This is the podcast about movies, video games, and the sparks that fly when those worlds collide. Each week, we’ll be watching a movie and then playing the game based on that movie to see how these disparate media contradict or complement each other.
The podcast CinemArcade is created by cinemarcadepodcast. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Grab your hankies and get ready to fly into the rollicking adventure of UP! Disney/Pixar's 2009 classic has become one of the most revered modern animated films, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, but a highly emotional animated film starring an 80-year-old hero wasn't always the easiest sell. We're covering the film and the game adaptations! There are several different versions of this game, and well... we played the wrong one.

Forget PLAN 9 and THE ROOM and TROLL 2; when it comes to the worst movie ever made, MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE stands alone. This week is all about the insane true story of the "worst film ever made," a film that went from an obscure West Texas curio to a canonical film thanks to its coverage on "Mystery Science Theater 3000." We're talking all about the movie, the show, and the long-belated 2012 video game based on the film, which also serves as a tribute to a lost era of great-bad movies.

Oh what a lovely day! Today we're riding eternal, shiny and chrome into Valhalla with MAD MAX: FURY ROAD! This jaw-dropping 2015 masterpiece is one of the most technically accomplished and fully-realized visions of the last decade, but it had a long and, dare I say, furious road to conception. We cover some of the tumultuous behind-the-scenes stories behind the film, before getting behind the wheel ourselves for the massive open-world adventure MAD MAX for PS4, which borrows elements from the entire series.

Rev up your Interceptor and get ready for a wild ride across the wasteland as we let loose with the first of our two-part retrospective on MAD MAX! This Australian indie film took the world by storm, becoming a surprise worldwide hit and ushering in a wave of post-apocalyptic knock-offs. While the 1979 original film doesn't much resemble the operatic madness that the series would embrace, it's still an important and captivating thriller overflowing with talent. We're talking about the film before checking out the 1990 NES game adaptation, which may be ahead of it's time in some of its clever (and punishing) ideas.

A thriller? A comedy? Nope; apparently, 1990's ARACHNOPHOBIA is a "thrill-omedy." Whatever you may make of that branding, there's no denying that Frank Marshall's slick, funny monster movie is wildly entertaining, and, for at least one of our co-hosts, almost unbearably scary. We'll dig into this creepy-crawly cult classic before dusting off the lost 1991 home PC game, a side-scrolling shooter and our THIRD game starring John Goodman.

Our STAR WARS saga concludes, at least for now, with RETURN OF THE JEDI, the 1983 classic that remains a little divisive amongst older fans. Kenny Madison of the Trek Wars podcast joins us to talk all things Jabba, Ewok, and uncomfortable gold bikini. Then, we're looking at three games, including the Atari 2600 jam DEATH STAR BATTLE, the 1984 isometric arcade game, and the conclusion of the SUPER STAR WARS trilogy!

We've arrived the darkest chapter of our STAR WARS trilogy, and almost inarguably the best: 1980's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK! Originally criticized for being too serious and too heavy, time has been kind to EMPIRE, which is now seen as one of the canonical great American sci-fi films. We're discussing the movie with our good friend Katarin Nunez, then we're climbing onto our tauntauns for three EMPIRE games for Atari, NES, and SNES!

How do we even begin to talk about STAR WARS? The massive, life-altering, cinema-changing, genre-defying epic masterpiece has gone beyond a mere fandom: it's an entire economy, an obsession, even a religion. We're going to attempt to capture all of our complex feelings about the series over the next three weeks, and we're starting with the original 1977 classic, STAR WARS! The great Tate Chitwood joins us as we nerd out over the George Lucas film and several of it's game adaptations, including SUPER STAR WARS!

This timeless family gem has endured for close to a century now thanks to it's memorable songs, vibrant colors, and surprisingly dark undertone, and the smash success of WICKED has cast it back into the zeitgeist. We're joined by our buddy, the whip-smart Marissa Stubbe, to revisit the film, and check out it's deeply bizarre, oddly compelling 1993 SNES adaptation.

Happy holidays everyone! We're celebrating the occasion by unwrapping that perennial Christmas favorite, RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER! This Rankin/Bass animated special from 1964 is the longest continually-airing TV special in history, so we made an exception from our film-heavy format to let Rudolph, Hermey, Yukon Cornelius and the gang make an appearance. The CARS series dumps the spy comedy in favor of a down-to-earth, weirdly poignant final entry, CARS 3! This 2017 film was largely overlooked and is one of Pixar's lowest-grossing films, but it has some interesting things to say and some of the most beautiful animation in the series to date. We're checking out the movie before playing CARS 3: DRIVEN TO WIN, which expands on the fun ideas of the CARS 2 game into a quiet banger of a racing game.

It certainly has with our guest, certified CARS 2 superfan Hannah Mattes, who joins us to debate the finer points of this detour from the CARS formula. This week we're checking out the 2001 Disney adventure ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE! We're kicking off a full month of horror movies and games, and we're starting with an absolute banger: John Carpenter's THE THING! Carpenter's film was looked at as a career killer when it debuted in 1982, but it's grown in estimation over the years and is now considered one of the canonical great horror films. Austin improv great Mickey May joins us as we take a deep-dive into 1980 classic and it's sequels, before diving in to two of our most notable game adaptations yet: the infamous 1989 NES version, and the not-long-for-this-world 2017 asymmetrical slasher!

The JUMANJI franchise came roaring back to theaters in a big way with 2017's surprise smash JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE! Starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillen as teenagers trapped in a video game, this fun and lighthearted romp became a runaway box office sensation, even with stiff competition from a STAR WARS movie. We're talking about the 2017 film as well as it's 2019 adaptation, JUMANJI: THE VIDEO GAME, which weirdly eschews the obvious path for an adaptation and instead becomes a co-op capture-the-flag shooter.

Akira Kurosawa's 1954 masterpiece SEVEN SAMURAI is maybe the defining film of Japanese cinema, a sprawling adventure epic that has influenced almost every action movie since. It's a momentous achievement, but how do you meet up to that standard with a video game? SEVEN SAMURAI 20XX attempts to tackle the original by not tackling it, moving the action to the distant future and using the film as a very loose template.

The furry fighter and his robot pal debuted with a classic game on the PS2 and have built a high-quality series of hit action platformers. The 2016 film adaptation tried to capture some of the game's cartoonish wit and space opera thrills, but it's the 2016 RATCHET & CLANK game (both a remake of the original and an adaptation of the film, which is an adaptation of the original game, which... my nose is bleeding) that really gets it right.

This week we're talking all about the surprising phenomenon that was BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA from 1992! Francis Ford Coppola's rendition of the classic DRACULA tale is one of the weirdest, most operatic horror films of the 90s. It's a film aimed at grown-ups that, despite it's flashy style, doesn't really translate to a video game format. But that didn't stop them from trying; the BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA game fundamentally misunderstands the source material by making it an action-adventure game starring Keanu Reeves' character. We're talking E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking smash hit, as well as it's Atari 2600 tie-in, which people wanted to smash and hit and literally broke ground to get rid of it! See what we did there?
