Eid Mubarak! | Steadfastness | Part Four

Eid Mubarak, beloved brothers, and sisters!

Through this month, we have been able to see the dedication we can have in our devotion and in our abstaining from that which is displeasing to Allah SWT. Let us take these skills we developed with us onward in our journey.

May Allah SWT accept our fasting and allow us to remain steadfast.

"Surely those who say, ?Our Lord is Allah,? and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them, ?saying,? ?Do not fear, nor grieve. Rather, rejoice in the good news of Paradise, which you have been promised" (41:30)

Addictions: Dr. Omar Talks Substance Abuse, Importance Of Role Models, & The Nature Of Intoxicants

In this week's episode, I discuss with Dr. Omar Husain holding a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is also a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, thus making him very familiar with mental health, substance abuse, and the nature of addiction. His knowledge of the Islamic and social sciences makes him uniquely equipped to address contemporary issues such as the topic of addiction facing the Muslim community.

In this episode, we seek to break the silence and shed light on this unfortunate but very real problem within our communities. We dive into intriguing questions such as what differentiates an unhealthy behavior from an addiction? How do people become addicted to something? How can parents prevent their children from substance abuse through modeling and open communication? How should families respond to a relative with an addiction?  How we as an Ummah should approach this crisis to support our brothers and sisters struggling with the issue of addiction? & Much more.

Disability & Inclusion: Ummi Hussein Talks Stigmas Within Our Community, Accessibility, & Advocacy

In this week's episode, I discuss with Ummi Hussein, who has worked with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for 13+ years. During these years, she has become increasingly aware of the lack of support and assistance available to people with special needs and their families in our communities. Including the lack of inclusion and the inaccessibility of many of our programs, mosques, and Islamic schools for people with special needs.

This drove her to start an initiative known as Garabsii, which advocates and promotes inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Inspired by the Somali word that means lending a hand/support, Garabsii was formed to do just that.

In this podcast, we talk about what led her to do this line of work, her interactions with those with special needs, stigmas within our communities, and the issues we need to collectively address as an ummah.
