Do you feel your brain is getting older? Senior moments coming early or feel absent-minded?

142: What You Should Know About Women's Brains

What should you know about women?s brains?

The historical conception that male brains are superior to female brains is finally being overturned?but while there is no difference in our intelligence, there are subtle structural differences in female brains that can heighten the risk of health conditions for women, including Alzheimer?s disease, migraines, and depression. Few people are aware of this, so raising awareness and helping people to feel more comfortable seeking assistance with these types of health concerns is incredibly important.

An international researcher in Alzheimer?s prevention, author of the incredible book Brain Food, and a nutrition expert and neuroscientist, today?s guest Lisa Mosconi has years of invaluable nutrition and neuroscience knowledge from a career spent working to prevent brain deterioration.

You can check out my previous episode with Lisa here: Episode 88: Eating For Your Brain with Dr. Lisa Mosconi

In this episode, we?ll explain the differences between female and male brains, including differences in hormones and health risks. We?ll explain some ways you can become more aware of women?s brain health, and explain what a typical brain scan might look like for a woman experiencing a decline in brain health. Finally, we?ll tell you why you should take care of yourself in the busiest decades of your life, and why you (or the women in your life) should never be ashamed of seeking out health treatment.

141: Little-Known Mental Fitness Exercise

How can you use math to build your mental fitness?

People often talk about wanting to increase their physical fitness?they want to be more flexible, agile, and have more energy, but what about being mentally fit? One of the greatest exercises we can do to build our mental fitness is math. Aside from boosting our brainpower, math can also build our confidence, make us feel capable, and help us to tackle obstacles in other areas of our lives.

You might know Danica from her role as Winnie Cooper in Wonder Years, but what you might not know is that in addition to her lifelong acting career, Danica is an internationally-recognized mathematician, New York Times best-selling author and advocate for math education.

In this conversation, we explain how you can build mental fitness through math, and gain confidence that nobody will be able to take from you. We?ll talk about how math can help you to overcome life?s obstacles and feel more capable. Lastly, we?ll tell how you can rebrand math so it is no longer something to fear.

138: Discovering Your Dominant Question

The process of thinking is nothing but asking and answering questions. Our thinking changes the shape of our lives, so the questions we ask ourselves matter, whether it?s ?how can I learn this?? or ?how can I get healthier?? Used properly, questions are a useful tool to take the knowledge and turn it into action.

You might associate complaining with negativity, but when used in the right way, complaints can be a powerful tool to improve our relationships, achieve results and effect meaningful change in the world around us. The key is learning how to do it right?which is why we have Guy here to teach us a simple formula to effectively bring up complaints in a way that will encourage positive resolution rather than unhelpful arguments.

If you have issues in your life that are bringing you discomfort, and you?ve previously been reluctant to bring them up with the people involved for fear of starting a conflict, today?s episode will help you negotiate that process with confidence.

136: How to Have Mental Longevity

The traditional story about aging is that as we age, we slow down, become trapped in our habits, and forget to play. The good news is that we can avoid this, and we can all learn to use our brains to change our age. Who doesn?t want to live longer? And not only longer, but better?

I?ve talked before on the podcast about the study of nuns published by Time magazine?all of them were living youthfully despite being aged 90 and above?and the secrets to their longevity were their gratitude, faith and their dedication to lifelong learning. They were lifelong learners?just like you and me!

I?ll take you through the 10 steps to healthy aging, and ask you to consider your progress on each step.

114: How to Undo Your Limiting Beliefs

How do you overcome and change limiting beliefs?

All behavior is belief driven. You can?t remember someone?s name if you believe you have a horrible memory. You can?t be a great reader or leader if you believe you are not. Or change procrastination if you believe you procrastinate.

So how do you deal with the more deeper invisible level of beliefs?

In today?s episode, I have my longtime dear friend, Shelly Lefkoe, with us to discover how we can change the deep underlying beliefs about ourselves.

Shelly Lefkoe is co-founder and President of the Lefkoe Institute, and the founder and Parenting the Lefkoeway. She has personally worked with thousands of individuals from around the world. Using The Lefkoe Method, she has helped these people eliminate issues as serious as eating disorders, phobias and depression as well as everyday problems like procrastination, shyness, fear of public speaking and the inability to form healthy relationships.

Tune in as we go over, what beliefs are and how we can tap into them to make long-lasting changes.

112: Mindful Leadership with Presidential Candidate - Tim Ryan

How do you become a more mindful leader? Whether you?re a student, parent or entrepreneur, how do you lead yourself and how do you lead others for a place of mindful connection and development?

Representative Tim Ryan recently announced his run for president and has a long history representing working-class families in Ohio. What you might not know about Tim is that in addition to his service as a Congressman, Tim is an advocate for mindfulness, meditation, and health and is the author of two books on mindfulness and healthy food.

Mindfulness and leadership are two of the most important words today. We?re living through fractured, disrupted times and calm thoughtful leaders will be essential in guiding communities back toward connectedness, imagination, and change. Unless we learn to reconnect with each other and work together, we will remain unable to solve the many problems facing us.

In this conversation, we discuss how mindfulness impacts our brains, and how adverse experiences impact the minds of younger generations coming up through our schools. We speak about how mindfulness has given the best leaders the strength to lead and maintain calm through challenging times and find the imagination to lead the country out of a challenge and towards change. Lastly, we talk about why social connectedness is so important in today?s fractured society and why the world needs you to take all the self-work you?ve been doing and start passing it on to your community.

104: How to Light Up Your Brain with Wes Pfiffner

Our bodies absorb light and use it as fuel for our bodies, but few of us have been taught about how to harness the power of light to boost our health and happiness.

Our natural environment deeply affects our bodies?our circadian rhythms are affected by sunlight and increasingly, negatively affected by the blue light so many of us spend hours looking at in the form of laptops and phones. This is problematic because of circadian rhythms regulate our body?telling us when to eat, sleep and produce hormones. We?ve talked a lot on the Kwik Brain podcast about the power of sleep for our brains, so this is an important issue to be aware of if we want to get the most out of our minds!

The Joovv red light therapy device is something I use on a daily basis to ensure I jump start my circadian rhythms and get enough light each day. Today?s guest, Wes Pfiffner, is one of the directors of the company, and he?s here to tell us how impactful red light therapy can be for our bodies and brains.

In this episode, we explain the benefits of light therapy, why being conscious of our circadian rhythms is so important, and why we need to watch our usage of blue light. To finish, Wes will give you some quick and simple to harness the power of light in your everyday life.

101: 4 Keys to Changing Your Behavior & Habits

How do you create change that lasts?

If you want a new result in your life, you have to do a new behavior. To change that behavior, you need a set of capacities, capabilities, and beliefs.

If you want something you?ve never had, then you?ve got to do something you?ve never done.

They say an average person has about 60,000-70,000 thoughts a day, but the problem is that 90-95% of those thoughts are the same thoughts they had yesterday and the day before that. In other words, if you want to do something brand new, you have to stop doing the same thing.

In this episode, I will share 4 keys to turn your ?I wish? to ?I will,? and make real changes in your behavior and habits.
