The Real Question: Grandparents

We're taking a two week break between seasons of Harry Potter and the Sacred Text! While we're off, we thought we'd share a recent episode of The Real Question.

Casper wants to feel closer to his paternal grandparents. But there?s a problem: they?ve been dead for a few years now. Is there a way, as he grows older, for him to keep his grandparents an active part of his life? Drawing upon The Suitcase by Frances Stoner Saunders and Children and Art from the musical Sunday in the Park with George, Casper and Vanessa think through how grief changes over time.

Introducing: The Real Question

We're reaching the end of Casper's tenure here on Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, but never fear! You can still get your Casper and Vanessa fix over on our new show, The Real Question. Our first episode is out today, and Casper and Vanessa discuss all things Tooth Fairy.

After playing the Tooth Fairy for her two step-daughters, Vanessa is having doubts about the appropriateness of this supposedly silly childhood ritual. Drawing up a recent article about the Marquis de Sade and the song Super Trouper from Mamma Mia, Vanessa and Casper try to wade through the fears that a parent can have for their kids.

--

The Real Question is a weekly podcast exploring life?s questions through a surprising mix of pop culture and academic insight. Vanessa Zoltan and Casper ter Kuile learned in divinity school about the art of paying attention. By paying attention to very specific things in our lives, we can begin to see something true about big, universal questions. In this podcast, they turn that attention to a variety of everyday scenarios in their own lives to see what?s really at stake. Questions about the tooth fairy can really be about the fear we have for our children. Questions about driving can really be about what it means to be a good partner. Each week, Vanessa and Casper walk each other through the process of figuring out what their ?real? questions are in conversations with texts ranging from movie musicals to theological treatises. In this intimate, thoughtful podcast we explore how friendship can be a tool for living a more intentional life.

HPST Re-Run ? Friendship: Halloween (Book 1, Chapter 10)

The whole Harry Potter and the Sacred Text Team is busy this week running our summer camp, so we thought: what a perfect time for a throw-back episode!

This episode holds a special place in our hearts because it's the first time Casper and Vanessa had a real revelation about the books while recording. This is the chapter where Harry, Ron, and Hermione fight the troll and where the trio first become friends. It's an interesting moment to compare with where we are currently in Book 7.

So sit back, relax, and take a trip to yesteryear ? to a time when Vanessa and Casper were still living in the dorms, Ariana was still learning how to edit, and Trump was yet to be elected. We'll be back next week, reading Book 7, Chapter 13, The Muggle-Born Registration Commission, through the theme of Arrogance.
