Reviews, reflections, and break downs of some of the most influential movies ever made. We give our modern perspective on the role classic cinema plays in society, and how it moves the “old soul” in all of us.
The podcast The Old Soul Movie Podcast is created by Emma Oremus. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
We are joined by Vincent Casaregola, Ph.D. of St. Louis University to discuss one of the most groundbreaking movements in cinematic history: The New Hollywood. We've all heard of Old Hollywood, but what is THIS time period about? In the mid 1960s through early 1980s, a new generation of filmmakers emerged, challenging the old studio system and pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. This era captured great creativity and innovation, producing some of the most iconic and influential films ever made. Between new business models, auteur directors, and parameters of freedom, moviegoers were able to experience a different kind of storytelling that hadn't quite been seen like this before. Dr. Casaregola walks us through the landscape of movies and competing television programming, changes in the business world and social movements, key figures making their way to the silver screen, prominent content of these films, and SO MUCH MORE! Tune in to understand the legacy of this historical period.
*Hi everyone! So, Emma had a tiny tech hiccup during recording (her mic decided to play hide-and-seek with the connection, the little rascal!). This means the sound quality might be a tad bit different than usual. We've done our best to clean it up, but please forgive any less-than-perfect moments. We promise the content is still worth a listen, and we're sending you all extra virtual hugs for your understanding! We'll be back to crystal-clear sound next time, promise :)

Happy Autumn! We are ready for all things creepy, kooky, thrilling, and chilling this season...and what better way to kick it off than covering a horror story classic: Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! For this special episode, we are joined by Westmore family historian and great granddaughter of Ern Westmore: Christiana Benson. Christiana walks us through the techniques Wally Westmore used in special effects makeup to transform goodhearted doctor Dr. Jekyll into his evil persona Mr. Hyde. We dissect our favorite scenes, brilliant acting by Fredric March and fellow cast members, and deeper meanings of this allegorical tale. Happy Spring! What better way to kick off a new season of Old Soul than by covering one of the most beloved children's movies of all time? That's right, we're hopping aboard our fine, four-fendered friend to a magical world of zany inventions, storytelling, and Vulgarian oddities. Caractacus Potts (although we do get wild with variations of his name pronunciation lol) is a down-on-his-luck single father of two little ones who become enamored with a retired (and quite broken down) champion race car. With the help of candy heiress Truly Scrumptious, this family finds fun and adventure in hopping between reality and dreams. We loved getting into the background of this wondrous tale (did you know it has ties to James Bond??) and what the landscape of movie musicals looked like in this era of Old Hollywood. Tune in to join us for the ride of a lifetime!

Ho ho ho and Merry Christmas Old Soul Movie Podcast Family! Today we are celebrating two beloved classics from Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment- a team that brought beloved holiday characters to life predominately throughout the 1960s-1980s. These films have been part of American families' celebration of the seasons for decades and we are excited to pay tribute to their legacy! First, we meet a young buck named Rudolph, whose "nonconformity" brings him on a journey from outcast to foggy-weathered hero. Next, we meet Frosty, a lively man made of snow who must get to the North Pole before he melts away! The moviegoing sensation that's taken over the nation has arrived...Barbenheimer. On July 21st, two of the most anticipated films of the year were released on the same day: Greta Gerwig's Barbie (2023) and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023). Two of the most innovative directors of our time lead two incredible teams of cast and crew (both backed by husband-wife production companies) to deliver unforgettable viewing experiences. While these aren't Old Hollywood films, the two figures at the center of both stories emerged in time periods we frequently discuss, and it's amazing to see the public reexamine them now! Emma and Jack discuss their their Barbenheimer impressions-- the order they watched them in, the logistics of watching them, first impressions, and more. Let us know your thoughts and feelings to THE summer theater event!

And weeeeeeee'lllllllllllllllll always love Frank Farmer!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Valentine's Day Old Soul Family! We cover the iconic 90s movie The Bodyguard (1992). Kevin Costner takes the reins as a leading man alongside Whitney Houston in her very first acting role! Lawrence Kasdan initially dreamed of this movie being made in the 1970s. Through twists and turns, much like the suspense this movie offers, it came to fruition at exactly the right time. Join us in the love as we discuss our favorite scenes and songs of this modern-age classic. We have nothing if we don't have Frank and Rachel together <3
Happy Ja-noir-y Old Soul Family! We are kicking off the New Year by visiting an Old Hollywood favorite...Double Indemnity (1944)! This sordid tale was unlike any other in its day. Between themes of murderous schemes (from the murderer's perspective), sexual temptation, and manipulation, this film set the gold standard of noir entertainment...all while pushing the production code guidelines. We revisit an old favorite topic of the PCA and how Double Indemnity (1944) marked a turning point in classic movies. The prolific Billy Wilder's first thriller is one you can never forget. So create an alibi and come conspire with us as we spy into the lives of Walter Neff, Keyes, and the Dietrichsons...

Obsession, mystery, and MURDER - all of these themes and more are covered in our latest episode: Laura (1944)! In Otto Preminger's classic noir, we uncover the drama behind-the-scenes and analyze how the story's onscreen tangled webs of truths and mistruths unfold. We are so excited to celebrate this Noirvember winner with you before the holidays!
And for those of you curious as to the origin of the Gene Tierney quote about her beauty, this reference was taken from a trivia note on IMDB :
"According to his daughter Victoria, Vincent Price felt that Gene Tierney had as much to do with this movie's success as Producer and Director Otto Preminger's direction: 'In his opinion, it was Gene Tierney's 'odd beauty' and underrated acting ability that made 'Laura' so popular', she said. 'He felt her beauty was both timeless and imperfect.'"
...so it was Vincent Price who made that reference-mystery solved!
Happy Fall Old Soul Family! In this week's episode we explore The Night of the Hunter (1955) - a critical and commercial failure when it was released but has now been appraised as one of the greatest films ever made. In Charles Laughton's one and only directed film, Robert Mitchum a nightmare-provoking spooktacular performance that will chill you to the bone! Let us know your thoughts on social media!

We're taking a spontaneous trip to Bodega Bay! Ahhhh fresh sea air, idyllic farms, friendly townsfolk...what could go wrong? That's right, we're covering an Old Hollywood classic: The Birds (1963)! Tippi Hedren captivates us as a San Fransisco socialite who follows a charming lawyer (and perfect stranger) to his childhood home, but soon finds herself to be the target of avian aggressors. We soar in and out of theories as to what this mysterious Hitchcockian movie means and why it's considered a significant feature. Pack your bags (or just pick up some things at the general store) and tune in for this creepy summer horror story!

Bring some snacks and buckle up because we're hittin' the road with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz! That's right, we're covering a quintessential summer classic: The Long, Long Trailer (1954)! A newlywed couple decides to take their honeymoon on a trip across the western country in a new mobile home...only for it to become a pretty "rocky" adventure. We touch upon how the "I Love Lucy" comedians conquered the big screen, why the road movie genre is a recipe for success, and what we love about tiny houses/school bus renovations. This sweet comedy ~"wheel"~ have you rolling with laughter!

We're back, Old Soul family! And we are covering an audience recommendation of a classic novel adaptation: David Copperfield! One of Charles Dickens's own favorite characters, the story of young David is a coming-of-age tale with lovable (and hate-able) characters that influence his life in becoming an aspiring author. This movie came to be out of producer David O. Selznick's love and devotion to his own father...and much to the opposition of his father-in-law (who was head of the studio)! We loved giving our first impressions on a story that has been on many people's bookshelves for over a century!

Talk to me, Goose. During this holiday weekend we are discussing an American classic: Top Gun (1986)! We jump into all the behind-the-scenes and complex debates of this movie as well addressing the military-entertainment complex. And how could we not touch upon the smash hit sequel that came out this year? Top Gun: Maverick (2022)! We share all of our thoughts on this brand new film about second chances that's sweeping the hearts of audiences all over the nation (and spoiler alert - Emma may or may not have applauded this movie at the end in the theater). We can't wait to take flight with this pop culture phenomenon!

Around Fathers' Day, we are celebrating with a tale of paternal misadventures: Life with Father (1947)! In this Michael Curtiz classic, we watch the redheaded Day family navigate entertaining out-of-town guests (including Mary Skinner played by a young Elizabeth Taylor!), recruiting household employees (which usually ends in failure), being scammed into a sales scheme, and the biggest issue of all... convincing their husband/father to get baptized so he can potentially join them in the "kingdom of God." In this episode, we learn about what it means to be baptized and also what our own unbaptized Ben thinks at the end of the episode! With both silly and tender moments, this movie is sure to touch your heart. Let us know your favorite movie about fatherly devotion!

Hear ye, hear ye! We are celebrating a member of the Old Soul community's birthday by watching Camelot (1967)! In this fabulous musical, we learn about the story of King Arthur, Lady Guenevere, and Sir Lancelot: a classic love triangle that could change the fate of a kingdom. With such a fabulous cast, which includes Richard Harris (before he was Dumbledore!), Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero, we were whisked away to the idyllic land in search for establishing truth and honor. In addition to the story unfolding on the screen, we learn about a heartwarming romance behind the scenes as well as the movie's reflections of America in the 1960s.
This week, we had the privilege of talking with the Westmore family historian and great granddaughter of Ern Westmore: Christiana Benson! The Westmores were some of the most prominent makeup artists of Old Hollywood; they created looks for films such as Gone With the Wind (1939), Casablanca (1942), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1957), and soooooooo much more. Christiana tells us about how patriarch George Westmore established the first Hollywood hair and makeup department in 1917, the talent of his descendants (amounting to four generations of family artists!), and the impact this family had on not just the world of special effects, but how the general public could embrace their own beauty. We are so honored to share the story of their legacy with you!

We are recognizing the 110th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy that occurred in 1912. A Night to Remember (1958) is a critically acclaimed film based off of Walter Lord's book of the same name; it has been noted for its incredible accuracy in detailing the events that lead to this ship's demise. We discuss not only elements of the movie, but the real events that took place on that devastating April night. Although this story is heartbreaking, it also features enormous stories of courage and compassion in the face of adversity. We truly found this film inspiring and hope you'll join us as we recall A Night to Remember (1958).

Bam! Pow! We have a supersized episode for you because we are covering one of our favorite superheroes: Batman!!! Our March Madness winner, Batman (1989), was a pop culture phenomenon that inspired a whole new love for Gotham’s Caped Crusader. AND we are so lucky to be joined by our resident comic book and superhero expert: Ben! Ben walks us through the world of Batman comic storylines and their relationship to on-screen portrayals of the Dark Knight (and to help prep for all Batman trivia needs). We discuss our ideal Bruce Wayne/Batman and Joker characteristics, why we like Batman’s villains so much, our thoughts on the controversial casting, our appreciation for Tim Burton’s vision, and more! We discuss the groundbreaking nature behind these movies, which highlights the focus on Black women's stories. However, these films aren't perfect (and are still very white-centric); in this episode, we critique parts of the writing and rethink how we'd liked to have seen these narratives told in the days of Old Hollywood.

From the beloved Victor Hugo literary classic to the silver screen, this timeless tale of humanity (and all of the passion, cruelty, kindness it contains) has captured hearts throughout centuries. If you're a history buff, in addition to being a film buff, you'll be fascinated to learn how the movie's screenwriters created a metaphor for real-world events leading up to World War II. We're so grateful a listener recommended watching this film (the first time for us!); it's a wonderful way to become more acquainted with Quasimodo's story beyond the 1996 Disney retelling!
