Your host Paul Waller (not Weller) is a horror movie addict. During 2020 the workload for his band and music management job slowed right down.
At this same time he discovered the movie social networking platform LETTERBOXD. Armed with this database he decided to fill in the gaps of his horror film knowledge. Within week one he was averaging 3 a day.
This podcast is the result of that horror compulsion – A YEAR IN HORROR

Today we speak with Rebecca Harvey, aka girlpuppy about the 80s staple that was Pet Sematary, the Stephen King film that could and then did, spawning several sequels and remakes in its wake. We speak about girlpuppy's latest album and what exactly attracts Rebecca to the depths of the macabre.
Today we head over to France for a chat with Karen Jebane, aka Golem Mechanique in celebration of her latest release "Siamo tutti in pericolo". An album that is inspired by the works of director Pier Paolo Pasolini, the man that directed Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom . So I did the maths and this conversation was the result.
Episode 300 is here! Its been 4+ years and there has been 4+ beers but this time around we have finally caught up with Cheekface. Straight outta California and thankfully unscathed from the recent horrific wild fires there we welcome Amanda Tannen to the show to speak with us about Jennifer Kent's 2014 trauma tastic THE BABADOOK.

Here we go, full swing into 2025 with some classic 70s horror and a thrashy, metallic but most of all, crusty punk band. Its Igor Amadeus Cavalera from GO AHEAD AND DIE. We touch on the music, the writing, the horror history and of course The Tall Man.

Welcome back folks, to a mid month musical adventure with a band I adored back when i discovered them in the 90s. That band is Cell. I spoke with guitarist Ian James about the break up and the reformation of sorts and then we get stuck into the meat of the conversation. A Universal horror movie from back in the 30s no less. THE BLACK CAT. Can you believe it?
Alright! You wanted the best, you got the best. The greatest rock n roll horror movies ever in a neat and organised list. It's Horror Rocks. I watched, rated and ordered 74 movies from 1971 to 2024 in order to attempt to figure out just what exactly could be the greatest of them all. Joining me on my journey are several guests, drinking several Jack and Cokes over a glorious 4 episodes full of ripping riffs, pummelling drums and voices so stretched they are at breaking point. This is Horror Rocks.

It's Christmas day and right now it is time to discuss a modern Christmas classic with you. It's the time for Rare Exports. What's even better is today I am joined by one of my favourite ever recording artists. Ever. When I say ever... I mean... EVER. It's only Nina Nastasia. As I live and breathe.
No words.
It's about time we invited a Scumdog of the Universe onto the show. It must be difficult to plan a war against Gwar each night and yet Sawborg Destructo AKA Matt Maguire took time out of his gruelling schedule of world domination to do just that all because of this bond that joins us all here on the show. We are all just horror addicts.
It's time for more John Carpenter. It's the good stuff, right? Also, it's time to chat with Dennis Lyxzén, best known as the lead vocalist for influential Swedish hardcore punk band Refused, as well as the bands INVSN , The International Noise Conspiracy and Fake Names. So let's blend the two together and see what Frankenstein addled creation we can construct.

Horror and comedy is a tricky path to walk, and a comedy horror from the 60s, well, that bring up all sorts of issues, will it hold up today in ANY way? Here to help put Carry on Screaming to talk is the gifted Housemartins founder Stan Cullimore. I say say gifted because he has gifted me with decades of good vibes & great times thanks to the songs he helped write. Here I discover just what Stan has been up to since his departure from the band and of course a delve into his history with horror.
So, would you believe it. Today I chat with guitarist and vocalist Brix Smith Start on A Year In Horror. Yes! Her from The Fall, The Adult Net and Brix & the Extricated. This is what it's all about. The film she wanted to cover was Steven Spielberg's 'Duel'. For me the best ABC movie of the week that there ever was.

It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1965 was a low rent year for horror movies on the whole but some younger hot shot directors were beginning to change things. This week I caught up with Blaine Cook from the legendary Seattle crossover thrash band The Accüsed, for a chat about the 1976 Richard Donner classic The Omen. We also chat about the music of the The Accüsed, touring & of course his history with horror and he even decides on which is the most 'horror' of the The Accüsed splatter fuelled songs. It's all for you Damien!
Hey folks. Here is our ON THE DAY coverage of the latest instalment of the Terrifier franchise. TERRIFIER 3. I interview three of the key pieces of this magnificent puzzle of the perverse. Director Damien Leone, actor Daniel Roebuck and Producer Phil Falcone all here to talk us through the grossest film of the year.
Please welcome to A Year In Horror, special guest Jon Davis from the band Conan. We talk about the 1981, fantasy banger, the one that's full of that Ray Harryhausen stop motion stuff. We dig into Jon's history with horror and find out about his obsession with early 80s fantasy movies. Hold on tight, battle doomers!

What an episode this is. Today we welcome Jeffrey Lewis onto the show to discuss his music and of course the 1987 all time great horror movie, Evil Dead 2. Jeffrey goes deep as all hell into this so it gets discussed in detail, so on the off chance that you have not seen it. WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD. I hope you enjoy it s much as I did putting it together.
Today we chat with the USA noise rock menace that is HUMAN IMPACT. The band contains ex members of Swans and Daughters but also Chris Spencer from Unsane and Jim Coleman from Cop Shoot Cop. It was awesome to chat with them both about '28 Days Later', I've been listening to their music for decades. An absolute honour.
Today I chat with J. Robbins, that's right, THE J. Robbins that played in D.C. hardcore punk legends Government Issue and then he formed Jawbox and Burning Airlines amongst others. Now he is killing it having gone solo and his latest album Basilisk is getting some serious airtime in my house. To the point where I had to reach out and ask the man, do you like scary movies? We chat all things music and spooky stuff and then dip into the horror masterwork, The Night of the Hunter.

Welcome to the show Jason Lytle from Grandaddy who even though isnt a horror fanatic has chosen a film with one of the most horrific scenes in it ever filmed, to my mind. Ted Kotcheff's Wake In Fright. Australia is huge, you can get lost, both physically and mentally.
It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 2012 was for me, a little bit of a slacker for horror movies, some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, shnozwaddle! The highs are really high & the lows can be quite messy. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2012? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 5 hours of running time split over 3 episodes. This is 2012, A Year In Horror.

This week I met up with legendary metal drummer player Gene Hoglan, at one time or another he has been a member of Dark Angel, Death, Testament and Dethklock amongst a stack more and we chat about his history with horror and a little regarding our thoughts on the 1985 banger Re-Animator, it's as rejuvenating as a dose of the re-agent in the back of your head!

It's another big hitter episode but not as we know it. Over the past year I have been putting this show together, knowing that time will be short for me come spooky season. So I compiled my favourite parts from the video nasty series of the top tier, successfully prosecuted films over on Patreon and have put them in order of my least favourite to the movie that I think is the best. All the nasties with a total of 19 guests, a silly amount of booze and the filthiest 39 movies that you ever would see.
Between the interview segments there are various clips from an incredibly important documentary which is actually an episode from the BBC series 'Open Space' in which the public made programmes under their own editorial control. It's an episode called 'Suitable for Viewing in the Home?' from 1984. This gives some detailed context to pretty much all the conversations for this episode.

Wednesday 13 is bringing the Murderdolls music back to UK shores later this year and to celebrate we welcome him onto A Year In Horror to speak about his favourite ever movie. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. This conversation is a special one so crack open your poison, put on a face mask of your choice and rejoice in the filth of the cook and his family.
Today we are joined by Californian composer, bass guitarist, and double bassist Trevor Dunn. He came to prominence in the 1990s with the experimental band Mr. Bungle and has more than likely appeared on 100+ recording since. I say more than likely because I personally own 13 albums he has played on and I have barely scratched the surface. Here to reveal a little more about the man's music and his love for Brian De Palmer's Carrie. Please welcome the dude himself to A Year In Horror.

As a warm up for the deepest of dives on the video nasty phenomenon that will start in around a weeks time, I chat with Tim Kinsella; the legendary vocalist from Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc and countless others, about the rotten disasterpiece that is 'Faces of Death'. This episode is sick filth. Enjoy!
So, would you believe it. Today we return to the world of metal on A Year In Horror. Yes! Welcome to the mad minds of Swedish Thrash metal fright fiends F.K.Ü. Their latest album is entitled The Horror and the Metal. This is what it's all about. Today we speak with founder and bass player Patrik Sporrong aka Pat Splat about the band, his history with horror and of course John Carpenter's Halloween.
Welcome, one and all to a rather special episode of the A Year In Horror mid month music specials where I chat with a musician about horror movies. This week I've been joined by underground legend Greg Anderson, head of Southern Lord Recordings & founder of bands such as Sunn O))), Goatsnake, Engine Kid and his latest dollop of doom The Lord. In fact we are celebrating the release of the new album "Worship: Bernard Herrmann Tribute" by The Lord in this very episode. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did organising and completing it. I LOVE THIS JOB.

It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1995 was not a massive year for horror movies but if you are into sci-fi horror & sci-fi well then this is gonna be a bonanza for you. So many big budget also-rans as well... Sheesh! But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1995? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 5+ hour running time split over 4 episodes. This is 1995, A Year In Horror.
It's a pretty long journey this one, part 4 of 4 in fact. I am going to give you the time codes below so if you don't want spoilers then, please, avert your eyes.

Special guest, Jonah Matranga , singer with Far, Gratitude, New End Original, Onelinedrawing and now Sons of Alpha Centauri is chatting with us today about the 1986 grime fest Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Plus we get his history with horror and a low down on some key parts of his career so far. Mostly though, it's pure sick filth.
Jonah Matranga / Far / Onelinedrawing / Sons of Alpha Centauri
Please welcome to A Year In Horror, special guest Isa Holliday from the band Slow Crush. We talk about the 1990, Stephen King adapted, It. It's remake became the highest selling horror film ever, but was it really better than the OG?
*The painting on the cover I absolutely love. It's by John Aslarona.
It's time for one of those massive episodes. What do I think was the greatest horror movie that came out in during the 1940s? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A stack of also rans. A bunch of mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer & just over a 5 hour running time. This is the 1940s, a decade in horror. So as a little taster to the massive 1940s episodes which go live here on April 1st we are dropping this single film focused episode here today in celebration of a fantastic new record. You see, Albert Lewin directed Pandora and the Flying Dutchman in 1951 and The Moon and Sixpence in 1941 but The Picture of Dorian Gray is easily his best known work, sadly, he is not known for a lot else. So When I asked musician Charles Moothart from Fuzz to pick a movie to cover for this show, imagine my delight when he came back with Dorian Gray as his choice. This is a discussion about his new solo record and the Angela Lansbury starring 40s horror movie The Picture of Dorian Gray. Seriously. What a belter!
Special guest, Charles Cave, the horror loving bass player from UK indie rockers White Lies speaks with us today about the 1988 underseen classic The Vanishing. Plus we get into his introduction to horror movies, hearing his music being played in films & just why the band's song titles are so upsetting!
Today I chat with Preston Bryant, the guitarist, keyboard player and backing vocalist for the Phoenix, Arizona folk punkers AJJ who in 2023, released their latest album 'Disposable Everything'. We chat all things horror and dip into the bizarre body horror masterwork from director David Cronenberg: Videodrome.
Holy Smokes, it's one of my very favourite bands of the 'right now' chatting about one of my very favourite films from the 'back then'. Los Bitchos discuss Rosemary's Baby to play out this big hitter of A Year In Horror where we are exploring the greatest horror movies from 1968.
It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1968 was a ground breaking year for horror movies, well, as far as the big hitter films are concerned anyways. The highs are really high & the lows are few & far between. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1968? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. Today I chat with Steve Hackett, the legendary guitarist from Genesis about the Francis Ford Coppola directed masterpiece, Bram Stoker's Dracula. Steve is now 30 albums deep into an incredible solo career which this week has seen the release of his latest opus, a rite of passage concept stunner entitled 'The Circus And The Nightwhale'. This episode is a cracker. Enjoy!
I think Eye of the Devil is an undercard for 1966
But there is no denying there is something magical about it. I just can't put my finger on it.
J. Lee Thompson directed Cape Fear in 1962, Happy Birthday to Me in 1981 plus a couple of Planet of the Apes movies as part of his genre sweep during his career. Eye of the Devil is often overlooked which is a real shame. When I asked the fantastic satanic doo-woppers TWIN TEMPLE to pick a movie to cover for this show, imagine my delight when they came back with that very choice. YES! Today we are joined by singer Alexandra Jones and her guitarist husband Zach. That's right! It's the time of the Temple. Right here, right now.
Yes, Yes, Yes. This is one of the big hitter episodes that I planned out before even episode 1 of A Year In Horror. I get to watch every single Stephen King adaptation and then rank them from worst to best. That's right, EVERY ONE! Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and over 7 hours of running time split over 4 episodes. This Stephen King, A Lifetime In Horror.

This week I caught up with Michael Berdan from the New York City based noise rockers Uniform for a chat about the 1979 Don Coscarelli classic Phantasm. We also chat about the music of the Uniform, touring with Boris & of course his history with horror & he even decides on which is the most 'horror' of the Uniform songs. Rowdy!
The Civil Dead is in select cinemas and on demand from 19 January 2024
That's yesterday if you catch this episode on the day of release.
And today I spoke with the two chaps behind this film and I give it a top tier recommendation from A Year In Horror. What a way to start the year.
More please...
It's mid month - It's music time - It's horror time - & here on A Year In Horror we aint afraid of no Gost.
Very rarely indeed is it that a relatively new artist will take hold of my very essence & rattle it about enough to shake up what I consider my untouchable top 10 artists ever list in music but thats just what Gost did when I discovered them shortly after the release of their sophomore album, Behemoth. This is the sort of conversation that takes place when i fanboy over a life changer. Enjoy!

Please welcome to A Year In Horror, special guest Rosy Bones from the band Goat Girl. We talk about the 1998, John Pieplow directed, Strangeland. You want internet chat rooms, leather pants, nu metal, body modification, top knots, torture basements, BDSM & AOL screen interface, well, press play on this bad boy & your dreams will come true.
Please welcome to A Year In Horror, special guest Mike Bourne from psychedelic, space and post rockers Teeth of the Sea. We discuss Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani's The Strange Color Of My Body’s Tears. A giallo but not really film which is probably weirder than even his band is. Check it out.
Please welcome to A Year In Horror, special guest Alexander Heff from the band Going Off. We talk about the 2018, Ari Aster directed, Hereditary. In my eyes this one is already a classic. So what if the ending freaked some people out. I loved it & want to talk about it with as many people as I can. Thanks for listening.
Happy Christmas to all of you that celebrate it & to all you that don't... alright, how you doin? Today we are joined by hardcore punk modern day legends Cancer Bats. In particular Jaye R. Schwarzer, a man who has blasted the wax from my eardrums on several occasions & he is at it again. This time though, we are talking horror movies & in particular the 1974 proto-slasher Black Christmas. What a time to be alive!

It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a four parter anyways. 2014 was for me, a classic year for horror movies, Some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, balderdash! The highs are really high & the lows are few & far between. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1963? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and over 4 hours of running time split over 3 episodes. This is 1963, A Year In Horror.
Today sees the UK cinema release of Doctor Jekyll. The very movie that is re-launching the mother of all UK horror studios, Hammer Films. I was invited to the Red Carpet premier, I had a plus one, invited my good chum in Howard H Smith from Talking Bollocks podcast & we documented the evening in podcastular form. That's what we do. Here are the results.
I am aware now that Eddie Izzard prefers now the pronouns of she/her and I want to make it clear that at the time of the recording of the podcast I was still under the impression that her pronouns were fluid. After a quick google search I found that that changed in 2020. Apologies.

Back with a smily face & a deep breath before you press play. This is a catch up with the lead actor from the 2022 released movie, Annie Hardie (the 2021 film festival run can not be included, c'mon you know the drill on A Year In Horror by now). It's been a couple of years since Dashcam was having its festival run & I wanted to get the lowdown from her on how she feels about the movie with this space in between its release & right now. How does anyone cope with the social media attacks like she faced, well, I asked. This episode is the result.
I ramble on for maybe 15 minutes before the interview with Annie begins.
Enjoy
What an episode this is. Today we welcome London May onto the show to discuss his music & of course the Serbian extreme horror movie, A Serbian Film. London reached out to director Srđan Spasojević for information about the film & what he received back was mind blowing. We discuss this thing in detail. I hope you enjoy it s much as I did putting it together.
It's time for one of those massive episodes. Well, it's a four parter anyways. 2008 was a pretty low key year for horror movies. Of course there were tons of them released but except for the likes of Cloverfield & the fifth Saw sequel, I don't recall the world in general going nuts for any of this stuff. Looking at my findings today, it appears that with horror we looked away from America for the real gems . But what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during '08? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 5+ hour running time split over 3 episodes. UK post rocking underground legends COLDBONES have recently announced that they have gone on a hiatus. This was recorded just a few days before that announcement. I get it, of course, once you appear on A Year In Horror it's difficult to see where your art can go from there. How do you top the highest high? It's a question for the ages that... not so the question of the validity of the second Hellraiser sequel. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. Should this thing exist. Well, of course we answer this & much more in another thrilling mid month musical episode of A Year In Horror.
One again we delve into the darkness with a mid month musical detour. Today we pester Ian Farmer from the likes of Modern Baseball & Slaughter Beach, Dog all about his career so far in music, his love of horror movies & of course Hellbound: Hellraiser II. TIME TO PLAY.
To kick off the coverage of the first three HELLRAISER movies this September we welcome onto the show Pinhead himself, Mr. Doug Bradley. Is this the best moment that ever was & ever will be. Yeah, course it was.

Lucky McKee is the director of many a horror banger, my 4 personal favourites being May (2002), The Woman (2011), Sick Girl (2006) & Old Man (2022). Today, join me in a celebration of one of those, his disturbing horror classic, May. Second Sight films have released a lavish Bluray box set & I took that as a good as excuse as any to reach out to him.
