What if everything you thought you knew about your child's meltdowns was wrong?
According to Dr. Caylin Riley, a general pediatrician and mother of 3 highly sensitive children (HSCs), there's a critical piece of the puzzle most parents are missing.
It's called the "highly sensitive" trait.
And it affects a whopping 20% of all kids.
As an HSP (highly sensitive person) herself, Dr. Riley knows firsthand the challenges these unique kids face.
She spent years researching to understand what was making life so hard for her oldest child.
And what she discovered changed everything.
Now, she's on a mission to educate pediatric professionals about this game-changing trait.
So that every child can get the support they need to thrive.

If you're the parent of a highly sensitive child, ineffective behaviors like refusal, shut down, and meltdowns can feel like your daily battleground.
You worry you'll be seen as "those parents" whose child is always having a fit.
You feel guilty that your other kids get less attention because your sensitive child takes all the energy.
And secretly, you may even resent your child at times for hijacking your family's peace and joy.
I want you to know, it's not your fault. And you're not alone in this struggle.
Traditional parenting approaches and discipline simply don't work for highly sensitive children. Their brains are wired differently.
But the good news is, you can eliminate those daily battles and bring more calm to your home.

As a parent of a highly sensitive child, you're already blazing your own trail.
You've rejected the old, harsh discipline methods that you grew up with. Instead, you're committed to raising an emotionally resilient child using positive parenting strategies.
But when Grandma and Grandpa see you comforting your child through a meltdown instead of sending them to their room, the disapproving looks and unsolicited advice can make you second guess yourself.
How do you stay firm in your nontraditional parenting style when facing criticism from the older generation?
Listen in for my 3 principles.

If you’ve got a sensitive, “strong-willed” child who seems to have a meltdown over everything, you might be wondering:
"Is gentle parenting even possible for us?"
You’ve tried being calm, patient, and understanding, but your child still pushes back—hard.
The endless tears, the screaming, the arguments... it’s exhausting.
And when gentle parenting doesn’t seem to work, it’s easy to feel like you’re failing.
But here’s the thing most people don’t understand:
Gentle parenting isn’t just for “gentle kids.”
At the core, it’s for all kids—but the sensitive child needs more structure than just “show compassion and patience.”
The problem?
Sensitive kids don’t respond to the same cookie-cutter advice you’ve probably heard a thousand times.

Imagine having the tools to defuse the emotional bombs before they go off, to communicate in a way your child can actually hear and respond to, to create a home that feels loving and calm instead of chaotic and overwhelming.
Imagine your sensitive child being able to express their big feelings without the screaming, the tears, the all-consuming outbursts. Imagine them building resilience, finding their voice, learning to thrive.
I know it might feel impossible right now. You're exhausted, overwhelmed, maybe even hopeless after trying everything and seeing no change. The parenting books gathering dust on your shelves, the sticker charts and time-outs and "calm down corners" that only seem to make things worse...

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes a flurry of festive parties and family gatherings.
For highly sensitive children, this time of year can be especially challenging. Their vivid imaginations conjure up visions of the perfect celebration, complete with harmonious relatives, dream gifts, and picture-perfect moments.
But when reality falls short of these elaborate expectations (as it often does), sensitive kids can find themselves drowning in disappointment and frustration.
If your child has ever had a meltdown at a holiday party because the gift wasn't quite right or the cousins weren't acting according to plan, you're not alone.
Highly sensitive children feel deeply and imagine thoroughly. They notice every detail and nuance, which can be both a blessing and a curse when navigating the unpredictability of holiday gatherings.
So, what can you do to help your sensitive child cope when their big dreams collide with less-than-perfect realities?

If you're the parent of a highly sensitive child, you've probably tried everything to help them manage their meltdowns.
Breathing exercises, counting to ten, talking it out afterwards... but nothing seems to stick.
It's an endless cycle of reactivity, and it's exhausting for everyone involved.
But here's the thing: it's not your fault, and it's not your child's fault either.
The real problem is that most therapists and parenting strategies focus on reactive care. They wait for a meltdown to happen, then try to slap a band-aid skill on it and hope for the best.
But that's like trying to build a house without a foundation. It might look okay for a minute, but it won't stand up to the first big storm.
If you're ready to build that foundation for your family, register for my latest training, The top 3 mistakes parents make in trying to end the daily meltdown cycle: megghanthompsoncoaching.com/3mistakes
As a parent of a highly sensitive child, it's easy to feel helpless in the face of daily meltdowns and challenging behaviors.
You may wonder, "Is this just who my child is? Am I stuck dealing with this chaos forever?"
I want to offer you a resounding NO. You are not powerless. In fact, you have far more influence over your child's behavior than you may realize.
This week on the podcast, I'm diving deep into the research on family dynamics and the incredible capacity parents have to shape their child's emotional development.

I see you. I know you try so hard every single day to be the parent you know your child needs.
You teach emotional intelligence daily, yet you worry constantly that you're failing your own sensitive child.
Others think you have it all together, but inside you feel like an imposter, wondering how much longer you can keep up this charade.
Dreading the meltdowns, the yelling matches, the constant battles with your child who seems impossible to please.
Holidays like Thanksgiving are supposed to be joyful family times, but for you it's just another day of walking on eggshells, trying to prevent the next explosion.
I see you. I know how hard you're working. And I want you to know, you are your child's hero.

When you have a highly sensitive child, it can feel like you're constantly putting out fires.
The daily meltdowns, the refusal to get dressed for school, the extreme reactions to seemingly small things...
It's exhausting. And often, in the chaos, it's easy to overlook one surprising trigger - visual clutter.
You see, for sensitive children, excess visual stimuli can feel as overwhelming as a room full of people shouting.
Their brains process information deeply, noticing every detail in the environment.
So while a pile of unsorted mail on the kitchen counter may barely register for you, for your sensitive child, it can be a loud, constant distraction that frays their nerves.
This doesn't mean you need to become a die-hard minimalist overnight.
But it does mean that reducing visual clutter is one small change that can make a big impact in lowering your child's stress levels.

Recently, I had a frustrating experience that really drove home for me the importance of integrity and human connection in both business and parenting.
I had purchased a text watch for my highly sensitive child from a well-known company.
When I reached out with a question via email, I quickly realized I was communicating with a human who was using AI to simplify their responses.
The AI responses were contradictory and even chastising in tone as I tried to get a straight answer.
I felt belittled and unheard, all while trying to advocate for my child's needs.
It took me back to a decision I made years ago, when a former mentor suggested I cut labor costs by replacing my master's level team with cheaper, less qualified staff.
Listen to today's episode to hear how this experience applies to teaching your HSC to not be people pleasers.

Imagine this... It's the day after the fall festivities.
Your sensitive child's treat bag is overflowing with candy. They've already had several meltdowns begging for "just one more piece".
You've said no multiple times, but the badgering won't stop.
You're at your wits end, ready to just lock up the candy stash and be done with it.
But you wonder, is that really the best approach?
Will restrictions just make candy even more enticing and lead to sneaking treats later?
I get it.
Food battles with a highly sensitive child can feel like an impossible situation.
Traditional approaches like the "one treat a day" rule or hiding the candy often backfire into more obsession, not less. So what's a weary parent to do?

Imagine your child struggling to walk, falling down constantly at home, but miraculously having perfect coordination in public.
You wouldn't assume they were just stumbling for attention, right?
You'd know they genuinely needed help building that physical skill.
Well, the same is true for emotional skills like regulation and distress tolerance.
Meltdown behaviors at home (hitting, kicking, screaming, refusal, shutting down) are a sign of lagging abilities, not a manipulative bid for attention.

I want to share a powerful story about one of our clients, a mom of two boys one of which was struggling with 2-3 meltdowns per day.
She confided in us that she had been suffering in silence for months, too embarrassed to reach out for help because the meltdowns only happened at home.
She thought since her kids held it together in public, it meant they were doing better than if they melted down in front of others.
But here's the truth: Meltdowns are meltdowns, regardless of where they happen. And parental isolation due to shame is a hidden symptom of the meltdown cycle.

Are you unknowingly making THIS critical mistake in your parenting that could be destroying your marriage?
Many well-meaning parents who practice attachment-focused parenting fall into the trap of coddling their sensitive child.
They save their child from ever experiencing negative emotions.
They always put their child's needs above their own and their spouse's.
They avoid setting any limits, for fear of upsetting their sensitive child.
The result? A co-dependent relationship forms between parent and child...
And the marriage starts to crumble under the strain.

A little tooth sensitivity is easy to brush off. "It's not a big deal," you think.
But beneath the surface, decay is silently eating away at the root.
By the time you're wincing in pain with every bite, that little cavity is now a big, expensive root canal.
Can you imagine parenting like that? Of course you would never neglect your kid’s tooth pain.
Quick question– why are you ignoring your own exhaustion as a parent, treating it like a neglected toothache?
What does this have to do with teaching your child to take responsibility for their actions?
Your sensitive child's daily meltdowns are just like emotional cavities, eroding their resilience at the root.
Fill them now before you're facing an emotional extraction that didn't have to happen.

Let's be real - if your sensitive child is having daily meltdowns, it's a glaring sign they haven't yet developed a resourceful identity.
Resourcefulness is non-negotiable for your child's lifelong success and happiness. It's the key to resilience.
If your child can't creatively solve problems or stay present when upset, they're stuck in the meltdown cycle.
And that cycle won't end on its own.
When they refuse options and meltdown instead of problem-solving, they're telling you they need help rewiring their brain for resilience.
That's exactly what we do in our latest parent training.

As a parent of a highly sensitive child, you know the daily struggle of trying to get your kiddo to open up about their big feelings without triggering a meltdown.
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking:
"My child just won't talk to ME about their emotions. They must need a professional to teach them how to self-regulate."
I get it. When your attempts at emotional coaching lead to more shut down than breakthrough, it's tempting to outsource the job to a therapist.
But here's the truth: YOU are the exact right person to guide your child to emotional mastery. And trying to delegate that role can actually backfire.

When your highly sensitive child (HSC) struggles with transitions, it can feel like you're stuck in an endless loop of negotiations, meltdowns, and frustration.
I know you love your child deeply, but the daily battles over getting out the door, starting homework, or going to bed are sucking the joy out of parenting.
Here's what you need to know: your child isn't giving you a hard time, they're having a hard time. And they need you to be their emotional anchor through the turbulent waters of change.
As a parent of an HSC, your job isn't to simply make your child "obey" or comply with transitions on your timeline.
Your role is to create an environment that honors their unique sensitivities and equips them with the tools to navigate change in a way that feels safe and manageable to their nervous system.

As a parent of a highly sensitive child (HSC), you know how overwhelming and intense their meltdowns can be. Not only for you, but for their siblings too.
It's a common struggle I hear from parents in your shoes:
You're trying to console your HSC and help them through the meltdown, but their siblings keep intervening - either trying to "fix it", giving in to demands, or getting upset themselves.
You want to remove your HSC to a calmer environment, but worry about leaving the other kids alone or making your sensitive child feel isolated and ashamed.
You attempt to set boundaries with the siblings, but in the heat of the moment it's hard to be firm and consistent.
You love all your children and want to be fair, but your HSC's big reactions take up so much bandwidth, the other kids' needs often get backseat.
Here's the truth - trying to juggle everyone's feelings and reactions in the midst of a meltdown is an impossible task. It's not your fault these situations feel unmanageable.
But there is a way to honor your HSC's emotions, without sacrificing your other children's wellbeing. It starts with a plan.

In that moment, you had a choice:
Advocate for your child's needs and emotional reality, even if it means an awkward conversation…
Or stay quiet to avoid judgment or unsolicited parenting advice from others.

If your kid could just handle the regular every day stuff your summer would be much more enjoyable, right?
Maybe it's the splashing sounds at the pool that suddenly overwhelm your child's senses.
Or the booming fireworks that terrify them despite your assurances it will be okay.
Heck, it could even be putting on sunscreen before a fun beach day that sets them off.
In the moment, you rack your brain trying to figure out how to "fix" the situation and talk them down.
You beg, reason, reassure - anything to avoid the public meltdown.
Yet no matter what logical explanations you provide, the emotional storm still rages.

You use intuition all the time without realizing it.
Like when deciding if that plate of food looks appetizing.
Or knowing the coffee you're about to drink will be very hot.
But I see so many parents struggle to trust their intuition with their kids… mainly because they let fear override it.
Your gut tells you something is a good or bad decision.
Then the doubts start creeping in from others' opinions… or the need to be liked… or the need to create convenience… or low self esteem..

Last week, I attended a coaching event with my mastermind group and it became clear to me why many parents struggle with raising sensitive kids.
One business owner (also a mom) at the event was questioning if she belonged there because she was too focused on comparing her accomplishments to everyone else's online success.
But I could see that she was very close to reaching her own goals.
I understand.
As parents, we are constantly measuring ourselves against an unrealistic or unknown standard, whether it's another mom who seems to have everything figured out or just an unattainable ideal of perfection.

Your sensitive child freezes in frustration, don't they?
Schoolwork, chores, friendships - the second things get tough, they quit.
As their parent, witnessing their lack of resilience breaks your heart.
You know deep down that if they could move through discomfort, amazing things would happen.
Yet every time you try coaching them, every time you encourage perseverance...
You get met with tears, tantrums, and complete shutdown from your discouraged child.
Your frustration boils over in those heated moments despite your best intentions.
You revert to criticizing, yelling, or simply giving up yourself out of sheer exasperation.
After all, you feel like you can't be calm and lead with compassion when they won’t listen.

If it feels like your HSC is down in the dumps more than the average kid,
You’ll want to hear this.
You are not alone.
Our client Savannah knows exactly how that feels, and that feeling was HARD to work through.
Savannah’s story is common for parents who are stuck in the meltdown cycle.
She wanted to be a mom for such a long time,
And the fact that her child seemed melancholy SO often was disheartening.
She describes her HSC as feeling upset and on edge constantly,
Crying often,
And even stated that there was a lack of connection.
She felt like no matter how much her and Alan tried,
They could not meet their HSC’s needs.
She also felt like she could not help her child in the midst of a meltdown.
And that was really discouraging.
In Savannah’s words, “I felt helpless. I was failing myself and my daughter.”
So how did this family break out of the meltdown cycle with MTC’s help?
Tune in to hear Savannah’s story.

I was recently interviewed by Miriam Fernández, Co-founder & Co-director
Nirakara Mindfulness Institute, located in Spain.
I had a lot of fun exploring The Science of Highly Sensitive Children ("La ciencia de los niños altamente sensibles").
We shed light on the history behind the study of sensitivity and provide valuable insights on how to support and nurture these extraordinary children.
Please note that while the interview is spoken in English, the video has been transcribed in Spanish, ensuring that language will not be a barrier to accessing this valuable information.
I encourage you to listen!

Have you ever stopped to consider why time-outs might be ineffective?
I get that your kid’s pediatrician, therapist or school counselor probably recommended this tactic, or maybe you remember it “working” for you as a kid…
But let’s face it– time-outs just don’t work for your sensitive kid.
Why?
Because it is an outdated practice that is simply not based in brain science AT ALL.
With all the noise out there on parenting, I totally get that you may have felt like you can rely on a basic old school tactic that wasn’t as harmful as spanking..
And, time-outs expect a level of self-control that isn’t effective.

You love your sensitive child with all your heart.
But the daily tidal wave of tears, tantrums, and meltdowns leaves you feeling drained and defeated.
No matter how patiently you respond, your child shuts down at the smallest frustration.
You want to help them thrive, but don't know where to start.
This is not for lack of trying that you’re locked in a daily battle of wills with a child who seems wired to overreact.
The judgmental glares, the well-meaning but useless advice from others, the isolation you feel - it cuts deep.

Wondering what’s normal for sensitive kids?
When your child faces frequent outbursts and emotional turmoil, they are grappling with overwhelming emotions beyond their control.
They feel disoriented, confused, and burdened by these INTENSE FEELINGS.
And when they lack effective strategies to process and express their emotions, they explode.
And guess what?
This is not a phase they will outgrow.

Ever wonder whether this temperament trait can be proven in research?
I get it, you want an answer about why your child is struggling significantly, WITHOUT labeling them unduly…
AND make sure you’re covering all of your bases and not missing a serious biological cause for your child’s distress.
In your research you may have come across the traditional belief or advice that treats your child’s intense meltdowns as diagnosable anxiety, or a developmental delay, or some other pop psychology fad trend.
And yet, you know you (and your spouse/co-parent) arent’ on the same page, you’re reactive when you're not at your best and yelling or throwing your hands up, walking on eggshells…
and you know this is part of the problem.
Today’s message is short, because I am imploring you to save the time to watch this week’s podcast.

Are your sensitive child's school days filled with distress and challenges?
Considering homeschooling as the only way to solve this problem?
You undoubtedly want your child’s education to cultivate potential, not erode self-esteem, yet…
Seeing them drowning in overwhelm at home understandably sparks your protective instincts to advocate for drastic change.
This creates a sense of overwhelm for yourself, and yet you and I both know that’s not who you truly are.
You are your child’s advocate.
So, before you pull your kiddo out of school…focus on building that identity, and educate yourself on what it’s like to homeschool.

A child who is reaching their fullest potential feels successful in these 5 avenues: community, friendships, academics, family, and inner emotional intelligence.
A child does not categorize their inner self concept by how many of those categories they are thriving in and counting the highlights.
One category of a perceived failure to a sensitive soul is enough to be debilitating, especially if they're perfectionistic.
Sensitive kids don't think "at least 4 out of 5 areas are good".
One failure damages their spirit.
I know you’re doing the best you can, and believe your struggling child when they say it's not okay.

When you start wondering if your kid is playing you, it hits like a gut punch, doesn't it?
How did things escalate so far, so fast?
Isn't parenting meant to be smoother sailing than this?

That nagging thought sneaks in.

Man, it's like you finally get a system down pat with your HSC, thinking you've got their sensitivities all figured out.
Then without warning, some new thing comes along and completely wrecks your routine overnight!
Being an HSC parent is tough as nails - some days it can really feel like they're deliberately pushing all your buttons just to see your stress levels max out.
Been there, haven't you?
Take it from me, you are not alone in that feeling.

Friends, I was beyond furious after seeing a post from a parent who was guided by a so-called "therapist" who gave a young child such a damaging label.
The diagnosis they provided? Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
Just thinking of it triggers me because through my research and clinical experience, I've seen the heartbreak it causes.
For years, eager, confused, EXHAUSTED parents have come to me seeking understanding - why does little Timmy have meltdowns at sports practice?
Why won't Emily stay at a sleepover?
But too often, other providers slap these simplistic labels that annihilate the little hope they’re hanging onto.

I feel you, coming back after the holidays can be straight up rough.
Stomachs are in knots.
Tears flowing non-stop.
Changes wreck the body and mind alike.
And after relaxing with family over winter break too? Forget about it.
Parents were probably praying for Christmas magic to last a little longer, anxiously awaiting the daily meltdowns school will no doubt bring.
The morning routines were tense enough getting out the door before vacation mode.
But now?
Schedules are shredded, routines ripped to pieces, schedules all twisted six ways from Sunday.

Are you tired of feeling frustrated and helpless when it comes to your child's aggressive behavior?
Do you feel like you've tried everything from traditional parenting techniques to yelling and rewards, but nothing seems to work?
Here at MTC we understand how difficult and stressful it can be to deal with a child who is exhibiting aggressive behavior.
It can take a toll on your relationship with your child and with your partner, causing arguments and tension.
But there is hope.
Just look at what happened with Jamie and John and their 7-year-old HSC.
They had tried everything they could think of (sticker charts, rewards, yelling, counting to 3…), but nothing seemed to work.

Relationships strained to the breaking point.
And you feel powerless, like nothing works to manage your HSC’s intense emotions.
As a parent, few things cause more pain than seeing your child struggle emotionally.
Dealing with intense meltdowns, withdrawal, or overwhelming emotions, you know the toll this takes on the entire family.
Highly sensitive children experience the world differently than others.
Every sound, sight, touch or change can feel amplified, if they do not have the skills to regulate their emotions, & this can cause disruptions to the peace of your home.
Even if you try to validate their feelings, your reactions and consequences seem to only make things worse without a process…

No matter how much we love our children... they can embarrass us.
Whether screaming in stores or rude behavior, it's difficult to watch.
On one hand, you never want your child to feel like they've disappointed you.
You obviously don’t want your child to know you’re embarrassed of them.
Yet harsh looks from other parents burn, and meltdowns in public feel like you’re put in a spotlight for the way you parent..

The holidays are a glorious time of food, family and gratitude!
But for parents of HSCs, getting to that table brings worries and anxiety.
Last year plays on an endless loop - the dread building each November.
Canceled plans, disrupted meals, stress ruining moments meant for bonding.
Maybe you're still trying to coax your reluctant social butterfly out from their room to mingle.
Or perhaps getting shoes on causes a meltdown because your highly sensitive child struggles with transitions.
Maybe that fall sweater Nana made doesn’t feel just right, so now there's threats to wear it and tears and screaming ensue.

Ugh, sometimes it feels like your kiddos age a decade overnight!
It's wild how fast they seem to grow up before your eyes.
One day they're having fun coloring books and playing pretend, and suddenly they're declaring it all "babyish" and "lame"?
It's so confusing trying to keep up with where they're at.
And strategies that used to soothe them when they were younger just don't cut it anymore.
When they're upset about something, the usual response, "it'll be okay" gets them more worked up instead of calming them down like it used to.
But stepping in too heavy-handedly to try and fix things for them also often backfires and drives them away from you.

We all hear it, constantly!
“Come play with me, come play with me, come play with me!”
Listen, no one understands more than I do that as a busy parent the one of the hardest things to do is step out of your routine and play.
Especially with a Highly Sensitive Child and it’s not always “fun.”
Like when it ends in your highly sensitive child melting down because they didn’t win.
Nope. Forget it!
With life's huge to-do list, play time feels like extra baggage.
But listen up - connection cures what ails that sweet soul.
And playtime heals in ways task-tackling never will.

Lying awake at night, worrying about your sensitive child?
Wondering if you're doing enough to keep them safe and secure?
Questioning every parenting decision you make?
Yep.
You're certainly not alone in feeling this way.

Is there something wrong with my parenting? With my child?
The thoughts just swirl in your head and increase the stress even more.
But as caring as those concerns are, it’s not helping you.

Do you ever feel like your kid has flaws?
If so … I hear you.
No parent wants to think there’s anything ‘wrong’ with their kid, right?
Or that they somehow need “fixing.”
But unfortunately, society conditions us to think this way.
Then, when you add in comments (sometimes well-meaning, sometimes not) from friends and family members, it’s easy to see your kids’ big emotions as some kind of problem.
But what if they weren’t a problem at all?
What if these were actually reasons to celebrate?
This is a reframe we do with our clients.

STOP trying to solve your kid’s problems.
That might be a weird way to start a podcast …
But way too many parents go into “fix it mode” the moment their kid enters a meltdown.
If you do this, it’s keeping them stuck in a destructive cycle.
I know you’re only trying to help.
Trouble is, “fix it mode” usually means bypassing your kid’s feelings, and looking for a solution.
To you and I, a solution is the best thing, right?
But to your child, mid-meltdown, a solution is the last thing they want.
What do they want?
To feel validated.
And to know you hear them and see them.
That’s not to say you can’t problem solve.
You just need to solve the problem together.

There’s no reason why you can’t calm the daily chaos, quickly de-escalate drama, and have a confident, happy, outgoing kiddo by the end of this month.

Humans LOVE labels.
They can give us a sense of belonging.
Or justify our behaviors.
We can even take a label that was once negative, redefine and reclaim it, and flip it into a positive.
Just like with an HSC.
That ‘label’ helps people not see our child as a problem, or a nuisance, or just straight up badly behaved …
And instead, gives them a label that shows them as more unique.
In a way, diagnoses are labels too.
And these can be super useful.
Because a diagnosis can help you get access to much-needed support, both financially and emotionally.
But there’s also a dark side to diagnoses.
See, when a diagnosis turns into a negative label, that leads to limiting assumptions.
People assume an HSC is going to be short-tempered, easily upset, disruptive, or hard work.
In reality, your child might not be any of these at all.

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant.”
- Albert Einstein
Intuition is a powerful thing.
We use intuition multiple times, every single day.
When meeting someone for the first time …
When deciding how appetizing a plate of food looks …
Intuitively knowing the coffee we’re about to drink is likely going to be very hot …
… and then drinking it anyway because we need our caffeine fix.
🙂
So why then, do we struggle to use intuition when it comes to our kids?

Are you dreading the first day back at school?
If so … join the club!
Transitioning from the summer break back into the fall semester is one of the most stressful times of year for HSC parents.
Not only do you have the tension and anxiety of another routine change …
(Maybe just as your kiddo got used to the summer vacation routine) …
But they might have new teachers, new classmates, new subjects and new classrooms.
Maybe even a new school entirely!
It’s the perfect storm for meltdowns to occur.
But it doesn’t need to be this way.
Sure, I’m not saying it’s going to be easy.

The number of parents I’ve spoken to who are amazing with their HSC, but still struggle day in, day out is downright crazy.

I need to be brutally honest with you for a second …
Rigid, strict parenting is NEVER going to help your kid feel calm and in control.
I know, I know …
‘Traditional’ parenting advice tells us kids respond to discipline and order.
And hey, I’m not about to get super woo woo and new age-y.
But I can tell you from my 10+ years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, along with everything I’ve learned from helping 700+ families …
Kids in general don’t do well with rigid parenting.
And HSCs can get WORSE if you’re too strict.
So what should you do instead?

It SUCKS to see your child struggle.
And because it’s painful when your kiddo’s stressed and upset, most parents make a huge mistake -
They swoop in the moment there’s any kind of distress …
… and they try to fix the problem.
That’s a big NO-NO.
“But Megghan, surely my kid needs me when they’re upset?
You’re not saying I just leave them to ‘cry it out’ are you?”
No.

Last summer was a nightmare for Lori and her husband, Jeff.
See, while most families were enjoying the longer days, the awesome weather and more time outdoors …
They were going through hell with their HSC.
Like a lot of highly-sensitive children, their son struggled the minute his daily routine changed.
Which meant he was having constant meltdowns.
In their words, the summer was “a nightmare of boredom, frustration and complaints.”
Lori was feeling upset, helpless, and even started having panic attacks.
And Jeff felt like he was failing her, because no matter what he tried, nothing made the situation better.

Every parent wants to build unwavering trust with their child.
You want them to come to you when they’re struggling …
Not be afraid of telling you how they’re feeling …
And to have the kind of bond that’s totally unbreakable.
Problem is, most parents don’t have this.
And building that kind of trust is even harder as a parent of an HSC.
Sometimes it feels, no matter what you try, there’s this wall between you.
That wall might just make for awkward conversations, and a lack of connection.

Today’s topic is a must-listen for any parent thinking of taking their child to therapy.
See, while hiring a therapist to help with your kid’s needs might seem like a responsible move …
Therapy is one of the best ways to make meltdowns worse.
That probably sounds controversial.

No time of the year is “easy” for parents of HSCs.
Whether your kid gets super stressed after Christmas …
Hates the change in seasons …
Or experiences extreme anxiety at the start of a new semester …
One time that clients at MTC frequently tell us is a minefield, is the end of the school year.
While most kids are excited for the long, school-free days ahead, for HSCs, the change in routine can be triggering.
This is why it’s so important you know what to do to support them through the transition.
Because your actions here can be the difference between a fun-filled summer, full of amazing memories that last a lifetime -- for them and for you …
And a summer of meltdowns, arguments, and wishing away the days!

I know that might sound weird.
After all, as parents of HSCs, you can often be judged because your kiddo doesn’t conform to social norms.
But when we work with parents here at MTC, we make sure our clients don’t just learn to ‘get by’ with an HSC …
… but actively CELEBRATE their child’s differences.
Now, you might be thinking -
“But Megghan, my child can be challenging. I love them soooo much …
But I don’t know how their challenges are an advantage?”
If that’s you, then listen on to hear how you can dream again!

Ever feel like you and your kid are speaking different languages?
And I don’t just mean they’re speaking French, which you studied in high school so you can kinda pick up the odd word …
More like you’re speaking Spanish and they’re speaking Swahili.
If so, that’s a common situation for a lot of HSC parents.
Most I speak with, in fact.
And this clash can make it super difficult to understand their behavior.
Because you wonder why they’re behaving in a way that’s so alien.
And all the reasoning and persuasion in the world doesn’t seem to do anything.
Well, here’s the thing -
While you might think you know the reason your kid is acting up, or having a tough time …
The real reason probably isn’t what you think.

Giving your child praise can be tricky.
That might sound like a weird thing to say.
Because kids like praise, right?
But how do you know when you’re praising them TOO much?
The truth is, there’s no such thing as ‘too much’ praise …
Provided you’re giving them praise in the right way.
Consistent and meaningful praise boosts your child's self-esteem and promotes positive behavior.
Which calms the outbursts, eliminates meltdowns, and helps them be happy and confident.
But praise needs to be authentic.
Otherwise, your child will pick up that you’re not being sincere.

It’s time to settle a debate that’s raging in the world of HSC parenting …
What’s the BEST way to parent an HSC - With passive parenting, or with punishment?
While passive parenting may provide benefits, it can also result in a lack of boundaries, emotional support…
And you end up treating your child as fragile, worsening meltdowns. (Both the frequency and the severity.)
Plus, if you passively parent and don’t set boundaries?
Your kiddo WILL push those boundaries. (Consciously or subconsciously.)
It’s a recipe for a confused, insecure child who craves structure.
So is punishment the way to go?

Does the thought of being invited out for a meal or family parties send you into a whirlwind of stress?
That’s because dealing with social situations when you have an HSC is tough.
Doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a big family party …
Or even just playdates with one other kid.
Any parent of an HSC knows just how stressful these can be.
But the worst thing about all this?
The shame you can feel as your kid goes into a meltdown, or struggles to cope when others are around.
Because you feel like people are judging you, and your parenting.
Which ultimately means it’s just easier to stay home, where you know things will be more bearable.
So you miss out on making amazing memories as a family.
But to get to the stage where your kid actually enjoys new experiences and social situations, you need to do 4 things…

I recently got pretty mad after a conversation with a client.
She overheard a group of moms talking about her child, using words like 'weak, shy, and overly emotional.'
It made me upset because these misconceptions about highly sensitive children are simply not true.
HSCs are resilient, and with help, they can be sociable and control their emotions.
As a parent, it starts with you to take responsibility and help your child.
I know some parents want an easy solution, but hearing that it starts with you is empowering.
There are ways to help your HSC, but it requires effort on your part.
So how do we do that?

Screaming and shouting …
Slamming doors, punching walls, and throwing books all over the room …
If any of these happen the minute you try to get your kid to do homework -
Welcome to the world of parenting an HSC!
Most of us didn’t like homework when we were at school.
But we all kinda sucked it up, and accepted homework as a necessary evil.
That doesn’t happen with HSC kids though.
And actually, I hear of truly terrible situations, every single day, in my Facebook group.
And even if your kid doesn’t have a full-blown meltdown, sometimes simply seeing the struggle they go through and the frustration they experience with homework is heartbreaking.
Because we never want to see our kids in turmoil.
So what can you do, as a parent, to help out?

There’s something NO ONE is talking about when it comes to parenting highly sensitive children.
Neglecting this one thing is a surefire way to keep you stuck in the meltdown cycle …
With a kid who stays unpredictable and volatile …
Leaving you tiptoeing around, worried about what to say 24/7 …
And making you feel like you’re doing something “wrong.”
What one thing am I talking about?
Mindset.
I don’t mean your kiddo’s mindset either.
I mean your mindset.
Now, you might be thinking -
“But Megghan, what does MY mindset have to do with ending the meltdown cycle, and helping my child be calm, confident and sociable?”
Well … A LOT!
Mindset is something we place a big emphasis on at MTC.
And for good reason.

Ever feel like you’re walking on eggshells at home?
One moment, your HSC is calm, loving and content …
The next, they’re in full-blown meltdown mode …
And then soon after, they totally shut down?
If so, let me tell you something -
This is expected in the meltdown cycle.
In the world of HSCs, going from one emotion to another super quickly isn’t uncommon at all.
We call this “The shutdown/ irritability cycle.”
Just because it’s expected though, doesn’t make it any easier to deal with.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about the stress this causes, either.

Growing up, I wasn’t a highly sensitive child …
But I was the sibling of a highly sensitive child.
See, people often wonder why I got into the work I do at MTC.
And while it’s because my passion truly is helping parents and kids in this situation, it’s also down to my personal experience.
I want to preface this by saying that I have an amazing relationship with my parents.
They’re kind, loving people, and we get on great.
But looking back, knowing what I know now, there were things in my childhood that definitely weren’t optimal, and had a negative impact on me as I grew up.
Parenting an HSC is super tough.
Parenting an HSC and a non-HSC is even tougher.
Because it’s such a balancing act.
And clearly, you can’t use the exact same strategy for both kids.
So what can you do?

Something that comes up a LOT in my Facebook group is judgment.
We get parents posting almost every day about how family members simply can’t stop criticizing or passing comments on their parenting styles.
Which sucks.
Because there you are, doing the work needed to help your kiddo end the meltdown cycle, develop vital social skills, and grow into a calm, confident young adult …
And you’re getting unnecessary comments from others who feel the need to get involved!
Now, I want to preface this by saying, I understand why family members can be critical.
I mean, we all go on our own journeys, right?
And when something is a little bit ‘different’ it can be scary.
So to help you out with this, I wanted to explain the 3 main reasons why your family might be upset with your shift in parenting style.

Being the parent of a teenager is never easy.
But when your teen is highly sensitive … Well, that adds a whole other level of complexity.
If you’re a parent of a teen though, and you heard my podcast last week about the importance of consistency with highly-sensitive kids, maybe you’re thinking -
“Well, Megghan’s advice there should work for us, too.”
Stop right now!
There’s a BIG difference between the 3 things parents of younger kids need to do for consistency, compared to parents of teens.
That’s why, if you have a kid between 13 and 19 (or even just a little outside of this range,) you need to tune in.
Because I’m about to reveal the 3 consistency traps that keep teen parents stuck.

Does the following sound familiar:
You read some advice about managing meltdowns.
Maybe it’s something from one of my Facebook lives …
Maybe it’s in an online forum …
Or maybe you pick up a new strategy from a podcast or book.
You try this advice, and, whadda ya know … It works!
Your kiddo is calmer, more controlled, and the meltdowns reduce …
… for a week or two.
Then, before you know it, things are right back where they were. Or possibly, even worse.
And this strategy that worked so well just a few weeks ago?
Well, now it’s as good as useless!
If that sounds like you, this is super common.

Ever feel like no matter what you do, you just can’t get through to your kid?
You’ve read all the books …
Tried all the tactics …
And diligently stick to everything you should be doing …
But whenever you try to speak to them about emotions, they clam up?
If so … Welcome to the world of parenting an HSC :)
I’m not saying all HSCs are difficult to talk to about emotions.
But the majority are.
And that can lead parents to feeling disheartened, disillusioned, and like there’s no point even trying.
Many think outsourcing emotional regulation to a therapist is the only choice.
So they ask around, go for multiple assessments, and spend a small fortune on sessions for their kiddo, which do …
Absolutely nothing!
See, there can be a time and a place for therapy.
But emotional regulation isn’t it.

As parents, our number one priority is to make sure our kids feel safe at all times.
But when you’re parenting an HSC, that’s easier said than done.
We don’t want to see our kiddo hurting, and struggling to express their emotions.
And we definitely don’t want them to feel unsafe. And so more often than not, we become their safe space.
Now, a ‘safe space’ can mean a lot of different things for different HSCs.
In most cases, if you can provide whatever safe space is needed FOR THEM, that particular meltdown will end sooner.
But there’s a problem …
Because while this strategy might be useful in the moment, it doesn’t do a lot to end the long-term meltdown cycle.
In fact, chances are, you’re making things worse.

Should you intervene when your highly sensitive child is actually performing…well?
I bet you’ve asked yourself this question too many times, and the answer can be a bit tricky.
As a parent of a highly sensitive child, even if your child is high-performing, you may notice that your student can fall under the radar due to their performance.
Or possibly even struggle to cope with the emotional demands of their school environment.
It's important to remember that just because your child excels academically, it may still be crucial to intervene at school in order to provide the support your child needs to thrive.
Here are 3 key indicators that it's time for you to take action and support your child in the school setting even if they are appearing to “adjust” well:
✔️Meltdowns or shutting down at home: If your child is melting or shutting down at home because of what's happening or not happening at school, it's time to get involved and engage with the school to shift the systems being used to slow down your child's emotions.
✔️Performance anxiety: If your child is constantly working towards perfection, can't tolerate a single mistake, and is significantly struggling with homework at home, it's time to help them feel safe enough to make mistakes and have imperfect grades.
✔️Refusing: If your child is refusing to go to school, it's a clear indication that it's time to intervene.
You have the power to advocate for your child and create transformation in their school experience.
At Megghan Thompson Coaching, we help parents of highly sensitive children break out of the meltdown cycle in as little as 8 weeks and we're hosting an online event on Friday, February 3rd at 4pm EST.
We will walk you through understanding how your child fits the highly sensitive trait and how you can support them in the school setting.

As a parent of a highly sensitive child, you understand the unique challenges that come with navigating the world.
Imagine being in a classroom with 14 other children, and your teacher just finished a Science lesson, but you missed half of it because you couldn't stop listening to your neighbor's whispers.
This is just a small example of what highly sensitive children experience every day in school.
I understand that parenting a highly sensitive child can present many unique challenges and it's easy for them to be misdiagnosed or labeled as distractible or inattentive.
These challenges may manifest in different ways such as:
😣a child who suppresses their emotions at school and releases them at home
😣a child who feels lost or confused in the classroom
😣a child who displays disruptive or disengaged behavior
It’s natural to be curious and want your child’s educators to understand that these behaviors may be a result of a child's heightened sensitivity and not simply misbehavior.
However, most parents struggle not only with how to start the conversation, but they also struggle with how to properly advocate for their children in a way that avoids misdiagnosis.
Our upcoming event Success in School for Your Highly Sensitive Child was designed to empower you.
You’ll understand where to start to be your child’s strongest advocate while navigating their school experience.
Join us on Friday, February 3rd at 4 pm EST as I personally walk you through on how to understand and discern how the highly sensitive trait impacts your child most while in school.
However, if you want greater clarity on how to best handle situations such as meetings with your child’s school, approaching conversations to seek greater support for your child, and how to avoid misdiagnosis in the process…
I offer an ELITE access to this event that’ll give you the roadmap to successfully navigating your child’s school.
Either way, I urge you to join us as we work together to break out of ineffective patterns and give your child the support they need to thrive.

Is your kid struggling in school?
Maybe refusing to do homework?
Not playing or socializing well with others?
Cruising alone fine one minute, then in full-on meltdown mode the next?
If so, I’m guessing you’ve considered getting them a psych eval.
Or maybe their school’s suggested this is the next step to figure out what’s “wrong.”
But could a psych eval do more harm than good?
Spoiler alert …
Yes it can! I don’t say that to scare you.
I say that because it’s important for you to know, psych evals can be confusing for parents HSCs.
They can lead to more anxiety, more uncertainty, and STOP you from getting them the help they need.

If your kiddo is like most at this time of year, the last thing they’ll want is to be outside.
Chances are, they’ll have their head buried deep in a phone …
Wasting hours on some games console …
Or just staring blankly at the TV for hours.
And while they might seem perfectly content doing this, so much time spent indoors -- particularly time in front of screens -- is one of the worst things for their mood.
I know, for most of us, January is dark and miserable.
The buzz of the holidays feels long gone.
And you’re probably not motivated to get outside much yourself.
Especially if it’s wet, windy and cold.
But spending time in the fresh air and nature can genuinely do wonders for your kiddo’s mental health.
Not to mention yours, too!

Suicide isn’t a comfortable topic to speak about.
Especially when talking about suicide in kids and teens.
But it’s something I feel I need to cover.
Because shockingly, a recent CDC report showed that suicide rates have increased 195% since 1990.
And that’s not all. In youths aged 5-19, self-harm has also risen by a staggering 411%.
And in children aged 5-12, suicide is now the 5th leading cause of death.
I know hearing this might make you uncomfortable.
And it should.
It certainly does me.
But we can’t just brush this issue under the carpet.
After all, resistance to speaking about suicide and self-harm in children and teens is likely one of the reasons these rates have continued to climb.
And sure, there are other factors involved as well …
But a reluctance to talk won’t have helped.
Self-harm and suicide risks are very real.

Whenever I speak to parents in January, they tell me one thing -
“I feel like I need another break already.
That vacation was hardly worth it.”
Which is sad.
Because we all want to enjoy our downtime, appreciate our family over the holidays, and go into the New Year feeling upbeat and optimistic.
But as a parent of an HSC, that’s often the last thing you feel.
Because despite best intentions, the holiday season was stressful.
Maybe your kid acted out more than usual …
You had to leave family parties early as they got so stressed …
Or the change in routine completely threw them off, and it was “meltdown o’clock” every single day!
Whatever it was, as cliche as it is to say …
New Year is a GREAT time to set new goals and make a commitment to calming the chaos and eliminating the meltdowns.

Do you find yourself resorting to "clap backs" or responding to your children with anger and aggression?
While this may provide momentary relief and compliance, it can ultimately push your children away and damage your relationship with them in the long term.
Research has shown that when parents raise their voices or justify their anger towards their children, it has negative effects on their mental and emotional well-being.
Children who are exposed to this kind of behavior feel unsafe expressing their emotions to their parents.
Which means when they're older they won't come to you when they may need you the most.

Here at MTC we understand that parenting can be one of the most rewarding, yet challenging experiences in life.
When your child is struggling with mental health issues, it can be especially difficult and overwhelming.
If you're reading this, you may be in a situation similar to what Rachel and Ash experienced with their HSC.
Their kiddo was suicidal, wishing to die, yelling, freezing up, and refusing to go to school.
Rachel & Ash went to countless therapists and tried many approaches, but nothing seemed to work.
They were at their wits end and didn't know what to do.
They were worried about their child’s safety and well-being, and they were also struggling to manage the rest of their family and their own stress and emotions.
But there is hope, Rachel and Ash found our program.

"This too shall pass."
We've heard this encouraging statement so many times.
Unfortunately this is what parents cling to for years with no end in sight to the meltdown cycle.
It is crucial to recognize when it is time to reach out for support.
Today we discuss "enough is enough" as a sign that it is time for a strategic change in your parenting approach & the dangers of holding on in survival mode and hoping that things will change on their own.

So you ‘survived’ the first 12 or so Christmases of your HSC’s life, and now you’re looking forward to a smoother, less stressful holiday season?
Well … Good luck with that!
Unfortunately, parenting a sensitive child at any age comes with its challenges.
And while those holiday challenges might be different now than when they were younger …
You’re still going to have your patience tested this holiday season.
That’s why I wanted to dedicate this week’s topic to any parent of a teen who’s worried about the month ahead.
Now, a lot of what I speak about in terms of holidays and HSCs in general still applies for teens.
Routine is important.
And you definitely don’t want to overhaul your plans, just because you’re worried of how they might react,
But there are also special considerations that only apply to teens.

There's a huge misconception in the mental health field and with professionals across the board entirely...
Teaching coping skills is reactive when used to stop the meltdown. In that moment, your child is beyond the point of learning from you or learning a coping skill.

Any parent of an HSC knows, the holiday season can be a NIGHTMARE.
Whether it’s overstimulation at family parties …
Disappointment surrounding gifts …
Or just the change from day-to-day routine …
There’s so much happening that can trigger a meltdown.
So it’s totally understandable why a lot of the parents I speak to dread this time of year.
While other parents are putting up the tree, buying gifts and enjoying their kids’ excitement …
HSC parents are preparing for a month of ups, downs and never-ending stress.
So what can we do about this?
I mean, you want to enjoy the holidays, right? Not just survive them.

I just got off a heartbreaking call.
I was speaking with a family who were ready to ship their 10-year old daughter off to her Aunt’s house … Permanently!
This Mom and Dad were at their wits end.
Because they couldn’t imagine 8 more years of parenting stress.
Especially when their daughter was such an angel outside the house.
But at home?
They were being torn apart.
Sadly, I’ve heard things like this many times before.
And if I’m honest, I don’t think these parents would have abandoned their daughter like that.
But unfortunately, when you get to this level, it also tells me something else.

This week we are sharing an interview that has been impactful for many of our audience.
Tune in to hear Savannah’s story.

As a society, we love to put labels on things.
Whether it’s labeling people as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ …
Labeling foods as ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’ …
Or putting labels on kids who don’t conform exactly to what’s expected of them.
This comes up a lot in my private practice.
Parents come in because their kiddo has been displaying HSC-like behavior, and they think they need a diagnosis …
I can understand why getting a diagnosis might give parents some comfort.
After all, if you went to the doctor with unexplained stomach pain, you’d want them to give you a concrete reason for that, right?
You’d want a diagnosis.
But in HSCs, most of the time, a diagnosis has a negative impact on their self-esteem and on their future.

Why can’t my HSC be happy?
Is my HSC destined for struggle?
We know these are questions that spin through your head.

Most parents have times when they just don’t ‘get’ their child.
And most kids think their parents are weird, too.
That’s just life!
But when you’re parenting an HSC, that disconnect can feel 100 times greater.
In fact, this is something I hear from the parents I work with a lot.
Deep down, they know a certain level of disconnect is normal.
Because when they were teens, their parents didn’t ‘get’ them.
But despite this, they start second guessing themselves.

A lot of parents I work with are holding it all in or gritting their teeth and baring through the day.

Have you ever been mid-meltdown with your kiddo, only to hear someone remark -
“Kids these days!”
Or maybe you’ve been with family, and they mention something about being ‘spoiled.’
If so, I feel your pain.
Here you are, doing your best to keep the situation under control, only to have someone judge your parenting.
Even if the person saying it is well meaning, it still sucks.
Because they have no idea what you’re going through.
And as you know, comments like this are not helpful.
But do they have a point?
Is modern US culture to blame for your child’s struggles?
Or have you been spoiling them, and that’s why you’re dealing with emotional outbursts, high levels of anxiety, and a kid who struggles with things other children take in their stride?
Short answer …
No, you’re not spoiling them.

I’m not a nutritionist.
And I’m not a dietitian.
But one thing I do know is that what your kid eats can have a huge impact on their behavior.
It makes sense, right?
I mean, we know as adults, if we eat crap … We feel like crap!
And if we eat good, healthy, nutritious foods, we have better focus, more energy, and actually want to do things.
Same goes for your kiddo.
Managing their nutrition can be tough at the best of times though.
And with Halloween just around the corner, I know a lot of parents are going to be seriously worried.
We see it every year in my Facebook group.
The questions come flooding in.

Ever heard a professional talk about how it’s a good thing for your kiddo to “get their emotions out?”
By which they mean scream, yell and have a meltdown.
Here’s the thing -
This approach is like teaching your child how to digest food by making them vomit!
You’d never tell your kiddo that throwing up after a meal was a sign of healthy digestion.
If that started happening, you’d look for a solution, FAST.
Well, it’s the same for their emotions. You don’t want your HSC to vomit up their emotions …
You want them to ‘digest’ them. Why?
Because while we want our kids to express themselves, and to feel comfortable to tell us how they really feel …
We also want to encourage them to have emotion. Watch today's episode to learn why this is so important.

A stressed out Mom posted this in our Facebook group recently:
“Has anyone else ever discovered clothing to be a really hard issue with your HSC?”
“I’m about to lose my mind finding clothing that works and my son will wear. Does anyone have any tips?
I just ordered the same exact pants he’s worn for months and he put them on and immediately threw them off because they didn’t feel right."
Now, I know this is a common issue, because we see it in our coaching practice a lot.
But I gotta be honest, the response to the post shocked me.

“Happiness is an illusion, my parents aren’t happy, so how can it happen for me?.” I heard a phrase like this from an older teen I spoke to earlier this week. We were discussing whether we’d be a good fit to work together and her hope was wavering. This is such a shame, since we know teens have their whole life ahead of them to visualize the possibilities of their future.
The challenge here is that this is a common theme I see when I work with parents of sensitive children. Eventually their light starts to dim and it affects their marriage. They struggled for so long trying to figure out how to parent their child that they argue and drift apart.
I’ve seen it early in the parenthood journey, and this pattern doesn’t go away without radical change.

Do you ever feel embarrassed by your kid’s behavior?
If so … You’re not alone.
Being embarrassed is a normal part of parenting.
But with an HSC, that embarrassment can be on another level.
Not only do embarrassing situations crop up more frequently … They can also be way more intense.
So it’s normal to spend a lot of your time feeling red-faced, ashamed, and worrying that everyone’s looking at you.
Or worse … Judging you.
And, while most kids grow out of this naturally, that’s definitely not the case with HSCs.

Megan and her husband Paul were at their wits end and had run through three different therapists in two years!
They were starting to think that their five year old was just going to be one of those kids that just isn't parent-able, until they stumbled upon our work and had a call with us.
In that conversation, they learned what was possible and what was available to their family.
Megan & Paul were able to do the work to break out of the pattern of daily, multiple times a day meltdown cycle with their daughter that they have been dealing with since she was 18 months old.
I'm not here to tell you that it was easy.
Megan and Paul were skeptical of our work together for several weeks into the program.
Yet they still were able to achieve the results we're talking about.
We're here to support you and make this simple but it doesn't mean that it’ll be easy.
Breaking out of this pattern requires you to change the way that you think about your child and what's possible, start to be playful even if it feels totally out of your wheelhouse and systematically break out of the meltdown cycle and notice what you are doing to keep the pattern going in the first place.
Though many of those tactics are part of our strategy, they are often the exact opposite of what you'll hear from professionals that you engage with.
Be sure to tune into Megan's story and observe how they were able to completely change their daughters functioning in less than six months.

Do you ever wonder if your kid is REALLY having a problem at school …
… or if what they’re going through is just a regular struggle that might pass in time?
Parenting a sensitive child is tough.
You know they have needs other kids don’t.
And that you need to bring your A-game, every single day.
But still, sometimes there’s that creeping doubt -
“Should I be doing more … Or do I need to let them figure some of this out on their own?”
You know me - In my coaching practice, we’re all about giving HSCs the tools, skills and resilience they need to handle whatever life throws at them.
But sometimes, you gotta step in.
Especially if they’re really having problems at school.
The question is - How do you know?
Well, there’s 3 things to look out for.

“Why does my child do so well at school …
… but completely lose it at home?”
That’s a question we get a lot from parents.
See, while it might be natural to assume your kiddo would act up MORE at school, because of the extra stimulus, the extra stress, and having to conform to ‘rules’ …
The opposite is often true.
And it can leave parents scratching their heads, wondering what they’re doing wrong.
Here’s the thing -
You’re not doing anything wrong.

When your child is experiencing anger they are experiencing a deeper emotion and then on top of that they are experiencing shame.
Shame that they can't have things that they want in the moment. Shame that they aren't good enough to get what they want. Shame that they can't achieve whatever it is that they're trying to achieve. And shame that their emotions are affecting other people.
If you are not clearly addressing the shame and just focusing on the expression of the meltdown then you are not addressing the true cause of your child's cyclical anger.

Running around the house like someone gave them a Red Bull at 8pm.
Bedtime battles can be the worst kind of meltdown in this cycle.
When your energy is drained, your patience is thin, of course it drives you extra crazy to watch your kid take 30+ minutes to do the simple tasks of pjs and brush teeth.
But the saddest part can be that you look forward to the snuggle time that can happen as soon as they get this part done, adding to your frustration.
And you know that disappointment is about to be shared– because the ‘one more story’ or ‘just a minute’ right before lights out could mean a big explosion if you don’t concede to the request…
When do these mental gymnastics end?

That means, the way that you parent is more important to change and transformation than teaching your child coping skills as a first line of action as a foundation in moving out of daily meltdowns for your family.
Today we talk about differential susceptibility and your highly sensitive child.

Waiting with baited breath trying to suck the life out of this last week before you have to be a ‘mean parent’ again. What if there's a better way?
There’s no doubt about it, HSCs thrive on having a regular routine.
And that’s all well and good … But sometimes, try as you might, routine isn’t something you can control.
You know this as well as anyone, but small changes can bring about BIG reactions in sensitive kids.
They can get stuck in overwhelm, descend into a shutdown cycle, or go into full-on meltdowns, just from the tiniest change in schedule.
Meaning for many parents, getting back into a routine post-Summer is a nightmare.
And what might seem like a small change to you (or even to most kids) feels like their world is ending to an HSC.
Listen on to learn why.

It's super important to know that you're working with a professional who can guide you in understanding your Highly Sensitive Child's personality trait.
Understanding the difference between the behaviors as a symptom of the parent-child relationship and how they may be ineffectively managed is key in helping your HSC to break out of the meltdown/shutdown cycle.
Rather than diagnosing your child with a mental health disorder that may or may not fit because the professional is not clear on the Highly Sensitive trait.
Most professionals that are not familiar with this trait also don't realize how it can lead to mental health disorder or being misdiagnosed with a mental health disorder.
Today we discuss the 5 issues with mental healthcare for children and how that affects you and your Highly Sensitive Child.

Stomach aches. Tears. Tantrums. And complete meltdowns.
All these can be a daily struggle when trying to get your HSC to go to school.
And that’s on a normal morning, when they’re in a routine. But following a long vacation?
Well, that’s even more stressful.
In fact, many parents tell me they dread this time of year, because they know every single day will incur a freak out …
If not multiple freak outs.
They’re waiting with baited breath for the school year to start again …
Trying to eke out every last second of the summer, before the ‘chaos’ sets in, the struggle returns, and every morning drains the life from them.
And what’s even worse is, you’ve probably only just got into your vacation routine, and now everything’s about to change back again!

Automatic responses...
They can sabotage you and your HSC.
Not addressing this in a systematic and effective way is perpetuating the same problem when your kid hits a different developmental milestone.
It just might show up in a different way...
The meltdowns may stop but they might be constantly irritable, or develop more anger and frustration, or stop talking to you, or isolate in their room, or get stuck on their screens and have a meltdown only when you take away the screen.
When that happens you have to take a clear look on whether or not your child is blaming themselves for their own emotions.
Because if you are not addressing that then you are teaching them that they are the ones creating this chaos in their own emotional experience...

“Shut up”, name calling, threats, how do you draw the line?
You want to be treated with respect in your house, and who can blame you?
You need a place to relax, rest, recharge, and where else can that reliably be but in the comfort of your own home and yet if you’re stuck in the meltdown cycle that feels impossible.
Because if your child is hitting, kicking or yelling “shut up stupid!” to your other children what you’re actually doing is holding your breath daily, counting the hours until bedtime and waking up with dread.
And if this is happening in public- whether your child is threatening classmates, or cursing up a storm in Target, you’re not only feeling ashamed, but also mortified, and likely sad and even defensive because you know this is not your true kid.
It’s heartbreaking to see your kid, the same one who can be compassionate towards animals, notice small delights in nature, and is surprisingly clever, get stuck in deep waters of aggression and revenge seeking.
You know this behavior has got to stop– there’s no way your child will be able to keep a job if they talk to people like that…that’s not how the real world works.
And yet, when you share with your child the list of unacceptable words in your household, it’s as if they choose to use them most when the tension is high.
What gives?

I just got off a call with a parent who said she worked with a therapist that said her son just needed to ‘get his emotions out’.
This child was stating he wished his brother would die, that at 9 years old asking his parents after his meltdowns subsided ‘why do you hate me’ and mom and dad were so exhausted that they were, (regrettably so, obviously)...
yelling when he would not follow through on the daily tasks with multiple warnings…
even when his siblings would do the same thing easily.
So, after trying many sticker charts, talks and lectures, these parents did what every dedicated parent would do– they sought professional help.
And this is what the therapist told them: “he’s emotionally healthy.”
Mom nearly fell out of her chair– and while she didn’t realize that she was working with a novice professional (the therapist was provisionally licensed) that honestly doesn’t matter...

It’s a common phrase in positive parenting, isn’t it?
Has an awesome ring to it– If your child feels better about themselves, their lives, their relationships, they will succeed.
This promise leaves you holding the bag when you’re parenting a Highly Sensitive Child stuck in the meltdown cycle, however, so let’s cover why this parenting phrase is FALSE for your kid.
HSCs want to feel better, of course, but they are missing the capacity to generalize their skills.
So, when you follow the premise of just creating more positivity in your home to solve the meltdown cycle, you are still parenting your child like a non-Highly Sensitive Child.

When you are stuck in the daily meltdown cycle and your spouse or co parent is nitpicking, walking on eggshells can feel like an understatement.
Not only are you trying not to set up the bomb of your kiddo’s meltdown of the day (or hour) but then you are having to deal with withholding your eyebrow twitches when your spouse calls your kid out on something you would deem unnecessary.
Talk about Chinese water torture!
So now you’re holding it in trying to help your kid stay calm, AND holding it in trying not to tell your spouse to cut it out… and you’re lucky if all you do is engage in dagger-like side eye…
Which we know only fuels all of the fires…
Yours because you’re stifling your voice…
Your spouse’s because they feel they have a right to parent and teach your child without your permission…
And your kid’s because they feel the tension… and are already irritable!
If this is your everyday experience you might have tried a few things to break out of this pattern:
You try giving your spouse direct feedback in the moment…
But you know that doesn’t work because then you’re undermining your partner’s parenting authority.
Maybe then you try just ignoring it…
But that means you have to deal with the fallout of being your child’s emotional janitor when dad’s comments are the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Or, you try to run through what could have gone better at the end of the day… which probably ends one of two ways:
Your spouse feels defeated and it turns into a criticism feedback loop.
You don’t actually get to connect at the end of the day because you’re both exhausted trying not to repeat history, but uncertain how to get off the hamster wheel.
Feeling drained yet?

Remember when you pushed through those last few weeks of school meltdowns, daydreaming of easier days without homework meltdowns and reports of under stimulation-driven “misbehavior” from your kid’s teacher…
You weren’t thinking about the hard stuff that comes with parenting an HSC stuck in the meltdown cycle during the summer…
Like how much of your summer vacation is going to be spent wrestling your kid into sunscreen and camp t-shirts with tags…
Wrestling them out of the pool…
And refereeing when they try to police the whole town for splashing during water play…
And yet, here you are.
Summer isn’t meant to be spent daydreaming about breaks from the chaos.
Summer IS your break. It’s meant to be enjoyed!

Highly Sensitive Children want to do it right the first time.
And when they don’t have the skills to manage failure, this can create a host of problems in their lives.
School refusal.
Homework refusal.
Soccer practice meltdowns.
Screams of “I’m so stupid!” and “I might as well not even try!” and “I would rather die than do homework!” ringing through the house.
You name it. You already know it, afterall, don’t you?
So then you wonder, how bad is this?
What do I need to do to break my child out of this prison in their own heart?
How much time do I have before this becomes how she handles problems permanently?
So you rush to reassure: “It’s not that bad- we can do it sweetie, let’s take it one problem at a time.”
Or you investigate: “What about this homework makes this so hard?”
Or you lose your cool: “Enough! You made a commitment to soccer and you will play out the whole season! We are a family of people who keep their commitments!”
But that all makes it worse. The screams turn into full out meltdowns.
Throwing the pencil.
Ripping the paper.
Homework just is not making it home, you’re late to soccer practice, and your child starts threatening themselves.
You may feel the urge to back off, let your child “fail” and see if that helps– relieve the pressure if you will.
I don't advise either end of the pendulum here. Listen to today's episode to learn why.

It’s heartbreaking when your other kids tell you they’re trying to have patience,
But they secretly want to punch their sister for her overwhelming meltdowns…
And then your mind starts to race with all the questions….
How did it come to this?
How is aggression now an acceptable solution in my home?
Haven't I been spending ALL this time trying to teach my HSC that it isn’t?
Why do my other kids feel like the only way to get her to stop is to whack her?
How do they feel knowing that this isn’t really an answer– trapped because they would never do it?
Angry and powerless?
Resentful?
Ignored?
All of the above?
It’s hard enough living under the weight of the meltdown cycle,
But the guilt you carry for feeling like you are neglecting your other child’s emotional needs is exceptionally profound.
It’s not like you can tell your kid,
“Sorry your sister keeps freaking out, I don’t know how to make it stop.”
It feels like both options are wrong.
A. Should you chastise your HSC for feeling their big feelings (albeit unhealthily)?
B. Or tell your non-HSC to shove their emotions and keep tiptoeing around the meltdowns like you do?
If this were a test,
Congrats. Both answers here ARE wrong. But that’s because you haven’t seen option C yet.
C. Break the meltdown cycle altogether.
It is absolutely possible to do,
Your children’s sibling relationship can be spared from disappointment and heartbreak,
And YOU can stop playing referee.

“It’s ok to be sad”... until it’s not… The juggling act you play with your HSC when their sad feelings move swiftly to anger…
(towards you, a sibling, your spouse, a grandparent, the list goes on!) has you feeling completely worn out.
Trying to be all things to all humans in the household, AND prioritize your HSC’s safety decisions is impossible.
You have limits.
You have boundaries.
And when you act as if you have to handle everything at once, and be the container for both of your kid’s feelings, and that of your spouses, and that of any other observers, you can end up frying yourself.
So what do you do?

I have a tough, but straight forward question to ask you.
Do you ever feel like your kid deserves a “better” parent?
If you even have an inkling of a yes or a yes, but; you are not alone.
All parents – including me and my team of experts – have days where we feel like our parenting efforts have sucked the life out of us.
You can’t control the universe and what it brings in to your life,
If your child is struggling with daily meltdowns –
Hitting, kicking, screaming, running away from you,
Saying hurtful things,
Or totally shutting you out and locking up emotionally (and sometimes physically),
This is not a struggle put in your lap that you need to grin and bear.
In fact, you can break the meltdown cycle in as little as 8 weeks,
But I’ll get to that later.
First, I want to talk about how important the way you view yourself is when it comes to parenting.

If you had to write your own definition of parenting, what would you write?
The actual definition from Webster's dictionary reads:
the raising of a child by its parents.
2 : the act or process of becoming a parent.
3 : taking care of someone in the manner of a parent.
Now with that as your basis, what would your definition be if your child was NOT stuck in the meltdown cycle?
Don’t lose that thought. We’ll come back to it at the end.
For now, I want to talk about the challenging aspect of parenting a kid that may not be 100% biologically your child.
Many parents have shared with me that they feel they are at a disadvantage in this case,
Because they never developed parenting instincts.
Therefore, they are missing that connection with their step/adopted child.
Let me bust that myth right away to say parenthood is not always natural.
There is no biological advantage in terms of parenting skills when you have your child vs adopting one (metaphorically and literally).
Anyone can learn how to be an incredible parent.

Stop trying to “diagnose” your kid through the internet. I’m all for doing your own research before you talk to professionals. That’s informed decision making. What I’m talking about here is the tendency for parents to seek out a “thing” to “fix” the problem. On today's episode, I discuss the changing that can be made NOW to see the results in your home.
As a proud owner of the human body, I think we can all agree on one life stage we’d never teleport back to.
Puberty.
The raging hormonal highs and lows,
Acne and body hair randomly popping up all over the place,
Clothes fitting differently,
Social pressures…
You can probably name several of your own personal least favorite things about your experience with puberty, but I digress.
When you have a Highly Sensitive child who is on their way to teenagehood,
And that child is already stuck in the meltdown cycle,
Chances are, you’re already fastening your seatbelt for the wild ride and hoping it’ll get better…
Or you may be on the other side of things and assume your kid will grow out of it.
The thing is – neither of those things are going to happen.

I'm declaring WAR on time-outs, removing tablets, sticker charts, etc. BUT NOT ON YOU as a parent...
There’s a big difference between feeling trapped in trying to help your kid manage their big emotions, and simultaneously get your outcomes…
...and just plain not caring about whether your child feels feelings when they can’t get what they want, treat them like a dog on a choke collar, and justifying it.

I KNOW you love your child & you’ve tried all the things.

It can be hiding in a closest.

I hear from parents all the time that they think their children will grow out symptoms of depression and anxiety. Instead these symptoms lead to statements like, "I'm the worst kid ever", or worse, threats to harm themselves and others. It's so crucial as a parent to understand that this is simply not true. Listen in as I bust myths on suicide, mental health and developmentally appropriate behaviors for highly sensitive children.

In today's episode, we talk about what’s worse: surprising your kid with a gift that they hate, but they pretend to love? Or surprising them with a gift you know they LOVE, but suddenly, they hate it? Let me tell you a story. Our family recently adopted a puppy. My kid loves animals and we knew that she wanted a puppy. We knew there would be hyperactivity, lots of licking, jumping around, chewing on stuff, etc. So when we brought it home, I started thinking about how HSCs who are stuck in the meltdown cycle might react to this much sensory overload. Would fear overshadow excitement? Suck up the joy completely before anyone knew what happened? If your child is missing the skills to regulate their emotions and you are walking on eggshells around their explosions, the meltdowns would take the lead here. So, what do you do if your HSC can’t handle surprises? Tune in to find out.

When you’re the parent of a Highly Sensitive child, it’s hard to know where to draw the line on some things: Is your kid disrespectful? Or does their attitude come from their “strong willed” personality? I can actually solve this one for you, very quickly. Your HSC doesn’t have a respect problem. Now that we’ve established that, why is your HSC so headstrong? And how do you manage it? First off, accepting that your kid is “strong-willed” or “spirited” doesn’t solve anything. One author’s book with bullet points on how to manage your kid’s stubbornness doesn’t address the root of this problem, which, if left unaddressed, can lead to chronic suicidal or self-harmful behavior. The root of this problem is grown from the meltdown cycle. Not from the desire to be difficult. So, what is the solution here? Tune into this episode to find out.

In this episode, you can hear Savannah and Alan's story. If it feels like your HSC is down in the dumps more than the average kid, you’ll want to hear this. You are not alone. Our client Savannah knows exactly how that feels, and that feeling was HARD to work through. Savannah’s story is common for parents who are stuck in the meltdown cycle. She wanted to be a mom for such a long time, and the fact that her child seemed melancholy SO often was disheartening. She describes her HSC as feeling upset and on edge constantly, crying often, and even stated that there was a lack of connection. She felt like no matter how much her and Alan tried, they could not meet their HSC’s needs.

In this episode, I address a major question that many parents have asked themselves: Have you ever felt like having a kid ruined your life? I KNOW this statement is incredibly controversial… However, when you work with parents whose children are suffering so badly with daily meltdowns like I do, it’s a statement that we hear frequently. A statement that, of course, is the most shameful thing a parent can admit. Because anyone with a pulse and a drop of empathy knows that even having that thought for a fleeting moment ONCE must affect your relationship with your kid… and their relationship with themselves. And since we only work with awesome parents, who always have awesome kids, admitting something like this is not only gut-wrenching. It can be paralyzing. But don’t fret just yet. We have the answers you need. Tune in.

In today's episode, I interview Carissa, a Bootcamp alumna, that struggled with the 6 meltdowns daily between her two HSCs. Carissa and Jimmy struggled helping their two HSCs manage their big emotions without wanting to check out or yell daily. Carissa felt her family was separating at the seams. She knew, that if she and Jimmy didn't take action on changing the way they parented their two Highly Sensitive Children wouldn't grow up close, nor supportive of each other and that was unacceptable. In this episode, I’m going to talk about how your child’s eating habits play a role in the meltdown cycle if your child is also suffering from daily meltdowns. As a parent, you wear a million hats, but there’s really only one that is essential. Keep your kid healthy - in a literal sense. Feed them. First, some housekeeping. I’m not a dietician. I have no formal educational background in nutrition. I don’t claim to know what the best thing to feed your child is, and I also am not qualified to give you information on what to feed them, or how to help them with measuring their food intake. (This is why we have an OT parent consultant on our team.)
What I am qualified to teach you is how eating habits can play a role in the meltdown cycle. Want to know how? Tune in to find out.

In this episode, I talk about why sticker charts are harmful for your HSC's development. Highly sensitive kids are especially vulnerable to struggling with cutting themselves slack if they don’t get the highly desirable fancy reward (whether that’s recognition or a tangible item) and that slashes the very internal motivation that you’re working to build. Remember, your HSC feels their feelings deeply. This means that when they don’t reach a coveted goal… DEVASTATION is a result. Learn more about this topic in this short episode.

In this episode, I discuss how to delay worries for your sensitive child without making it worse. The truth is, most of the time your child is not ‘forgetting about it’. With a mind wired to move faster and use more of its power ALL OF THE TIME, your child is just learning to stuff the worry or hide it from you because he notices it’s not the right time for you to hear it. Tune in to hear more about keeping your kid's worries under control.

In this episode, I talk about how parenting an HSC during the holidays can be challenging. Do you suffer from anxiety around Christmas time? I think we all do, but when you’re a parent of an HSC struggling with meltdowns, you are probably thinking at least three times as much as the average parent.
“I better make sure each sibling has an equal amount of gifts.”
“We’ll have to come up with an excuse to leave the Christmas party early so Sarah can watch A Christmas Story again.”
“I’ll take the long way to Grandma’s to avoid passing by the toy store, otherwise we’ll have to stop again.”
On top of the grocery list, gifts to mail out, and Christmas card addresses… It’s no wonder you are feeling anxious. The Grinch was anxious around Christmas time too, but for a different reason. Tune in to learn more about what the story of the Grinch can tell us about our Highly Sensitive children.

But when you limit your family or yourself from doing things because you feel like your kid can’t handle it... It feels like it never really ended. Tune in to learn why missing out on fun things because of the meltdowns is not the answer.

In this episode, I discuss what to do when your HSC doesn't take you seriously. As a parent, it’s confusing when we are playing with our 5 year old and they say, “Mom, that’s dumb. I’m not doing that,” when yesterday, they didn’t think it was dumb at all... This also goes for helping our kids feel better. Telling them “don’t worry” worked when they were 3. But now your kid is 5… and saying “don’t worry” doesn’t work. In fact, it probably pisses them off. So what SHOULD you do when your HSC doesn’t take you seriously? Tune in the find out.

In this episode, I talk about why sending your HSC to a therapist may be putting a bandaid on the problem. The truth is, Highly Sensitive Children need much more support than weekly therapy can provide. Parents need direct strategies to make feelings talk fun and not just a thing you do when you’re talking your kid down from a ledge. And this doesn’t have to take the years that Highly Sensitive Children often spend in therapy.

I’m declaring WAR on time-outs, removing tablets, sticker charts, but not on YOU as a parent if that’s what you’ve used to TRY to figure out how to help your child. This episode is about the four main traps that parents of HSCs and Teens fall into when choosing to pick their battles... Because picking your battles is not the solution. It will not support your HSC emotionally. It will not save you energy for the next meltdown. It will not bring your family the peace and joy they deserve. Tune in to learn exactly what I mean by this, and what to do to better serve your family in these situations.

If you are staying up past midnight googling “how to tell my kid bad news without them freaking out on me or hating me,” This message is for you. If you already struggle with helping your HSC navigate new events or changes in the day, how on Earth can you prepare them for unexpected bad news?
You can’t control what they hear on a day to day basis, or when their favorite toy breaks and now it's discontinued... Or when something scary happens, like a death in the family. Especially if their cousin's pet dies and your niece won't stop talking about it. And you can't tell your kid the bad news to prepare them because they'll just have another meltdown...
It’s normal to be sad when a pet or loved one passes away, but being afraid of your child's out of control emotions is not normal. Tune in as I discuss how to prepare your HSC for surprised BAD news.

In this episode, I break down the Sensory Processing Sensitivity (aka the Highly Sensitive Personality trait). I go over the difference between Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), to help you determine how it fits your child.

As your child grows into a teenager, how do you really feel about it? No shame here. We were all teenagers once, and it’s safe to say that NONE of us would go back in time to live through puberty again...Be honest.
Are you holding your breath because you can’t imagine adding hormones on top of mood swings? Or adding their physical appearance on top of the list of preexisting worries? And the peer pressure… learning how to be yourself and fit in at the same time…
When they already didn’t feel like they fit in…
Tune in as I knock out the phrase "It's just hormones, they'll grow out of it!" because it's not just hormones, and they won’t grow out of it. It's something else.

In this episode, I bust 3 myths about your HSC's case of the Mondays. When your child won’t wake up on time and the meltdown starts before they even open their eyes all the way, dread sits in the back of your throat while you sleep. And get this: it's not a sleep routine issue, so what could it be?
Listen in to learn why your kid REALLY hates mornings,
How to stop the meltdowns that are making you late to school,
And hear how our client Diana went from not being able to find time to shower in the mornings due to her daughter's 90 minute explosions, to a happy home with plenty of time for hair wash days (in 9 weeks!)

Tune in to learn about the difference between a disorder and personality trait and hear the four components that determine how to understand your child's Highly Sensitive personality (D.O.E.S.).
