Filmmakers love making films, but most of us don’t know how to get a feature film funded or distributed in 2024. To help answer all these questions and more, let me introduce “My First Film.”
This brand-new video podcast by Alec C. Cohen, supported by ProVideo Coalition, will have weekly guests who are established feature film directors detailing their experience making their first movie. They’ll talk through their background, how they got into filmmaking, their opinions on Film School, and what other decisions led up to the idea of their first film. Then we’ll deep dive into every step of the process: writing, development, pre-production, production, post-production, and distribution. We’ll also try and touch on how the success of their first feature led to their second feature and other creative ventures.

In this episode of Art of the Frame, we delve into the visual and special effects in Ridley Scott's latest epic, "Napoleon". The podcast explores the remarkable efforts of the effects teams to vividly recreate 19th century Europe and its battlefields, bringing historical grandeur to life with striking authenticity. Our journey takes us behind the scenes to understand the complexities and challenges faced in visualizing one of history's most iconic eras, especially in the portrayal of monumental battles like Austerlitz and Waterloo.
Our resident VFX supe Damian Allen engages in conversation with four supervisors of the film's visual and special effects: Visual Effects supervisor Charley Henley, special effects supervisor Neil Corbould, Luc-Ewen Martin-Fenouillet (a visual effects supervisor at MPC), and Simone Coco, (a visual effects supervisor at Disney’s ILM), discuss how their teams helped transport Napoleon and his era onto the screen for a 21st century audience.

Mobolajia Olambiwonuu is a Nigerian immigrant who struggled with what it meant to be Black in America when he was literally an African American. His outlook on race in America helped to formulate his work both as a professor at film school and a documentary filmmaker. He is the filmmaker behind the documentary “Ferguson Rises.”
It’s a look at how the lives of Michael Brown’s family, particularly his father, were turned upside down after Michael’s killing by Ferguson, MO police officer Darren Wilson. It’s a film that looks at how a community finds purpose in pain, and it’s executive produced by the likes of actor David Oyelowo, the rapper Rza, Academy Award-winning producer TJ Martin, and others. Mobolaji and I have a great conversation about his work, his thoughts on other prominent black filmmakers, how differently he saw himself as an African immigrant in America relative to Black people born here, and how he overcame challenges to make this documentary.

On this week’s episode of Crossing the 180, I speak with a special kind of doc filmmaker. Joële Walinga had an entry at this year’s SXSW that one show organizer said was their favorite. The name of the film is “Self-portrait,” and it’s a documentary is unlike any you’ve seen. It’s just over an hour of surveillance camera footage from around the world. Here’s the SXSW description: “A tapestry of footage collected from surveillance cameras over the last four years, Self-Portrait moves from moment to moment around the world, beginning with the frozen storminess of winter, to the melt of spring, the lush heat of summer, and finally the decay and cooling of autumn: the dawn of winter. The film shows a candid peek at humanity as it has chosen to document itself – all of these cameras set up for primarily capitalistic, "property"-protecting purposes, but yielding a beauty and a truth – an incidental portrait.
My conversation with Joële is one of those evocative conversations that cover a whole range of topics that intrigue the inner artists: parental relationships, faith, curiosity, passion, etc. You’ll be as intrigued with this conversation as you will with Joële’s interview.

We interrupt the worldwide fixation on the “slap heard ‘round the world” to bring you a brighter, more jovial look at “Black Hollywood.” Today on the show we have the one, the only, Chris Spencer. If you don’t know that name, trust me, you’ve seen his work. Chris is a prolific writer and comedian best known for co-creating “Real Husbands of Hollywood.” But he’s also written for the Emmy’s, written and acted alongside the Wayans, does stand up at the top comedy clubs in the country, and co-hosts with his wife Vanessa Rodriguez, “Date Night with Chris and Vanessa” on Kevin Hart’s SiriusXM “Laugh Out Loud” channel.
Chris is a man who literally knows everyone in “Black Hollywood” (Barack Obama’s people called Chris when they wanted Will Smith’s phone number). He recently finished directing his first feature film, "Back on the Strip," and it’s chock-full of names like Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, JB Smoove, Faizon Love, Wesley Snipes, and Bill Bellamy, to name a few.
In this funny and informative interview, Chris shares about his experiences as a writer and comedian breaking into the business, what it was like directing his first feature, some of the challenges in post-production when you and the editor don’t see eye-to-eye, and why he turned down Kevin Hart’s offer to be Creative Director of Kevin’s enterprise.
I know I say this every time, but you REALLY don’t want to miss this one!

In all the years I’ve interviewed filmmakers, there’s one role I’ve yet to interview—a story producer! Well, this week I check that off the list. From her work on a pilot documentary series for Vice, to her work on reality TV shows like “Dancing with the Stars,” Marissa Messiano has a wide range of experiences. In this episode, you'll learn exactly how a story producer works with the editor to bring a documentary or reality TV show to life. (And her “Sound of Music” story alone is worth the price of admission.)

Today you’re getting a special treat on this episode of Crossing the 180. I have on the show my long-time friend and colleague Kristen Souders. I first met Kristen in the mid naughts, when we were both wedding filmmakers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kristen founded and ran a very successful studio called Bliss Video Productions. At the time, she had risen to prominence as a personal event filmmaker known for shooting celebrity weddings and events. As someone who has a keen eye on branding and succeeds at whatever she does, I’ve interviewed her a number of times over the years, and each one is filled with inspiring insights.
In today’s episode, she shares how her career progressed from high-end wedding filmmaker to the stars, to Senior Director for Creative Brand and Global Events at an international conglomerate like Hitachi Vantara.

Today I bring you part two of my interview with film and television producer extraordinaire, Yolanda T. Cochran. Yolanda's a member of the PGA and the Academy and she has a career that spans nearly three decades in increasingly greater producer roles. She was the #3 person and head of physical production at Alcon Entertainment, a consultant to Netflix, EVP of TV production and ABC's Freeform, and as of this episode, SVP of live TV production at Nickelodeon.
Part 1 covered the state of gender and race in Hollywood. This week we get into the various different roles of producers, and how they differ in feature film production vs. television. We also get into the experience she and I have had pitching our own TV show and she shares what it means to bring your full authentic self as a creator.
This is a great episode to share with anyone who is interested in learning about this business overall. It's kind of like mini business/film school class.

One of the things I try to do with this podcast is introduce you, my good listeners, to various aspects of the filmmaking world. Editors, DPs, Writers, and producers are all fair game—whether you're above or below the line. In the last episode, I interviewed the CEO and founder of the DIY distribution platform Kinema, Christie Marchese. So even film-related entrepreneurs make this show.
Today I have a very special guest for you. One of my best friends is Yolanda T. Cochran. I joke how because she's such a good friend, I tend to forget how truly impressive her CV is. She's a member of the Producers Guild of America, an Academy member, got her start working at Disney, was at Alcon Entertainment for about a dozen or so years where she helped lead the production of such films as the Traveling Pants Series, the Blind Side, and Book of Eli. After Alcon, she went to do work for Netflix, was a TV exec at ABC Freeform, and as of this episode is Senior VP of Live Television Production at Nickelodeon.
From filmmaking to television production, Yolanda has deep insights and experience across it all. We covered so much ground that this episode is part 1 of 2. In part one, Yolanda and I cover her getting in the business and the state of gender and racial representation in Hollywood, and what it's been like for her as a black woman in this industry. In the next episode of the show in two weeks, she and I will go deep into the roles of producers in film and television.
This is a great episode to share with anyone who is interested in learning about this business overall. It's kind of like a mini business/film school class.

Today on the show I speak with the founder and CEO of Kinema, a company whose mission is to make it fun, easy, and financially rewarding for anyone who wants to screen a movie—from individuals to organizations.
One of the things I try to do with this podcast is to explore ALL aspects of filmmaking and the industry that are intriguing, provocative, and interesting. I wanted to create a show that feels like the kind of geeky, cinema-loving conversations that you'd have with your filmmaking friends in the corner of a party, or at happy hour after a long day at work. And boy, today's conversation with Christie is that to a tee. We cover a wide range of topics like the role of Disney princesses in cinema, how do we deal with movies made by cinematic heroes who've fallen, and how race, gender, and sexuality have been portrayed in movies and television. I have no doubt you'll enjoy listening to this discussion as much I did having it.

This week on the show Ron interviews Edu Grau, the director of photography for Rebecca Hall's black and white film "Passing." This is a film where the themes of the story about a light-skinned black woman, played by Ruth Negga, parallel the medium on which the story is told. Ruth's character is played opposite Tessa Thompson, herself a woman who could pass, but chooses not to (at least not permanently).
Edu is a cinematographer with an impressive background, being one of the youngest people to be inducted into the ASC. At the young age of 27, he was given the opportunity to shoot fashion designer Tom Ford's feature directorial debut "A Single Man." Edu shares the incredible story of how that happened, how his career skyrocketed from there as he went on to DP for such films as "Buried," "Boy Erased," and "Suffragette," and became a sought-after commercial DP. If you want insights into directing an artistic black and white film shot in 4:3 aspect ratio at a time when the more "K's" you have in your camera the better, this is the interview for you.

The N-word is the granddaddy of all non-PC words. It's been at the heart of many a controversy in the artistic community about its use. Today on the show we have three filmmakers taking on this topic straight on with the production of their short film "The Hard R." But two of the filmmakers are not at all who you might expect to be making such a film: a white, Jewish co-writer, Levi Gordon, and an Assyrian co-writer/director, Adad Warda. They're joined by their creative producing partner, a black woman and veteran film producer, Madisun Leigh. We'll get into how the project came about, how Adad got involved, why Madisun was cool with producing such a project, and we'll also get into some of their thoughts and processes of raising money via a crowdfunding program.

As of this episode, we're less than a week away from the Emmy's. HBO's critically acclaimed limited series Mare of Easttown has 16 nominations, including two for editing. One of the show's editing nominees is today's guest, Naomi Sunrise Filoramo.
Naomi is a passionate lover of film and has an impressive CV that includes editing work on productions like One Night in Miami, White House Down, and Grey's Anatomy. Chances are you've read or heard one of the many interviews with her. But I'm confident in saying that you have not read or heard an interview with Naomi quite like this!
In addition to covering her journey as a professional editor, her work on the show, her thoughts on some of the show's most riveting scenes, how she does what she does, etc., we also cover such engaging and provocative topics as:
-Can you separate the sins of an artist from their art
-The legacy of John Hughes films
-The history of women in editing
-Gender and racial representation in film and television
-The origins of her unique middle name

He has worked on videos for artists such as Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez and Imagine Dragons. Commercial work includes spots for Lexus, General Motors and Fox Sports. Chancler also has a long collaborative history with director Joseph Kahn that includes the feature film Bodied.
While the intention of this podcast was to talk about music video editing (and they do just that) there is also a lot of discussion on editing commercial spots, dealing with agencies, on-set editing, and Chancler tells a fantastic story about how he began that relationship with Kahn. Enjoy the episode!

Peacock TV's "We Are Lady Parts" is a hilarious, touching, and uplifting comedy with a "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" kinda vibe. The brainchild of British television writer and producer Nida Manzoor, it is a 6-episode series the follows the trials and tribulations of an all-Muslim woman punk band. Those two apparently diametrically opposed aspects of the band are the perfect recipe for a show that is funny, quirky, and at the same time, explores themes of faith, friendship, loyalty, and obligations. The show has a very distinct look in its color and composition, so I was thrilled to have a conversation with the director of photography for the show, UK-based Diana Olifrova.

When it comes to digital media production and marketing, few people have quite the experience as Mykim Dang (pronounced ME-kim). She's produced work for such companies as Facebook and in her role as Executive Producer of video production at America's Test Kitchen, she's helped create and distribute content for one of the premier brands in the world of cuisine. In this in-depth interview with her, we cover a wide range of topics related to producing content for a YouTube channel with about 1.3 million subscribers. We also dive into her thoughts related to diversity in the industry, the Bon Appetit and Reply All podcast fiasco, and why she thinks David Fincher has been the most profound influencer on the evolution of streaming video.
Also back on the show this week is actress, musician, and filmmaker Sapna Gandhi, head of content at the film collective We Make Movies. If you're interested in applying for the film competition she mentioned, go to wemakemovies.org/competition.

Kimmy has an impressive CV as a television writer, editor, actor, and primarily director. Her narrative feature debut is the Netflix Original "Good on Paper" written by and starring comedian Iliza Schlessinger.
On this episode we take a deep dive into Kimmy's career. From her early days doing improv, to her television career, to what it was like directing this feature. Along for the ride is guest co-host Tehana Weeks of We Make Movies. Tehana is a talented actress in her own right who also has an improv background, so the two of them geek out on that a bit. Stick around for the post-interview discussion Tehana and I have.

On this episode of Crossing the 180 we have Alice Brooks, director of photography for Jon Chu's adaptation of Lin Manuel-Miranda's Broadway musical sensation "In the Heights." Alice shares about her artistic inspirations, the complexity in shooting musicals and choreographed dancing, how they performed some of those more complex scenes from the movie (like the dancing on the side of the building scene), and some of the technical challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
This is the first episode where I have guest co-hosts. This is something I'll do from time to time to make for a deeper, more engaging conversation. Today we have two actors, Tehana Weeks and Sapna Gandhi. Tehana and Sapna are part of the film collective We Make Movies, which provides resources, workshops, productions services and insurance for filmmakers. (If you're interested in learning more about the film competition they mentioned near the end of the show, click here.)
As two women of color in this business, Tehana and Sapna were the perfect pair to have an engaging conversation about the colorism controversy surrounding the movie. In short, there's been some backlash from those who feel the movie, despite being focused on a LatinX community, had no Afro-Latino leads, a demographic that is prevalent in the Washington Heights area of New York where it takes place. The conversation we have is after the main interview and does a good job addressing both sides of the issue.

On this week’s episode of Crossing the 180, we have the producer and director respectively of “The Paper Tigers”—Al’n Duong and Bao Tran. This martial arts comedy looks at what happens when three middle-aged friends and ex-Kung Fu champions look for the killer of their old master. In addition to learning about how they brought this film to life (a decade-long journey), they share:
-Their take on Asian representation in the business
-What they think makes a great martial arts film (Bao’s answer will DEFINITELY surprise you)
-and I ask them the infamous question: whose version of Old Boy had the best hallway fight scene: Park-Chan wook, or Spike Lee.
There are no spoilers for the film, so feel free to listen to this episode safely. But also, I strongly recommend watching it on Amazon, or getting the Blu-ray.
The video of Al’n I reference at the beginning of the show.
