36 From the Vault

In this week’s episode, our Season 3 Finale, we wrap things up in December 1992 in Oakland, CA, with a show from the larger returning run following Jerry’s health crisis during the summer/fall. Featuring a unique setlist filled with songs of every era, the lone Vince solo show of the series, and perhaps the most bizarre song pairing in Dick’s Picks history, it’s a wild and fitting closure to S3 of our show.

Disc One opens with the song we’ve all been waiting for since the series began: “Feel Like A Stranger.” While we don’t get the Brent growl throughout, we get the silky silky reprise all the same, and it leads to a larger conversation within the show. Elsewhere we hear an updated take on “The Main Thing,” where Bob’s “De Men’s” line clashes heavily with the barroom swirl of Pigpen. “Loose Lucy” makes its DP debut in a sultry groove before a fantastic “Let It Grow” closes it out. In Disc Two we hear some of the 90’s jamming applied to “Shakedown Street” before Bob’s grunge inspired guitar tones take over “Ship Of Fools.” More 90’s jamming invades “Playing” which moves into an inspired “Drums -> Space.” Finally, in Disc Three, we get a rare 90’s “Dark Star” alongside the groove of “Throwing Stones” from 12/17. The volume ends with the most bizarre pairing of songs in DP history with “Baba O’Rielly -> Tomorrow Never Knows.” Vince takes the lead here and the band somehow stumbles through the Boomer Anthem pairing. There’s truly nothing like it, and it’s a perfect way to close the volume and Season 3 of 36 From The Vault.

In this week’s episode we hop back to 1969 to hear two shows from the spring that showcase The Grateful Dead in significant transition. We hear two Midwestern shows: April 26, 1969 from Chicago, IL and April 27, 1969 from Minneapolis, MN. Hearing the band shift between the summer of love English Folk of their late-60’s output to Pigpen bar blues to the Live Dead inspired suite from Minneapolis, is a revealing insight into who The Dead were & who they could’ve become.

Disc One opens with a string of songs the band would essentially leave in the 60’s, highlighting the Garcia/Hunter penchant for pastoral lyrics & fitting 3-4 songs together into one. The highlight is undeniably the “Mountains Of The Moon” which fades into a “Dark Star” jam. The disc ends with a stunning jam from 4/27 out of “Turn On Your Lovelight -> Me & My Uncle” which showcases the looseness the band could play with during this period. Disc Two continues on 4/27 with a suite based around “Dark Star” that essentially mimics the Live Dead release, showcasing a similar selection of songs through different passages of improvisation. On the whole, the set proves to be a controversial one for Rob & Steve as the two find numerous disagreements with Disc One, as well as with the place The Dead find themselves in early 1969. The Velvet Underground co-headlined the 4/26 show with The Dead, offering another avenue for discourse on this release.

In this week’s episode we celebrate 25 volumes of the Dick’s Picks series. A monumental moment in the series, as it showcased the viability of a single band releasing a trove from their archives over a significant period in time. We’re treated to two Spring 1978 shows from the NE, May 10, 1978 from New Haven, CT and May 11, 1978 from Springfield, MA. Two archetypal Spring ‘78 shows, we hear the band engage in tight interplay around fairly standard setlists, while showcasing some of the best parts of their 77/78 period, while also pointing the way towards the future of the band in the 1980s.

Disc One features quality song selection with an excellent “Jack Straw” opener, a sultry “They Love Each Other,” and a gorgeous “Peggy-O.” A wild “Deal” showcases the interplay between Donna & Bob which would be a major theme of the overall volume. Disc Two picks up midway through Set II of 5/10 with a seedy “Estimated Prophet” before a massive “Drums” jam. The disc closes with a stunning “The Other One” into an impassioned “Wharf Rat” that showcases the power of the Garcia outro solo. Disc Three opens on 5/11 with a more laid back approach, showcasing some of the more standard Set I tunes in Dead History. The disc concludes with a very solid “Scarlet -> Fire.” Disc Four is a wild party. Rumors abound about mescaline intake, we hear one of the best “Dancing In The Streets” of all time followed by a massive “Drums -> NFA,” and concluded with a gorgeous “Stella Blue.” The volume concludes with a Double-Barry bookending a fantastic take on “Werewolves Of London.” It's a full-scale dive into Spring ‘78 Dead, seedy, tight, wild, and grooving. Dive in.

In this week’s episode we join the Dead in early 1974 for the very first Wall of Sound show. Just five shows removed from the Dick’s Picks one selection, we hear the band in a loose, soundchecky vibe, as they work through the kinks of their revolutionary PA, and begin to dip their toes in the wild and exploratory sounds of 1974. One of the most laid-back Dick’s Picks ever, it’s a great warts & all peek into the Dead on the cusp of one of their most experimental & challenging years. 

Disc One is a trot through some DP standards, here played with space and patience in a way that fits the airiness of the Wall Of Sound they were plugged into. We hear the big machine slowly turn on in a choogly “US Blues” before great takes on “Brown-Eyed Women” and “Black-Throated Wind” settle everyone in. The debut of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Cassidy” prelude a truly 1974 take on “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Ride” before a gorgeous “Weather Report Suite” closes out the set. Disc Two is anchored by an emotive, 45min palindrome segment which reads: “Playing In The Band -> Uncle John’s Band -> Morning Dew -> Uncle John’s Band -> Playing In The Pand.” The raw power of the band in 1974 is heard clearly here, while their sectional jamming of Fall 1973 is on full display as well. The set ends with some standard takes on out of place tunes, while “Wharf Rat” serves as the emotional climax we all needed during the set. The seeds of the band we’d hear on full display in Dick’s Picks 7 and 12 is here in its earliest origins.

In this week’s episode we return to the Dick’s Picks cannon for our second of three shows in the set from the hallowed month of September 1972. Just ten days prior to the Dick’s Picks Vol. 11 show from 9/27/72 in Jersey City, NJ, we hear the band play a similar setlist while highlighting a different centerpiece jam. It’s a classic example of The Grateful Dead in a peak month, which showcases the best of the band while highlighting the subtle differences between the band at their best. 

Disc One is a standard ride through ‘72 dead with staples like “Sugaree,” “Black-Throated Wind,” and “Tennessee Jed” scattered throughout, all played standard-great. The peak of the disc is found in “Bird Song,” that, while it doesn’t reach its heights of the DP11 or (coming soon) DP36 versions, is still quite blissful. One Disc Two we’re treated to a 20min exploration of “Playing In The Band” before excellent takes off “Truckin’” and “Loser” kick off Set II. Disc Three is highlighted by a monster “He’s Gone -> The Other One.” The former caps off at 39 min, it’s the longest jam in the entire DP Set and showcases a band on a musical high, shifting gears, embracing risk, weaving in and out of ideas, and displaying their overall penchant for exploration during this period. Like so much of September 1972, we hear two versions of The Dead. One is still breaking out of its shell, reveling in the post-European Tour bliss, moving forward as the unit we’d know through the 70s. The other is already looking ahead to the acid jazz explorations that would define their best experimentations until their hiatus in 1974.

In this week’s episode we take a momentary pause from our march through the Dick’s Picks series to discuss one of the best (some would say the best) live performance of all time: Bob Dylan & The Hawks 05/17/1966 concerts from the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, UK, known throughout history as the “Royal Albert Hall” Concert. Catching Dylan in the midst of a creative peak, just weeks prior to the release of his monumental album, Blonde On Blonde, and just months before he’d disappear from live performances for 8 years, it’s an incredible peek into an artist challenging the norms of his era, battling with an audience of imbeciles, and playing some of the best rock & roll ever made with The Hawks.

Disc One is a complete acoustic set, which shows Dylan playing songs from Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and the yet-unreleased Blonde On Blonde. Every song has a claim for The Greatest Dylan Song of All Time, but highlights are found in the languid “Visions Of Johanna,” the haunting “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” the wild and atonal “Desolation Row,” and the stunning energy in “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Disc Two opens with stray guitar riffs before launching into “Tell Me, Momma.” From there we’re off. One of the greatest sets of rock & roll ever played. Reworking old songs like “I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met,” “Baby Let Me Follow You Down,” and “One Too Many Mornings” as well as blasting tunes from his latest releases, “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” and “Leopard Skin Pill-Box Hat,” Dylan battles his audience for the whole set, chastising them “It used to be like this….now it goes like that….” “...If only you wouldn’t clap so loud…” and forcing some of the best rock music ever played upon their ears. The boo’s are hurtled from afar from a crowd of fucking morons who want Dylan to be the Dylan they want them to be, and all the while the band plays louder and tighter and groovier. The set peaks following a searing “Ballad Of A Thin Man” with an audience member calling Dylan “Judas!” before Dylan responds with: “I don’t believe you….you’re a liar,” before instructing The Hawks to “Play it fucking loud!” They do just that, and one of the greatest versions of “Like A Rolling Stone” is unleashed on the world. 

The show is an absolutely stunning picture of Dylan, who, at 24, was at an early creative peak - some would say his highest - and on the tail end of a 18mo dive into amphetamine abuse. Strung out, exhausted, angry, but writing some of the best music he ever will, he combines all of this into a dual performance, acoustic/electric, that showcases the sheer genius of Dylan, and the lasting legacy of his craft.

In this week’s episode we jump back in time to February 1968 for a pair of shows - unheard prior to their Dick’s Picks Release - from the King’s Beach Bowl in King’s Beach, California. Primordial Dead. We hear the band working through a number of tunes that would find their way onto Anthem Of The Sun while experimenting with dynamic-less jamming. As Steve notes at the top, this show kicks off at 11 before ending up at 35. It’s a wild ride. 

Disc One opens with a near-20min jam off “Viola Lee Blues” and doesn’t look back. Both discs in this set flow with thematic precision & youthful vigor that defines the overall period for the dead. From there, we hear Pigpen croon on “Hurts Me Too” before segues take over in “Dark Star -> China Cat Sunflower -> The Eleven> Turn On Your Lovelight” and finally a wild “Born Crosseyed -> Spanish Jam.” In Disc Two we hear the early power of “Morning Dew” before Pigpen lets loose again in a massive “Good Morning Little School Girl.” From there we’re back into the segues, as we hear part of the band’s Anthem Of The Sun segment in “That’s It For The Other One -> New Potato Caboose -> Alligator -> China Cat Sunflower -> The Eleven -> Alligator> Caution -> Feedback.” The volume closes with noise & sonic energy as the visceral power of the Grateful Dead comes through with tape hiss, piss, and vinegar. We’re not yet at the foundation of The Dead, we’re somewhere just before the Live Dead/Workingman’s Dead/American Beauty era that would set the band up for their 25yr period of greatness. The sounds are weird, the jams are heavy, and the songs aren’t fully formed. We can hear The Dead in there, ready to break out of their shell.

In this week’s episode we dive into the heart of the 1980s for a complete show at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmon, VA on November 1, 1985, as well as a segment of the September 2, 1980 show at Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY. The main show finds the band competing with the intense vibe of the scene and working to will the crowd back from the brink. As a result, it features some of the most unique setlisting we’ve heard featured on a Dick’s Picks release, regardless the era. In the 1980’s segment, we hear the band toying with “Space.” before showcasing Brent’s initial impacts on the band, through a stunning “Morning Dew.”

Disc One gives us our third “Dancing In The Streets” in the last two releases. The remainder of the set is upbeat, and updated takes on 70’s Dead classics here with their full band from the 80’s. Disc Two might be the most mellow set in Dick’s Picks history as “Samson & Delila” is really the only upbeat song of the night. What follows is an hour of deeply methodical and meditative music that only makes sense when one knows the intensity of the events of the night. “High Time>He’s Gone -> Spoonful>Comes A Time>Lost Sailor>Drums -> Space -> Saint Of Circumstance” bridges the second and third discs in stunning fashion. In Disc Three we move from the contemplative to the wedding party as “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “She Belongs To Me” and “Gloria” cap off a weird set that has to be heard. Finally, the set ends with a segment from 9/2/80 with a deeply engaged “Space” fading into “Iko Iko” before a stunning “Morning Dew” and “Sugar Magnolia” closes things down. It’s a wild and unique release in the overall catalogue, one that showcases The Dead at their most 80’s in 1985.

In this week’s episode we explore 1976 for the first time in the series with two shows culled together from the Fall of 1976: September 25, 1976 from the Cap Centre in Landover, MD, and September 28, 1976 from the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, NY. Offering a peek into the transition the Dead was embarking on as they returned to the road, we hear new songs debut, old songs return, the band tighten up, and jams flow with more song-oriented focus, rather than atmospheric jamming.

Disc One, in Landover, hears the band showcase energy and tightness as “Bertha” and “New Minglewood Blues” hit on a high. “Let It Grow” features the jamming peak of the disc. Disc Two provides insight into what 1971 Dead would sound like mid-decade as older tunes return, while in the midst of a fluid set. Highlights include a pre-77 “Dancing In The Streets” groove, a “Scarlet Begonias” with a “Fire” jam, some five months before the debut of “Fire On The Mountain,” and a languid “St Stephen/NFA” suite. Disc Three kicks us up to Syracuse with a few repeats, and great playing in “New Minglewood Blues” + another killer “Let It Grow,” this time segueing into “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad.” Disc Four might be the peak of the whole release with a transcendent segment that reads: “Playing In The Band -> The Wheel -> Samson & Delila -> Comes A Time> Drums -> Eyes Of The World -> Orange Tango Jam -> Dancing In The Streets -> Playing In The Band.” A full “Playing” suite Set II, a great preview of the highs of 77/78.

A single-show snapshot of The Dead as they launched into their lauded Fall 1973 Tour, we hear the musical explorations and immediate brilliance which would lead to two previous Dick’s Picks releases in Vol. 1 and Vol. 14.

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 18, a midwestern compilation from February 3, 1978 at the Dane County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin, February 4, 1978 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and February 5, 1978, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Just six weeks on from the magical year of 1977, we find The Dead fusing their disco-dead sound with expert & lengthy jams, giving the run a mixed feeling of 1973 meeting 1977. Pieced together like a standard Set I for the era with a double-pack of Set II jam vehicles, this is a joyous compilation that gives one a true sense of what The Grateful Dead were up to in the Winter of 1978.

Disc One opens with the back-to-back combo of “Bertha” and “Good Lovin’” before we dive into a seasonally appropriate “Cold Rain & Snow.” Elsewhere, “Deal” shines in the lively rock of late-70’s Dead. Disc Two is a masterpiece as the late-70’s combo of “Estimated Prophet> Eyes Of The World” before “Playin’ In The Band” jams for nearly 25min in a fusion of the late-70’s groove & early-70’s psychedilia. From there we hear the first “The Wheel” of the Dick’s Picks series before returning to “Playin’.” Disc Three provides a bonus Set II to the overall show, with a scorching “Scarlet -> Fire” that concludes with a jam heavy “Truckin’ -> Drums -> Other One> Wharf Rat.” All the flavors of Winter/Spring 1978 are represented here in a compilation that matches Dick’s Picks 4, 12 and 14 for its mastery of encapsulating an era.

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 17 from the Boston Garden in Boston, MA on September 25, 1991. In addition, this show features two bonus tracks from Charlotte, NC on March 31, 1991. Midway through a fantastic run at the Garden, and in some of the last shows the band would play with Bruce Hornsby, this is a great peek into the consistency of The Dead in 1991, and the benefits of playing extended gigs during this period. Steve & Rob are joined by Dead Archivist, David Lemieux, who made this his first pick in the series, for a fantastic conversation about the Grateful Dead organization & his approach to picking releases. 

Disco One opens with a hot “Help -> Slip -> Franklin’s” before “It Must Have Been The Roses” and “Dire Wolf” provide the surprise Double Jerry dip. Disc Two flows with jamming precision. Kicking off with the dimly lit “Victim Or The Crime,” the disc peaks with the “Playing -> Terrapin” jam session, which only goes to showcase the similarities of the two songs. Disc Three opens with the rare cover of Paul McCartney’s “That Would Be Something,” before diving into an endless run of Set Closers. The bonus material is highlighted by one of the best “Eyes Of The World” of the 90’s, and one of the best versions of it we’ve featured on the show. An absolute gem to spin, it showcases the experimental communication of the Hornsby years.

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 16 from the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, CA on November 7 and 8, 1969. PRIMAL DEAD! Coming just a few weeks shy of the Altamont Festival & the end of the 1960’s, we hear The Dead in a period of growth and transition. Just three months later they’ll be performing what many consider their greatest shows of all time (2/13-14/70 at the Fillmore East), we hear the seeds of that show, while also taking a reflective look back at their thematic brilliance of the 1960s.

In Disc One, we hear an early, up-beat & extended take on “Dire Wolf,” a fiery “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider,” and the first ever “Cumberland Blues.” Disc Two is up there with the best of the entire series as “Dark Star” jams deep before transitioning into a stunning segment which reads: “-> The Other One -> Dark Star -> Uncle John’s Band Jam -> Dark Star -> St. Stephen -> The Eleven.” Displaying their fluidity during the era, while also preluding some of their lengthy excursions from the early 70’s, it’s a monumental jam segment & should be a standard CD in every Deadhead’s car. Finally, in Disc Three, we throw the reigns to Pigpen while hearing some of the wildest psychedelic/blues jamming in Dead history.

In this week’s episode we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series to chat about one of the best live bands of the last 30 years, who inadvertently took some important cues from The Grateful Dead: Radiohead. Diving into their performance from June 17, 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, we explore the ways in which the band structures their gigs, their approach to road-testing certain tunes, and their own brand of experimentation within their live show. 

The show is highlighted by an expertly-crafted setlist which focuses on their career as a whole while previewing some of their best tracks off their soon-to-be-released (at the time) 7th album, In Rainbows. Opening with “There There” before launching into “2+2=5” and “15 Step” set the tone for the night. Elsewhere, “Videotape” has perhaps its strongest performance ever, while “Dollars and Cents,” “The National Anthem” and “How To Disappear Completely” showcases the band’s ability to stretch out ideas in the live setting. Within their extended double encore, the band dips into their Kid A/Amnesiac period for excellent takes on “Pyramid Song,” “Like Spinning Plates,” “Idioteque” and the show closing “Everything In Its Right Place.”

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 15, from Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ on September 3, 1977. One of the biggest Dead shows of all time, we dive back into the halcyon year of 1977, hearing the band play a greatest hits type of show following their cancelled Summer Tour after Mickey’s car accident. Highlighted by tight playing and a killer setlist, it’s one of the most popular Dick’s Picks ever released. 

Disc One is highlighted by a brilliant “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and a gorgeous “Friend Of The Devil.” On Disc Two “Bertha” and “Eyes Of The World highlight the first half of the second set,” while on Disc Three “He’s Gone” fades into a unique jam before easing into a stunning take on “Not Fade Away.” A jam that wouldn’t have felt out of place in 1970, it hears The Dead exploring the darker terrain that fit the early 1970’s more than the Disco era. It’s a great overall snippet of The Dead at another peak period just passed their first hiatus.

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 14, from the Boston Music Hall in Boston, MA on November 30 and December 2, 1973. The first ever four-disc Dick’s Picks, this dives back into the world of late-1973 - a particularly brilliant period in Dead history - for the first time since Dick’s Picks Vol. 1. It is also the last volume in the series that Dick Latvala was alive for its release. Please take a moment to remember the man who brought us this incredible peek into the world of the greatest band in the land. 

Across four discs we hear a great representation of two different shows from the era. Disc One opens with “Morning Dew” before seeing strong takes on “Dire Wolf,” “Black Throated Wind” and “Big River.” The first of two “Playin’ In The Band’s” closes out. In Disc Two we’re treated to a phenomenal suite of GD jamming in “Weather Report Suite -> Dark Star Jam> Eye’s Of The World” while the disc’s opener, “Here Comes Sunshine” is the first we’ve heard since DP1. Disc Three mirrors the first, however goes a touch deeper in a phenomenal “Weather Report Suite> Wharf Rat -> Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodelo.” The volume closes with a killer Fourth Disc highlighted by an incredible 25+min “Playin’ -> He’s Gone> Truckin’> Stella Blue>Morning Dew.” Overall, it matches Dick’s Picks Vol. 7 and 12 in its ability to showcase what made the 1973/74 peak of The Dead so strong. 

Steven and Rob focus on their appreciation for Dick Latvala, the ability for The Dead to jam as one during this period, the slippery slope of Dead Fandom, the copisms of Phil, and the brilliant moments of Jerry’s slide.

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 13, from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on May 6, 1981. A return to the 80’s & the Brent era, this is a puzzling installment in the larger volume that features a lot of repeated tracks, before showcasing some stellar jamming in a bonus segment late in the show. Highlighting Set I, we hear an inspired Brent on “Alabama Getaway,” and a fiery Jerry on “Jack-A-Roe,” before the two collaborate for a fantastic jam in “Deal.” In Set II we hear the first “Lost Sailor -> Saint Of Circumstance” of the Dick’s Picks series, before the latter fades into a 30+min wild bonus segment of “Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain” from 1979, which heard Brent push his ideas on the band to fascinating results. Returning to Nassau, the “He’s Gone -> Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks) -> Drums -> Jam -> The Other One -> Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad> Wharf Rat” segment is filled with surprises and improv, making it a highlight for the era and the volume. In the dark ages of the early-80s, this volume showcases what made this era confounding and also fascinating all at once. 

Steven and Rob focus on the joy/challenge of virtual tour listening projects, the band’s songwriting shifts & creative malaise at this time, the curiosities of Bob Weir’s political beliefs, and the best shows that surrounded this version.

Welcome back to Season 2 of 36 from the Vault: SUMMER TOUR! In Episode 13 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 12, from the Providence Civic Center in Providence, RI on June 26, 1974 and the Boston Garden in Boston, MA on June 28, 1974. A return to the wondrous year of 1974, as well as the compilation format in the DP series, this is a fan favorite, and one of the strongest versions to date. Filled with rare tracks and massive jams, it’s one of the more unique versions in the series, and a perfect snapshot of where The Dead were in Summer 1974. Kicking things off with an extended “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” sets the tone for the collection. Rounding out disc one with a 50-min segment that reads: “Truckin’ -> The Other One -> Spanish Jam -> Wharf Rat -> Sugar Magnolia” concludes one of the best single discs The Dead have ever released. Later we hear a snippet of the experimental jam in “Seastones” before another incredible 50min segment of “Weather Report Suite -> Jam -> US Blues” highlights the third disc. All in all it’s a truly thematic volume which showcases The Dead’s successes with The Wall Of Sound as well as their heavy focus on improvisation in 1974. 

Steven and Rob focus on the eternal greatness of “China>Rider,” the brilliance of compilation Dick’s Picks, the desire to hear a full “Seastones,” the band’s impending hiatus, and the beauty of mid-70’s Warren Beatty’s hair, seen best in the film “The Parallax View.”

Welcome to Season 2 of 36 from the Vault: SUMMER TOUR! In Episode 12 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 12, from The Stanley Theater in Jersey City, NJ on September 27, 1972. Our first 1972 show in the series - and the first of three from September ‘72 in the larger Dick’s Picks Cannon, this is one of the best full shows we’ve heard thus far. Filled with great song selections, and huge jams, this is a peek into the world of The Dead post-Europe, post-Pigpen, as they were incorporating more jazz and psychedelia into their jams, and were fully connected behind the drumming of Bill Kreutzmann. The show opens with a rare “Morning Dew.” Typically a Set II closer, its appearance here overshadows Set I with an ominous feel. Later, “Bird Song” drifts like a dream before the set ends in wild fashion with a ripping “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” followed by an abstract take on “Playin’ In The Band. In Set II “He’s Gon” jams in a focused & medidative style before “Dark Star” hooks up for an ethereal and breezy take on the expansive jam vehicle. Elsewhere, “Cumberland Blues” rips unexpectedly, while “Attics Of my Life” offers the emotional resolution needed following a show like this. 

Steven and Rob focus on the impact of Europe & shows like Veneta on the band in 1972, and the transition they were about to go through as they moved into 1973 & 1974, two renowned years in Grateful Dead history.

Welcome to Season 2 of 36 From The Vault: SUMMER TOUR! In Episode 11 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 10, from The Winterland in San Francisco, CA on December 29 at 30, 1977. A celebratory volume that checks a lot of boxes fans had been asking for through the first ten volumes of the series. The show feels like a party at The Winterland as the nights tick off from one of the most accomplished years in their history. Featuring outstanding versions of “Jack Straw” and “Sugaree” in Set I, it also sees “Loser” make its DP Debut. In Set II, the band weaves together a suite within “Playing In The Band” before dropping their first “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” since 1974. Encoring with “Terrapin Station” was a special nod to the venue and the year. And as a special treat, we got a snippet from December 30, in the form of “Estimated Prophet,” a fantastic “Eyes Of The World,” “St. Stephen” and “Sugar Magnolia.”

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 9 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 9, from Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY on September 16,1990. A confounding volume which sees The Grateful Dead just two months on from the loss of their beloved keyboardist, Brent Mydland. Here they’re introducing two new keyboardists to the mix - Vince Welnick & Bruce Hornsby, while still very much mourning Brent. What follows is a fascinating, albeit uneven performance which features standout performances of “Tennessee Jed,” “Looks Like Rain,” and “He’s Gone. Fusing these unique takes with odd setlist selections and weird sonic experimentations, this is one of the least revered, but strangely insightful peeks into the Dead in a period of mourning, transition, and still fantastic music.

A fascinating volume which sees The Grateful Dead just four months on from their phenomenal run at Fillmore East, documented in Dick’s Picks Vol. 4. Here we see them feature their newest songs, set to be recorded for Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, in their acoustic set, while allowing their electric set as a review of their career through the 1960s. In the acoustic set, songs like “Friend Of The Devil,” “Dire Wolf,” and “Black Peter” sound raised from the dirt. It’s a peek towards where The Dead will go in the early 70s, as many of their best songs will debut over the next three years. In the electric set, we hear the psych-rock freak-outs of the 60s on their last legs, as “Good Lovin’,” “Viola Lee Blues” and “Dancing In The Streets” showcase the best of The Dead we’re leaving behind. Historically, this may be the biggest transition we’ve heard from The Dead in the entire Dick’s Picks series.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 8 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 7, from the Alexandra Palace in London, ENG on September 9-11,1974. Deep in the Wall of Sound Era, we find the Dead in London for a rough tour just before their extended hiatus began, and a compilation set - the first since DP4, where Dick showcases the best of the run. Highlights abound as Phil sounds his strongest we’ve heard thus far in the series, and the band is at perhaps their jamming peak. If nothing else, you must check out the “Playing In The Band” from Disc 1, “Weather Report Suite,” “Truckin’ -> Wood Green Jam” from Disc 2, and the “Dark Star -> Spam Jam -> Morning Dew” from Disc 3. It’s a wild experience hearing a compilation that flows like a complete show, and provides a fantastic snapshot of the band on the precipice of a major transition.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 7 we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series, to chat about the post-Jerry years. Focusing on the larger touch points between Phish & The Dead, we dive into Phish’s 1998 Island Tour, highlighting the April 3, 1998 performance from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. A high point for Phish, they’d just reinvented themselves stylistically throughout 1997, and then booked a surprise run of shows just a few weeks prior to dive back into the Eno-inspired atmospheric funk jams they couldn’t get enough of. A true turning point in the band’s larger history, The Island Tour marks the point where the party begins to consume the band, and the darkness that’s lingering will soon consume them. A celebration & an ominous sign of what’s to come, it’s a fascinating moment in their history. 

Opening with stellar jams in “Mike’s Song” and “Weekapaug Groove,” the band later focuses on intra-band communication in “Reba.” The second, however, is the highlight of the overall show. Running just four songs, it reads: “Roses Are Free -> Piper -> Loving Cup> Run Like An Antelope.” Particualrly in the “Roses” and “Piper” the band connects with such effortlessness that they sound pre-recorded. In the encore, “Halley’s Comet” leads into the second-ever stateside “Carini” before the rare “Tweezer-less” “Tweezer Reprise” closes the show.

Steven and Rob focus on the energy that guided Phish throughout the 90s, highlighting the decisions that led to their 1997 reinvention, and how this run shifted the band towards their more modern incarnation with all its surprises and challenges. In addition, they discuss the legacy of the thoughtful groove-driven jamming that defined the era.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 6 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 6, from the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT on October 14, 1983. A bit of a blind spot in larger Dead History, we find the band in the middle of a successful Fall Tour, where their sound has evolved significantly since their initial peaks in the 1970s. While Set I fails to lift off in the way many initial sets had in the Dick’s Picks series thus far, the Second set is uniquely strong, featuring the first “Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain” released yet in the series. From there, the band moves through “Estimated Prophet” before a wild and spacey “Eyes Of The World” highlights the set before moving into “Drums -> Space.” The final peak of the show comes in an emotive “Stella Blue” that set the standard for many A-late Set II 80’s comedown. 

Steven and Rob focus on the static nature of the early-80’s in Dead history, discussing their relationship to popular acts of the time like Talking Heads & Dire Straits, the side projects that dominated much of this time, and the health issues that began to creep into the band.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 5 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 5, from the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland, CA on December 26, 1979. We find the Dead at yet another transitional period in their career, as they continue rolling out the Brent era. This show features a number of significant bustouts in “Uncle John’s Band” & “Brokedown Palace” while being highlighted by a phenomenal second set. Featuring an uninterrupted run of jams in “Uncle John’s Band -> Estimated Prophet -> Jam -> He’s Gone - > The Other One -> Drums -> Space -> Not Fade Away> Brokedown Palace,” it showcased the new tones and sonic approach that came with Brent Myland joining earlier that year.

We find the Dead at a transitional period in their career, peaking as they move from the psychedelic madness of the 60s into the most remarkable decade of their career. Welcome To 36 from the Vault! In episode 3 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 3. Recording at the Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines, FL, on May 22, 1977. Featuring a near complete show, we hear a “Sugaree” that’s as close to perfect as you’ll ever get, a funky “Dancing In The Street,” a “Help On The Way -> Slipknot! -> Franklin’s Tower” for the ages, and a four-song jam from “Eyes Of The World -> Wharf Rat -> Terrapin Station -> Morning Dew” that sounded like a completely different band than most expected in May 1977.

Steven and Rob focus on the disco-fication of 1977 Dead, the songs that fit the era best, the importance of Phil Lesh, and the reasons why the Dead seemed to thrive in out of the way places throughout the 70’s.

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 2 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 2. Recording at the Ohio Theater in Columbus, OH, on October 31, 1971. We hear the band riffing on the “Tighten Up” Jam midway through a 23-minute “Dark Star.” Continuing with a fluid second set comprised of “St. Stephen” and a lengthy “Not Fade Away -> Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad -> Not Fade Away,” it’s one of the more compact and narrative second sets of the early-70s. 

Steven and Rob focus on the challenges of selecting these shows, the overall approach to introducing Deadheads to lesser-known recordings, and the practice of incorporating thematic jams into their “Dark Star” jams to help push their jamming forward. In addition, they highlight one of Keith’s first gigs with the Dead.

Welcome To 36 from the Vault! Hosted by Steven Hyden and Rob Mitchum, the series explores The Grateful Dead’s live releases. Steven and Rob use the series as a jumping-off point to discuss the wildest and most unconventional American rock band, along with the venues, cultural zeitgeist, musical evolution, and larger themes of each release. 

In Episode 1 we explore Dick’s Pick’s Vol. 1. Recorded at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, FL, on December 19, 1973. Here we find the band on a high, closing out one of their strongest years ever, and featuring a fully-flowing second set marked by the uninterrupted segment of: “He’s Gone -> Truckin’ -> Nobody’s Fault But Mine -> Jam -> The Other One -> Jam -> Stella Blue.” 

Steven and Rob focus on the origins of the live release series before diving into the show itself, properly highlighting the transcendent Set 2. In addition, they offer a history of the band playing odd one-off shows in out-of-the-way markets, consider the political corruption in Florida that leads to stadium naming, and muse over the value of bass solos, along with much more.
