It's been a minute, but your Afternoonas are back with a deep dive with the 2014 drama, It's Okay, That's Love. This was a request from our podcast middle child, Lia, who thought Megan might like the drama and was pretty sure Amy wouldn't like the drama, and guess what? We all loved it! So hop on board and join us as we discuss such hard-hitting topics as sandals, sex on the beach, and throwing tomatoes. BUT FOR REAL, FOLKS, this drama has some incredible twists and turns, so we urge you to watch at least through episode four if you don't want one of the twistiest twists spoiled for you. Otherwise, hop on board the sandal-slapping train for one wild ride!

We are starting a new series today where we examine a first episode for all its conflicts and tropes. Today's pick is Megan's choice: I Am Not A Robot. We get into why the first scene is so epic, why the conflict is dripping with butter, and why it makes us want to watch more.

Lia is dropping in hot with a snack-sized episode celebrating her new release Puck and Prejudice and 3 K-dramas that use isekai (water portals) which served as her inspiration: Splash, Splash Love, Moon Lovers, and Mr. Queen. She also says she'll talk about the election and the world and romance for just a second, but spoiler: it's more than a second. Anyway...her first book in seven years is out and you should check it out for good karma, K-drama easter eggs, and good vibes.

We were long overdue for this one! Welcome to our 2024 installment of Second Lead SOS where we take a beloved second lead from a drama, one who did NOT get a romantic happily ever after (or in Lia's case, did not even get to live), and we write them the story we know they deserve. Do our choices surprise you? Would you watch these dramas if they actually existed? Do you have a second lead you'd like us to consider the next time we do an SOS? We can't wait to hear what you think!

Today Amy and Lia have the pleasure of talking to costume designer/maker Lynne Martens who scored a press pas to L.A.'s K-Con and got to breathe the same air as Park Min-Young, Rowoon, Kim Soo-Hyun, and Taemin, to name a few. We loved getting to hear Lynne's K-Drama and K-Pop origin story, how she's only two Kevin Bacons away from Ji Chang-Wook and Lee Min-Ho, and of course what it was like to brave the chaotic joy of K-Con! You can find Lynne on Instagram and TikTok at @hallyuwithme and @hallyu.with.me. Check out her YouTube Channel (also @hallyuwithme) for all the K-Pop and K-Drama joy. When someone whispers "angsty" about a drama, buckle up! You're in for a ride that could twist your insides like a pretzel and possibly leave you ugly-crying into your mattress. So, what's your flavor? Are you the type who thrives on emotional turbulence, eagerly lapping up every tear and heartache? Or do you prefer your stories fluffy as a cloud, with just a pinch of angst to keep things interesting? We explore the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Your Afternoonas are in summer vacation mode...but don't worry, we won't leave ya'll hanging. In order to get some time off, but also keep content coming, we developed the concept of three summer rogue episodes. Each host will be in charge of one and can do whatever it is their little heart desires. Lia is up first. She brought in a very special, very non-secret guest...MEGAN. Why is her regular co-host a special guest? Because we recorded this show passed out on her hotel bed after walking 23,000 steps through Manhattan complete with a thunderstorm and four kids in tow. Join us for the joy of recording in human form together, and also upcoming 2024 K-dramas we are anticipating!

Join Lia and Special Guest Lexi as we do a dive deep into the 2016 South Korean film, "A Man and a Woman". Directed by Lee Yoon-ki (Love Talk, One Day), this spare and affecting story follows two individuals, both struggling with their personal lives, who find solace and unexpected love in each other. Starring Jeon Do-yeon and Gong Yoo, the film explores the complexities of human emotions, Gong Yoo's butt (sorry but let's be real... many people have checked out the movie for this reason), and Lia can't resist doing "Am I The A**hole" pondering on at least one character. Also this is a love story NOT a romance, I repeat...love story > romance.

On this month's Uncensored episode, Megan and Lia touch on cliffhangers--a tried-and-true narrative technique that writers use to keep their audience on the hook. It's all about creating suspense and leaving the story unresolved at a pivotal moment, making readers itching to know what happens next. Writers employ cliffhangers strategically, often at the end of chapters, episodes, or installments, to maintain audience interest in continuing on.
Cliffhangers come in many forms, from surprising plot twists to life-changing decisions, and they can be found across various storytelling mediums, including books, TV shows, and even serialized podcasts. They've been a staple of storytelling for centuries, dating back to the serialized novels of the Victorian era, and continue to be a popular technique in contemporary literature and entertainment. So, the next time you find yourself cursing a Drama writer for leaving you hanging, just remember: it's all part of the grand tradition of storytelling.
And let's be real, we wouldn't have it any other way.

How do our own internal biases affect our judgment of whether or not a character is likable? And can an unlikable hero or heroine redeem themselves to become likable in the end? ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★Join Lia, Sarah (Afternoona Asks/Kdrama This) and Megan (Afternoona Army) for a deep dive in the 2018 drama Something In The Rain (aka Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) starring Jung Hae-in and Son Ye-jin. This drama is about a thirty-something woman (whose routine has gotten stale) and the romance she strikes up with her little brother's best friend. This is a heart-felt slice of life where characters grapple with taboos, misogyny, desire (in lovers, life, the universe, and everything) and a mom who is notorious within K-drama Land--but Sarah unpacks very thoughtfully using a Confucian lens. While we can't say we love where the drama ended, and we're split on the OST, are we glad we went along for the ride? Tune in to find out!

We're back for another Afternoona Check-in...this time the conversation revolves around about Chicken Nugget-the 2024 drama airing on Netflix where a woman turns into...wait for it...a chicken nugget. Once upon a time Lia, Megan and Amy watched our first few Korean dramas and began an obsessive text chat. Then we started a podcast and the rest was history. Fast forward three (for real THREE) years later and look...we get really curious about ya'll. Who is listening? How did you get involved in this fandom? So we decided to flip the script and put a couple listeners up front. Join us as we meet Emma (who coined the term 'Kim Fin' and destroyed Megan and Amy's underwear) and Katherine (who as a working actor has fascinating insights to share about acting choices in dramas). This was a real treat and we'd like to do it again sometimes. Also, we need to start lifting our game because our listeners are funny, smart, and far cooler than us!

In today's episode, we fall headfirst into Doona, a 2023 Netflix drama about messy love. We discuss how well it fits into the New Adult genre of publishing, the messiness of our own New Adult lives, and why we suddenly want pink toe socks. Oh, and we talk about the kiss--yes, THAT kiss--and the controversial ending.

Kim Shin and Ji Eun Tak...Orchid and Moon Supreme...Jacob and Renesmee...Lia and a dying Christmas tree? What do they all have in common? If you guessed werewolf imprinting on an ovum, sorry. That only applies to one of our couples. But if you said, fated mates...you win the covted prize of...being right. It's time for another trope study, and today we get to talk about one of our favorite romance tropes and how K-drama makes it work across various romance genres.

Join Megan, Amy, and Lia as we review our favorite dramas this year (and we haven't yet caught some of the most popular ones like Twinkling Watermelon and Moving so don't @ us lol). Who got us by the throat, which kisses made us swoon, and what plot lines are we manifesting for 2024?

In today's episode, Lia and Megan welcome special guest Becky (It's Bananas) to discuss My Dearest, an epic historical saga with a swoony hero, a never-say-quit heroine, and a plot that also never quits. We get into the good, the bad, and everything in between. But one thing we agree on is that this cast gave their all.

This one is a doozy, folks, but also so much fun! We're missing Lia today, but Amy and Megan hold down the fort--or at least try to--for an epic, mind-bending, deep dive into the swoony time travel drama, A Time Called You. We loved this one, but trying to explain it might have irrevocably broken both of our brains. We hope yours stays intact! And if you want to get transported back to 1998, pop "Gather My Tears" by Seo Ji Won into your Walkman, and hop on the bus for one wild, romantic ride!

Lia is alllllllllllll by herseeeeeeeeeellllllllfffff. Just kidding, she has Afternoona Asks co-host, Sarah, to discuss the My Liberation Notes, the 2022 drama by Park Hae-Young (Another Miss Oh, My Mister). The Korean Herald said the drama is "a portrait of a generation trapped by the preconditions set by themselves and the society" and Gong Yoo even took to his Instagram to cajole fans into checking it out. So, look, Amy and Megan aren't interested in this type of slow-burn, slice of life story. If you want high stakes action, you're not going to find it here. There is no parkour. There are no super heroes. There are no big laughs. But if you are willing to slow down and trust a storyteller (and an outstanding cast) to weave magic, make meaning of the mundane, and slowly allow characters to take ownership of their life.... you are in for a well-deserved treat.
Also, Mr. Gu. Sweaty. Sad. Shady. Silent. SO HOTTTTT. The hype is real.

But most importantly, we attempt to sell each other on K-dramas (and two movies and a JBL) that we've recently enjoyed. Offerings include: Ballerina, Love to Hate You, The Worst of Evil, Mood of the Day, My Personal Weatherman, and Doona (Lia is ready to throw hands against the Doona haters). Did we sell you on any? The next few weeks are wild with Lia going to Seoul, Megan off to ride a segway in wine country, and Amy traveling for concerts. So we decided to squeeze in one group Uncensored for a little bonding joy. This month we do fantasy casting, discuss what makes a ride-or-die favorite, give some book recs based on drama vibes, and Megan ENRAGES Lia over her stance on Moon Lovers. In fact, even as Lia writes these words (in the third person) she is physically upset all over again and wants to debate. HASHTAG NEVER OVER IT. Get into all the unscripted K-drama goodness with us and yes, Lia drops out five minutes from the end when she accidentally unplugs her mic. But be gentle with her...it's Megan's fault.

We are back with more trope talk. Tune in as we explore the secret ingredients that make romance stories delicious and the creative twists that keep them fresh. This week, Lia, Megan and Amy dissect and celebrate one of the most beloved tropes in romantic fiction..."Grumpy/Sunshine." From the brooder with a heart of gold (who often gets a redemptive arc) to the sunny optimist who brings warmth to even the coldest of hearts (and is usually good at banter), we explore how these contrasting personalities collide and, more often than not, find love in the most unexpected places. Oh, Lia also got bit in the face by a spider. And does Amy figure out a way to work Goblin into the conversation? Is it a day ending in y?

Lia was told to watch MY BEAUTIFUL MAN by Alison. Then Megan. Then Alison. Then Megan. Then Alison just decided to bug her every single week about it until she relented. And guess what...she did love it Sam I Am! In fact, this is in her tippy top tier of dramas now. She rewatched three times in a week. With no friends and a stutter, Hira Kazunari (Riku Hagiwara) isn’t exactly enjoying his life as a high schooler. Things get complicated when he falls for the class’s “King”, Kiyoi Sou (Yusei Yagi). Adapted from the novel, “He, Who is Beautiful” by Nagira Yuu, “My Beautiful Man” is a 2021 romantic high school drama directed by Mai Sakai. The trope done best by this drama is that of the misunderstood hero. It's a chef's kiss. The only issue now is HOW DO WE WATCH THE MY BEAUTIFUL MAN MOVIE WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE USA. GAH

"Because This Is My First Life" is a South Korean drama that follows the lives of Seoul professionals in their 30s, struggling with societal expectations, relationships, and personal aspirations. Nam Se-hee, a programmer who values his solitude, enters into a marriage contract with Yoon Ji-ho, an aspiring writer in need of affordable housing. As they navigate the complexities of their unconventional arrangement, they become entangled in the romantic and professional challenges faced by their friends and colleagues. The series delves into themes of modern love, career pressures, and societal norms, exploring how these characters confront and reshape their lives to find happiness and fulfillment. If you have a soft spot for a marriage of convenience trope...and let's be real...who doesn't...then you'll want to get into it with us.
Does Lia explain how she almost died? Does Megan click her pen enough to make Amy wild? Also yes.

It all started with a message from Tonya to Amy on Instagram. "The Rose is playing a special Lollapalooza after show on Friday, August 4 in Chicago...would you want to go?" Spoiler alert. I said "YES," and I am now a changed woman. Join us for a very special Afternoona Delight and Afternoona Army collaboration with me (Amy) and Tonya as we recap the experience of seeing The Rose at their post Lolla midnight show at The Vic Theatre in Chicago. We take you on a meandering tour through the Chicago suburbs to a local K-Pop store, bubble tea cafe, and dinner and snacks at Joong Boo market before finally heading to the city to wait in a line two blocks long with the lovely, welcoming Black Rose community. Then...the transformative experience of seeing The Rose live, getting home at 3:00 a.m., and decompressing the day after. It's a whole journey, folks, and I'm so grateful to Tonya for taking me on it!

The tagline of Dream (2023, co-written and directed by Lee Byeong-heon) is: You are hopeless, helpless and homeless? No, you are NOT! Dream leans in hard to the classic underdog tropes and is loosely based on the real-life 2010 Homeless World Cup. Maybe you were moved and shed a tear like Megan or perhaps you felt a bit more meh like Amy and Lia. Either way, kick the sports ball plot down the (very small) field and ponder why IU was recording an entire documentary on her hand-held camera. Also, warning, Lia's Mpbs were not scoring any goals either.

Good Bad Mother Deep Dive - A Good or Bad KDrama?
We have an Afternoona sister pod mashup as Afternoona Army Megan and Afternoona Asks Sarah crash the podcast to do a Deep Dive on Good Bad Mother. Megan & Sarah gush over Lee Doh Hyun’s performance, disagree on the humour in the drama and give a wag of the finger at the parental abuse depicted. However, these two romance fans loved the central couple and their love story.
We go into why this drama isn’t quite what you’d expect from the fluffy poster and cute pig intro and discuss all the contentious topics this drama generated during its airing earlier this year. Megan recs this drama but Sarah doesn't - found out why in the podcast!

This is the moment where the conflicts your protaganists have struggled with since the beginning of the story come to a head and all hope seems lost. Maybe the leads thought they could get past their issues, but a setback has happened to make them realize they were capital W wrong. The strongest black moments feed on the characters’ weaknesses and make them think those conflicts truly are insurmountable. This is the time for the writer to be as mean as possible. Take characters to the places where they feel hopeless about a possible bright future. In a romance, when writing a strong black moment, the leads subsequent happily ever after will feel more deserved. TL;DR: the darker the black moment, the happier the HEA feels.
Book reference: Gwen Hayes's Romancing the Beat
A note on colorism in language: We want to acknowledge that while the term "black moment" is conventionally used in writing...is that the type of word/phrase we should be using as writers? Moving forward we will be examining our use of terminology like this and paying attention to where it can be contributing to a white supremacist framework.

Park Chan-Wook’s (Oldboy) “The Handmaiden” is a love story, thriller and subversive Gothic film set in Japanese-occupied Korea (and Japan itself) in the 1930s. It is by turns beautiful, bestial, occasionally brutal. The story centers around a plucky pickpocket ( Kim Tae-ri), who gets a job as a handmaiden at the estate of a rich and eccentric book collector (Lee Yong-nyeo), serving him and Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), the niece of his late wife. There's also a scheme devised by a poor Korean fisherman who presents as a fake Japanese count and desires to marry the heiress before committing her to an asylum to claim her fortune. We don't want to give much away in this non-linear film but urge you to give it a try (note it's NSFW)...you'll never look at mannequins, thimbles, silver bells, or octopus the same way again.
Intrigued? Good. You should be.

At long last, Kim Woo Bin is here! We have been WAITING for Black Knight, so you better believe we had high expectations. Did the drama live up to those expectations? We'll get into that. Does Megan Confuse WALL-E and The Lorax? Absolutely. Does Lia spoil Silent Sea at about the 64 minute mark? Maybe. And does Amy ignore plot holes and enjoy a ridiculous death race? She sure does. But Kim Woo Bin is perfection as 5-8, his eyebrows are fantastic as the second male lead, and neither of them look at explosions.

We just wanted to see where the hour would take us, and folks...it took us to muppet-talking frost trolls. You're welcome! We also talk about what we're currently watching, our anticipation of Black Knight (which we will have hopefully binged by the time this airs), and whether or not we are all in for silliness and camp of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938. This episode also contains another guest appearance by Megan's train. Choo choo!

Does it matter? IDK. But it's also very influential. Lia is on the fence overall, but Alison makes a compelling case for why it deserves attention. It's an enemies to lovers, forced proximity story that highlights personal growth, acceptance, and the ability to embrace your authentic self.

In a previous podcast, Lia tried to sell Megan and Amy on a drama. She thought she made a pretty good case. But not good enough because neither of her co-hosts ever watched OUR BLUES. But you know who did? Our friend of the pod, Afternoona Asks host, and founder of K-drama This, Sarah. We refuse to let this beautiful, emotive, excellently-written drama fly under the radar for one more day.
From Romeo and Juliet teen pregnancy to depression to feuds to fish markets...slice of life dramas may not be for everyone but if you want to feel like you are part of a multifaceted Jeju community for twenty episodes...get into it. Your heart will thank you. Plus Kim Woo Bin is a hot boat captain who has heart eyes for a haenyo noona.

We're back with our new-ish monthly feature "Afternoona Uncensored" where we have no script, no edits (except for the entire work call Lia accidentally took on air and graciously removed), and all the unexpected. We have more This or That's, ponder Lee Jae-Wook wrecking our floor/morals/sanity, Lee Dong Wook's perennial staying power, Park Seo Joon's upcoming star turn in Marvels (cool except what's up with the hair, bro), to an in-depth unpacking of the female gaze and why it can't really be compared to the male one. Plus MUCH more. So make like a 400 year old alien and grab a towel, hop in the shower, and let's see what happens.

Antiheroes are ambiguous and complex and come with a dark side. But despite their flaws and even occasionally questionable morals, an antihero is ultimately on the side of good. After all...they aren't the antagonist. But you might embark on your own villain origin story after listening to Megan describe the plot to Pitch Black in more detail than required.

This week we're digging into Moon Lovers aka Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. The drama is a 2016 Korean adaptation of the 2011 Chinese drama Scarlet Heart. It stars Lee Joon-gi, IU, and Kang Ha-neul (as well as most everyone else in K-dramalandia).
The story follows a modern day young woman, Go Ha Jin, who mysteriously gets swept back in time after saving a little kid from drowning. She comes to in the body of a lady's maid, Hae Soo, and decides...welp when in the Goryeo (I'm sure 14 hot shirtless princes who like to frolic in a smoldering hot spring doesn't hurt).
This drama is divisive. Do you think it's an addictive sweeping ride that excuses any missteps...or are you so caught up in the plot holes and wtf that you couldn't commit? Join Lia and special correspondent, Sarah from K-Drama This, as they set up into two opposing camps. But admit it, ya'll. You sort of love when we disagree.
However, no matter what, we are united in our love for Lee Joon-gi and his emo Phantom of the Opera style mask and emotional boo boos.

We might reveal it a little before the spoiler section, at about the 35 minute mark. Consider yourself warned. But also consider yourself in for a treat with a drama that is one wild ride of action, comedy, romance, motorcycles, loud Hawaiian shirts, fighting baddies in unique and surprising ways, and a sucker punch of an emotional ending. It was a roller coaster of a season with a mud pit wrestle to the near death, a mysterious bad boy, an earnest good boy, and a couple who seemed to really fall in love (even though Megan fast-forwarded through them). Lia sends an open invitation to host KyuHyun that she's free to go to Paradise if he ever wants to swim some laps.

Was The King: Eternal Monarch fantastic or a flop? We discuss why this Kdrama has our favorite scene of all time (hint: it involves a white horse), why Woo Do Hwan is a precious human who should be protected at all costs, and which plot holes bugged us the most (what was up with the red balloons?). Also try to say Manpasikjeok three times fast.

What is the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation? Since we are three white American romance writers doing a show centered on exploring Korean dramas, this feels like an important topic to address early on.
Our intent with this podcast is to honor and celebrate the craft that goes into Kdrama and the fun ways writers play with romance tropes in particular, without inadvertently diminishing Korean people or relegating them into stereotypes. We discuss definitions of appropriation and appreciation, share how we are trying to connect with culture in ways like language studies and history, things to avoid, and how positive racism is also a thing.

Megan and Amy discuss why they love this plot line that's common in Korean dramas and Lia explains why this isn't her jam, but she's all for inner angsty pain. Does that count? We talk about our favorite wounded hero scenes in K-dramas as well as in our own books.

Topics include: Is Captain Ri (played by Hyun Bin) the perfect alpha? What’s the difference between a character who is an alpha and one who is an alphahole? Why is Yoon Se-Ri (played by Son Ye-jin) a boss in every sense of the word? How can we appreciate Se-Ri’s arc from a feminist perspective?
And the all important—who wore it better, Captain Ri in his North Korean military uniform and bowl cut or Captain Ri in Seoul rocking swept-back hair and a suit?
