This week in Open to Debate a sex worker rights advocate and a human rights attorney have a passionate and vigorous debate about these laws, with the common goal of figuring out what’s best for sex workers. Arguing “yes” it is ok to pay for sex, is Kaytlin Bailey, who is the founder and executive director of a nonprofit organization that seeks to change how society views sex workers. Arguing “no” is Yasmin Vafa, who has advocated on the federal and international level for protecting women and other vulnerable populations as the founder and executive director of Rights4Girls. She is also on several national task forces that help educate policymakers on preventing sex trafficking and violence.
In this episode of The Oldest Profession Podcast, host Kaytlin Bailey celebrates the life of Pamela Churchill Harriman, a remarkable woman whose journey kept her at the forefront of history through the 20th century. Born in 1920, Pamela came of age on the cusp of WWII, marrying Randolph Churchill days before Hitler began bombing London.
After divorcing the prime minister's son she embarked on a career as prominent socialite and companion of the rich and powerful in the high society of Milan, New York and Paris. Pamela's charisma and wit opened doors to powerful circles. However, it was resilience, political acumen, and fundraising ability that truly defined her legacy.
In 1990 Bill Clinton asked her to serve as the United States Ambassador to France, which she proudly did. Pamela Churchill Harriman is an iconic figure worthy of exploration in this captivating episode.

In this episode of The Oldest Profession Podcast, host Kaytlin Bailey explores the significance of December 17th, which is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This day has been observed by sex worker advocates and allies worldwide since December 17, 2003. Originally conceived as a memorial for the victims of the Green River serial killer in Seattle, this event reignited the sex worker rights movement and has kept the movement alive for the last twenty years.
In this episode, Kaytlin Bailey highlights the challenges faced by the sex worker rights movement in the 1990s and early 2000s, including violence, an increase in law and order policing, and the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. She pays tribute to Annie Sprinkle, an accomplished performance artist and sex worker rights advocate and Robin Few, one of the founders of SWOP USA, who both played a pivotal role in organizing the first International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.
This annual ritual hosted around the world on December 17th allows sex workers and their allies to gather, share their stories, and commemorate those who have lost their lives to violence. These events serve as a powerful reminder that sex workers are real people and deserve dignity, respect, and safety. We at Old Pros encourage listeners to attend or host a December 17th event to support the sex worker rights movement and create awareness about the violence faced by sex workers worldwide.

In this episode of The Oldest Profession Podcast, hosted by Kaytlin Bailey, we go on a journey to uncover the history and lasting legacy of the Mann Act, also known as the White Slave Law. Enacted in 1910, the Mann Act made it illegal to transport women across state lines for “immoral purposes.” Sold to the American people as a way of combating “white slavery” the Mann Act was broadly interpreted to include extra marital affairs, consensual interracial relationships in addition to adult sex workers.
We explore the impact of the Mann Act on Americans and its ongoing legacy on sex workers and other marginalized communities. Your host, Kaytlin Bailey, unpacks the law's controversial history and the ways in which it has been used to perpetuate oppression.

At a time where full service sex workers in Seattle euphemistically called themselves seamstresses, Madam Lou Graham was so rich that she served as an alternative to banks, giving loans to business propositions deemed too risky by bankers. She was also largely responsible for the funding of Seattle's school system.
At the height of her power, Graham got arrested by a rookie cop who clearly did not know who he was dealing with. She was so influential that she was cleared of all charges AND had the police commissioner fired.
The most famous sex worker of today's music industry, Cardi B unabashedly flaunts and celebrates her past as a stripper in her songs, music videos, and social media.
Best known for is commercial paintings of the moulin rouge, French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was also a john who (literally) lived in brothels.
As a tenant and client, Toulouse-Lautrec created compelling portraits of the full service sex workers with whom he socialized. His empathetic gaze captured the elements of their lives often missed by more sensationalist or romanticized depictions of sex work by other artists of his time.
In 1949, Marilyn Monroe, struggling to make ends meet as an actress, got paid 50$ to pose nude for a calendar. She worked as a pinup and, some say, as a prostitute before becoming an internationally recognized sex symbol & box office sensation.
Her vibrant, sensuous charisma, her comedic genius and witty flair deeply resonates with old pros and civilians alike- over fifty years after her death, we're still obsessed with her.
This Mesoamerican Goddess was the deity of vice, filth, purification, steam baths, lust, fertility, adulterers and, you guessed it, sex workers.
She symbolically castrated priests in elaborate rituals, and provoked and pardoned her followers' sin in a never ending circle of life, sex and death.
Infamous misandrist martyr and queer icon Aileen Wuornos killed seven men while working as a hitch hiking sex worker in Florida.
To say that her life was defined by hardship would be an understatement. She started exchanging sex for resources at 11, was kicked out of her family house at 15. At 35, after killing a number of johns, one of whom a convicted rapist Wuornos shot in self-defence, she was betrayed by her lover who collaborated with the cops in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
Her trial was heavily covered by the media, who feasted on her case because of what they perceived as Wuornos' titillating identity as both a queer sex worker and a survivor of sexual assault. Her last words one camera were: "Thanks a lot, society, for railroading my ass."
After spending years on death row, she was executed at the age of 56.
In this new special segment, Kaytlin responds to the alarming but predictable trend of single women traveling alone being targeted by companies who are spending millions to train their staff to spot 'trafficking victims'. Surprise surprise: the training doesn't actually help trafficking victims, but rather targets old pros. Kaytlin also addresses the recent wave of arrests on seeking.com.
This week we're doing something a little different- we compiled heartbreaking and heartwarming coming out stories from Coyote Fawn, Allie Oops, and many more.
Segilola Eleyinju Ege was an immensely popular Nigerian prostitute who wrote what is considered by many to be the first Yoruba novel,"The Life History of Me Segilola Endowed with Fascinating Eyes, the Sweetheart of a Thousand and One Men". Between 1929 & 1930, Segilola published tales from her exciting life as a monthly column in the Lagos Herald.
This is part one of a two part series based on Saheed Aderinto's scholarly book, "When Sex Threatened The State; Illicit Sexuality, Nationalism, and Politics in Colonial Nigeria 1900-1958".
Six years before writing and starring in Rocky, Sylvester Stallone was the lead in a soft core porn film originally titled 'Party at Kitty and Stud's', which was re-released and renamed 'The Italian Stallion' after Stallone became famous.
Bettie Page, one of the most iconic pin-ups and bondage models of the twentieth century, had an on-and-off again relationship with evangelical christianity. While her involvement with the church led her to become 'reformed', she never repented her nude modeling days, believing that that since Adam and Eve were created naked in the Garden of Eden, then God probably didn't have too much of an issue with nudity.
This week begins a series on "reformed whores," people who publicly campaigned to prevent others from entering the sex trade. Kaytlin breaks down the context that brought together two powerhouse icons of the "porn wars." Feminist intellectual Andrea Dworkin and Linda Lovelace who starred in the 1972 blockbuster success that thrust porn into the mainstream, Deep Throat.
Kaytlin talks about losing the NY12 Democratic Primary and next steps in the fight for sex worker rights. She talks about substituting "the electorate" for her parents approval and chasing numbers to feel alive.
She also talks about the "end" of #SurvivorsAgainstSESTA and asks her listeners to get in this fight if they aren't already. Shout out to Survived and Punished, SWOP Behind Bars, Support (Ho)se, Democratic Socialists of America, GLITS & all the old pros who wrote letters to voters-we made a difference.
Kaytlin and "whore of all trades" and activist Tai dive into the life of bisexual legend Julie D'Aubigny, who fought, fucked & sang her way through 17th century France. An expert fencer and opera signer, D'Aubigny seduced aristocratic men and women, did some grave robbing, and burned a nunnery.
Jacq the Stripper joins Kaytlin Bailey to talk about American icon, Gypsy Rose Lee. Gypsy was born into a multi generational family of scrappy independent women. After realizing she couldn't support the family as a vaudeville performer, Lee turned to the more lucrative craft of burlesque, which she transformed with her wit and wisdom.
Like Jacq, Gypsy was a brilliant stand up comic & author in addition to being an accomplished strip tease performer. And like Kaytlin, she eventually was drawn toward leftie political activism. Jacq & Kaytlin also talk stage moms, madness, and the importance of laughing at yourself first.
You can find Jacq's art on her website, http://www.jacqthestripper.com/
June 2nd is International Whores Day, so fly your thong flag high and listen to Kaytlin Bailey & Ceyenne Doroshow dish on the french whores who helped inspire the sex worker rights movement. On June 2nd, 1975 over 100 sex workers occupied the Church of Saint-Nizier in Lyon, France. They hung a banner which read "Our children do not want their mother's in jail." They sparked an international conversation about sex worker rights that continues today.
Best known for attempting to shoot Andy Warhol, Valerie Solanas’ SCUM manifesto became a rallying cry for a generation of feminist thinkers. Valerie was a vagrant working as a panhandler, prostitute and provocateur. From this position of presumed powerlessness Valerie sees through the thin veil of civility to call bullshit on patriarchal power. The ladies admire this old pro with nothing to lose and no fucks to give.
Wendi is moving on to bigger and better things but Ceyenne Doroshow (@ceyennedoroshow) joins Kaytlin Bailey (@kaytlinbailey) in this week’s episode about addiction, desperation, and radical feminism. After deconstructing their attraction to addicts both women take a deep dive into the life and work of unrepentant hustler, author and attempted murderer Valerie Solanas.
Your favorite mouthy broads Kaytlin Bailey (@kaytlinbailey) and Wendi Starling (@wendibird82) are safe, alive and BACK with a fresh new episode and, once again, are joined by the incomparably fabulous Ceyenne Doroshow (@doroshow) to unwrap the tumultuously tantalizing life of Dorian Corey. As documented in the film “Paris Is Burning”, Corey was one of the queens of the NYC Ball Culture that went to the grave keeping one of her darkest secrets in the closet.
The ladies also discuss setting boundaries with partners, finding the strength to leave a bad situation AND the importance of having a surplus of baking soda (or any white white powder) within reach of your bedazzled ball gowns.
French courtesan Marguerite Marie Alibert, otherwise known as Maggie Meller, was the lover of Edward the VII. After her affair with the British prince, she married a rich, snotty and young Egyptian aristocrat, whom she killed in a fancy hotel room in London. The girls talk about homeopathic vadge stuff, how murder is not okay even if the victim is a man, and hipsters who snap instead of clapping.
The ladies are once again joined by the fiercely funny Ceyenne Doroshow (@doroshow) and these 3 mouthy sound off about Stormy Daniels’ latest bad bitch moves, the slippery subject of fondling foreskin AND discuss whether or not Bailey Davis (recently fired Saints cheerleader) was laboring under conditions eerily similar to trafficking. Then, Kaytlin (@kaytlinbailey) and Wendi (@wendibird82) dive into the story of Elizabeth Moryng, a 13th Century madame who serviced the religious clergy under the guise of operating an embroidery business and consider the pros and cons of fucking while wearing all of your clothes. Wet-wipe your crotches and hike up your granny panties because this episode is bound to get you hot and bothered… mostly bothered because of the harm FOSTA/SESTA is doing to SWs and the feminist movement in general but who knows, maybe this time around we’ll pull together and change the course of history

A larger than life bombshell, Smith was labeled a white trash, gold-digging whore throughout her career then died of a drug overdose at the age of 39. But was she a gold-digger OR was she actually in a loving relationship with J. Howard Marshall who was 63 years older than her? The girls break down the inherent hypocrisy of society’s demonization and ostracization of women for capitalizing on their sexuality when they are raised to believe that their most valuable asset is tucked away between their thighs. We also hear about Kaytlin (@kaytlinbailey) throwing away her virginity after several failed attempts AND Wendi’s (@wendibird82) creepy new porn obsession! PLUS are there benefits to loose, hanging jowls? What kind of monster doesn’t let you have a glass of water?? Can you actually motorboat someone to death?!?

They also detail the shift in Grecian society that streamlined all sex workers and essentially morphed Athens into the Walmart of prostitution. The girls then tackle the issue of women being sexy vs. strong. Does our society still view female sensuality as a mystical, destabilizing force that strips men of all self control? Why in the world would a chick force her friends to take off their makeup at a sleepover?? What kind of a discount does Wendi (@wendistarling) give for being a cool dude?!? They also breakdown the current stripper strike in NYC which addresses the very important question… what in the actual fuck is a ‘STARtender’?!?

Instead of shamefully hiding their pasts as pussy peddlers, these two broads are enthusiastically examining and celebrating the storied history of the world’s oldest profession and the heroic whores that had a hand (or at least a pinky finger) in shaping society as we know it today.
