Katie Sturino, MegaBabe Founder & Body Positivity Advocate

Recorded live from her New York City apartment *pre-pandemic* Katie Sturino reveals just how she kickstarted a new kind of beauty empire with Megababe. The clean beauty brand for women of all shapes and sizes quickly skyrocketed to waitlist status with solution-oriented products that tackled beauty taboo ? while being cute enough for the topshelf, too. From the iconic Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafing Stick to the Bust Dust for boob sweat, we find out exactly how these ?niche? products broke through, even as retailers kept saying ?no?. (Stay tuned to the end of the episode for our personal reviews of the products!)

You may recognize Katie from her #MakeMySize Instagram posts ? unfiltered, dressing room selfies revealing the frustration in trying on limited sizes for the vast majority of women. Or, perhaps you?ve seen her #SuperSizeTheLook posts on how to emulate the style of the world?s most boldfaced names ? when you?re not a size zero. As a powerful voice in the online body inclusivity community, Katie gets candid about the reactions she?s gotten, both from industry insiders and from her 500K+ followers too often left out of the fashion conversation.

But first, Katie traces the origin story behind her own epic career path, rising through the ranks of fashion PR at Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana before tossing it all in to start her own business at a young age. A fateful firing, a dog named Toast, and a humble style blog ? you?ll hear all the twists and turns leading up to the Megababe movement.

P.S. You can hear more from Katie on her podcast, Boob Sweat where she dives deep on topics like body image, anxiety, divorce and fertility.

We?ve got Ryan Trygstad on the line, the New York-based celebrity hair pro whose clients include Julianne Moore, Emma Roberts, and Kelly Ripa. (Look out for his new salon, Mark Ryan, opening in New York?s Chelsea neighbourhood when the Covid-19 crisis is all over!)

The #DamnGood Hot Hair Tools For A Salon Look At Home

It?s pretty much scientifically proven by now: good hair days really do make us feel better. With that in mind, we?re dedicating this entire episode to the hair tools that truly deliver post-salon happiness (in the comfort and safety of your own home, tbh.) First off, we put the new Dyson Corrale Straightener to the test, and reveal whether this highly anticipated innovation is really worth the hefty price tag (!!).

Plus, meet the under-the-radar Canadian brand of hair tools said to be the first to offer the high heat and performance of a plug-in, with zero cords. Then, we test out the Drybar Double Shot Blow-Dryer Brush, to see if it can measure up against the OG (and far more affordable) Revlon Salon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer ? already a viral sensation. Auto curling irons that bake your curls like an oven, multi-pronged stylers that promise mermaid waves ? we?ve got your every hot tool desire in this all-about-hair episode!

Jill and Carlene take New York City! In today?s episode, we sit down with Zanna Roberts Rassi, Milk Makeup co-founder and fashion-editor-at-large for Marie Claire.  You may recognize Zanna in her role as E! We?re tracing the origin story behind Milk Makeup, the cool, vegan beauty brand built for Generation Z. Find out how a high fashion photo studio in NYC?s Meatpacking District served as the ultimate inspiration behind all of the products, from the best-selling Milk Makeup KUSH Mascara ? the first to tout cannabis sativa seed oil in makeup ? to the Insta-worthy lucite packaging, to the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer that finally converted Carlene to using a primer!

Tune in as Zanna spills the details on Milk Makeup?s latest venture into the world of skincare, with its first ever moisturizer and cleanser. Why Bite Beauty Founder Susanne Langmuir is Banking on Waterless Beauty Next

Today we?re speaking to Bite Beauty founder and serial entrepreneur Susanne Langmuir. As a product development guru, Langmuir succeeded where others couldn?t, creating bright, poppy shades that could measure up to the M.A.C?s and the NARS? of the world, in earth-friendly formulas ? and don?t forget the brand?s best-selling Agave Lip Mask that beauty editors stocked up on by the tube.

In this episode, we?ll update you on how Bite Beauty?s parent company, Sephora-backed Kendo Beauty, is ushering in a new, all-vegan era following Susanne?s departure from the company over two years ago. Then, Susanne fills us in on her next, forward-thinking act: waterless beauty. You?ll meet the debut product, aN-hydra The Powder of Youth No. 1, a water-activated microbiome cleansing powder that harnesses rice powder and pomegranate enzymes to slough away dead skin cells without stripping away ?good? bacteria. (Plus, we weigh in with our personal review!)

Find out what Susanne envisions a waterless beauty routine could look like in the not too distant future, and why ?waterless? is so key to shrinking our vanity footprint. But first, we?ll take you way back to before Bite Beauty even existed, to some of the inspiring entrepreneur?s first steps ? and missteps ?  into the wide world of beauty.

Meet The Power Siblings Behind ColourPop, KKW Beauty, Kylie Cosmetics & Tati Beauty (Their First Podcast Ever!)

Welcome to our milestone, 100th episode!! Can you believe?! Our baby girl?s a centenarian already. Today we?re harkening back to our origins with an epic #foundersrule tale, featuring a brand leading the future of beauty as we enter a new decade. Meet John and Laura Nelson, the siblings behind Seed Beauty, a beauty incubator that?s launched mad successes like ColourPop, Kylie Cosmetics, KKW Beauty, and most recently, Tati Beauty by mega influencer Tati Westbrook.

In today?s episode, we visit Seed Beauty?s HQ in Oxnard, California, to peep the direct-to-consumer brands capable of taking a single customer request from concept to creation in just five days!!! John and Laura reveal the answers to the question on everybody?s mind: how is it possible to deliver high quality products at such a low price, so fast? Case in point: Jill and Carlene?s fave Super Shock Shadows from ColourPop ? gorgeous cream-to-powder pigments that sell for just $6 bucks.

In their first podcast ever, John and Laura trace the story behind how Seed Beauty came to be ? pivoting the family business from one of the largest outside suppliers for global beauty brands to a vertically integrated platform launching its own brands. We get the juice on how a certain Kardashian family spun their warehouse into overdrive, and you?ll hear some hints on what this industry power player has cooking up next.

Welcome to our final podcast #crossover of the year. In today?s episode, we?ve got none other than Whitney Port in the house! The style-setting mama has come a long way since the 2010?s reality TV hit, The Hills. Firstly, there?s her podcast, With Whit, where her heart-to-heart convos have kept her 1.5M-strong fanbase tuning in on the regular. In this episode, Whitney reflects back on the realities of reality television, and how self-care can be as simple as saying ?no.? Plus, since Whitney is a fellow skincare obsessee, we find out the exact secrets to her glowing skin, including the pro treatments and the #damngood products lining her top shelf right now.  And in true podswap fashion, you can find your humble Breaking Beauty hosts over on With Whit?s feed this week, where we discuss our own beauty faves of the season, including our most trusted skincare musts.

Sensitive subject matter alert: In today?s interview, we wanted to let you know that Whitney discusses her personal experience with a miscarriage - as we know this is a sensitive subject for many people, we wanted to give a heads up that is part of today?s conversation.

Meet Urban Decay's Co-Founder Wende Zomnir

Meet Wende Zomnir, co-founder of Urban Decay, the 90s makeup brand that?s as relevant today as it was in its graffiti-grunge heyday. In today?s episode, the Texas-born pageant girl, Mom and surfer recalls how frustration with the candy-pink facade of the beauty biz drove her to start a rebellious cosmetics company that was years ahead of its time with out-of-the-crayon-box bold eyeshadows, blue lipsticks and all-gendered, near-black nail polishes to mark its initial lineup.

We also get the incredible back story behind *the* NAKED palette that helped propel Urban Decay to the top of the beauty game (estimates are that they have topped 1 billion dollars in sales of just that one palette since it launched in 2010!)

The Original Makeup Eraser Founder Lexi McCarthy

This week we?re delivering the damn good story behind one of beauty?s biggest innovations, The Original Makeup Eraser! Accidental inventor Lexi McCarthy dishes the dirt on the O.G. reusable polyester cloth that broke the beautysphere by removing all traces of makeup with get this - no cleanser or chemicals whatsoever.

You?ll hear all about how busy mom of four Elexis McCarthy (aka Lexi) discovered her sustainable beauty invention that?s sold over 5 million units since it launched at a Bridal Show back in 2013. (Just one Makeup Eraser is equivalent to 3,600 disposable makeup wipes, and lasts for up to five years.)

We find out just how the heck this magical cloth *actually* works to remove even waterproof makeup; the reason Demi Moore claimed it saved her hyper-sensitive skin in a recent (unpaid) get-unready-with-me video; plus, major scoop on the brand?s next innovation - something *so big* Sephora is calling it just as ?disruptive? as the original game-changing cloth.

In fact, we?re ?lasering? in on the top 3 skin treatments she most often uses to maintain the flawless faces of Tinsel Town?s A-list.

You?ll learn the key differences between LED treatments, lasers and micro currents, including what to expect post-procedure ? and how to know when you?ve gone too far. And for those of you who don?t have the budget for spendy treatments? Don?t worry, Shani?s got you covered with the specific names of machines you can use at home. Better yet, you?ll hear all about her own skincare routine, including her absolute obsession with retinol, a new product guaranteed to make your legs glow and a recent discovery she?s loving to smooth those stubborn, rough bumps on arms.

Ep. 85 Best New Foundations With Red Carpet Pro Mélanie Inglessis

We mentioned in last week?s episode that there were SO MANY foundation launches this season that the whole topic requires its own dedicated episode! But we also wanted to deliver some really practical tips for how to shop for and apply foundation, so today?s Glow Down guest is red carpet makeup pro Mélanie Inglessis. With clients like Game of Thrones star Lena Headey and modern day ingenue Taylor Russell, Mélanie lends her very French approach to foundation application to produce that au natural, I-didn?t-try-too-hard look ? the complete opposite of the Instagram beat face.

Mélanie shares the skincare secrets to landing the smoothest, most believable end result, as she opens her professional kit to reveal the go-to foundations she uses to glam up clients for Hollywood events. Then, we put a handful of fall?s buzziest fall foundations to the test as Mélanie swatches Kat Von D, Fenty and RMS LIVE on the mic. Find out which winning formula Mélanie decides she needs to add to her own kit, stat. And tune in to the very end when Jill and Carlene offer up their own favourites they plan to wear all season long.

Don?t forget to make our hotline bling! Leave us a voicemail at 844-227-0302 anytime with questions, requests, comments? we?d love to hear from you.

Ep. 83 Meet Kilian Hennessy, Founder of By Kilian Fragrances

Today we take you inside the mind of French fragrance founder Kilian Hennessy, who launched his range of luxe scents, By Kilian, in 2007. Find out why his bold gourmand blend, Love Don?t Be Shy, is Rihanna?s ride-or-die perfume (it?s sold out in every store around the world!) We also introduce you to the all-time best-seller, Good Girl Gone Bad, a white floral that comes in a Serpentine-embellished, lacquer clutch. Plus, Kilian spills all on his next creation launching this month ? his biggest departure from the 35 existing fragrances he?s created to date. But that?s not all. Last year, Kilian introduced the world to scented lipsticks! Listen to the end to find out whether more perfumed cosmetics are to come?

If the name sounds familiar, Kilian Hennessy is indeed of Hennessy ilk. Here, the dapper Frenchman recalls his family?s history starting out in cognac, which led to the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) empire. Brushes with famous perfumers, intimate details working with a bad boy designer, and the real reason Kilian refused to work for big fragrance companies ? whether you love perfume or not, you?ll not want to miss the origin story behind the sleeper label unafraid to make a big statement.

Ep. 82 Clear Skin Secrets With Dr. Pimple Popper (aka Dr. Sandra Lee)

Acne positivity ftw? and yet, many still struggle with acne and self esteem. So much so that we felt it was high time to dedicate an entire episode to the topic. And who better to be our guest than Dr. Sandra Lee, aka Dr. Pimple Popper herself!? The dermatologist?s Youtube videos have gone so viral amongst ?popaholics?, she even has her own show on TLC. Perhaps you?ve seen one of her live-extraction videos, which have earned up to 46 million views. (Is there such a thing as pimple porn?) Or maybe you?re one of her 3.5 million Instagram followers, who tune in for ?exploding lava? and accidentally learn something important about skin in the process.

In today?s episode, Dr. Sandra Lee schools us on what you can do in-office and at home to make a visible difference in acneic skin. Then, stay tuned as she sheds some light on how to tackle acne and aging at once. Finally, Dr. Sandra gives us the skinny on what?s in her own beauty cabinet at home. But not before your humble hosts discuss the pro?s majorly accessible skincare line, SLMD Skincare, available at Target as of this summer.

Ep. 79 Glossier Founder Emily Weiss (Re-Release)

We?re on a bit of a summer holiday, but by popular demand we?re bumping this previously released chat to the top of your feeds. She's the Founder and CEO to watch, and she started a revolution with Glossier, a millennial beauty brand that's commanded line-ups around the block with its era-defining pink-and-white packaging and its inclusive, raw beauty campaigns. But most importantly, why is Glossier's Boy Brow the number one best-seller, exactly? We weigh in with our review of the most iconic product. Plus, don't miss Emily's personal beauty hacks?and what she wore to our interview. And finally, hear from the Glossier fan girls IRL, who we turn the mic over to in this revealing, femmes-first episode.

Meet Chris Appleton, the hairstylist to Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and JLo and card-carrying member of the glammiest of glam squads (that gang also includes Mario Dedivanovic aka Makeup by Mario.) Case in point: Ariana Grande?s snatched ponytail, Kim?s sexy summer bob and the neon green hair trend courtesy of one of his plethora of candy-coloured wigs.

Tune in to hear Chris? master tips on how to put in extensions without any of the tell-tale signs (that ?shelf?, ugh), the exact steps to achieving glass hair and what to do about summer frizz. Plus, Chris tells us a little behind-the-scene story about how he chased Katy Perry around with a leaf blower for her Never Really Over video, and the reason he used a coat hanger to get her soft-focus 70s curls. And finally, listen until the end when Chris gets personal, to find out what inspired him to get into the hair industry in the first place.

In today?s episode, Carlene and Jill discuss the merits of these latest marketing campaigns that (surprise!) are still trying to sell you a new razor. First we zoom in on Billie, the Serena Williams-backed company that?s leading the charge with its #projectbodyhair initiative that reinforces the fact that shaving is a choice.

We also break down the meaning of the ?pink tax? and what some brands are doing to fire back. Next, we take a look at the industry giants duping the indie brands with radically different ads featuring women of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and skin conditions compared to the svelte, pale and completely hairless models of years past.

Full disclosure: Carlene and Jill still shave, wax and gadget their way to a hair-free aesthetic (in some body areas, anyway).

In this Damn Goods episode, Jill test drives the newest offerings in drugstores, including innovations that promise you can shave up and down, not to mention side-to-side. Meanwhile, Carlene gets down with some chic new safety razors that lean into zero waste. (Given that two billion plastic razors end up in landfills every year, you?ll definitely think twice next time about ever reaching for a disposable again!) In-grown hairs? We got you with the winning solutions on that front, too?

Glow Recipe co-founders and Shark Tank alums Christine Chang and Sarah Lee had no idea their little online store, offering a curated assortment of Korean beauty products, would explode into the multi-million dollar business it is today. Now, Glow Recipe is a Korean skincare company in its own right, selling out at Sephora on the regular. Ep 73 - The #DamnGoods: The Only Face Sunscreens You?ll Need This Summer, Tested

?I?m so pumped to put on face sunscreen!!?, said nobody ever. But the truth is, once you find the Holy Grail that you don?t actually mind wearing under makeup all summer, it?s truly the best anti-aging cream you could ever buy ? and probably the cheapest, TBH. That?s why Jill and Carlene tested over 20 of the buzziest face sunscreens on shelves right now, and at the end of this episode, they reveal their top five favourites.

But first, time to phone a friend! Meet skin therapist extrordinaire Dija Ayodele, founder of The Black Skin Directory in London. Dija explains why every skintone needs to wear sunscreen (not just us pasty pale types!) and she shares her very best SPF tips (like why do you need a facial sunscreen instead of moisturizer with SPF, anyway? And what step do you put sunscreen on in your skincare routine?). Find out Dija?s picks for the best face sunscreens for black skin that she uses herself.

In this skin-saving Damn Goods episode, Carlene and Jill dig into their beauty editor handbook to share some Sunscreen 101, like the meaning of broad-spectrum sunscreen and the difference between chemical and physical formulas. Then, stay tuned as they deliver the Coles Notes on this year?s jaw-dropping Consumer Reports sunscreen study, like the sad fact that very few sunscreens actually live up to their claims. Find out which ones made their top five list as well as your hosts! Read more on the Breaking Beauty Podcast blog including the complete list of all 20 face sunscreens tested.

Ep. 72 #TheGlowDown: Debunking Natural Deodorant Myths; Plus How to Find One That Really Works For You

Did you ever wonder ?should I make the switch to natural deodorant?? There?s a lot to unpack with this topic so we partnered with Schmidt?s Naturals founder Jaime Schmidt to debunk the biggest myths around natural deodorant and how to find one that really works for you.

She first started selling her hand-crafted deodorants, formulated without aluminum or artificial fragrances at a farmer?s market in Seattle in 2010; fast-forward nearly a decade later and she?s now rolling out to almost every mass-market retailer and just announced a new partnership with Justin Bieber (!!) for a collaboration called Here + Now, expected sometime in late 2019.

We debunk loads of myths with Jaime and then stay tuned to the end for some #damngood reviews where we put a bunch of all natural deodorants for women to the test including baking soda-free versions.

Ep. 71 MAC Cosmetics Co-Founder Frank Toskan (Re-Release)

By popular demand, we sat down with legendary co-founder Frank Toskan, to hear every detail about how the mother of all beauty companies,  M.A.C Cosmetics, came to be. With its unforgettable, original tagline: "All Ages, All Races, All Sexes," M.A.C was waaay ahead of its time, tapping into a culture completely foreign to the stalwart beauty brands lining store shelves when it launched in 1984.  Jill and Carlene recall the M.A.C beauty products that helped form their youths (hands up if you wore Twig Lipstick!). Plus, we remind you of the brand's ultimate best-sellers like Ruby Woo Lipstick (2,900 of their made-in-Canada lipsticks are sold everyday around the world) and their epic foundations, which offered nearly 40 shades decades before Fenty Beauty came along.

Then, Frank takes us way back, on coming to North America as a young immigrant, with little more than a children's suitcase and a few small trinkets inside. Beauty history buffs will want to hear the story of Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo ("Frank & Frank" as the two founders would become known) partners in life and business until Frank Angelo's passing in the 1990's. And finally, the origin story on how Frank Toskan came to compose early M.A.C prototypes using nothing more than craft store supplies in his Toronto kitchen.

Plus, we got alllll the juicy celebrity moments that helped catapult M.A.C to household name status (a young Lady Gaga, Madonna and Linda Evangelista were all involved). Don't miss the rebellious acts that had department stores up in arms, like giving out condoms at beauty counters (mon dieu!) We also go deep on VIVA Glam, the unparalleled giving-back program that's earned a whopping $480M for M.A.C's AIDS Fund, including a sneak peek on an academic book on the topic (launching just in time for VIVA Glam's 25th anniversary next year). So, what's Frank Toskan up to now? We've got the scoop on his next indie startup, called Impact Kitchen, that tastes as good as it is for you.
