New single malt distilleries have been popping up everywhere be they in the UK, EU, US, Asia, the Middle East, etc... it seems one can't open up their email inboxes without hearing news of a new distillery enterprise. Quite exciting if you ask us!
Nearly all of these distilleries start by launching a Vodka and a Gin (or some sort of "botanical spirit") to keep their distillery afloat while they wait for their whisky to be of age to bottle and sell. Most of these distilleries -- some of our very favorites, to be very clear -- are set up specifically to produce delicious whiskies at very young ages (3, 4, 5yo, etc...).
This is where Kythe's approach stands apart. Their aim is to make whisky in the manner it was made in the 50's/60's/70's which could very well mean they're not expected to release a standard core whisky for quite some time. Impatient folk like us may have to wait (and wait) to taste. The waiting is the hardest part but good things also come to those that wait so....
Anywho, listen in as Jess discusses the ins and outs of the Kythe Distillery with 2 of its founders: Jonny McMillan & Angus MacRaild. Listen, too, to hear details of our latest US release and our upcoming global releases. 8 casks of whisky. So many that we're calling it a #MurderOfCasks !

Joshua and Jason have a sit down with the wonderful Lasse Vesterby, CEO & Co-Founder of Stauning Whisky Distillery.
While rye whisky continues to grow and evolve here in the US, just a stones throw across the pond is our friends at Stauning Whisky Distillery in Denmark who've also had a keen focus on rye whisky. But, alas (or thankfully?), because Denmark does not have a centuries old tradition of whisky making, Stauning is free to create the whiskies it wants to make and, boy or boy, are they creating some fantastic whiskies (both rye and single malt)!
Listen in as J&J dig deep into Stauning with Lasse. Add to this, the pair review a Stauning single cask bottled for First Fill Spirits out of Saratoga Springs as well as Westland's new Beer Cask Finish.

For some, whisky is a passing thing to enjoy every now and again ("gimme a Scotch on the rocks!"), for others it's a hobby to be explored while you're living the rest of your life as normal, and for others, like Irene Tan, it's a fascination and an obsession.
Irene Tan is, perhaps, one of the most passionate people in whisk(e)y here in the US and her name is synonymous with great barrel picks for her shop (Canterbury Liquors aka Whisky Mentors) as well as fascinating and delicious blends.
Listen in and learn why Irene is someone you should be paying attention to if you care about whisky.

The first in a series of interviews held in Texas during an SCN launch features Jason sitting down with Emma Crandall & Gabe RiCharde of Balcones Distilling. The trio discuss distilling and blending practices, basically all things Balcones, but touch on the category and future of American Single Malt writ large.
This episode is paired quite well with an SCN release of Balcones -- a massively delicious single malt made exclusively from the legendary Golden Promise barley. Why not open your bottle and enjoy this episode with a generous pour? Don't have a bottle yet? Let's remedy that: https://bit.ly/3X9Q6QD

Joshua and Jason met MGP's Master Distiller, Ian Stirsman, on a chance encounter at the legendary Jack Rose Dining Saloon just after an equally legendary Single Cask Nation event just after the pair won the 2024 Icons of Whisky Award for Independent Bottler of the Year.
Having the chance to talk to someone responsible for making the world's most recognizable bourbon and rye whiskies was a true blessing and a blast to boot!
Add to this, the duo brought Ford Ray in on the conversation as part of Ford's #GivingTuesday2023 winnings. Ford is a long standing Nation member and getting to know him a bit more was time well spent. We hope you agree.

Joshua, Jason, and James have some shared history as all three started their whisky careers via their blogs. Joshua had Jewmalt, Jason had Guid Scotch Drink, and James had Scotch Odyssey.
Fast-forward 13 years and, well, you know Joshua and Jason's story with the birth and growth of Single Cask Nation, but James' journey (or should we say odyssey) led him to the one to take the helm as Whiskymaking Director of Compass Box as John Glaser steps down. Holy moly if that's not the dream of a whisky lover's lifetime we're not sure what is!
Add to this, Joshua and Jason detail the launch of Free Shipping at singlecasknation.com as well as re-share the details of their 6 new American whiskies launching June 6th, 2024.
There's so much to share but, seeing as this is a podcast, best to listen than to read, no?

Few people in the industry have had as storied career in whisky in the way that Chris Riesbeck has. Aside from Chris' story being a fascinating one, Chris is a dear friend and someone Joshua and Jason have been keen to have on the podcast. Today is that day. Add to all this, Joshua and Jason share details of the next 6 bottlings for SCN Online and they're all American whiskies. Real charmers, to be sure.

Aiming to be green is not a new idea. There are a number of distilleries within Scotland (and the around the world) that are taking measures to improve their processes while reducing their carbon foot print.
What is new is a distillery who leads with this idea. From their barley, to their boiler, to their bottles, Nc'nean distillery have proven themselves to be good stewards of our planet while producing whisky that they're incredibly proud of (because it's wonderfully delicious).

Those that follow bourbon surely know both Denny Potter and Jane Bowie. If not due to their work with Maker's Mark (as well as Heaven Hill in the case of Denny Potter) surely for being on the padcost previously (talking about Maker's Mark & Heaven Hill... boy, I'm typing in circles!).
Having Jane and Denny back on the padcost was an absolute treat. Discussing to the Potter Jane story; hearing how it started and how things are going was a joy as were the laughs along the way.

As far as we're aware, you can count the number of US-based independent bottlers; bottling whisky in the Scottish tradition where the distillery is highlighted/mentioned on two fingers: Single Cask Nation and Lost Lantern.

As a padcost and as padcosters Joshua and Jason always set out to have a fair bit of a focus on independent brands, independent bottlers, and just the independent spirit of the whisky industry in general.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is not a distiller and they do not refer to themselves as an independent bottler. Rather, that are a "Society" (and quite easily the largest whisky society on the planet) that bottles whisky specifically for their Society members. It's a different take, for sure, but one of the most successful "different takes" on whisky since its inception some 41 years ago.
Listen in as Joshua and Jason talk with two key people within the SMWS: Kai Ivalo (Spirits Director) and Euan Campbell (Head of Whisky Creation). The conversation a blast, was wide ranging, and supplemented by a new sherry cask speysider.

One of the nice things about having Covid (mostly) behind us is we get to travel and do live Padcost recordings again. Listen in as Joshua, Jason, and Jess discuss all things Westland with Ana Hinz, Business Development Manager, and Tyler Pederson, Distillery Manager and Master Distillery. We also taste through Westland's Flagship bottling, their new Garryana 8, and Single Cask Nation's new Peated Westland 9yo from a Pineau des Charentes cask.
It was a packed house at the distillery. Thanks to all that came out and to all who asked such great questions. Cheers!

Earlier this year Joshua & Jason's dear friend, Holly Seidewand, co-proprietor of the whisky-centric shop: First Fill Spirits, wrote in off the back of our "Year in Preview" episode with Susannah Skiver Barton. The topic? DTC (direct to consumer) sales. Based on her thoughtful email the boys knew we had to have Holly back on the padcost.
This time around the boys invited their friend Anthony Levenson, too, so he should shed additional light on the world of retail liquor sales & DTC. Anthony runs the spirits side of the business at Roma Wines in NYC. He's also a helluva guy.

You know it's going to be a great episode when Westland Distillery's very own Matt Hofmann is a guest! What makes this episode even more greaterer is the boys get ultra geeky about barley, the grain commodity system, and, perhaps most importantly, Westland's "Solum" release -- their first ever whisky which used barley peated with Washington State peat. We're kicking off Season 7 of One Nation Under Whisky with the one and only Victoria Eady Butler.
Victoria is not only Whisky Magazine's 2021 & 2022's Master Blender of the year she's also the great-great grand daughter of Nathan "Nearest" Green, the father of the Lincoln County Process, a process integral to any Tennessee whisky wanting to call itself, in fact, 'Tennessee' whisky!
This was a wonderful conversation with Victoria and one, we think, is worthy of a season opener. We trust you'll agree!

Few people have their finger on the whisky pulse like Susannah Skiver Barton. Joshua and Jason welcome Susannah back to One Nation Under Whisky to discuss the future of whisky. Well, at least what it may look like in 2023. We also laugh along the way.
Also shared are details of Single Cask Nation US Retail Release # 9, the migration of our Extra Extra podcast from audio-only to the Single Cask Nation YouTube channel (yeah, you read that right), and we taste our 4th and final sample from Blind Barrels.

Our 6th Annual Year in Review episode is here! The agenda? Joshua and Jason discuss their favorite episode, SCN whiskies, and non-SCN whiskies of 2022 (all while drinking as much as was needed to ensure this episode was their best Year in Review episode to date!).
What could be better? We'll tell you what: doing this annual review from the newly acquired SCN Swiss Chalet. Add to this, Jess & Elijah came out to the SCN Swiss Chalet to share their whiskies of the year. Heck, you may even hear from Joshua's wife, Heide, and what her favorite yarn of the year was!

More often than not people tell us that one of their favorite episodes is the one where we interviewed Ollie Chilton while driving and killed a bird with our windshield. The good news is Ollie has returned to the podcast for another "car talk" to discuss Elixir Distiller's acquisition of Tormore Distillery in Speyside and their build of Portintruan on Islay.
The more good news is no birds were harmed in the making of this episode. Well, none we're aware of.

After having his induction to the Keepers of the Quaich for two and a half years (thanks, Covid) Jason has finally be inducted as a Keeper into the one and only Keepers of the Quaich.
If you're not familiar, "The Keepers of the Quaich is an exclusive and international society that recognises those that have shown outstanding commitment to the Scotch Whisky industry. Founded by the leading distillers, it is by its very nature, the beating heart of the industry. In establishing the Keepers of the Quaich, the industry pooled its influential resources to build a powerful society working together and united.
Keepers of the Quaich are dedicated and passionate people around the world who are proud to be part of a select society and who are dedicated to achieving greater appreciation of our magnificent spirit – Scotch Whisky."

The whisky industry is steeped in centuries of tradition be it here in the US, in Scotland, Ireland, and more recently in the 20th & 21st centuries in dozens of countries around the world.
The 21st century, however has brought on a new phenomenon: accelerated aging of spirit or, in the case of Bespoken Spirits, "craft aging". Will this new process replace centuries of tradition or live side by side it comfortably.
Listen in as Joshua and Jason have a deep conversation with Stu & Martin of Bespoken Spirits discuss this very topic.

In the last episode of Extra! Extra! It's All About Whisky!! Joshua and Jason discussed a top ten list of whiskies (between $150 - $200) as offered up by Uproxx. After recording that episode they had the smarts to make their own list of top ten whisky but with no dollar amount attached to the list -- just a list of their must-haves for all whisky shelves. What are your must-have whisky bottles?

Michael Jackson -- no, not the dancing white glove wearing singer, the beer and whisky writer -- is someone Joshua and Jason never had the good fortune of meeting despite Michael having been a driving force in both their whisky journeys.
As a driving force in their whisky journeys, as you might imagine, they would have *loads* of questions for him! Sadly Michael passed away before either of the Js could ever meet him. The next best thing? Find more out about the man through his partner of many years, Carolyn Smagalski (aka The Beer Fox), and his dear friends Dave Broom and Hans Offringa.

Speaking with someone who has their finger on the pulse of the entire whisky industry is always a treat and Susannah Skiver Barton is always that someone for Joshua and Jason. Erudite and insightful as well as thoughtful and funny spending any time with SSB (as the boys affectionately refer to her!) is time very well spent. In their conversation they discussed how 2020 severely impacted the whisky industry, what needs to be done to make sure we encourage more women and people of color to join us in our whisky circles, and predict what lies ahead in 2021. And they certainly shared a few laughs along the way.

Getting back into discussions of independent bottling is always Joshua and Jason's comfort zone. It's been a while since the pair had an independent bottler on the padcost so it was important to bring in some independent bottling royalty. Enter: Cara Laing, Director of Whisky at Douglas Laing. In today's episode Joshua and Jason have a good sit down with whisky legend Robin Coupar. When someone thinks "whisky legend" they usually picture the master distiller, master blender, or distillery manager. It's not often one thinks about a Brand Manager or Brand Advocate as a whisky legend. However, in the case of Robin Coupar, his status being legendary is apropos. If you've discovered brands like Glenrothes, Wild Turkey, Yamazaki, Glen Grant, Appleton Estate, Forty Creek and more, you can thank, in good part, Mr. Coupar. Know it or not, Robin is the person who helped you discover these great brands.

Joshua and Jason love it when the wide world of whisky grows wider and further (and better). Brands like Amrut, Yamazaki, Nikka, etc... have surely paved the way for countless "world whisky" distilleries growing in popularity. It would seem that the more Joshua and Jason talk to people about whisky the more people start asking "hey, what do you think of rum?" The boys noticed this more and more. It would make sense; the two have been bottling rums since 2017.
What do they think of it? They know they love it but they also understand there's so much about rum they simply know nothing of. How best to remedy that? Ring up Rum Whisperer Mitch Wilson!

Joshua and Jason join Matt "Skinny" Roberts on a detour into beer. Well, seeing as whisky is just beer that's been distilled and aged, perhaps not so much of a detour but a deeper dive into fermentation? Sure., That sounds about right. Right?
The boys have had Skinny on the podcast before during the live Westland episode in Season 2. Listen in as they enjoy a long form and super geeky conversation with Black Raven Brewing Co's very own Matt "Skinny" Roberts.

As you know, Joshua and Jason like to take a detour from whisky now and again. In previous episodes the boys interviewed Garth Ennis (writer of the cult classic comics Preacher and The Boys, now major TV shows on AMC and Amazon, respectively), Adal Rifai (comedian and Chuntttttt from Hello from the Magic Tavern), and Matthew Rhys (Emmy Award winning actor from The Americans, The Post, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood).
Today's detour takes us out of this world! Well, out of the whisky-world and into the great wide world of particle physics and The Universe... The guest today is famed Particle Physicist Daniel Whiteson. Daniel, and his good friend Jorge Cham, creator of PhD Comics, co-host the podcast "Daniel and Jorge Explain The Universe". They're also the co-authors of We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe. If you'd like, you can watch Daniel's TED Talk HERE.

Remember that time when folks used to gather in larger groups and enjoy one another's company? That might seem like a distant memory but this podcast episode proves that we did, as a species, enjoy one another's close and personal company, especially when accompanied with a whisky or 5! Listen in as Charlie Prince, the Prince of whisky clubs, argues with Joshua and Jason about which spirit is the best in the world: Scotch or bourbon.
Some special guests joined the discussion: Holly Seidewand of Bacardi (as well as our last interview), Robin Robinson (another previous guest), Bill Thomas of Jack Rose in DC, and Dave Schmier of Proof and Wood (who, btw, is the person who developed Redemption Rye some 10 or 11 years back).

Joshua and Jason asked themselves, "what is it like promoting distilleries that have been around for a couple hundred years providing malt whisky for blends but has only *just* started releasing their own whiskies as single malt?" There was only one way to find out -- ask the person who's in charge of brand awareness for Craigellachie, Aultmore, Aberfeldy, Macduff, and Royal Brackla in the US: Holly Seidewand. Listen in as Holly gets really, really geeky about the brands she reps as well as the whisky industry as a whole!

Quite possibly the biggest name in the whisky world, Sukinder Singh is a good many things. His personal life aside, from a professional standpoint, he owns and operates the worlds largest online retailer of whisky, The Whisky Exchange; he owns the UK's largest drinks distribution company, Speciality Drinks; he runs The Whisky Show in London and co-runs the famous "Old & Rare" Show; he owns a good many Independent Bottling labels such as Port Askaig and Single Malts of Scotland... the list can go on.
Interestingly Joshua and Jason discussed none of this. Rather the conversation led the trio to the topics of Whisky Collecting, Auctions, and Whisky Fakes (faked bottles). Mr. Singh is likely the world's biggest collector of Scotch Whisky (and could well have the largest collections of individual bottles at 12 or 13 thousand) and has likely been collecting longer than most people. This is easily one of the most interesting conversations Joshua and Jason had about whisky.

When it comes to the world/thought/idea(s) behind modern whisky blending companies few, if any, are as well known or well regarded as our friends at Compass Box. No one in modern history has been able to capture the imagination around blended whisky in the way that John Glaser and team have done and continue to do.
Joshua and Jason have an in-depth conversation with both John & James (wait, that's like 4 J's there!!) regarding the art and passion behind blending whisky. The boys also discuss the rules the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) have laid down (and how Compass Box and other are challenging some of these laws).

You come to the One Nation Under Whisky podcast for the geeky and nerdy whisky discussion and today's episode is no different. Actually, yes it is. The whisky geekery level goes to 11 in today's conversation with Knockdhu Distillery's Distillery Manager, Gordon Bruce.
We talk fermentation, yeast types, mashing, cycloning, the reasons for why some distilleries would want a clear wash (fermentation) rather than a cloudy one, and so much more.

Joshua and Jason have known the good Alistair Walker for years -- all the way back when he was with the BenRiach Distilling Company and they had just started Single Cask Nation, asking him if he would sell them casks (which he eventually did in the form of a 17yo peated BenRiach). You see, the shoe is on the other foot now...
Since the sale of BenRiach, GlenDronach, and Glenglassaugh FROM the Walker family TO Brown-Forman, Alistair has opened his own whisky company, the Alistair Walker Whisky Co, with the focus on one major thing: Independent Bottling under the "Infrequent Flyers" label. Let's listen in as Jason and Alistair discuss this very thing.

Let's all get our geek on with Meeghan Murdoch of Glenrinnes Distillery (located in Benrinnes, Scotland). Today Meeghan teaches us how the ins and outs of mashing, fermenting, and distilling can and do affect mouthfeel (THE thing that can make or break the drinking experience)!

What makes for an amazing whisky festival? Well, it starts with a great idea but is supported by an army of helpers to ensure that the event goes to plan without a hitch. We know this because we (Joshua and Jason) had run Whisky Jewbilee in the states for 7 years across 3 cities. Our guest today, Teun Van Wel, knows this doubly so as his Maltstock events don't just run 3 hours but run for a full weekend and have done so since its inception in 2009. How does he do it? Yes, Joshua and Jason announce a very special project with Catoctin Creek and, yes, Kilchoman distillery!
On top of this Becky Harris, Catoctin Creek's Chief Distiller and Owner, discusses how distilling the whisky for this project is different from all other whisky they distilled. It's common knowledge/scientific fact that around 70-75% of flavor in whisky is dictated by the casks said whisky matures in. Whisky. Whisky, whisky, whisky, and occasionally, whiskEy.
Sometimes it's nice to have a little break from our favorite drink (whisky) and delve into different worlds. This time around we're delving deep into the world of Agave spirits, our 2nd favorite drinks category, and specifically Mezcal (though we do touch on raicilla, tequila, and even a non -gave spirit known as Sotol).
Having an expert like Alan Grubauskas to guide the conversation was invaluable and we thank him greatly for his time.

It's amazing to think that nearly every country in the world now creates some sort of whisky. Israel is no exception though we can vouch that whisky from Israel is exceptional. "Whisky from Israel?!" you might say. "Yes," says us, "whisky from the land of milk and honey."

Joshua and Jason consider themselves incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to travel all over the world to interview some of the most interesting people within the whisky-making industry (and each guest is as interesting as the next). It's not every day you're on Islay. It's not every day you're on Islay during Feis Ile (the Islay Festival of Music and Malt), and it's not every day you're on Islay during Feis Ile and interviewing Bowmore Distillery Manager David Turner in the famous Bowmore No. 1 Vaults. Listen in as Joshua and Jason talk with Matthew Rhys (did we mention he's an EMMY AWARD WINNING ACTOR?!) about whisky, acting, dad jokes, kill rooms, Wales, Penderyn single malt Welsh whisky, and also, the boys drink some fine and rare whiskies with Mr. Rhys. Single Malt, Pure Malt, Rice based, and Blends... these are the categories of Japanese whisky (jinkies, could there be more??). While we do not discuss Single Malt or Blended Japanese Whisky with Chris Uhde, we do discuss the two more confusing categories: Pure Malt and Rice based whiskies.
Chris Uhde, co-owner of ImpEx Beverages, has a unique perspective when it comes to Japanese whisky. Joshua and Jason found the conversation to be riveting. We hope you do, too.

Getting whisky onto your shelf at home, or in a retail shop, or on a bar back really isn't that easy. We Americans have this pesky thing called the three tiered system, which makes it tough for us to get all the nice things we want. Then, as if to throw salt on a wound, each and every state has its own unique set of laws that could make it increasingly hard for you to get the bottle(s) you want. Joshua and Jason have a conversation with Sam Filmus, owner of ImpEx Beverages (a national import company) and JVS (a California distribution company). If anyone can shed a light onto the difficulties of our three tiered system, it's Sam. Dude's got street cred!

"The Keepers of the Quaich is an exclusive and international society that recognizes those that have shown outstanding commitment to the Scotch Whisky industry. Founded by the leading distillers, it is by its very nature, the beating heart of the industry. In establishing the Keepers of the Quaich, the industry pooled its influential resources to build a powerful society working together and united."
Our very own Joshua has been made a Keeper of the Quaich (and likes to don his Kippah of the Quaich)! Listen in as Joshua and Jason recount the night and banquet where Joshua was made a "Keeper."

Before there was print advertising, social media, likes, and hashtags, the only way to find out about a new whisky was visit your local or favorite bar and you, the drinker, would rely on the barkeep to recommend a whisky for you. To date, aside from larger events or seminars, that remains one of the only ways to really discover a new whisky; to actually get whisky into your mouth.
On today's episode we talk with Aaron Zacharias of Fountainhead Chicago, Mike Miller of Delilah's Chicago (recently called the best whisky bar in the world!), and Christopher Gronbeck of Barrel Thief Seattle. Listen in as we discuss cask selections, community, and innovation with these three fine gents.

That's not a whisky, THIS is a whisky!
Oh, sorry there. We really got into the whole Australian frame of mind via the lens of 80's icon Paul Hogan of Crocodile Dundee. Today, however, we're discussing craft whisky production in Australian with one of that nation's newest distillers: Leigh Attwood, owner and distiller at Backwoods Distilling Company, Yakandanda, Australia. Leigh was a joy to speak with. Let's hope he had as much fun talking with Joshua and Jason as they had talking (and learning) with him.

It's so lovely to have James Wills of Kilchoman back on our podcast. This time around James discusses the expansion of Kilchoman distillery, cracks many jokes, and even raps for us all a little bit. Another super whisky-geeky episode! This time around Jason visits with Vienna Barger and Susan Sigmon of Southern Distilling Company in Statesville, North Carolina. Vienna, co-owner of the distillery, schools us on the history of distilling in North Carolina (as well as the birth of bourbon in that fair state) and discusses what it means to be a contract distillery (as well as distilling their own products), and the TTB! If that weren't enough, Susan shares her insanely in-depth knowledge of grains, yeast, distilling (both in pot and column stills), and maturing whisky.

Joshua and Jason have been running Whisky Jewbilee across 3 major US cities for the past 7 years. Listen in as the boys do a post mortem of the 2018 Chicago event, reminisce about the good times and bad times over the past 7 years, and share the news of the event itself being mothballed for the foreseeable future. Gosh, that sounds more depressing than it actually is because the reasons for mothballing the event are positive, to be sure. Also, we promise there is some laughter to be had throughout the episode!

Sam Simmons, having been the Global Brand Ambassador for The Balvenie for close to 10 years, has easily one of the most recognizable faces in the world of whisky. Having given up that position to start a new whisky life with Atom Brands as their Head of Whisky (now, that's a job title, nu?), Sam finds himself with a bit of a challenge on his hands -- a challenge he's up to taking head on. When you've got the chance to interview the inimitable Billy Abbott from The Whisky Exchange fame you jump at it! That is of course if unless you're Joshua Hatton then you miss the opportunity altogether but revive that chance a year late. Now in his 2nd year of drinking at Maltstock with Billy Abbott, Joshua has made sure to carve time out to get Billy on wax to talk about what got him (Billy) into whisky, selecting casks for The Whisky Exchange (blindly), issues with shipping to the US and other pain in the butt countries, and what it's like being the voicebox of The Whisky Exchange.

There are a handful of people whom Joshua and Jason file into the "whisky god" column; these men and women of such great whisky renown that their faces and names are unavoidable. The great Charlie MacLean falls into this category and Alex Bruce is surely inching his way into this category, too.
The boys discuss what the individual spark was that got Charlie & Alex into the whisky industry. Also discussed are the histories of Adelphi Selections and Ardnamurchan Distillery.
No episode is complete, either, without the boys answering an email or two and discussing the weeks' news which, this time around, is focused on a surprise release of a 10yr 9mos old Single Cask Nation Wild Turkey bottling!

Penderyn distillery, located in the great country of Wales, has been producing single malts since 1999. The brand has relaunched in the US and the boys have a sit down with Jon Tregenna and Rob Weller of the distillery to get an understanding of what Penderyn is producing and how they're doing it all. From unique stills to an all-female distilling and blending team, Penderyn is making whisky unlike any other in the wide world of distilling, and damn are they doing a great job of it!

Joshua and Jason have been to the Wild Turkey distillery four times now. Each time the two were there they got to spend time with the inimitable Eddie Russell, son of the one and only Jimmy Russell, and father to today's guest, Bruce Russell.
While taking Joshua and Jason through Warehouse A to pick some casks for Single Cask Nation (and casks they do pick! two of them to be specific), Bruce talks to the boys about his family (and not just his dad and granddad), learning to write tasting notes with his dad, Jimmy Russell's palate, his own hatred for the word "smooth" (we KNEW he was a good lad!), and Bruce answers, too, questions from Facebook.

Rye whisky has made, and continues to make, a huge come back in the US. One of America's first spirits, rye whisky is made throughout the country. Few, however, produce a 100% rye whisky, and that's where Catoctin Creek comes in. Listen in as Becky and Scott Harris discuss their processes, the wood experiments (that sounds naughty), and as they talk, too, about the ongoing tariffs and trade war that may or may not affect, not just American whisk(e)y sales into the EU (a burgeoning business for many American whisk(e)y producers), but the distilleries and families that work at these distilleries.

Our second live podcast recording! This time around we're in New York City at the 7th annual Whisky Jewbilee. The boys, in front of an audience of 40 people, have a conversation with Justin Fornal and Chad Anderson (two of the three swimmers of The Great Islay Swim), and Simon Brooking (remember him from Season 2, Episode 7?) of Beam Suntory. It's amazing to think that Joshua and Jason, being so far along in this podcasting journey, have not done much to broach the subject of blending. Well, all that changes as of today, good listener!
The boys have a fun mobile studio recording event with the one and only Ollie Chilton of Elixir Distillers. (Yes, they interviewed Ollie while driving. No, it wasn't very smart.) It may be fair to say that Joshua and Jason know their way around whisky be it Scotch, American, or otherwise. When it comes to mezcal, well, it's no secret that they, like many people, could use a primer, a 101, if you will, in agave spirits.

There are a handful of people in the whisky world that not only become the face of brand(s) they represent but become the face of the industry as a whole. Simon Brooking is one of these good people. When it comes to his own brands; Ardmore, Auchentoshen, Bowmore, Glen Garioch, and Laphroaig, well, one can not think of the brand without Simon's face coming to their mind. For us, we can't think of the whisky industry without Simon being a part of that mental picture. We had a great conversation with Simon Brooking and we want to share it with you, the listener.

Also revealed are the details of our collaborative bottling with Hello From The Magic Tavern - "Stones of Stenness" 13yo PX sherry cask, distilled at an Orkney distillery and bottled exclusively for The Vermillion Minotaur (the fictitious bar located in the fantastical, magical world of Foon).

Season 2, Episode 2... perhaps our whisky-geekiest episode yet! Joshua and Jason sat down for a little over an hour with David Stirk to talk about (the evils of) caramel coloring, selecting casks, the potential for a whisky bust, and even a few good dick jokes. Stirk also goes into detail as to how casks get into the blending and brokering system. Laughter and geeky conversation was had. We trust you'll enjoy this conversation as much as Joshua and Jason did.

One last "from the roadside of Scotland" podcast for you which, we feel, is the perfect way to start Season 2 of One Nation Under Whisky. On our Season 2 opener we welcome Graham Coull, Distillery Manager, and Iain Allan, Visitor Centre manager, of the wonderful Glen Moray distillery. Among a good many things discussed, Graham talks about how growing sales can and do affect your warehousing space (and how to account for that), and Iain talks to us a bit about why Glen Moray is so damn good matured in ex-port casks. The misconceptions part at the end will give you a good chuckle, too.

Joshua and Jason put forth a challenge to you, the listener(s). They asked "please send in a question for a future episode and we'll see what we can do about answering said question". You, dear listener(s), rose to the challenge in a most wonderful way. You've peppered the boys with more questions than they ever expected. So many, in fact, that not all could be covered in under 2 hours. Heck, not all would have been covered in 4 hours. Still, we hope you enjoy this, our longest episode to date, at 2hrs and 10min. Thanks for being devoted listeners!

When driving 'round Scotland on your way to Campbeltown what would you do to pass the time? Why, record a podcast that's what! And if that weren't enough fun, you can do what Joshua and Jason did and stop at Glen Scotia distillery to have a chat and cask selection with their wonderful distillery manager, Iain McAlister. Amazing management, fermenting, distilling, and cask maturation skills aside, Iain is one of the finer gents you'll ever meet and the boys had a great time getting geeky with him.

How better to get an insight into Balcones single malt whisky than to talk to one of the distillery's own distillers: Zack Pilgrim? During 2017's Whisky Jewbilee week in Chicago, Joshua spoke with Zack at an American Single Malt Commission event at Warehouse Liquors about Balcones, their processes, and whiskies. Insight was gathered and is now shared. During this episode, you'll also get to hear Joshua and Jason talk about the potential future of the definition of American Single Malt. The conversation is full of wonderful assumptions and conjecture!

You know the Joshua and Jason like to "back it up" a little bit, right? What better way to kick off the new year than to look back at the highlights of the previous year? Listen in as the boys discuss their favorite podcasting moments of 2017. Add to this, the boys will take you through the cask selection process for two new whiskies set be to released in early 2018. And if that weren't enough, Joshua and Jason share with you their favorite whiskies tasted in 2017.

During his time at Maltstock in The Netherlands Joshua had a nice little sit down with world renown whisky writer, the one and only, Mr. Hans Offringa. Aside from a long conversation about Frank Zappa, the two gents discussed whisky, food, writing, whisky writers, beer, and much, much more. Joshua and Jason then tease out that conversation a bit for you. You will not want to miss this episode - the final one for 2017!

Spending 3.5 to 4 hours with Eddie Russell, drinking bourbon, selecting casks, and sitting down for a long format interview? It's not a bad way to spend a Friday afternoon! During their conversation Eddie talks about designing special releases, his love for Wild Turkey "Cheesy Gold Foil," and the passing of the Wild Turkey familial heritage torch from his dad, to him, and down to his son, Bruce. All this conversation was had over a glass of 1977 8yo 101 bourbon. Again, not a bad way to spend a Friday afternoon!

Whisky Jewbilee Chicago 2017 is now at a close and the boys discuss its many successes. Aside from talking to one another, featured in this episode are interviews with Chris Riesbeck of Westland, Allison Parc of Brenne, Steven Randals of Hyde Irish WhiskEy, some fine Jewbilee attendees, and we hear from Steph Ridgeway and Malcolm Waring of Old Pulteney. After coming off the high that was Whisky Jewbile Chicago 2017, we can't wait for our Seattle Jewbilee on March 15, 2018 - we hope you'll join us!

It's not every day that one gets to interview one of their heroes. However, that day did happen and you get to hear the results. Garth Ennis, creator of Preacher (now a smash hit TV show on AMC), The Boys, Crossed, Hitman, and more, and also seasoned writer for The Punisher, Judge Dredd, Hellblazer, and so many others, joins Joshua and Jason today to discuss the aforementioned 30 year career writing comics but also the boys find a deep connection between comics and whisky. Nearly everyone in the whisky industry is, as we like to say, worth their weight in whisky. It really is an industry full of mensches. Within this community there are a few people that stand out from the crowd and really make an impact, not just on consumers, but on or in every tier of the whisky-selling world. Robin Robinson is one of these people. A man among men, and a teacher unlike any other in the whisky world. It was an honor to sit down and learn from him.

As if special/personalized treatment at Caol Ila wasn't cool enough, just a few miles away, Jim McEwan sets aside some time for us to show us the Ardnahoe Distillery site, and gives us an amazing tasting (thanks be to the wonderful Bryony Boyd for the hook up), and provides us with an interesting take on misconceptions.
Finally our swimmers successfully complete their 8 day swim around Islay and Jackie Thomson gives us and our swimmers the most royal of treatments.

We're finally on Islay, good people! And guess what? We spent so much time on Islay, and at great distilleries, and with wonderful distillery people, that we have to split the episodes up a bit. On today's episode you'll enjoy hearing, well, mostly from Joshua and Jason, but also from their good friends: The Islay Swimmers, Iain McArthur, aka "Pinky," from Lagavulin distillery, and James Wills of Kilchoman makes a bit of a return, too!

Happy to have Jason back from his million day trip to Scotland, Joshua, and the aforementioned Scot, discuss the very start of thier Islay Tour/Great Islay Swim adventure!
You see, there are some movies that have a great prequel. It's true! This is our prequel to our Islay trip and the discovery of the inaugural West Coast Whisky Feis in Oban, Scotland. We talk with Chris Hoban of Raasay Distillery, Ricky Clark of Ardnamurchan, and James Galbraith (one of the organizers of the West Coast Whisky Feis).

A slightly irregular episode: Joshua finds himself all alone as Jason remains in Scotland to spend time with his family. What does Joshua do when left to his own devices? Release some audio footage (Hmmm, is there such a thing as audio "footage"? There is now!) from a cask selection session that he and Jason recorded back in April.
You, dear lucky listener, get a peek behind the curtain into Joshua and Jason's cask selection process. Also, newsflash, John Glenn did not walk on the moon.

What do you get when you mix two guys from the world famous Explorer's Club, a love for Scotland, and Islay, and whisky? A crazy idea to swim around the island of Islay, that's what! Too often pronounced as "Iss-lay," or "Eye-Lay," Scotland's wonderful whisky island, Islay (actually pronounced "Eye-Lah"), is about to have two crazy American adventure swimmers give it a big 'ol swimmy hug!
Listen in as the boys talk with Chad Anderson and Justin Fornal (aka Baron Ambrosia, yes, THE Baron Ambrosia) about their plans to undertake the 100 mile swim around the island of Islay (aka The Great Islay Swim)
Because Joshua and Jason believe in these boys as much as they do, they decided to sponsor their entire trip, which includes their film crew, and have designed a 7 person party WhiskyGeek Tour to follow them along the way. We're not sure which group is more crazy!

Twelve years into distilling, maturing, and filling bottles with delicious Islay whisky, Kilchoman has found its groove. Known as Islay's Farm Distillery, Kilchoman is producing whisky much in the way the Scots did more than 100 years ago; all by hand, all without computers, all on a farm.
Listen in as Joshua has a conversation with Kilchoman's very own James Wills. The conversation is great, the boys get nerdy over Kilchoman's process. They discuss how supply chains can be established and held through a gentlemen's agreement, and both of them enjoy a small-child sized, 12 egg omelet.

At six years into this "running-a-whisky-festival" thing, you'd think Joshua and Jason have seen all they can see, and done all they could do at one of their Whisky Jewbilee events. The answer, however, is not as easy as that. The boys are always learning, always looking to improve, always hoping to make both the attendee and exhibitor experience better.
Listen in as Joshua and Jason do a postmortem of Whisky Jewbilee NYC 2017. And, so as not to bore you with their constant blathering on, they've included some really interesting interviews from the Jewbilee: you'll get to hear from the likes of Ajay Bhoja (Paul John - John Distillery), David McNicoll (Brockman's Gin), Chad Robinson (Catoctin Creek), Ben Paluba (Beastmaster's Club), and more!

Getting your whisk(e)y geek on can be a ton of fun. Joshua and Jason are not quite sure it gets any more fun or geeky than a good conversation with Matt Hofmann of Westland Distillery. Whisk(e)y geekery to the side, Matt has more passion in him than most and more talent than you can shake a stick at. He's good people.

And on the eight episode, Joshua and Jason have a delightful and informative conversation with Heaven Hill Distilleries' own VP of Operations, Mr. Denny Potter...
Denny Potter is an absolutely fascinating gent who had a lot of knowledge to share with the boys. Joshua and Jason sure learned (or learnt, as Jason would say) a lot from Mr. Potter, and the boys share this knowledge with you, the listener.

**Spoiler alert** No one is bit by a spider or has crash landed here from their home planet of Krypton, however, all three of these gentlemen were bitten by the whisky bug!

Richard Urquhart is a 4th generation Urquhart in the Gordon & MacPhail company. Gordon & MacPhail, whose products are ubiquitous when it comes to a good whisky shop's shelves, is perhaps the most iconic Scottish independent bottler in business today. Together, with the help of Richard Urquhart, Joshua and Jason solve the world's problems and lay out plans for world peace.
Well, maybe not. However, the conversation is great, and we get to learn all about Gordon & MacPhail straight from one of the founding family's members!

Who knew spending time with a bourbon legend could be so amazing? (rhetorical question, really.) April 4 found Joshua and Jason in the company of the one and only Eddie Russell of Wild Turkey Fame. Eddie, now 36 years into his life with the distillery, spent a disproportionate amount of his time with the Joshua and Jason (more time than they could have hoped for). Together the boys selected two casks of Wild Turkey Bourbon for Single Cask Nation and have a great in-depth conversation with Eddie.

Episode four point five of One Nation Under Whisky podcast is here - who knew there'd be a partial and surprise episode on April 2, 2017? Well, we did, that's who. Bucking this new trend of releasing an episode every other Wednesday, we just *had* to clue you in on a portion of our conversation with Matt Hofmann (Master Distiller) and Steve Hawley (Maniacal Marketing Marauder) from Westland Distillery. That portion? Boldsmooth, the latest innovation in whisky ridiculous tomfoolery!
Happy April Fools Day, one day after!

Episode four of One Nation Under Whisky podcast is alive! Now with an established release schedule in place, every other Wednesday, Joshua and Jason have a sit down with Mark Watt, General Manager (aka Supreme Leader) of Wm Cadenhead's.
The boys discuss how to manage 30+ whisky markets, Jason is told he asked a great question (and Mark was NOT paid to tell him that, promise), Mark tells the boys all about a 50+ year old Jamaican rum that's been in their warehouse and why it's not yet been bottled, and Mark brings up a *great* misconception!
Sure, more is discussed but wouldn't it be better to hear all about it rather than read all about it?

Episode three of One Nation Under Whisky podcast is here! Now with an established release schedule in place, every other Wednesday, Joshua and Jason discuss the 2nd annual Whisky Jewbilee Seattle and have conversations with; Matt Hofmann (Westland Distillery, Master Distiller), Jessica Lomas (Scotch Whisky Auctions, Queen of the Boxes), and Jeff Kanof (Copperworks Distilling Company, Vice President).
How hard is it to create a solid, respectable blend? Can we find "carrot" as a tasting note in our whisky? Is this episodes' "misconception" more of a chance for Joshua to grind his gears? Listen in to find out!

In our second episode of One Nation Under Whisky, Joshua and Jason get a little long in the tooth as they have a fine discussion about some serious whisky and rum geekery! The boys also discuss some misconceptions around age and are excited to share details regarding a July 2017 Islay tour that WhiskyGeek Tours is putting together in conjunction with The Explorer's Club and National Geographic.

In the first episode of One Nation Under Whisky, Joshua and Jason give you a idea as what to expect with the podcast, update you on news with both Single Cask Nation releases, and Whisky Jewbilee events. The gents also have a sit down with David Stirk of Creative Whisky Company to discuss his career as an Independent Bottler of The Exclusive Malts. Finally, Joshua, Jason, and David discuss a few of the more common misconceptions regarding Independent Bottlings. Fun!
