#498: His Name Was Josiah Hilderbrand
We continue our interview with Liz Hilderbrand who tells us what it was like waiting fourteen agonizing months to finally find her son Josiah. His remains were found off the side of a highway in rural eastern Washington state after he was murdered on his way to a concert. Liz describes the excruciating moment of seeing what was left of her child. She also talks about all the evidence that links Josiah?s murder to the offenders who murdered five other people in White Swan, a remote area on the Yakama Indian Reservation and her frustration that authorities did not include Josiah in their case against the suspects James and Donovan Cloud.

#497: The Murder of Josiah Hilderbrand
25-year-old Josiah Hilderbrand had dreams of becoming a firefighter in the Northern California county where he lived. He loved animals and helping all kinds of people. Most of all, he loved his mom Liz. For his whole life it had just been the two of them. Like his mom, Josiah was a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and was excited to go to Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State to see Dead & Company. On Friday June 7th, 2019, Josiah and a friend were traveling along Highway 97 on their way to see the concert when they stopped to help two people stranded on the side of the road. What happened next is every parent?s worst nightmare and would plunge Liz Hilderbrand into an abyss of pain as she desperately tried to find out what became of her son. Liz joins Laura and Lisa to tell Josiah?s story and describe her fight to bring his killers to justice.

We continue discussing the killings of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies, a young Australian couple who were allegedly murdered by a New South Wales police officer on February 19, 2024. As we review the timeline, Laura and Jim analyze the significance of the pre and post offence behavior of the alleged offender which include him making suspicious purchases, removing and moving the remains of Jesse and Luke, and possibly involving his friends and colleagues in his attempt to cover up the crime before turning himself into the authorities.

#495: The Murders of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies
26-year-old Jesse Baird, a vivacious Australian former television reporter, and 29-year-old Luke Davies, a beloved flight attendant for the Australian airline Qantas, were murdered in cold blood the morning of Monday 19th February. Their bodies were discovered by police in surfboard bags, covered with debris, on a remote property 126 miles south of Sydney on Tuesday 27th February.
Jesse and Luke had been dating for just a few months and were full of excitement for the future when they were allegedly shot dead by a member of the New South Wales police force, Senior Constable Beau Lamarre-Condon. Family and friends allege that he was stalking Jesse prior to the murder. Laura tells us about this case which has exposed serious concerns in the police media handling of the case, particularly regarding the outdated label ?crime of passion? being used. Jim and Laura analyze the timeline and the significant movements and behavior of the alleged offender, who is now in custody.

#494: Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton Killings in Alaska
We continue our conversation with Antonia Unaqsiq Commack a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples advocate in Alaska. Antonia is Inupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak and is a survivor herself of domestic abuse. Antonia is challenging the open letter to the community that the Kotzebue Chief of Police wrote addressing the suspicious deaths of Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton in Kotzebue, Alaska. The Chief?s letter tries to assure the public that the investigation into these cases has been thorough, but Antonia points out all the holes in that story. Laura fills us in on the background of the horrific domestic violence these women suffered at the hands of their intimate partners before their deaths.
The Kotzebue police have closed Jennifer?s case, refusing to investigate it as a homicide.

#493: Murdered Indigenous Women in Alaska
Who is killing the indigenous women of Alaska? Spoiler alert, it is not that hard to figure out if proper investigations had been done, yet time and time again, these victims? deaths are ignored, suspects are not questioned, evidence is not collected, autopsy reports are glossed over, known repeat offenders are not prosecuted, and on the rare occasions when they are prosecuted, judges are letting them go with less than a slap on the wrist. Joining us to discuss two such cases is victims? advocate Antonia Unaqsiq Commack of Missing and Murdered In Alaska, a group that often focuses on violence against Alaska Natives. Antonia is Inupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak. Antonia herself has had two close friends murdered by their intimate partners and since 2017 has devoted herself to shouting loudly to make the public aware of the injustices going on in her community. Antonia takes us through the deaths of two women in Kotzebue, Alaska - Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton -- who died under extremely suspicious circumstances and who need to get much more attention from those in power to deliver justice. "American Nightmare" streaming now, has been the #1 show on Netflix for the past few weeks. It is a story the Real Crime Profile team knows well. We interviewed Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn in June 2021 and they shared their incredible and harrowing story of how a predatory serial stalker and rapist upended their world and how they fought back for justice and to reclaim their lives.
In 2015, the couple were awakened in the middle of the night by lasers and a man wearing all black with a gun. Aaron and Denise were then bound and drugged. Denise was kidnapped, placed in the trunk of a car and driven to an isolated location. There she was raped twice and terrorized. The kidnapper demanded ransom from a traumatized Aaron who decided to go to the police. What happened next you will not believe. The Real Crime Profile team reviews "American Nightmare" and discusses how well it captures Denise and Aaron?s story as well as how it fits as a companion to their book ?Victim F?.

From the very start of her life, Natalia Grace has been passed around like a human football and exploited. From the moment of her birth in Ukraine when doctors encouraged her mother Anna Volodymyrivna Gava to give her baby up due to her diagnosis of dwarfism, Natalia has been denied a stable, loving home and instead been placed with people who had no business caring for her and had no capacity for loving her. Today we examine Natalia?s complex and convoluted case, made only more confusing by the docu-series ?The Curious Case of Natalia Grace?. We examine the many narrators in this story including Michael Barnett who along with his wife Kristine adopted Natalia, appeared to abuse her both physically and mentally, coercively controlled her and then bizarrely sought to prove Natalia was not a child, but an adult woman pretending to be a child, legally "re-aging" her. Jim and Laura analyze the evidence and try to discern who is telling the truth and what actually happened. We have a huge update on the killer just identified as responsible for at least two of the serial killings in the Colonial Parkway murders which occurred in the late 1980s in Virginia. Joining us to discuss the identification of fisherman Alan Wade Wilmer Sr. as the murderer of 20-year-old David Knobling and 14-year-old Robin Edwards are our good friends from Mind Over Murder podcast, Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley. Bill Thomas, whose sister Cathy Thomas? murder is considered part of the Colonial Parkway killings, has a lot to share about this suspect as well as how the FBI has framed his involvement in other murders. Bill has been dedicated to finding his sister?s killer for over 30 years. Police have confirmed they believe Alan Wade Wilmer Sr. to also be responsible for the 1989 rape and murder of Teresa Lynn Spaw Howell, 29. Will he be linked to more? #485: Amanda Knox Slander Trial in Italy | Part 2
We continue our discussion of Amanda Knox? upcoming retrial in Italy for slander against her former boss, Le Chic Bar owner Patrick Lumumba. When the police interrogated Amanda they told her to sign two police written statements, just hours apart. Amanda has always maintained she was not allowed an interpreter or to speak to a lawyer during that interrogation and that she was pressured to place Patrick Lumumba at the scene of the crime. There was a third statement Amanda wrote on her own, shortly after signing the previous two police-written statements, trying to explain her state of mind and her knowledge of the facts of the night Meredith was murdered. #484: Amanda Knox Returns to Court in Italy
Amanda Knox is headed back to stand trial again in Italy. But this time not for the murder of her former college roommate Meredith Kercher, who she was wrongfully convicted of killing in 2009 and later acquitted in 2015. Now, Knox is facing a re-trial for slander against Patrick Lumumba, a local bar owner in Perugia who she worked for at the time of the murder. Italian police say Knox named him as the prime suspect back when she was in police custody in 2007. Knox has always claimed it was the police themselves who mentioned Lumumba as involved in the murder and it was they who deliberately misinterpreted her text messages with him. Join us as we unravel this complicated aspect of the investigation and explain why Amanda is glad to be going back to Italy to finally clear her name.

#482: Meredith Kercher's murderer, Rudy Guede, Faces New Allegations of Rape and Assault | Part 2
We continue our discussion of Meredith Kercher's rape & murder by Rudy Guede, his recent parole and subsequent new allegations of rape and assault against him by an ex partner.
Laura and Jim zero in on the errors, omissions and outright fabrications by Italian authorities who handled Meredith's case so badly, allowing Guede to get a fast-tracked trial and a reduced sentence (from 30 years to 16 years which was further whittled down to 13 years for good behavior). Laura updates us on other cases of violence against women in Italy including the horrific & brutal murder of Giulia Cecchettin by Filippo Turetta which sparked an Italian reckoning over femicide.

#481: Meredith Kercher's murderer, Rudy Guede, Faces New Allegations of Rape and Assault | Part 1
In 2007, British college student Meredith Kercher was raped and brutally murdered (stabbed 47 times) by Rudy Guede in Perugia, Italy where she was studying on an exchange program. Though this case made international headlines, very few people recognize the name of the victim and even fewer know the name of her killer. Rudy Guede who received a shockingly reduced sentence for this horrific crime, was allowed lenient furloughs during his incarceration, and was paroled three years ago after only serving thirteen years. Recently there are new allegations of rape and assault against him made by his 23 year old girlfriend. While the case is under investigation, Guede is fettered only by a restraining order and not under house arrest nor any other monitoring despite his violent history. Why has he time after time been given so many indulgences?
While many may not recall Meredith Kercher?s name nor Rudy Guede?s there is one name everyone recognizes for all the wrong reasons in connection with this case and that name is Amanda Knox.
Amanda, who happened to be one of Meredith?s roommates at the time of her death, was wrongfully convicted of her killing. Though eventually exonerated after serving four years in an Italian prison, the white hot spotlight of attention both from the Italian police, the media and the public have followed Amanda since her release. Amanda has always worried that Guede (who maintains he is innocent) would hurt another woman once he finished out his sentence. Has her prediction come true? Join us for this discussion. We continue discussing the upcoming parole of Oscar Pistorius who murdered Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Laura reads from some of their text messages leading up to the murder that expose the coercively controlling and abusive nature of their intimate relationship. #478: Gabby Petito Update: Brian Laundrie's phone calls to his parents revealed
Laura gives us an update on the murder of Gabby Petito. Gabby was killed in August 2021 while camping in Wyoming by her then boyfriend Brian Laundrie who took countermeasures to try to fool Gabby's parents back in New York into believing she was still alive. We now know Laundrie may have involved his parents shortly after murdering Gabby into helping him perpetuate this lie. Join us as we discuss the terrible details. Laura poses the question everyone wants to know - now we know Brian called his Dad on August 29 and told him Gabby was 'gone' and he needed a lawyer, are criminal charges likely to follow? #477: Reeva Steenkamp?s Murderer, Oscar Pistorius, Gets Early Parole
Reeva Steenkamp, a 29 year old South African paralegal who graduated top of her class and also had a successful career as a model, was murdered in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013, shot multiple times by her then partner Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius, who at the time was an internationally known professional sprinter and national hero, claimed it was an accident, that he thought he had been defending himself against an intruder breaking into his home. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide with a term of only five years in prison and a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction. That verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa who convicted him of murder and increased Pistorius' prison term to 13 years and five months on appeal by the state. Now, to the shock and dismay of Reeva's family and loved ones, after only serving half of his sentence, Oscar Pistorius is going to be released on parole with a number of conditions. We revisit this case (which we covered in depth back in June 2016) and the complex circumstances surrounding Pistorius sentencing, Pistorius' contradicting statements as well as new details about what may have happened that terrible night.

A Survivor of sexual abuse by the Director of the scout camp where he worked, Dr. Kennedy has been instrumental in communicating with Survivors, advocating for their interests, and has testified in bankruptcy court. He also played a significant role in negotiating an agreement for the improvement of Scouting policies related to youth protection.
Tom Krumins is a passionate Executive Director leading the movement for childhood sexual violence Prevention, Healing, and Justice at Keep Kids Safe. https://www.keepkidssafe.us
He is committed to advancing trauma-informed solutions through policy, education, and community mobilization. As a Survivor of childhood sexual violence within the Boy Scouts, Tom is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of Survivors and the importance of advocacy at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels. He uses his deep knowledge of the trauma Survivors face and the institutional barriers they encounter to educate, inform, and create change. Tom has shared his story and insights openly with national media outlets, international training programs, documentarians, and a newsletter series. He is currently spearheading legislative efforts to reform civil statutes of limitations for child sexual abuse in his home state of South Carolina.

#474: Scout's Honor: Child Sex Abuse Inside The Boy Scouts of America | Part 2
After decades of ignoring thousands of child sexual abuse reports going on under their watch, the Boy Scouts of American finally had a reckoning in 2010 when a brave former scout came forward to file a lawsuit and testify. Kerry Lewis was only 11 years old when he was repeatedly sexually abused by an assistant scoutmaster named Timur Dykes. Even though Dykes had previously confessed to his superior, another scouting leader, to sexually abusing 17 boys in their troup, Dykes was allowed to continue with the organization and continue to abuse Kerry as well as others.

Today we interview Colette Martin who takes us through the harrowing night she was attacked by her former intimate partner, months after he had moved out from the home they shared, months after he had already started a new relationship with another woman. Colette, a mom with a young son, living in the New Brunswick region of Canada, didn?t know how to recognize the red flags in her ex-boyfriend and had no way of knowing he was a ticking time bomb who was planning to murder her, in front of her child, in plain sight of her parents? house who lived next door. Laura illuminates all of the warning signs of coercive control that he displayed. Amazingly, Colette survived and has gone on to help other vulnerable women and change laws in Canada.Colette is part of the ?She Is Your Neighbor? awareness project and short documentary created by the Women?s Crisis Service of Waterloo Region. In 1963, 18 year old Trisha Weir was on her way home from her job at a local Phoenix Arizona movie theater when she was abducted off the street, driven out into the desert and raped by Ernesto Miranda, a man who already had a history of crime including stalking and sexual assault. Police were able to zero in on Miranda, bring him into a line up where Trisha identified him and shortly thereafter he wrote a full confession to the crime without the presence of an attorney. Miranda was convicted, but later his verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court who found that his rights as had been violated. The film tracks Trisha?s journey as she tries heal from her trauma and still pursue justice. Join us for this important discussion.

#469: BONUS: 9 year old girl?s abduction in New York
A quick bonus episode to discuss the recent abduction in upstate New York of a 9 year old girl who thankfully was found 48 hours after she went missing. Jim and Laura weigh in on the behavior of the suspect in custody and if they think there was stalking involved in this case. While we normally do not mention the name of the offender if we can help it, in this case it is important to identify him ? Craig Nelson Ross, Jr., 47 of Ballston Spa, New York ? in the event there are more victims or near miss offenses out there unreported. We are not naming the 9 year old victim (though we know her name has been all over the news) because her parents have expressed the desire to have her life go back to being as normal as possible after this terrifying event. #468: Convicting A Murderer | Part 1
?Making A Murderer? the Netflix documentary about the 2005 murder of 25 year old Teresa Halbach near Green Bay, Wisconsin and the prime suspect in her killing Steven Avery took the world by storm in 2015 launching many viewer theories and passionate camps as to what may have really happened to the young photographer and who was responsible for her horrific murder. Avery, who had been wrongfully convicted of a violent sexual assault in 1985 was exonerated when DNA evidence proved another man was the true offender, and released in 2003 after serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Just two years later, Steven Avery would again be the focus of an investigation, this time for Teresa's murder. The filmmakers of ?Making A Murderer? Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who funded the docuseries themselves long before Netflix agreed to distribute it) have always said their premise was to follow Avery's murder trial as it unfolded for their cameras based on who they had access to. They have always said they were not there to investigate the crime nor to take a side, but to document the process of the justice system as it happened in front of them. But Ricciardi and Demos came under intense criticism by those who thought they left out the most important details of the case. Now a new docu-series ?Convicting A Murder? streaming on The Daily Wire website seeks to re-open the case file and show viewers what was missing. Join us as we review this engaging new series and look back on our original coverage of the original show. Real Crime Profile?s very first ever podcast was about Teresa?s murder and we have never forgotten her.

#465: The Murder of Kristi Johnson | Part 3
We finish our conversation with Cathy DeBuono, who talks about her near-miss experience with Victor Paleologus, the serial stalker, rapist, and murderer of Kristi Johnson.
Cathy tells us how Paleologus approached her at the same Los Angeles mall where he would target Kristi Johnson four years later. She describes the eerily similar ploy he tried to get her to meet him at a Hollywood Hills location on the pretext of a job interview. Fortunately for Cathy, she walked away unharmed, but she never forgot that encounter and when she heard about Kristi?s murder she came forward and was a witness for the prosecution in his trial. Since then Cathy has become an advocate for Kristi?s family in their efforts to keep this voracious offender behind bars and made it her mission to make sure all of the victims who were attacked by Victor Paleologus have their voices heard.

We continue our conversation with Terry Hall and Kirk Johnson, who are extremely concerned that Victor Paleologus, the man who murdered their daughter Kristi, will be granted his freedom despite a rampant history of violent crimes against women. Weighing in also is Cathy DeBuono, a former actress, who had a near miss with this offender and has been involved with supporting the Justice For Kristi campaign.
Laura warns about the dangers of not properly assessing an offender like this who is up for parole and what she thinks should be done before that hearing. Terry talks about the cases of other women who were violently attacked by Victor Paleologus and given a slap on the wrist, which allowed him to be free to murder Kristi. Kirk talks about being in the courtroom during the trial, hearing all the witnesses and observing the jury, and the backroom machinations of the defense attorney. He and Terry explain why they were convinced to agree to the plea deal offered to VP and the broken promises by the DA. Join us.

#463: The Murder of Kristi Johnson | Part 1
On Feb 15th 2003, Kristi Johnson, a bright 21 year old college student, was approached at a mall in Los Angeles by convicted rapist Victor Paleologus. She had no way of knowing he was not who he said he was, no way of knowing he had seven previous convictions and had just been granted parole. All she knew was this affable, helpful seeming man who said he was a movie producer started talking to her about the entertainment industry and offered her an opportunity to apply for a job. Kristi aspired to be part of the entertainment industry, not as an actress, but maybe in PR, maybe in other capacities, she didn't know yet, she was still learning the landscape of Hollywood but she was eager to work hard. She couldn't have known that he had hunted and attacked many women before. Paleologus targeted Kristi, lured her to an abandoned location in the Hollywood Hills, killed her and disposed of her body in a ravine. Now twenty years later, this killer is up for parole. Today we are joined by Kristi's parents, Terry Hall and Kirk Johnson who tell us of those excruciating days trying to find their missing daughter and how now they are being traumatized all over again as their daughter's murderer is up for an early parole. #462: Why We Believe Maya | Part 2
Laura & Jim continue their discussion with Andrea Dunlop, host of ?Nobody Should Believe Me? who has strong criticisms about the documentary ?Take Care of Maya? based on her own background with medical child abuse. Andrea casts doubts about Beate Kowalski?s behavior toward her daughter Maya, she has doubts about the doctors who treated Maya before her admittance to Johns Hopkins Children?s Hospital?in addition to doubts on Jack Kowalski?s motives for suing the hospital who separated his daughter from her family. Jim and Laura explain what they see as the deep flaws in the investigation into Beate, and the assumptions about the family's behavior. Laura and Jim examine the entire context and highlight the most important aspects of the case in their professional view.
We will post on our FB page several sources for our listeners to make up their own minds: (1) the transcript of the interview that Laura mentions that Detective Stephanie Graham conducted with Jack Kowalski about his wife Beate?s behavior and his daughter Maya?s illness; (2) Detective Graham?s deposition in which she admits her suspicion of the Kowalski's was totally based on what she learned from Dr. Sally Smith, the child abuse pediatrician; (3) the court ordered psychological evaluation of Beate Kowalski, which contains crucial written statements by another patient Jessica Stevens (and her mother Sarah Stevens) who was also treated by Dr. Kirkpatrick for CRPS , and who was also put into a medically induced Ketamine coma in the same clinic in Mexico overseen by Dr. Cantu. (He also treated Maya). The Stevens family knew Beate and Maya and have a lot of important observations.
Finally, in this episode, Andrea mentions the case of her sister Megan Carter, who was investigated for medical child abuse. #461: Why We Believe Maya - Deconstructing the case of Maya Kowalski with Andrea Dunlop, host of "Nobody Should Believe Me"
Laura and Jim interview Andrea Dunlop host of "Nobody Should Believe Me" a podcast about Munchausen by Proxy (also now referred to as Factitious Disorder.) In the UK this is known as Fabricated or Induced illness (FII). Andrea is a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children?s Munchausen by Proxy committee and the co-founder of Munchausen Support, a resource site for victims. Andrea has been outspoken in her criticism of Beate Kowalski, the mom at the heart of the documentary "Take Care of Maya" who fought so hard to find a treatment for her 9 year old daughter Maya?s rare condition of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Laura and Jim discuss the evidence Andrea claims to support her position that Beate abused Maya. Many experts in CRPS treated Maya and confirmed her diagnosis time and time again, as did her own pediatrician Dr. John Wassenaar who submitted a detailed affidavit and who observed Maya before, during and after her release from Johns Hopkins All Children?s Hospital. #460: Long Island Serial Killings | Part 3
There is so much more to discuss about the Long Island Serial Killings and the evidence against the suspect who is in custody for the murders of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy. In addition to the victims who were brutally murdered, there are other victims in the orbit of this case, if indeed Rex Heuermann is the killer. Asa Ellerup was married to Heuermann for 27 years. She has since filed for divorce but she and their two children are also caught up in his crime and their world has changed forever. Lisa asks Jim and Laura their expert opinions on where they think these victims were actually murdered, if they think the killer used an alternate private location before disposing of their bodies on and around Gilgo Beach Long Island. Laura probes the timelines and wonders if there are other victims far earlier than anyone knows, drawing from learning from other cases including serial killer Dennis Rader.

We continue delving into the Long Island Serial Killings cases recently in the news, as the investigations into the murders of many young women, a young man and a toddler have accelerated. There is one main suspect in custody and Jim and Laura weigh in on the significance of the pieces of evidence against him for at least 3 of these killings - that of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy. We also discuss the conflicts of interest that certain members of law enforcement may have had involving sex workers in this local area ? who may have been connected to some of these victims.

#458: Breaking News in the Long Island Serial Killing Case
Today we give an update on the newly identified remains of a woman found near the Fire Island Beach area of Long Island, New York. News broke on Friday August 4th when DA Raymond Tierney called a press conference at very short notice to report that this woman, previously known to police as "Fire Island Jane Doe" had been positively identified as Karen Vergata. She is one of at least eighteen other victims murdered in the Gilgo Beach/Jones Beach/Fire Island vicinity. Karen went missing on Valentine?s Day in 1996, last seen in Manhattan which is at least sixty miles away from where some of her remains were discovered. Is she connected to Rex Heuermann, the suspect arrested on July 13th charged with the murders of Amber Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy, three women who all went missing in 2009 and 2010 before their bodies were found along Gilgo Beach? Join us as we talk it out. Our thoughts go out to Karen's family and friends as they process this new information about their loved one.

#457: Take Care of Maya | Part 2
We continue our coverage of the case of Maya Kowalski, a 10 year old girl who was held against her family?s will at Johns Hopkins All Children?s Hospital in Florida for nearly three months while the doctors and staff wrongfully accused her mother Beate of medical child abuse and denied Maya the care she needed for CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). The Kowalski?s were not the only family traumatized by a pattern of coercive controlling behavior and abuse of power by certain members of this staff. For Beate Kowalski, their actions proved catastrophic and nearly destroyed this innocent family.

Breaking news and RCP jumps on a Bonus Ep to weigh in. For over a decade Long Island Police have been trying to solve what appeared to be the serial murders of several young women whose remains were found at Gilgo Beach. Finally just this past week, Architect Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested at his Manhattan office and arraigned in the deaths of three women: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello 27.
Police are still investigating the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, as well as other victims who may also be connected to Heuermann.
