Pork Chop Hill (1959)

This week we examine the 1959 Korean War movie 'Pork Chop Hill', it was chosen by our fantastic Patreon supporters in this month's Patreon Pick, you can join the supporting cast for as little as £2.50 and have your say each month (just one of the perks we have on offer)! Pork Chop Hill sees Gregory Peck lead a company of US soldiers in one of the final battles of the Korean War.

Directed by Oscar winner Lewis Milestone the film is one of the classic American combat films with strong casting and great action sequences that elevate this film over many of its contemporaries.

Windtalkers (2002)

This week we cover John Woo's 'Windtalkers' the big budget MGM-backed blockbuster that famously flopped at the box office being panned by critics at the time of release in 2002.

Starring Nic Cage and Christian Slater as USMC sergeants tasked with looking after Navajo Codetalkers played by Adam Beach and Roger Willie, during the battle of Saipan in 1944. Despite its huge scale and attention to detail, the film fails to successfully tell the story of the bravery and sacrifice of the Navajo Codetalkers.

Join us as we attempt to unravel the missed opportunities of this failed epic.

Wolves of War (2022)

This week we take a look at 'Wolves of War' a new British war film starring Ed Westwick, Matt Willis & Rupert Graves. The plot sees a crack Commando team sent behind German lines in 1945 to rescue a nuclear scientist from captivity. Featuring impressive set pieces for a film of its size and some great performances from the cast.

The film harkens back to the Commando bookesque B-Movies of the 1950s/60s. We were lucky enough to receive an early copy of the film from Signature Entertainment so we could give you our thoughts in the week of the film's DVD release.

The Rebels of PT-218 (2021)

This week we cover 'The Rebels of PT-218' from the infamous 'Asylum' Film studio known for their mockbusters and cult b-movies. The film charts the tale of a US Liberty ship tasked with taking on a German gun battery holding up the allied invasion of Italy in 1943, yes you read that right.

Pulling from recent hits such as 'Greyhound' and other memorable naval films such as 'The Caine Mutiny' PT-218 attempts to hit the same highs as its peers but just seem so to fall flat on every front.

The Eight Hundred (2020)

This week we examine The Eight Hundred a recent Chinese spectacular which tackles the the defence of Sihang Warehouse, during the battle of Shanghai in 1937. Directed by Guan Hu and starring Huang Zhizhong, Oho Ou, Jiang Wu, Zhang Yi, Wang Qianyuan, Du Chun, Vision Wei, Li Chen, Yu Haoming, Tang Yixin, and Zheng Kai. While their are strong performances they're largely lost in the edit and the film's saving grace is its spectacle. While fascinating to see a film about an intriguing battle of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which is often forgotten in the West, the film looses cohesion, likely due to Chinese government interference, and is slightly marred by latent propaganda which is woven into the story of a battle which predates the Chinese Communist Party's rise to power.

The PIAT in Film: Bring Up The PIAT!

This week we have a very special episode where we tap into a topic close to Matt's heart, the PIAT. Matt wrote a book about the PIAT, or Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank, in 2020 and continues to research its history. One of the most interesting aspects of the PIAT is its unique cultural history, having been portrayed in a plethora of films spanning over 70 years. Most famously it was heralded, literally, when Anthony Hopkins as Lt. Colonel Frost in A Bridge Too Far shouted 'BRING UP THE PIAT!' A line which has become iconic. But there's so much more to the PIAT's onscreen career!

It Happened Here (1964)

In 1940 Britain was overrun and became just another country occupied by Nazi Germany. At least that's what happened in Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo's 1964 film 'It Happened Here'. The film follows Pauline, a nurse as she is forced to choose between resistance and collaboration. Made over 8 years by two exceptionally young filmmakers 'It Happened Here' is an impressive and thought provoking film.

In this week's episode we examine one of the most ambitious amateur films of its era and delve into the fascinating production, performances and story of 'It Happened Here'.

303 Squadron (2018)

This week we examine a Polish film 303 Squadron (Dywizjon 303) with Jennifer Grant, a postgraduate researcher focusing on the Polish Armed Forces in the West during the Second World War. With Jenny as our wingman we discussed the nuances and missed opportunities of this film which follows the exploits of the RAF's first operation fighter squadron made up of Polish pilots. Immortalised first in 1969's The Battle of Britain and also revisited in another 2018 film Hurricane, 303 Squadron has a fascinating history but we ask the question - does this film do them justice?

This week we dive into a pair of British Army training films Fighting In Woods (1982) and Soviet Encounter (1983) with Dr. Kenton White - an expert on the Cold War British Army. These well-made films show a potential (and somewhat optimistic) scenario of how the British Army would have fought the Warsaw Pact if the Cold War had ever gone hot!
