If like me you have found the terms powernet, power mesh and stretch mesh confusing then this episode for you.
After finally finishing my Willowdale bra this week I thought it would be fun to talk about these fabrics that create the foundations of our lingerie and swimwear but can be used for many more applications.
So this week I wanted to share my thoughts on what the definitions are for each of these fabrics, how they are made that makes them so great and lots of ideas of ways in which you can use them in your dressmaking.
In the blog post for the episode you'll find lots of links and resources to explore these fabrics more.
If you haven't tried them before then I hope this inspires you to give them a go. If you have tried them then I hope it gives you some new ideas on other ways in which you can use them.
As always I'd love to hear your thoughts about these fabrics so please do get in touch!

There is a lot of tips and advice out there about how to care for and sharpen them and so I wanted to explore with you who says what and my thoughts on the pros and cons of each recommendation.

If you have ever wondered which fabrics are guilty of dulling your blades then I'll give you a list to be looking out for.

Support the showFREE Pattern and chance to win Prizes with this week's guest from Maison Fauve (see link below)
I was delighted to finally get chance to talk with the passionate Emilie Faurie of the French pattern and fabric brand, Maison Fauve recently. I've been following her wonderful creations on Instagram and got to try out the beautiful Cicadella Blouse pattern which has some very stylish details that I really enjoyed trying.
Emilie has an unusual career path into creating Maison Fauve which she shares in our chat. Her passion for all things fashion is contagious and she explained to me how she creates her wonderful collections and why she chooses particular themes.
Her vision for Maison Fauve is driven by her passion to help all sewists make clothes that they are proud of, from fabrics that are thoughtfully sourced and creatively crafted into timeless collections.
I loved chatting with her and I know she'll bring a bit of sewing sunshine into your sewing room too!

Support the showWhen we are making clothes for ourselves, the process of creating and fitting those clothes is intimately tied to our bodies. And if there is internal conflict or self-doubt associated with our body then that can impact our enjoyment and success in creating garments that we love.
In this week's episode I wanted to shed light on the importance of fostering a healthy body image, how to go about it if you aren't feeling super positive yet, and the impact it can have on your creativity when you do.
I'm delighted to be joined by Becky Upchurch, a mindset coach passionate about empowering individuals, particularly women, to embrace a positive body image. We delves into the pervasive issue of how body image affects personal creativity and self-expression, especially in the realm of dressmaking.
Becky brings a unique perspective, blending her expertise in mindset coaching with a deep understanding of the challenges that come with body image issues. She highlights how societal pressures, personal insecurities, and the struggle of comparison can negatively influence our perception of our body and, consequently, our creative expression.
You'll learn strategies to combat negative thought patterns and societal pressures related to body image. Becky shares practical tips on setting achievable goals, reframing negative thoughts, and cultivating a more compassionate and accepting view of your body.
And that's not all - she has also created a downloadable guide for you that guides you step by step to uncover unhelpful thoughts and create a simple, easy to apply action plan to start changing how you think and feel about your body. You can find the link to the guide here: https://sewmuchmorefun.co.uk/episode77
I hope you enjoy Becky's tips and guidance as much as I did.

Support the showIt's coming up to the festive season and if you are like me, you might be thinking about sewing with silky festive fabrics. It's also a time when we might want to create outfits with particular design features that give them more of a dressy feel.
I wanted to get some tips for you on how to sew these silky fabrics as they can be tricky to handle and if you've had experience trying to work with them, that might have put you off.
So when I was last talking to Pamela Leggett she mentioned some tips that she has for sewing these fabrics that have been successful for the people that have joined her on her workshops.
I asked her if she would join me to share her tips and experience with these fabrics and we also chatted about using silky fabrics with other patterns in your stash, and personalising patterns to create new design features and combinations.
It's a jam packed episode with great tips and ideas so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did to record it.

Support the showIn this heartwarming episode I wanted to share inspiring stories from the lovely ladies at my local sewing shop which demonstrate the profound impact that sewing communities have on our well-being.
None of this would be possible for them without the positive influence of small business owner Elaine Bell of Sewing B (Belle) in Stapleford near Nottingham.
It's also the time of year for Small Business Saturday, which emphasizes the importance of supporting local and small businesses.
So I wanted to support one of my local small businesses with some engaging interviews and my reflections on the joy of sewing with others, the value of sewing workshops, and the sense of community they foster.

Support the showT-shirts are one of our wardrobe staples and there are 2 billion sold and bought every year. But I still struggle to buy them to fit me and in this episode I’ll share more about that and my 5 reasons why I think you should make your own so stay tuned.
Why are t-shirts so hard to buy?
Because my hips are a couple of sizes bigger than my bust, when I try to buy t-shirts I often find that if they fit at the shoulders, they are too tight, or at least tighter than I would like around my tummy and hips and if I size up so that they fit comfortably across my hips, then they look a bit tent like at the top.
I also like to match my t-shirt to the rest of my outfit, so getting just the right colour can also be a challenge. I think my mum had a skirt in her wardrobe for about a year, trying to find just the right colour t-shirt to go with it so maybe that’s a hereditary trait!
So before I get into my solution for my t-shirt buying problems (and spoiler alert, that’s the 5 great reasons to make one!) I wanted to share some interesting facts that I found out while doing some research for this little chat with you.

Do you hate wasting fabric? Do you find yourself looking for projects that will use up your scraps and create something useful and beautiful? Projects that don't require a lot of preparation or headspace, but are still fun to make?
I really hate wasting fabric but it can be quite difficult to find sewing projects that I will actually make use of and don't require my scraps to be too co-ordinated. I'm not a quilter and so am often on the look out for practical ideas that will help me minimise the off cuts that I have to throw away.
As I get older I am also becoming more conscious of my impact on our beautiful planet. I am more aware of my use of 'single use' items and whenever I spot ideas on how I can minimise those I am always excited.
So I was delighted when I heard about Jen Rich's new book - Stitch, Sewing projects for the modern maker and was keen to chat with her to find out more.

Support the showHave you ever wanted to take time out from a dressmaking project or sewing in general but felt like you can’t or felt too guilty to do so? Well that happened to me too recently with quite significant consequences so in today’s episode I wanted to share the value of taking time out and how to come back more energised after your break.
A quick thank you to Justin & Diana at Raspberry Creek fabrics - https://raspberrycreekfabrics.com - for their patience while I was taking time out.

Support the showIf I ask you do you fancy making your own coat, what thoughts go through your head? I remember the first time someone suggested that to me and it was way out of my comfort zone.
So what about you? Are you thinking - it's easy Jacqui I've already done it - if so, then kudos to you. Or are you thinking - I'd love to do that but it seems way too difficult? Whether you have already made a coat or if it's one of those projects you keep putting off until you are better at sewing then I'm hoping that today's episode is going to dispell any fears and motivate you to give it a try.
Like with all garments there are different types of coats and some are definitely more complicated or involved than others. So today I want to talk about a pattern for an unlined coat that I actually made a couple of years ago but that I think can be a great starting point for anyone wanting to have a go without it being overly difficult.
The last coat I bought was one that I happened to stumble on when not really looking for a coat in TKMax. I'm not a big shopper and I find clothes shopping a real challenge.
So that's why I ended up biting the bullet and making my own.
There's lots of great benefits to making your own coats and there is a growing range of great coat patterns out there to choose from.
So the pattern I want to talk to you about today is a Butterick pattern from their Lisette range. It's the B6244 and the name on the pattern is draped collar coat and dress.
In this episode I share my experience making this coat, some tips if you want to get started and some things I'll change from the lessons I learnt from this make.

Support the showAs promised for season 2 we have a number of BONUS episodes with expert guests.
Do you ever find that when you try to buy clothes that they often fit one part of your body but not others? For example if buying trousers or jeans, you can get them to fit your hips but they are too tight or loose on the waist and too tight or loose on the thighs.
Or if you are trying to buy dresses, if you get the size to fit your bust it's too big on the shoulders or drowns your bottom half, but if you try the size on to fit your waist and hips, it's too tight across the bust?
You may have had the same experiences when making your own clothes and using the standard pattern sizing. And if you have tried to use the same size that you would buy from the shop, you may have found that it makes up to be a completely different size to what you were expecting.
Advice from the expert Elise Chase-Sinclair
I recently spoke to fitting and alterations expert Elise Chase-Sinclair about these problems. You can also listen to our chat in this bonus podcast episode.
Elise has made and altered clothes for actors, dancers, and opera singers and just regular people. She also worked as a garment technician where she's analyzed how garments fit on different bodies.
Through her work experience she's become an expert at what alteration and pattern drafting techniques get the best fit for different bodies.
Her mission is to help people feel good in their clothes by teaching them how to make their clothes fit their bodies, and not the other way around. Something that I'm definitely very passionate about as well.
In this episode Elise gives her top tips on making alterations for your unique body shape.
Whether you have bought or made your clothes, if you they don't fit your unique proportions then they can feel uncomfortable and unflattering. When we are self-conscious about what we are wearing that can impact how we feel and how we interact with others.

Hello my lovelies and thanks for joining me for this week's episode. As the weather turns a bit colder I thought it might be good to talk about sewing with thicker fabrics so today I have 10 tips for you plus a couple of bonus tips on working with these sometimes trickier fabrics. First I'd like to just cover a couple of things I wanted to remember to share with you.
Episode webpage: https://sewmuchmorefun.co.uk/post/episode52
It is approaching winter here in the UK and whilst it has been quite a mild autumn the colder nights are just around the corner.
We are also experiencing unprecedented fuel costs and so warm clothes and layers will definitely be a feature of my winter wardrobe.
But making warm clothes can often involve sewing thicker fabrics and I know that many people are put off by the thought of having to wrestle layers of thicker fabrics through their sewing machine. And if you have tried it in the past and had a bad experience it can put you off trying it again.
So today I wanted to talk through 10 top tips that you can use to have confidence making everything from warm jumpers to snuggly coats. I have also included a couple of bonus tips that came to me as I was prepping for this chat.
I don't want you to be left shivering as the cold weather sets in and I also don't want you to to have to say no to a fabric or pattern because you are worried about sewing thicker fabrics.
So these tips are simple ways to have fun making toasty treats to wear in winter and get a finish that you can be proud of.
I hope you find them useful and you can download a pdf copy from the episode web page. https://sewmuchmorefun.co.uk/post/episode52
If you haven't tried sewing with thicker fabrics I hope this inspires you to give it a go - if you have and have any experiences you want to share then please let me know. I always love to hear your thoughts and what you are working on or planning so do get in touch.

If you have struggled to find the perfect garment to help you transition from the warm weather to the cooler temperatures then look no further.
The trusty Duster Jacket also known as a long cardigan is the perfect make and the pattern I'm reviewing in this episode is a great for beginner dressmakers and experienced sewists alike.
The Simplicity 8557 pattern includes 5 garments and is definitely in the easy to sew category.
In this episode I give you some tips on sewing stretch fabrics if this is your first time making a stretch garment. I also talk through the versions I have made, my mistakes and tips to help you have a go.

When you hear the long list of different clothes that Melanie Keane has made it's hard to believe that she only started sewing when the UK Prime Minister announced the lockdown in 2020.
When I was planning for Season 2 of the Sew Mindful podcast I asked the Sew Much More Fun facebook group what topics they would like to hear about. Mel responded and said that it would be good to talk about the challenges of buying fabric as she had had some bad experiences and learnt a lot from them.
I was intrigued to hear about Mel's experiences and thought you might be too. So I was delighted that when I asked if she would be a guest on the podcast to share her thoughts, she agreed.
We ended up covering a lot more than just buying fabrics in our chat and I had such fun learning more about Mel and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

In this first interview of season 2 I'm delighted to be talking to Mel Forrest of Mint Button Sewing School.
Mel was a primary school teacher for 15 years before leaving to pursue a 'portfolio career' in the home-sewing industry. She now teaches 1:1 sewing lessons and workshops.
She also works part time as a retail assistant in a fabric shop - Home Town, Rochester. And if that wasn't enough you may also come into contact with her as a customer service assistant for the online sewing pattern shop, The Foldline.
I found out about Mel through a blog post she wrote about an experiment she challenged herself to complete. After watching The Great British Sewing Bee and being shocked by the time allowed for one of the sewing tasks, Mel decided to try it for herself and see how long it would take her to complete.

So this episode is a quick introduction to what to expect from the new season. It also includes a special offer for 20% off from the wonderful Erica Schmitz of MybodyModel so be sure to listen out for that.

I'm so excited to share this week's episode with you as it is one of the topics that I have personally struggled with (and continue to work on) and that is understanding how to combine colours to create outfits that feel amazing.
So when I want to learn more about anything style related I turn to the fabulous style gurus that have joined me on the podcast and this week it is a delight to welcome back Imogen Lamport of Inside Out Style.
Imogen was the first person to introduce me to the concept of picking colours and fabrics that mirrored my facial features such as hair, skin, eyes and lips, picking up the properties of those features such as colour and texture.
When I recently discovered the impact of value and colour contrast I knew I had to share it with you as it is such a simple yet powerful way of designing and planning what you make to have maximum impact.
In this episode you will hear:
> What Value and Colour Contrast are
> Why some colours and colour combinations work for you and why some don't
> How to discover your own level of value contrast
> How to create outfits that reflect and match your value contrast
> How Disney princesses can help us understand colour contrast and how to identify your optimum colour contrast
> How to combine colours and neutrals to perfectly suit you
> How to use colour and value contrast to pick the best patterned fabrics for your makes

Hello! Thank you for joining me for another Sew Mindful chat. This week is another Fabric Focus. The last one we did was with the lovely Harriet Kjellman when we talked about Denim. If you haven't listened to Episode 35 then be sure to go back and check that out.
So in this Fabric Focus session I have chosen a fabric that seems to divide opinion - Bengaline. It is a fabric that I discovered quite late on in my sewing journey and it was not at all what I expected. And it did take a while to grow on me.
You didn't really see much of it around until fairly recently and now it is quite common to see it on the high street used in ready to wear trousers, capri pants, dresses and skirts.
It has some great properties but there are some characteristics about it that are not to everyone's taste.
In this episode you will hear:
> the history of Bengaline
> the defining features of Bengaline as a dressmaking fabric
> the types of garment you can use it for
> where to find patterns that are designed for use with Bengaline
> how to work with Bengaline and what you need to be aware of
> why some people aren't so keen on this fabric

Welcome and thank you so much for tuning in for this episode. This week I want to tackle a topic that I noticed myself struggling with and that is getting stuck in student mode, faffing and procrastinating. That was until I discovered the Power of Practice!
Do you suffer from any of these? Do you watch hours of youtube videos, or attend lots of courses, or maybe start but don't finish lots of projects?
Well that was me. I found myself doing all of these and not actually feeling like I was making progress. In fact I felt the opposite - overwhelmed by all the new information and guilty for never seeming to finish anything.
So in this episode you will hear:
> how lessons from the film The Matrix helped me break my cycle of procrastination
> how you can spot the signs of being stuck in this mode
> why watching the video or reading the book isn't enough
> the power of putting into practice
> 10 steps to take effective action, stop the faff and ditch the guilt

A short and sweet episode for you this week. Inspired by my love of the Great British Sewing Bee I wanted to talk a little bit about upcycling and recycling.
We are very lucky in the UK to have access to a wide variety of different fabrics and I do love to create garments from new fabrics but it hasn’t always been this way and from necessity comes creativity. During World War 2 for example the Make Do and Mend campaign encouraged house wives to create garments from curtains, parachutes and even their husbands clothes.
But now there is a new nuance added to the equation - the environment. We are becoming more aware of the impact waste and we each have a role to play in trying to ensure that we minimise our contribution to landfill.
So learning to upcycle and consciously recycle is a fantastic way to do our bit.
In this episode you will hear:
> A few reasons why you should consider upcycling
> Some different approaches to getting started upcycling
> Some inspiration from the recent Reduce, Re-use and Recycle episode of the Great British Sewing Bee and how you can try it too!

I can't believe we are at Episode 40 already! Thank you so much for listening and supporting the show. This week I am joined again by my very first guest on the podcast, the wonderful Imogen Lamport.
If you haven't listened to the previous episodes with Imogen and you at all interested in anything related to style then I highly recommend going back and picking those up (episodes 2, 8 and 14).

I have been on a personal journey to learn about my own style preferences but feel like it is still a work in progress so in this episode Imogen gives her take on how to start to reconnect with your style if like me you feel a bit lost.
In this episode you will hear:

> How to change your perception of your style
> Tips on how to have fun with the clothes you already have

This week is all about underwear and I wanted to talk about making your own knickers. I put off making my own underwear for a long time because I thought it was really difficult. Then I saw some fabulous knicker-making kits advertised by Flo-Jo Fabrics. All the hardwork of choosing what fabrics and which elastics was done for me and I decided to take the plunge and give it a go.
I made my first two pairs of knickers - one from non-stretch cotton fabric with elastic around legs and waist and the other from jersey fabric with stretch lace around the legs and waist.
The kits included the patterns and instructions and it couldn't have been simpler. I was able to make them with my sewing machine and I loved them. So when I thought about talking about making knickers I figured who better to talk to than where it started for me and the fabulous Delia of Flo-Jo was so much fun to explore this topic with!
My thoughts about this episode were also triggered by a fabulous photo in the Flo-Jo Fabrics newsletter of Delia and Erika in Wonder Woman swimsuits raising money for a good cause. If you buy one of their knicker making kits then they are donating £1 to Womankind for each kit sold. So please do check those out as they are great fun to make and you get to support a fabulous cause too!
In this episode you will hear:
> Who Flo-Jo Fabrics are and what they do
> How the knicker making kits came to be
> The benefits of making your own knickers
> The different types of knickers available in the kits
> Different ways to adapt the pattern to create the perfect style for you
> Tips on taking the leap and getting started

Thank you so much for tuning in to this week's episode. For many years after I learned how to sew and make clothes I religiously followed patterns. Whilst I was making them my own by choosing my fabrics I wouldn't have thought of myself as creative.
When I started learning about pattern drafting and later, fashion design I realised that we are all creative but we just don't always know how to recognise and nurture our creativity. I wanted to find a guest that could explain how we can connect with our creativity and that led me to the talented Clara Nartey.
Clara is an artist, an entrepreneur and a coach. She creates the most magnificent and colourful textile artworks and through her teaching and coaching shares her own process with others to help them share their creativity with the world.
In this episode you will hear:
> Clara's background and how she reached where she is today
> How she raised the money for her first sewing machine
> Her approach to learning how to quilt
> How she became such a successful textile artist
> Her tips on developing your own creativity
> Where many people go wrong in their creative process and how to avoid it
> The two types of creative mindset and how to use them to your advantage
> The next steps you can take to boost your own creativity
It was a delight to talk to Clara and I learned so much from our chat plus we got to laugh a lot too! I really hope you enjoy this episode and if you want more colour in your life be sure to follow Clara on Instagram.

Welcome to this week's Sew Mindful podcast episode with one of my favourite titles to date. I can't take credit for it as it was the work of my wonderful guest this week - Harriet Kjellman.
Harriet is a woman of many talents including lecturing in fashion at Wolverhampton University, running her own fashion label and consulting and teaching in fashion and fashion processes and product development.
Harriet has a long history with denim and uses it extensively in her designs which is why when I think of this wonderful fabric, I think of her. She referred to denim as 'the Switzerland of fabrics' because it is so neutral in that it transcends barriers and boundaries across so many walks of life, not taking sides, accessible to one and all.
In this episode you will hear:
> Who Harriet is and her history and connection to denim
> Her take on the symbolism of denim
> Why denim is so versatile
> What makes denim unique
> Some of the challenges in working with denim and tips to overcome them
> Seam and stitching techniques to use with denim and how to spot high-end garments
> Tricks for topstitching on denim
> The ethos and features of Harriet's denim design collection
> What to look for when buying denim
I thoroughly enjoyed Harriet's take on denim and the reasons for using and wearing it and I hope that you get some tips, ideas and inspiration from this episode.

Hello, welcome and thank you for joining me! I wanted to just do a quick intro to this episode to explain a bit about what to expect and how this week's topic relates to dressmaking (as it may not be apparent when you first start listening!)
One of the considerations when I am making garments is the fabric and each fabric has colours and properties associated with it. We can choose colours based purely on aesthetics for example which colours work well together but there are schools of thought around colours being so much more.
This interview explores one of those schools of thought around energy and chakras and their relationship to colour and the reason I wanted to share it with you is that I have found it so interesting and stimulating to incorporate different perspectives into my life and I wanted to give you the chance to do the same.
It follows on from episode 29 where my fabulous guest Sue Ricks and I talked about the Pantone Colour of the Year and some of the meanings and associations of yellow.
In this episode initially we recap about what chakras are and in particular the base chakra, how that relates to our bodies and emotions and how the colour red relates to it.
Then we go on to talk about how you can use the colour red to boost any those physical and emotional areas where you may feel you need a boost.
It could be that after hearing it you decide it’s not for you. You could also decide that you will add it into your tools and considerations to help you create your fabulous garments. The choice is totally yours but I hope you find it interesting.

Have you ever struggled to find just the right pattern for the garment or style you want to make? Have you ever thought I wish I could make my own patterns - surely it can't be that difficult?
Well in this episode I explore my thoughts and experiences with pattern drafting. When I first learned pattern drafting it deepened my love of dressmaking but also brought with it a fair amount of subsquent frustrations.
So I want to share with you my warts and all assessment of the pros and cons of pattern drafting, how and when I have used it and some insights as to what it involves.
In this episode you will hear:
> What is pattern drafting?
> What tools do you need to get started?
> What is the process involved with pattern drafting including some aspects you may not have considered
> The pros and cons of making your own patterns
> How to use pattern drafting and commercial patterns together
> Some ways to get started and find out more

Hello and welcome to this episode of the Sew Mindful podcast and thank you so much for joining me.
This week I wanted to focus on one of my favourite fabrics to work with and that is Jersey. I wanted to do a bit of research and share with you some background to the different types of fibres that Jersey fabrics can be made from and the very different properties that each one has.
I have been teaching my sister to sew her first stretch garment and so I have been sharing some of my tips and experiences to help her get started and thought that you might want to share those too.
In this episode you will hear:
> a short history of how Jersey came to be
> the many different fibres that Jersey can be made from and how those fibres affect the properties of the fabric
> the types of garments you can make from Jersey
> my top tips for preparing to work with your Jersey fabric
> my sewing tips for constructing garments from this beautifully versatile fabric

Pantone started as a graphics standards system for designers to provide a way to standardise how we define and refer to colours. It has become so influential that it is now a primary influencer in the colour trends followed by the fashion industry.
In 2000 the Pantone Color Institute set up the Pantone Color of the Year. It has evolved into a significant trendsetting tool and now takes 9 months of research to select. Pantone describe the colour of the year as "...a color snapsho of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude."
My fascination with colour began when I trained as a Reflexologist and started to learn about energy and chakras and their relationship with colour. So I wanted to explore the combination of the selection of Illuminating Yellow as the Pantone 2021 Color of the Year and what that represents energetically to understand how I can use that to my advantage in my designs and makes for 2021.
To many this combination of topics may seem a bit woo woo but if you are open to gaining new perspectives on seemingly ordinary things then I think you will find my chat with my good friend and energy expert, Sue Ricks intriguing.
In this episode you will hear:
> How Sue began working with colour and energy
> What chakras are and how the colour yellow relates to them
> Ways to incorporate yellow into your life
> What types of energetic and emotional issues yellow may help to address
> What our connection to different colours can tell us
> How to experiment and bring colour into your life

In this week's episode Claire Hutchinson returns to continue our chat about her fabric stash. Claire first joined me in Episode 24 to share her process for picking and making garments and as we spoke it was clear that Claire loves to buy fabric.
I wanted to find out how to become more confident in buying fabric when in shops and so in this episode Claire shares the details of her process of picking and buying fabrics.
If you have struggled to find fabrics you love then Claire has some great advice for you. There were so many tips that I've split our chat into two parts.
In this episode you will hear:
> how Claire prepares for her fabric shopping,
> how she narrows down her choices when in the fabric store,
> how she feels about plain vs patterned fabrics,
> what colour palette she uses,
> which fabrics she tries to avoid and why,

One of the most often asked questions when people are learning to make their own clothes is which is the best sewing machine to buy. Choosing a sewing machine can seem really daunting as there are so many to choose from so in this episode I talk about the key things I look for when choosing a sewing machine.
I explain how the machines I have bought in the past have evolved in features and price as my sewing has become more advanced and more frequent.
In this episode you will hear:
> What to do before you start to buy a sewing machine
> Pricing bands for different levels of sewing machine and what to expect for your budget
> Types of features to expect at each level of machine

Support the showI love sewing but it can be easy to feel defeated if your project doesn't turn out as planned. There can be lots of reasons why sewing failures can happen but because you have often invested time and money into it the frustration can feel magnified when it happens.
In this episode I talk about some of my 'failures' and the reason I have used quote marks is because I have found ways to reframe these projects and see them with new eyes. I want to share with you some of the ways that I have found to help me enjoy my sewing more and end up with more garments that I really love.
So if you have felt so frustrated with a sewing project (or any project) that it has made you think of giving it up altogether then these tips might change how you see that experience and give you some pointers on how to prevent that happening in the future.
In this episode you will hear:
> why sewing fails seem to hurt so much
> details of some of my own favourite sewing fails
> some of the reasons why sewing projects fail
> how to prevent different types of sewing failures from happening
> a little pep talk to keep you on track at times of frustration :)

I love talking to other makers about their makes and the processes they follow to express their creativity so I wanted to share with you some of the wonderful people I have met through sewing.
I met Claire Hutchinson on a Pattern Drafting course at The School of Sewing in Ashby, UK. I loved her enthusiasm and passion for all things dressmaking and followed her progress via her projects on Instagram.
Over the years she has dedicated a lot of time to honing her dressmaking skills, learning new techniques and practicing and applying her skills in a wide variety of dressmaking projects.
In this episode we talk about Claire's approach to starting new projects and how she finds her inspiration and follows that through to her finished makes. It is almost the opposite to my own process which I found fascinating and I am sure you will too.
In this episode you will hear
> how Claire got started making clothes
> how her ambition initially out-stripped her ability but didn't dampen her enthusiasm
> how her fabric stash kicks off her creative process and all the steps she follows
> some of her memorable 'failures' and the lessons they delivered

Support the showJanuary is my favourite month for planning and so I wanted to share the steps that I used to plan my next mini collection that I will be making to kick off this year. Now the phrase ‘mini collection’ sounds a lot more glamorous than it really is but after years of making individual garments that didn’t really go with anything in my wardrobe or that I ended up not being able to wear very often I decided I needed a better plan.
So I am going to share with you how I created my last two collections of clothes that I absolutely love and get much more regular wear from. So if you are struggling to plan or decide what to make or even how to fill the gaps that you might have in your wardrobe then tune in to find out more.
In this episode you will hear:
> How to find out what might be getting in the way of your planning

So my guest for this episode is the queen of all things colour and style, Lisa Newport of Lisa Newport Style. She is the founder of the 4 step Drab to Fab System which she developed drawing on her skills and experience in textiles, fashion design and her first love, make up.

My guest for this episode is the fabulous Rebecca Weef Smith. For a long time I have realised that what I wear can have an impact on how I'm feeling but I've never really considered the deeper reasons why or thought about how I can use that to my advantage.
Rebecca had that sense too but she wanted to know more so decided on this as a topic for her Positive Psychology Master's at the University of East London.
Having been influenced by fashion all her life it was a subject that she was very personally connected to and so undertook to find out more about how clothes make us feel.
In this episode you will hear:
> Rebecca's journey that lead up to her Masters;
> The outcome of her research ;
> How we can consciously use our clothes to influence our mood;
> The 'secret' messages we and those around us are conveying with our outfits;

A huge thank you for tuning in for episode 18! This week's episode is short and sweet but for me it has been super powerful - uncovering the hidden/subconscious beliefs that hold us back
Over the last few weeks I've been paying real attention to what happens in my mind when I find myself avoiding tasks or activities.
I believe that we are all master manifesters but it seems that sometimes even despite our best intentions we can't seem to move forward with particular projects.
After talking to a friend who said she was struggling in a similar way we decided to pay closer attention to see if we could understand what was going on.
In this episode I explain what we discovered and how helpful that has been for me in terms of recognising how and when I might be self-sabbotaging and what I can do to change my behaviour.

Support the showI am a huge fan of this week’s guest - the brilliant Erica Schmitz.
Erica is an obsessed garment sewist who founded MyBodyModel, a website that makes customized fashion drawing templates (also know as croquis) based on your measurements.
It all started because she wanted to draw her sewing ideas, and was frustrated that she couldn’t find any fashion illustration templates that looked like her. She began development of MyBodyModel in 2017 with crowdfunding support from 725 backers (nearly all women!) who believed in MyBodyModel’s mission of body-positive design.
Through MyBodyModel, Erica is committed to increasing visibility and appreciation of our wonderful diversity of body shapes. She wants to help women have more fun and confidence in dressing our bodies in a way that expresses our own uniqueness and personal style - rather than trying to conform to some outdated social construct of what our bodies “should” look like.
Starting to use MyBodyModel helped me to understand so much more about what designs worked well for me and my shape after wasting years designing and making clothes that would only really suit someone with disproportionately long legs LOL!
We talk about common misconceptions that we have about our bodies and how to start to celebrate your own style. If you ever needed any excuse to re-live the fun of playing with paper dolls then this episode is for you.

Support the showThis week’s topic is one that I get asked about a lot and that is how to do your own clothing alterations.
When people think about making their own clothes it’s natural to think that it is easiest to start by modifying something you already have rather than making from scratch. But in reality having to take apart and remake a garment can be more challenging that just making it from scratch.
So in this episode I’m giving you some tips as to the type of alterations that are easiest to take on for beginners and those that might need more experience. We talk about what you need to know before you start doing your alterations and the many benefits of learning how to tackle some alteration projects yourself.
I also give you my 7 step process to alterations to ensure that you end up with a professional finish.

Sounds melodramatic right? Woman saves world by making her own clothes. Surely dressmaking is just a hobby? But what if the impact of learning to make clothes was not only to produce outfits that fit, flatter and look fabulous but could also save the environment and improve your wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around you? Wouldn't that be amazing!
“I feel like we understand what plastic does to the Earth, but I had no idea what cotton was capable of” – Stacey Dooley
Well in this episode I explore how learning this great skill can do just that. I share some scary stats about the fashion industry's impact on both the environment and the people that work in it. I explore the perceived value of the skills of dressmaking and roles dominated by women in the workplace and the changes to our lifestyle that have disconnected us from our creativity and our connection to those around us.
And the answer to all the world's woes? Spoiler alert!
Yes you guessed it - learning to make your own clothes!

Welcome to Episode 3 of the Sew Mindful podcast where we are exploring building a better connection with your body.
As you may know I love to sew but there are times when I seem to procrastinate or avoid it. I began to pay attention to what was going on when I had dressmaking avoidance and realised that a big part of it seemed to be related to how I was feeling about my body. If I’d gained weight or hadn’t been exercising and the lumps and bumps were starting to grow then I found I was much less enthusiastic to spend time making outfits even though they were garments I really wanted to get finished.
Part of dressmaking is that you need to try things on and look in the mirror and I realised that if you aren’t happy with how you look then it can taint how you feel about what you are making.
So when I decided to start the Sew Mindful podcast this was on my list of topics that I wanted to get answers to. So I looked for experts I could talk to about ways in which I could reframe my connection and perception of my body on the occasions when I’m not feeling in love with it.
That’s how I came across Jenny Kotlyar. Jenny runs a program called ‘Limitless Hiker’ where she helps women prepare, plan and complete hiking adventures pushing their minds and bodies to new levels of success.
In this interview Jenny talks about how getting out and doing something physically challenging can give you a new perspective about your body and help you put an end to the nit-picking.
So this episode is not really about dressmaking per se but it does address some of the mindset barriers that might get in the way of dressmaking and tips on how you can start to change those if you want to.
It does also have lots of ‘kicks up the butt’ from Jenny about choosing to change our focus from the what-ifs to taking small actions to reach big goals.
She also shares her early experiences with hiking that turned out to be quite treacherous but I love that she wasn’t deterred. She learned from her mistakes, kept going and now she is coaching others.
To summarise some of the great tips from the interview I've created the following cheatsheets for you.

I hope you enjoyed this episode. In the next episode I'll be speaking to the fabulous Maria Bello of Maria Bello Styling about how to detox your wardrobe and make space for your new creations so be sure to subscribe/follow so you don't miss it.
In this episode I am talking to the fabulous Imogen Lamport of Inside Out Style.
Imogen is based in Melbourne Australia and her blog and website for Inside Out Style has become regarded as the Encyclopaedia of Image Consulting.
She is an innovator and leader in the style industry and created the Absolute Colour System of 18 tonal colour directions that is now used by consultants around the world.
She is also a certified Psychological Type Practictioner and co-creator of the 16 Style Types which bring together the relationship of how your personality influences your personal style using your psychological type.
She has written and published 4 books The Finishing Touch: perfecting the art of accessorizing, Never Short on Style: dressing and finessing the petite frame, Travelling Light: learn the art of packing light and co-authored the book Svelte in Style: How to Look and Feel Great While Losing Weight‘
She has also been interviewed widely including being featured in Tatler magazine.
Over many years she has created a wealth of resources on her website as well as working directly with clients on all things style and I was drawn to her because a lot of the knowledge I picked up initially from her website seemed to tackle the topic of style from angles I hadn’t seen before.
One of the topics that is in the forefront of dressmaker’s minds is that of choosing fabrics. It can be daunting for beginners but even seasoned sewers can find it challenging to know which fabrics to choose. The fabric is such a key component to the success of the finished item that I am always keen to discover any tips and tricks that will help me narrow down the huge array of fabrics out there.
In this episode Imogen talks through the value of reflecting and repeating attributes of your own body features in the fabrics we choose and how this can ensure that the garment you create is in harmony with you and as a result looks fabulous.
She explains a wide range of different aspects including how we can use the colour tone and texture of our hair and skin to pick fabrics that will really show off our best features. And if you want to wear more boucle then maybe ditch that wrinkle cream.
