Heritagecon.
Geoff. Busy month… Finished the Moosearoo entry (Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51B) and submitted pictures as required - first podcast over the line according to Iain! Also finished and delivered the two 1/18 jet builds to the London Jet Aircraft Museum and submitted the associated article to IPMS Canada. Finished the CL52 and Orenda Iroquois engine and the related article for IPMS Canada as well. Finished construction of my first Gundam ever - an ancient Bandai molding of Dijeh. Finally, working on the Airfix 1/144 Concorde prototype and production versions - both kits came in one box from the Broughdale Stash. All that finishing and starting, as well as two weeks of family visit time… Phew!

Some time working on the military version of the Ki-1 “Babs.” It looks good, and is in the gloss coat phase. I’ve also spent some more time masking the Bandai drop ship and cleaning up the Halberd Models Curtiss Seahawk. That’s really nice.

Geoff - Finished the two 1/18 scale jets for the London Jet Aircraft Museum, but couldn’t deliver them because illness intervened. Also finished the Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51B Mustang for the Moosearoo Cup. All three were “obligation builds”, so it will be nice to settle down to the bench with something from my stash for a change!
Geoff builds a Gundam!
Anthony - Slowly beating my way through my stalled out guilt-inducing projects! Putting decals on my 1/144th EYE-Zak in Titans Test Team livery, which was a major conversion project that I started only years before they released a new tool kit!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Too much real life means not much bench time. Did get a start on the landing gear on the Beaufighter.
Geoff - working on the two 1/18 scale ceiling models for the Jet Aircraft Museum. Discovered that the wings were missing a full section, so had to fabricate that from sheet styrene and putty. Not happy with the ghost camouflage airbrushing job, so that’s going to need more work. Lots of new skills are being developed! 80 hours invested in the two of them so far…..
Terry - A bit of work on the Babs models, not a lot of progress. Started the Hasegawa Regult from Macross, since I don’t have enough open projects already. If I can find my tiny drill bits or buy some more I can drill fine holes to rig the Kamikaze Babs, and it will be done. A little bit of work on the Moscato Dragon.
Anthony - VF-4G Lightning III is done!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart: Working on the 1/48 Tamiya Beaufighter for the group build. Great fun.
Also started work on 2 BattleTech mini’s.
Geoff. Focused on building two 1/18 3D printed “kits” supplied by the Jet Aircraft Museum of London Ontario: a Canadair F5D and a T33. The printing was very rough, but the shapes are close. Lots of sanding and scratch building are required to get close to a decent representation, but the sheer scale of these things is impressive. Rivet counters need not apply!
[foogallery id="3076"]
Terry: Finished and photographed the Halberd Models NF-51T NASA Turbo Cavalier Mustang (link to masking file) and Dora Wings’ P-43 Lancer. Now working on the two Fine Molds Ki-15 Babs and Kamikaze versions. Also working on the Moscato 1/72 F203 Dragon kit - mostly primary building and surface correction.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Finishing the 1/144 Bandai X-Wing, getting ready for the group build with a 1/48 Tamiya Beaufighter.
Geoff - focused on finishing the construction of a new guest room/sewing room for my wife, so not much time on the bench. Picking away at finishing the Bachem Natter. Also getting back to the CL52!
Chris - Recently finished the massive Revell SR-71. No regrets! Aside from some tedious filling and re-scribing around the nacelles, it went well. My review is at: http://modelairplanemaker.com/2022/11/10/1-48-revell-sr-71-blackbird-americas-middle-finger/ and my painting video is at https://youtu.be/zNuUQ2o0vfg. Next up is the Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair for the Group Build starting December 1:
Terry - Finishing up the Dora Wings P-43 and Cavalier Mustang. Now I’m just waiting on a brass pitot for the Mustang, then they’re done! The Christmas birds are essentially done, I did start building the Bandai V-33 Stork mech carrier to do a quick paint job but have been convinced to do a very challenging paint scheme, for which I’ve cut some vinyl masks. So…holiday time maybe? Pacific group build choices are two Mitshubishi C5M2 “Babs” aircraft.
The sewer line was repaired, the leaking shower was repaired, which needs to be replaced, and solar panels were installed, Kiowa departed and missed. ☹️

Recent discoverer of your podcast and love it...great news and tips but the best is the banter between you all, and of course the guests.
I noted in the most recent podcast there was mention made of "UK museums in England" or similar. Just wanted you to know we have some great aviation museums here in sunny Scotland as well, including the National Museum of Flight just south of Edinburgh, which contains a Concorde, Vulcan, Spitfire, Harrier, Tornado, Canberra and of course the only place in the UK where there is a Red Arrows Hawk on display. Well worth a visit!
Anyway...wanted to pick your brains...a few years ago I flew in a T6 Harvard in Florida...I now have the 1/48 kit to make, but wanted two civilian pilots to add in. Do any of you know where I might find 1/48 scale civilian pilots?
Also on the subject of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson...were you guys aware he flies and displays his own WW1 fighter aircraft (a Fokker Triplane) as part of the WW1 Memorial Flight. Saw him at RIAT a few years ago and quite the display.
Thanks again guys, love the podcast! We had some RCAF Hornets pass through my local airport recently (Prestwick International Airport) and managed to grab some photos...handy for weathering references (need to scroll down the page a bit)

The next 20 years in the hobby
Random notes to discuss.
Trends in the hobby?
Rise of 3D printers, need for tech skills?
How are new modelers (Kids and adults) being engaged?
Gundams were just making an appearance in North America 20 years ago, the market now is huge.
Nostalgia is playing a larger part in the hobby. Aging out? Whose nostalgia? Changes by generation…
Better experience for first-time builders - easier and more satisfying kits. This has greatly improved in the past 20 years, multi-color plastic, good snap-fit, much better detail etc
Rise of CAD and computer design. I don’t think the future was even predictable at that point, with the rise of affordable scanning and computer power.
Dave Metzner with Polar Lights really nailed the SF and fantasy market demand.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart
More weathering done on the Tomahawk, but I feel still needs some more. Putting it aside, for now, to focus on getting the Arma 1/72 Hurricane done. Tailplanes put on and getting smaller parts ready for painting. I think I’ve got the scheme I’m going to use.
Geoff - working on finishing the Hobbycraft 1/32 P51A Mustang in a one-off “dazzle” camouflage scheme from 1943/44. It’s a skill building project and not a super detail project, so the focus is on masking, finishing and weathering.
Terry - solid work done on the P-43 and Cavalier. The Cavalier white coat might be good enough to start gloss clear. The P-43 is ready for decals. Wish me luck! Starting cleanup on Moscato’s Dragunn.
***************************************
THINGS WE’VE SEEN
Geoff - visited the RCAF Museum in Trenton, Ontario last week. Not a huge museum, but we’ll done and very good docents with lots of information. If you are modelling a Halifax, they have one fully restored (non flyable).

Also, received the Mitsubishi Babs book.
Stuart - Guillow kits at Goodwill this week, got a Spitfire and a Ruff, got a Spitfire for Geoff

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - A bit of working getting the fuselage closed up on the 1/72 Arma Hurricane and weathering about to being start on a Tomahawk.
Geoff - still plugging away on the Hobbycraft 1/32 P51B Mustang. I finally put some pictures and descriptions of the Moosearoo Cup build onto the podcast Facebook group, as I saw that some others had done so. Great response and I noticed today that even Arma Hobbies - who makes the kit - picked up our post. Nice to see. Otherwise, a lot of my time has been spent on refurbishing a 55 year old wood lathe that I acquired. Let the chips fly!
Terry - Getting some bench time in. Now painting the Dora Wings P-43, looking pretty good. I should get to gloss coating this weekend. The Halberd Models Turbo Cavalier is getting close to paint as well. I’m pretty happy with the primer and am now getting the canopy on. The cockpit received some updating to make it a late 90s or 2000s era chase plane.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Tomahawk progressing, got the base coat and the first pass at camouflage using the Sotar 20/20 airbrush. 1st time I’ve used it in two years so happy with the results.
Geoff - progressed a long way on the Moosearoo Cup entry- Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51A/B! Great kit. This led to a need for a “palette cleanser” so I pulled out the 1/72 LS kit of the BD5 and BD5J - the smallest jet ever built, it was famously flown by James Bond in Octopussy. Finally, the early P51 bug bit again and I’ve been plugging away on a 1/32 Hobbycraft P51A recon version. Nice shape but not as much detail as you might expect for 1/32.
Terry -
A fair amount of work over the past years on the Halberd Models Turbo Cavalier Mustang is now in the primer stage, the Dora Wings P-43 Lancer being painted, and the Zentradi Fleet being dull coated. And I watched Sandman on Netflix. So should you.
Mike - 1/32nd F-18 for Brother in law. Trying some new paints - MCW paints,
Recommends - Lost in Space on Netflix.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart: Yf 19 is done, Starting work on the 1/72 Macross Destroid Tomahawk. Nice kit with logical sub assemblies.
Geoff: plugging away on painting and weathering the Trumpeter 1/32 Corsair, but ran out of XF 17 Sea Blue (it’s a BIG kit!) so I started the Moosearoo Cup kit - Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51B/C Mustang, and what a beauty! I have no illusions about being able to exceed the skills of the other podcasters, so my goal is to not embarrass our team! Most importantly - my drone finally blew out of the tree in a recent storm but less positively, it is completely dead.
Terry: A little lining work on the Garmilon fleet and did get the wings attached to the Turbo Cavalier Mustang. That took some work, and some epoxy putty to make sure the joints will be strong.
Anthony: I’ve been fluttering between several of my stalled out/shelf queen/deep guilt projects - 1/144 Char’s Zaku ll (soon-to-be-done), Yokoyama Hex Bug build with Campus Friends, VF-4 (decals half done), Don VanDuzen’s 1/35 Challenger I tribute build (primed), 1/72 Cat’s Eye Canopies (vac-formed), 1/48 Gabriel (Merdc painting), Lot’s of progress! I did finish a 1/144 GM Sniper Test Type!

THINGS WE’VE SEEN
Terry’s conversion of a (not great) resin VF-11 kit into a QF-11 drone.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Clear coat and decalling done on the YF-19, landing gear was put on last night. Next up is another clear coat in preparation for panel lines and weathering. I also started work on an Arma Hobbies 1/72 Hurricane. Interior green has been painted and cockpit assembly started.
Geoff - I acquired a partially built 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-4 Corsair from the estate of club member Don Van Dusen, who passed last year. He loved Corsairs and was converting this kit to the cannon-armed version. It’s an extensive conversion, and it took me a while to figure out what he was trying to achieve. He was a very good modeller, and my goal is to complete it as he wanted and to his standard as best I can. Lots of resin, scratch-built additions and the like. I am enjoying this exercise, and it’s stretching my skills a bit as well.
[foogallery id="2875"]
Terry - Not a whole lot of progress, summer slows my progress a bit. I did dig out Randy Cooper’s Hammerhead corvette for cleanup and epoxy putty filling etc. It’s a long-term project, and since I was watching Stranger Things 4 at the time, the work proceeded slowly. The Gamillon ships have not proceeded past gloss-coating.
