One of the most iconic new elements introduced by Alien: Isolation ten years ago—at least judging by how often it's been referenced in the expanded universe and fan art—is the Working Joe.

Unlike their Hyperdyne competitors, Seegson Synthetics' androids are ... rudimentary, to put it mildly. Not only are they utilitarian and cheap, they are outright dangerous. Hilarious as they are terrifying, Working Joes are a major element of any Isolation playthrough.

There's a saying in Hollywood: if you want to get your film made, be able to pitch it in an elevator ride. The setup for No Man's Land, Christian Kennedy's mega-hit Alien fan film, is about as pitchable as it gets: "Battlefield I meets Aliens."

Of course, a pitch will only get you so far. The execution is where the real magic happens. And Christian's film—which is just under 30 minutes long and has already racked up nearly 4.5 million views—is a masterclass in execution.

With killer cinematography, great effects, period-accurate costuming, and some great xenos, No Man's Land has been a massive hit with Alien fans since its release just two months ago.

2023 was quite a year at the movies. "Barbenheimer" became a cultural phenomenon. Marvel lost its mojo. And a ten million-dollar subtitled Godzilla movie became the most successful live-action Japanese film in US history. 

But Godzilla Minus One is so, so much more than just a box office success story. It's a deeply human tale that feels urgently suited to our time in world history. It manages to be both terrifying and profoundly moving, with unforgettable performances, a rigorous attention to detail, and one of the great musical scores of the 21st century.

What if Aliens was never made? That's the question that starts off our final episode and roundtable of the year. In the eleven years since the release of Prometheus a lot has been said about the film. As we bring this Blomkamp miniseries to a close, we end in a place we never expected: one of empathy, appreciation, and understanding. It's easy to lose sight of the human behind the headline. Neill Blomkamp underwent some very public suffering during the events surrounding his unmade Alien film. And Ridley Scott, despite his prickly exterior, is a person with feelings and frustrations as well—and Alien: Covenant is a window into those frustrations.

A decade ago, Guillermo del Toro famously stopped his work on an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness because he felt Ridley Scott's Prometheus had beaten him to the punch. Scott himself was mum on the issue, but when Prometheus premiered in theaters it was clearly connected to ATMOM, whether Ridley (or Spaihts, or Lindelof) were public about it.

So what exactly is Prometheus' connection to Lovecraft's 1931 novella? Do they share story beats, or are there deeper philosophical connections between the two?

David Fincher's involvement with Alien 3 does not have a storybook ending. Unlike his predecessors Ridley Scott, and James Cameron, Fincher's work on Alien 3 would be remembered as one of the most troubled productions in cinema history. Charles S. Dutton's performance as Leonard Dillon in Alien 3 is one of those portrayals that seems almost star-crossed. With his thrilling speeches, deep humanity, and murky past, Dillon is a character who becomes more special the more time you spend with him—a character that makes us ask Big Questions, like what is redemption? In the interim, many of us remembered specific scenes we weren't sure were real until James Cameron gave his seal of approval on his original vision. There is a time shortly after the release of Prometheus and before pre-production on Alien: Covenant where things get ... murky. Thirty-five years ago—July 14, 1986—James Cameron’s Aliens lit up movie screens across the globe for the first time. In the decades since, Aliens has become a deeply beloved, immeasurably influential, genre-defining example of what great filmmaking looks like.

As we get ever closer to the 35th anniversary of Aliens' theatrical premiere, fans around the world find ourselves feeling a little nostalgic. Many of us were introduced to Aliens (or other films in the saga) by parents, aunts, uncles, etc. And many of us now, having grown to become parents, aunts, uncles ourselves, are in the wonderful position of being able to introduce it to kids ourselves.

The announcement of Alien leaving Dark Horse for Marvel sent shockwaves through fandom, and for good reason. After more than three decades with the venerable underdog publisher, Alien was going to an entertainment powerhouse.

Many of us felt like this was either very good news or very bad news. Either way, the announcement has had fandom on tenterhooks for the past year. Who would write these stories? What would they have to say? Would Marvel—and, by extension, Disney—understand Alien enough to get this right?

Well, we at Perfect Organism are delighted to bring you this wild, nearly two-hour interview with Phillip Kennedy Johnson, the man writing these comics—an interview that essentially serves as an extended "yes" to the question of whether Marvel knows what it's doing with our beloved franchise.

Phillip is a lifelong Alien nut with an abiding love for the property and a passion to get it right. Prometheus premiered at a curious time in Alien fandom. It'd been 15 years since the release of the previous canonical film in the main Alien continuity, and the internet was transitioning rapidly into something a lot more connected—and a lot more intense—than what it'd previously been.

It was an era of tightly guarded secrets, leaked photos, buzzing internet forums, and nascent social media groups. And one of the most active places for fans to engage was (and is) AvPGalaxy (avpgalaxy.net).

A lifetime ago—January 2020, to be exact—Dark Horse issued one of the most exciting press releases in Alien expanded universe history: Dan O'Bannon's original screenplay was getting a comic adaptation.

The creative team tasked with this extraordinary challenge was more than up to it. Writer Cristiano Seixas has been an integral part of the Brazilian comics scene for decades. Active in writing, illustrating, animation, and more, he's also the Creative Director of Ghost Jack Entertainment (a game studio) and the founder of Casa dos Quadrinhos School of Visual Arts in Brazil.

Along with his friend/longtime collaborator, the artist Guilherme Balbi, Seixas brings O'Bannon's script to luminous new life in this five-issue Dark Horse run.

It's not often we're taken completely by surprise these days. Usually, there's an inkling of something coming. News leaks. A company announces they've acquired rights to use the Alien license on Twitter. Alien's Instagram posts some teasers. You know the drill.

But a few months back, a whole ton of what-the-blessed-hell-is-going-on got dropped on fandom when a toy company many of us had never heard of started releasing some super colorful, super crazy designs reminiscent of the Kenner toys so many of us grew up with.

As we continue our year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of Alien, we've finally arrived at the man behind the camera: Sir Ridley Scott.

To say Scott was a bizarre choice to helm Alien would be putting it mildly. Virtually unknown outside of commercials and television—with just one feature film (an epic about Napoleonic War-era swordplay) to his name—Scott ended up being an almost impossibly good pick to direct this groundbreaking movie.

Jaime and Patrick explore Scott's roots—his youth in northern England, his years coming out of art school, his work for the BBC—and discuss how those life experiences helped shape him into the perfect director for one of the great films ever made. They also talk about the shoot itself, and how Scott's idiosyncrasies worked in his favor as he overcame the limitations of the studio system to craft a blockbuster that felt like an art film.
