Father, Son and Holy Spirit

If God was unipersonal, there would have been no love until he created the world. However, if the world was created by a triune God, then relationships of love are what life is all about. The Godhead is characterized by mutual self-giving love as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit orbit around one another in a dance. It is impossible for us to join in if we focus on ourselves, but through Jesus Christ and his sacrificial death on the cross, we can be brought into the dance. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on January 15, 2006. Series "King's Cross: The Gospel of Mark, Part 1: The Coming of the King". Scripture: Mark 1:9-13; Genesis 1

Who is the Spirit?

Many people feel as if they understand who God the Father is and who Jesus is, but they become confused about the Holy Spirit. In this sermon, Tim Keller explains who the Holy Spirit is and clarifies misunderstandings about what the Holy Spirit is not. In the process, he shows what it means for the Holy Spirit to dwell richly in us. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on July 4, 2010. The Dangerous God

It is no accident that the Bible often refers to judgment day as ?the Day of the Lord.? We live our lives as if we are the lead actors in the drama of this world. Judgment day is the day when God is paramount. On that day, all people will step back and see the world being put right when God is placed at the center of all things. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on August 22, 1993. Series "Studies in 2 Peter". Scripture: 2 Peter 3:1-13; John 3:30; 1 John 3:2-3

The Parable of the Pearl; On Priorities

Becoming a Christian is not a change of degree but a change in kind. It is leaving your native home and entering the Kingdom of God. But entering the Kingdom of God means being willing to sacrifice everything that goes against your new King. In other words, the Kingdom of God will cost you everything you have. But is it expensive? Not at all. It?s a bargain. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on August 28, 1994. Series "The Parables of Jesus 1994". Scripture: Matthew 13:44-46

Hope for the Poor

There are some churches that care about evangelism but not about serving the poor. Other churches will eagerly serve the poor but they don?t care about proclaiming the Gospel. But churches aren?t meant to do one or the other; they must do both. In fact, the two are linked. When non-Christians see Christians sacrificially serving the needy, it displays the beauty of God to them and becomes an aid to evangelism. Separately, serving the poor doesn?t just help others, but helps ourselves. One of the signs that we have truly experienced God?s love is that we can love others ? in word and in deed. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 4, 2009. Series "The Gospel, Hope, and the World". Scripture: 1 John 3:1-3, 14-20

The Justice of God

Eating with Jesus

** Register for the Feb 16-17 Public Faith Conference Livestream at redeemer.com/formationconference ** Many Americans disregard Christianity not because they don?t believe in God, but because they don?t believe in the church. Jesus exhorts the church to be a ?city on a hill,? a community where people love and serve one another, in fellowship with God as well as with our neighbor. When he fulfills our deepest needs, we can find resources that we never knew we had for serving others. This sermon was preached by Rev. An Immigrant's Courage

Ruth is a story of redeemers. Ruth teaches us that friendships can change the world (as with Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer), and that we can and must reach across spiritual and cultural barriers to do so (as with Ruth, the hidden redeemer). Both Boaz and Ruth point to Jesus, our true Redeemer. Once we realize that, we can ourselves reach across barriers to engage in spiritual friendships and be true disciples of Jesus. The Word Made Flesh

John's Gospel begins by teaching that Jesus Christ is the Word of God. Just as we come to know a person through speaking to them and listening to their words, we come to know God by listening to Jesus speak to us. Yet, Jesus did not come solely to speak. He came to live among us so that there is nothing we will suffer that He has not also suffered. But most of all, He came to die for us. In the incarnation, God became vulnerable to us - even to death - and yet He loved us so much that He was glad to so. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 13, 2009. Series "Christmas 2009". Scripture: John 1:1-14; Hebrews 2:14-18; Mark 2:5

Generosity in Scarcity

Habbakuk tells us how to deal with evil times and maintain joy when everything is going wrong. There are three principles to giving: give sacrificially, joyfully, and graciously. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 31, 2009. Series "Living by Faith in Troubled Times". Scripture: Habakkuk 3, Matthew 6, Luke 19

Pride: The Case of Nebuchadnezzar

Nebuchadnezzar's pride began in contentment and prosperity, but he had no peace of mind. It caused him to take credit for everything he'd achieved. God dehumanized him in a reflection of what pride had done to his heart. Only when he recognized his debt to God - and that he was the object of God's mercy - could he be humbled and healed of his pride. This sermon was preached by Rev. Rejecting the Real Jesus

Why do so many people disbelieve Christianity and reject the message of Jesus Christ? The underlying problem is that we do not want to give up control over our lives and have God be our ultimate authority. To overcome unbelief we must see our need for a Savior and look to Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God, who died for us on the cross. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 22, 1996. Series "The Real Jesus Part 1; His Teaching". Scripture: Matthew 11:16-24

The Final Hour

The cross solves many of our deepest human dilemmas. We wonder how there can be a God when there is so much injustice in the world, yet of all the world's religions, only Christianity has a God who comes down and suffers injustice alongside us. We wonder how we can ever truly please a perfectly holy God, but on the cross, Jesus satisfies the holiness of God for us. The temple curtain is torn, and we are welcomed inside as God's children. War Between Your Selves (Part 1)

Everyone has a war within themselves. We all want to live according to a high moral code, but none of us can meet the demands of our moral code. The reason for this is that inside of ourselves there is a desire for evil as well as a desire for good. Therefore, none of us can win the battle. But the battle changes when we become a Christian. The deepest parts of ourselves change so that for the first time our most inner being delights in the law of God. We move from a battle we cannot win to a battle we cannot lose. Praying in the Spirit

To address God as Father was an intimate and shocking thing for Jesus to do. As we move toward the Father in intimacy of prayer, the Spirit will grow in us a deepening wisdom, develop beauty of heart, and give us spiritual clarity. Christ: The Final Word

Jesus is the final Word and ultimate truth of God. But if we don't listen to and accept God's final Word, we can't have a personal relationship with him. We have to adjust to God's finalities, just as he adjusted to ours by becoming human and dying for us. This understanding should melt our hearts and change our lives as we become more and more focused on God and the gospel. This sermon was preached by Rev. The New Birth

A common misunderstanding of being "born again" is that it's an experience for broken people, a way for outcasts and moral failures to turn their life around. Yet, when Jesus teaches on being born again, He does so by challenging a man who is the very opposite of the born again stereotype. Nicodemus was an upright moral man and a leader in his society - and yet Jesus said that all of his accomplishments meant nothing unless he was born again. This sermon was preached by Rev. The Meaning of Christmas

Christmas shows why Christianity is unique. In all other religions, a prophet arrives and teaches how we can find eternal life. In Christianity, God himself comes to us and gives himself as the way to eternal life. Christmas shows that salvation is by grace, that we can have true intimacy with God, that love really matters, and that there exists an unceasing river of joy beneath all the sorrows of this world. When Paul prays for the Ephesian church, he does not pray for an improvement in their external circumstances. Rather, Paul prays for God to grant the members of the Ephesians church a profound internal knowledge of the depths of God's love. Work and Rest

The religious leaders in Jesus' time had a long list of rules regarding the Sabbath. When questioned, Jesus does not respond by dismissing the Sabbath, but rather redefines it - by dying on a cross. As Christians, we are able to enter into his rest and enjoy the same rest that God enjoyed after creation, by means of his works, not ours. The Sabbath is a blessing from God and one we will only enjoy if we understand it correctly. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on March 23, 2003. Wise people are good at choosing, forging, and keeping friendships. The marks of a true friend are constancy, carefulness, candor, and counsel. A Promise of Hope

Adam and Eve sinned even before they ate the forbidden fruit. As soon as they asked themselves why they should obey God, they had sinned in their hearts. Sin is when we remove God as the ultimate authority and enthrone ourselves in God?s place. By elevating ourselves at the expense of God, God?s good world became broken. Yet, the story of Adam and Eve does not end with despair but with hope. God, in the midst of his judgment, promises that a day will come when one of Eve?s children will utterly annihilate the power of sin. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on July 5, 1998. Series "Genesis 1998". Scripture: Genesis 3:11-24

A Christian's Happiness

Romans 8:28 is one of the most famous verses in the Bible. People love the thought that God works out all things for good for those who love Him. Yet, Romans 8:28 is intimately connected with Romans 8:29-30 where God promises to bodily resurrect those He has called. In other words, the Bible does not promise that Christians will have more pleasant circumstances in this life than non-Christians. The Bible promises a better life to come?not better life circumstances in this world. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on July 6, 1997. Series "Happiness and Weeping". Scripture: Romans 8:28-30
