Hollywood has, for better or worse, had a longstanding tradition of adapting everything under the sun into a film. We've seen books and plays adapted to the big screen and, as we've entered the modern era, seen the same treatment offered to graphic novels and comic books, too. We've even seen fringe items like toys successfully adapted with The LEGO Movie and Trolls. Nevertheless, there's been one genre that hasn't been able to rise above the fray: video games. While films about video games — think Wreck-it Ralph or Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle — have performed well, for whatever reason, adaptations of existing franchises simply have not been good or successful. In this episode, we take a look at some of the worst offenders. We're not talking about those; we're talking about would-be franchises where a film was left wide-open for a sequel, and it completely tanked. No sequel for you, because your movie sucked! At the turn of the century, approximately 350 major releases were issued into theaters. By 2013, that number had almost doubled. In fact, 51 more films were produced and released between 2012 and 2013 alone. As you can imagine, it'd be easy to get lost in that sea of celluloid. Whether it's because of the increasingly stiff competition, a film simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or whatever the case may be, there are any number of reasons a film might go unnoticed or under-appreciated. The Last Jedi reached heights of critical acclaim, was the highest grossing film of 2017, and landed only behind its predecessor on many lists, such as biggest opening weekend. While many fans enjoyed the film, for a significant amount, the film didn't meet their expectations. Most went about voicing their displeasure calmly and rationally. Peter Parker and Mary Jane seem to finally be on the right track in their complicated relationship, but trouble looms for the superhero and his lover. Peter's Spider-Man suit turns black and takes control of him, not only giving Peter enhanced power but also bringing out the dark side of his personality. Peter must overcome the suit's influence as two supervillains, Sandman and Venom, rise up to destroy him and all those he holds dear. Overcrowded with too many villains, the forced inclusion of Venom, and storylines that ultimately are a disservice to those that inspired them, Spider-Man 3 is ultimately two halves that don't add up to a compelling whole. When a failed nuclear fusion experiment results in an explosion that kills his wife, Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed into Dr. Octopus, a cyborg with deadly metal tentacles. Doc Ock blames Spider-Man for the accident and seeks revenge. Meanwhile, Spidey's alter ego, Peter Parker, faces fading powers and self-doubt. Complicating matters are his best friend's hatred for Spider-Man and his true love's sudden engagement to another man. Continuing where Spider-Man left off, we discuss our contrasting view with the majority of critics and fans who hold this sequel at the highest regard to the Raimi trilogy. While there were things that worked, there were a number of things that fell short for us — including the odd decision to make Octavius' signature metal arms hiss. We've all done it : you've seen the movie a hundred times — you probably even own it — but you're sucked and find yourself watching anyway. Then, you notice something, well…different. When you get to a particular line or scene, you notice something is off. You know that the line being said will be edited, but the way it's done isn't just noticeable, it's laughably bad. After that, it's a discussion about a classic episode of Futurama, Season 4's Three Hundred Big Boys. Inspired by the classic Simpson's episode, 22 Short Films About Springfield, Three Hundred Big Boys is constructed as a series of loosely-connected vignettes that coalesce at the climax of the episode. The looser structure allows for jokes that fly a mile-a-minute, and easily makes an argument for any Top Ten Futurama list, if not a solid argument that this episode surpasses its inspiration.
