S3 Ep162: Maya Kowalski: The Court Rules in Favor Of....(Part 3)

Maya Kowalski was ten years old when her father brought her to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in October of 2016. The previous year, Maya had been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which caused her excruciating pain. Consistent therapy and ketamine treatments had gotten Maya?s condition under control, but she would have flare ups from time to time, and one of these flare ups brought her to the emergency room at All Children's Hospital, complaining of pain in her stomach. Maya would remain at the hospital for the next several months, against the wishes of herself and her parents, lawyers would later say. Her mother Beata Kowalski was accused of neglect and medical abuse, and by the time Maya was finally allowed to go home, her mother was dead, having taken her own life after being forbidden from seeing her sick daughter for 87 days. Maya?s family would go on to sue Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, claiming it?s actions led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life, devastated that she could not see her daughter and that she was being accused of abusing Maya. The Kowalski family also alleged that Maya was medically kidnapped, battered and abused while in the hospital?s care. This lawsuit would bring to the light deeper issues at Johns Hopkins, issues that affected far more than the Kowalski family and lead many of us to ask the question; if you can?t trust those who take an oath to do no harm, who can you trust?

S3 Ep156: Crystal Rogers: A Family Affair? (Part 2)

On July 3rd, 2015, 35 year-old mother of five Crystal Rogers disappeared from her hometown of Bardstown, Kentucky. At the time of her disappearance, Crystal was living with her children and her boyfriend, local businessman Brooks Houck, who also happens to be the last person who saw her before she vanished, never to be seen again. On July 5th, Crystal?s maroon 2007 Chevy Impala was found abandoned at mile marker 14 on the Bluegrass Parkway. The keys were in the ignition, Crystal?s cell phone and purse were still in the car, and there did not appear to be any signs of a struggle, but no one who knew Crystal could understand why she would just get out of her car instead of using her phone to call for help, and the situation became more suspicious when Crystal?s family discovered that even though her boyfriend Brooks had not heard from her over night, he had not called to report Crystal missing, and he didn?t seem concerned about her whereabouts at all. What would follow was an investigation that uncovered some shady activities hiding beneath the idyllic small town appeal of Bardstown, Kentucky, and two more deaths that had many people wondering if it was all connected back to Crystal Rogers.

S3 Ep152: Arne Johnson: Demonic Defense (Part 2)

In the darkest corners of the human psyche, evil can take root. It can lurk, hidden, waiting until it compels you to commit unspeakable acts. 'The Devil Made Me Do It' is a sinister tale of possession, exorcism, and a chilling courtroom battle. Join us as we delve into the abyss of the supernatural, where demons walk among us, and innocence is just a facade. Prepare yourself for a journey into the heart of darkness, if you dare...

In 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson pleaded not guilty to the gruesome murder of his landlord and friend, 40 year old Alan Bono. Initially, the Brookfield Connecticut Police claimed the motive for this murder appeared to be connected to a jealous love triangle, but within days, a bizarre story began to emerge, told mostly by Ed and Lorraine Warren, self-professed demonologists. The Warren?s professed their belief that Arne had been possessed by an evil entity when he had stabbed Bono more than 20 times.

S3 Ep148: Shad Rock Thyrion: Taylor Schabusiness' Insanity Plea (Part 2)

On February 23, 2022, in the early morning hours, Tara Pakanich was sleeping at her home in Green Bay, Wisconsin, when suddenly, she heard a slam from the storm door. Tara wasn't too worried because she thought it might be her son's friend, Taylor Schabusiness, leaving. She got out of bed and noticed that the basement light was on. Curious, she decided to go downstairs to see if her son, 24 year old Shad Thyrion, was still there or if he had left with Taylor. Upon reaching the basement, Tara searched for Shad but couldn't find him. Just as she was about to return upstairs, something unusual caught her eye - a black five-gallon bucket placed on the floor right next to the staircase, concealed by a towel. Tara lifted the towel, and what she discovered was beyond anything she could have ever expected. It was her son?s severed head.

S3 Ep144: Mischelle Lawless: The Man in the Red Hat (Part 5)

In the early morning hours of November 8th, 1992, 19-year-old nursing student Mischelle Lawless was found dead, just outside Benton, Missouri, on the side of Interstate 70. Investigators claimed the evidence suggested Mischelle had fought for her life, ran from her attacker and was pursued and caught before being returned to her car where she was shot three times in the back of the head. After questioning Mischelle?s boyfriend and friends, the case went cold until April 7th of 1993, when 17 year old Josh Kezer was arrested and charged with the murder of Mischelle Lawless. Kezer?s arrest was based on information provided to police by two jailhouse informants, and supporting testimony of a witness who claimed to see Mischelle and Josh arguing at a party the night of her murder, as well as another witness who placed Kezer at the scene of the crime. Despite the lack of physical evidence and the questionable credibility of the witnesses and informants, Josh Kezer was found guilty of second degree murder and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, sixteen years later Josh Kezer was exonerated when discovered that the eyewitness placing Kezer at the scene had changed his account of that evening multiple  times. Kezer sued for wrongful conviction and won.

Try our coffee!! - www.CriminalCoffeeCo.com and use code "Back2School"

On the morning of June 4th, 2010, seven year old Kyron Horman was brought to his elementary school by his stepmother so that he could show her his science fair project. Skyline Elementary School in Portland, Oregon was having a science fair that day, and although the school would normally open at 8:35 AM, that morning the doors were unlocked at 8AM, to give the students a chance to tour the fair with their families. At around 8:45 AM, Kyron?s stepmother Terri Moulton Horman took a photograph of Kyron standing in front of his project, a detailed diorama of the red-eyed tree frog. He beamed proudly at the camera through his wire rimmed glasses, and then, according to Terri, she walked him to his classroom and watched him enter. But when attendance was taken that day, Kyron Horman was not present, and he would never be seen again. His mother Desiree Young would later say quote, ?it?s like a portal opened up in the school and Kyron just vanished into it? end quote. The search for Kyron has been the largest criminal investigation in Portland history, but to this day there has been no sign of what happened to him, where he went, or who he was with.

S3 Ep135: D.B. Cooper: Mystery Money (Part 2)

It was November 24th, 1971, the day before Thanksgiving and historically the busiest day for travel in the United States. A tall man dressed in a business suit and a thin black tie approached the flight counter of Northwest Orient Airlines at the Portland International Airport and requested a one way ticket to Seattle. This man gave his name as Dan Cooper and he paid twenty dollars in cash for his ticket on Flight 305, which he boarded with 35 other passengers. Cooper took his seat all the way at the back of the plane, he ordered a bourbon and 7-UP, and then he settled in for the short 30 minute flight which was scheduled to take off from Portland, Oregon on time at 2:50 PM, Pacific Standard Time. None of the other passengers, or the six members of the flight crew, noticed anything suspicious about this nondescript business man, traveling with a briefcase and paper bag, sitting quietly by himself in seat 18-E, but that would change shortly after takeoff, when this quiet and polite man notified flight attendant Florence Schaffner that he had a bomb, and he was hijacking the plane. Cooper wanted 200 thousand dollars and four parachutes, and somewhere between Seattle Washington and Reno Nevada, this man dressed in a suit and loafers leaped from a Boeing 727 into a dark and stormy night and was never seen again.

JJ Vallow didn?t have the best start in life. Both of his parents struggled with drug addiction, and so when he was born premature in May of 2012, JJ was also addicted to drugs and it took months for doctors to safely wean him off the substances that had been coursing through his little body. But shortly before his first birthday, JJ was adopted by his uncle, Charles Vallow, and Charles? pretty young wife, Lori Vallow, who had two children of her own, a son named Colby and a daughter named Tylee. Tylee and JJ hit it off immediately, and Tylee became a best friend and mini mother to her younger half brother. It seemed like JJ and Tylee were a part of one big happy family, so when they both vanished in September of 2019, and their normally attentive and loving mother Lori didn?t seem overly concerned about the fact that two of her children were missing, people started asking questions. But no one could have prepared for the answers we would get.

S3 Ep131: The Daybell Doomsday Cult Murders: Pet Cemetery (Part 5)

S3 Ep126: Jacob Landin: "John" Reveals His True Colors (Part 2)

In April of 1987, 9-month-old Jacob Jeremiah Landin died suddenly from a subdural hematoma which had put pressure on his brain and caused irreversible damage. The medical examiner determined that Jacob had died from a blow to the head, and the autopsy revealed evidence of older wounds that were in the process of healing. A partially healed fracture of one of his ribs, another subdural hematoma that was in the process of healing, and a partially healed skull fracture; the medical examiner believed that these injuries were approximately three to four weeks old, and the overall picture suggested a pattern of abuse that the baby had suffered from for an extended period of time. Reportedly, Jacob?s mothers boyfriend confessed to hurting the baby, and he was arrested, but when investigators returned to the case in 2005 they found a labyrinth  of missing information, missing files, and more questions than answers. There was no report of what this man had confessed to, and even though he was arrested for child abuse, it appears he was just let go. Now, Jacob?s brother Eric is on a mission to find out why.

S3 Ep124: Carla Jan Walker: The DNA of Murder (Part 2)

In February of 1974, Carla Jan Walker was a 17 year-old high school junior living in Fort Worth, Texas. Carla was the epitome of the All-American girl, a cheerleader dating the quarterback of the football team who should have been the envy of every one of her peers, with her good grades and wholesome good looks, but Carla was also the kind of girl who smiled at everyone, who had a kind word for anyone she saw, and it was impossible to dislike her. The evening of February 16th, 1975 should have been a magical one for Carla, who had slipped into a floor length powder blue ball gown with delicate white lace trim to attend a Valentines Day dance at her high school, there would be a live band playing, the theme of the dance was "Love Is A Kaleidoscope", and the school gym would be decorated with paper hearts and pink streamers. Even better, she was going to be attending with her steady boyfriend, 18 year-old Rodney McCoy, and she had Rodney?s promise ring safely on her finger. But what started as a wonderful and romantic night, the kind Carla was sure she would one day recollect for the children that she and Rodney were sure to have, turned into a nightmare for Carla, for Rodney, for her family, and for every single person in her community.

S3 Ep122: West Memphis Three: Alternate Suspects (Part 8)

West Memphis, Arkansas is located in Crittenden County and is directly across the Mississippi River from Memphis Tennessee, but in 1993, West Memphis and Memphis were worlds apart. Memphis boasted a healthy and growing population of over 620 thousand, while West Memphis had just over 28 thousand residents. But Memphis, TN struggled with high crime rates, with 1993 setting a record for the most homicides in one year, a record that wasn?t broken until 2016. West Memphis Arkansas had a more small town, laid back feel, and as cliche as it sounds, people felt safe leaving their doors unlocked and letting their young children play outside all day with no supervision. That was until May 5th, 1993, when three eight year old boys rode away on their bikes, eager to expel the energy they had built up all day while sitting in their second grade classrooms at Weaver Elementary School, but they never came home. It wouldn?t be long before the residents of West Memphis and then the world found out what happened to Stevie Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers. Their battered and mutilated bodies were found the next day in a swampy wooded area known to locals as Robin Hood Hills, and the community of West Memphis felt a shockwave hit their community that they would not recover from for some time. Within a month three teenagers were arrested and charged with capital murder, and it wasn?t long before whispers of witchcraft, devil worship and occult killings rippled throught the homes and businesses of West Memphis, and those whispers eventually turned into a loud roar, a roar that might accompany an angry mob looking for someone to blame for an unimaginable tragedy, akin to the infamous witch hunts that are dotted throughout history. This is the story of six boys from West Memphis, Arkansas; three were brutally murdered and stolen from this world far before their time, the other three were marched to the proverbial gallows, guilty in the court of public opinion, and found guilty in an actual court of law. Six lives destroyed, six lives forever changed, six lives eternally tied together.

S3 Ep114: Jennifer Kesse: "Chino" (Part 3)

Orlando, Florida - Home of Mickey Mouse and sunny beach vacations, a city that 60 million people flock to every year whether it?s for the theme parks or just the sun and heat that South Florida is known for. But for the friends and family of 24 year old Jennifer Kesse, this city would become a symbol of all that was wrong and evil in the world. Jennifer was last seen on January 23rd, 2006, she spoke to her family and her boyfriend on the phone that evening and said she was going to bed, she was tired from a trip she had just home from. But the next day, when she didn?t show up for work, her parents traveled to her Orlando condo and found everything normal, as if she had woken up and planned to go to work that day. There was still water in the shower, clothes tossed on an unmade bed, and a wet towel in the laundry room. Days later, Jennifer?s 2004 black Chevy Malibu would be found abandoned a mile down the road, in a not so great part of town, but the car held no clues as to where Jennifer Kesse was either. The one clue that law enforcement was able to retrieve should have cracked the case wide open. It was surveillance video of a person parking Jennifer?s car and walking away from it without even a glance back, and the surveillance clicked a photo of this person every three seconds, and every three seconds this person's face was obscured by a tall wrought iron fence. To this day, Jennifer Kesse has not been found, dead or alive, and the people who love her have fought tirelessly for answers, a fight that included receiving over 16 thousand pages of police records on the investigation, and these pages held more clues which has only fed the fire of this mystery.
