For obvious reasons, Amanda is trying to void the lease that Taylor signed with Matt; for equally obvious reasons, she's annoyed that Kyle doesn't seem to care where Taylor lives or what she does. Then Amanda overhears Peter yelling at Taylor about her pregnancy, and tells Kyle about it. And when Kyle asks Taylor about it, she says that not only is it true...but that Kyle must be the father because Peter is sterile. Obviously, Peter is not thrilled that this rumor about him is going around the complex, until Taylor tells him that they can use this lie to break up Kyle and Amanda and reunite with their original partners. Coop has arranged for his extremely offscreen fancy surgeon friend to operate on Michael's hands; Jennifer uses this potentially dangerous moment in Michael's life to manipulate Megan into spending time with him again. It's lucky for Coop that everyone's too self-involved to notice how much attention he is paying to everything anyone says about Michael in his presence. Craig is still raw from the loss of Sydney, though not so raw that he isn't still going to the office of his new fake company to half-ass his job. Not even Jennifer's grief-inspired sexual surrogacy can get him back on track, so -- mere days after they all left and collapsed D&D -- Amanda's former employees would like her to perform a hostile takeover of Sky High and hire them all back, please. And who knows: Craig might even appreciate that too, if it gives him more time to plot against Sam. Rejoice: we're flying in with our podcast on "The Trojan Stork"!

Megan snitches to Kyle about Jennifer's new strip club job, from which he extricates her just before she's about to accept a promotion from server to performer, setting her up in his apartment...alone, because it's time for Amanda and Kyle to journey to the Dominican Republic to finalize their quickie divorces, but oh no! Amanda's apparently terrible travel agent booked them in a resort that has had its one road washed out during the rainy season, so they're going to have to stay in a VERY rustic beach shack arranged by a random cab driver Kyle meets at the airport! Roughing it eventually brings out the best in Amanda, and the two get closer commiserating, some more, about the end of their marriages. But can it last, given Kyle's current house guest? Jennifer also witnesses Michael and Taylor scheming to trick Peter into thinking he has rage epilepsy and is physically abusing Taylor during blackouts; Taylor excitedly plants a big kiss on Michael to seal their evil deal, which Jennifer is delighted to report to Megan later. The cops release Billy and Sam, continuing to surveil them in a way that does not involve watching the back of their apartment, which Jim uses to enter and demand $10,000 and a ticket to Mexico, or else he'll tell the cops they were in on his whole plan. And this is not the only threat in the episode: after Sydney comes clean to Craig about the plot she hatched with Harry, and how he tried to hold her to it after she wanted to stop, Craig rides to her rescue. And in the "about to leave the show" plot basement, Alison and Jake plan to move to Ojai and buy a restaurant; and Matt and Denise continue scrapping over Chelsea. Sydney's not thrilled that the grift she and Harry ran on D&D has resulted in actual injury for her. She is thrilled that he thinks they can take the agency for $5 million. Amanda's not worried about the lawsuit since this is exactly why they have insurance, but whoops, it turns out their policy renewal required some exclusions: of course the rickety stairs to the Business Balcony were among them, and of course Craig never got around to fixing them. But it's fine because he knows how to solve this problem: he'll just seduce Sydney so she drops the suit! Hey, I have a great icebreaker about one thing they have in common: carelessness with their insurance policies. Amanda can't concern herself too much with this, because she's got Kyle to hang out with AS FRIENDS. Just friends on the dance floor, talking about their dreams! That's a much more pleasant topic for her than a disastrous job interview she's just conducted with one Jennifer Mancini -- yes, Michael's younger sister, who's just shown up in L.A. to start a new life, but not in advertising. When Sam warns her father that the feds are on to him, he declines her suggestion that he turn himself in; instead, he sneaks out to a motel, Sam lies to Billy that he went to Chicago, and then easily gets $500 out of him to pass on to Jim to finance his vague plans of fleeing the country. Matt and Denise are still wrangling over Chelsea, and Jake still has one very special ex: Colleen is in town to ask for his help with David, and to make things weird for Alison. Having lost everything thanks to Hilda's scam lawsuit, Sydney still doesn't want to accept Hilda's lawyer's offer to become his new partner in financial crime, but it's hard to deny they make a good team when they grift $2000 off another driver in well under two minutes flat. So she seeks a job waiting tables at Kyle's, which he's happy to give her as soon as he confirms it's really going to bug Taylor. But how long will Sydney hold out against Harry's attractive pitch -- particularly once she realizes she could use their combined skills against Amanda, her main rival for Kyle's affections? The aforementioned Taylor has problems outside the restaurant, too, as Peter keeps buying her dowdy clothes; when Kyle returns Peter and Beth's wedding album to her, she finally figures out exactly why Peter's giving her this extreme makeover. Sydney's not the only one hitting up a neighbor for a job in hospitality: Sam gets Jake to give her dad, Jim, a job at Shooters. Not even Billy's report of receiving threats from Jim about their relationship can convince Sam that his sudden return is worrisome and that Jim is keeping secrets from her. And she's not the only one awkwardly reuniting with a parent: Chelsea's mother Denise returns, much to Matt's chagrin. Jake and Alison decide to let fate determine where they're going to elope, and Megan refuses instructions from Michael on a scheme to undermine Peter, but accepts advice from Kimberly's ghost on how to keep their marriage alive. The last episode having left both Alison and Kimberly in possibly mortal danger from their own bodies (and not fire, or Michael, as is usually the case), it makes sense that they share the A plot. Alison has been hospitalized with toxemia and orders not to do anything that might raise her blood pressure, including watch TV -- which seems crazy until some gossip Jake relays (well, look who's suddenly not to good to repeat scandalous stories) makes her laugh herself into a seizure. Mrs. Shaw has responded to Michael's call and is, justifiably, horrified by the sight of her daughter's condition. But while Kimberly wants to leave Los Angeles on good terms with the only two characters who are still speaking to her, Mrs. Shaw (again, justifiably) hates Michael and doesn't want to co-operate. Billy's not happy with the way Sam's father Jim is taking advantage of her, and the more he learns about Jim's life of crime, the less he likes him. And while Sam herself is clearly also uncomfortable about Jim's return to her life, Sydney can't notice or care, since she's busy defending herself, very badly, against Hilda's nuisance suit. Peter may have moved on from Amanda, but he's apparently yet to move on from Beth, while Amanda ruins Craig's attempts to spend time with her outside of work by inviting Kyle along. And Chelsea's mother actually decides to phone her half-orphaned child at Matt's, and announce her plans to take Chelsea back to Paris with her. Alison continues to go stir-crazy on cervix-related bed rest, so when Amanda announces that she's taking over one of Alison's big clients, Alison decides the money is too important, and sneaks into the office for a day to do the pitch herself. Of course this is the one day Jake ever comes home early from Shooters, and the return of Seething Incubator Cop Jake is unwelcome to say the least. Things are far different for Alison's boss, however! Taylor has fully moved in with Peter, ignoring all hints and direct recommendations that she not plan to make it permanent. And the way people are sharing her personal business, she shouldn't plan on going back to Kyle, either: Amanda tells him what she heard Jake heard Alison heard in the courtyard in the last episode, so Kyle confronts Taylor and finally gets her to admit the whole truth about why they live in Los Angeles now. But if divorce has turned Kyle into a twisted husk, Amanda is living her best life: buying a Jaguar, killing the game at work, and flirting with Kyle -- maybe for real, and maybe just for sport. Michael decides that the way to make sure Megan doesn't accidentally become a sex worker again is to give her a straight job, which is how she becomes the practice's newest receptionist. It's also how she happens to be present when Kimberly's neurologist shows up to tell Michael that Kimberly is at risk of dying from an aneurysm if she won't agree to surgery. Michael either doesn't believe it or doesn't care, but when Megan goes to see her, she can tell the danger to Kimberly's life is very real, and does what all Burns-Mancini office staffers do: she steals from the practice (this time, to send a nurse to take care of Kimberly). While Sydney tries to handle her lawsuit -- which is going to be hard, because she carelessly let her insurance lapse and can't afford a lawyer -- Samantha climbs the friendship ladder with another neighbor, pitching in on Matt's efforts to locate his runaway niece. Getting shoved through a glass table turns out to have been the last straw for Matt, who has an infuriatingly offscreen conversation with Peter about Dan; Peter then confronts Dan about it, and Dan reacts as though Peter has authority over him, for some reason? Peter also helps Michael meddle in Kimberly's private medical affairs after Kimberly lies to Michael that she's totally not dying at all. Once Michael knows the truth, he informs Kimberly that he's going to spending as much time with her as he possibly can; she pretends to go along, but then finds a pier. She loses the nerve to die by suicide then, but it's not her last attempt of the episode. At D&D, Amanda starts right in using Craig's disclosure to her own advantage, but may overplay her hand when she involves Arthur himself. You're not going to believe this but Jane was no better running this business than she was any of the others we've seen her in charge of, and Sydney's doing a lot of scrambling to get on top of the mess Jane left. The situation is so dire that it might really help if Sydney had another source of income, yet when Walter offers to pay her to hang out with Carter, she says no. Instead, she chases the money for the "Kirov" paintings from Kyle, reigniting Taylor's suspicions. When Sam's not occupied getting bossed around by Sydney, she's helping her apparent new best friend Alison determine that she definitely is pregnant, and encouraging her to bring Jake into the conversation. The holidays have come again to Melrose Place, but they're generally not going to be very happy. Peter agrees to Amanda's request that he visit a therapist, but then gets angry and jealous when her professional obligations prevent her from participating in his treatment. Kimberly tries to help the Michael/Megan relationship along by sharing her plan to bequeath Michael a big life insurance windfall, but Megan is understandably upset that Kimberly intends to do it by faking her own accidental death. Matt starts to push back against Dan's attempts to control him with his money. The end of Sam and Craig's relationship has her up in arms about his refusal to return her courtyard painting, so Billy volunteers to help her get it back -- just as Sydney admits that another piece of Sam's work is up for auction at a charity event, and that Kyle's actually been buying all the "Kirov" pieces at the restaurant but that Sam hasn't seen any money for them because Kyle's on a payment plan that hasn't kicked in yet. Jane impulsively invites Sherry to spend the holidays with her, and Sherry impulsively accepts even though she finds Jane's many questions about her own birth very painful to answer. And when the season brings up painful childhood memories for Alison of keeping up appearances amid her father's abuse, Jake actually comes up with a pretty good solution for making new traditions for their family. The problems Amanda is facing in this episode are hardly the worst Melrose Place has ever thrown at her, but there are LOTS of them, and they're coming at her from all sides. D&D is toxic in a whole new way, and her choices for second-in-command are apparently limited to Billy or Craig. Peter just seems to be goofing off instead of beating the bushes for new patients to replace the ones he lost while he was incarcerated -- and every time she catches him being especially lazy, one or more of the McBrides is around. Our queen does not deserve this! With the restaurant's opening upon us, Kyle is interested in acquiring some original art for the walls, and takes a liking to the piece Samantha created for the window at Jane's; Sydney nominates herself to be Samantha's agent, and to make herself more available to Kyle, too. The love pentagon grows ever more accursed, with Jane escalating her hostilities from brick throwing to tire slashing. Jake and Alison remain convinced that their own exes couldn't be stalking them, and their bickering about it only furthers Jane's nefarious plans. But if dating Billy really was something she intended to do, she fails on that front: Billy is only into Samantha. Michael is once again approached by that pretty blonde jogger, who slips him her address and orders him to come service her sexually. And Matt discovers that leaving rehab did not reset his whole life to where it was before he started using speed. No need to keep fiending: our podcast on "Jane's Addiction" is here!

Peter tells Amanda it doesn't matter what the cops think about Beth's demise, or what her diary said: he definitely did euthanize her. Amanda's not bothered, nor is Det. Wylie when she confronts him about knowing all along that Peter had been exonerated: he's feeling good about the case now that Kimberly is in the wind. For...about ten minutes, until Michael finds her walking down the street. Kimberly admits that she can't talk to the cops about the night of Bobby's death because she doesn't remember what she was doing. When Amanda's newest tenant, Taylor, is surprised by the arrival of her husband Kyle in the city, she has to start doing some fancy footwork to convince him that she really just came on a lark but that now she thinks they should leave the running of their Boston restaurant to the guy who's handling it now, and open a second location in Los Angeles. He agrees, and is not remotely suspicious about how quickly she finds them a great apartment in a complex with a pool! But Amanda is keeping an eye on Taylor and how overly familiar she is. Samantha is starting to worry about Jane's erratic behavior, and begs Sydney to help calm her down. But when Sydney brings Jane to the site of Richard's burial to prove that he's still in the hole they dug, a ransom demand left in the shallow grave puts them both on edge. Matt can't even question why Sydney's photocopying cash because he's only in Michael's office to steal his prescription pad and refill his DEXEDRINE supply. Alison and Jake are still having fun boning in secret, but she feels they could save a lot of hassle if she moved out of the complex, and everyone is taking it very seriously. Amanda doesn't want to believe that her brand-new husband Peter has been living under an assumed identity literally the whole time she's known him, but she also can't help finding Det. Wylie pretty credible. So she gets him to spill what he knows and follows the trail to Kansas City, to find out what went on there before he came into her life. Michael continues his vigil at Kimberly's bedside (Matt and his new ultra-quick speech patterns -- his speedy speech, you might say! -- aren't much help.) Everyone sure does hope Kimberly will wake up soon and confirm Peter's alibi, because the news of Peter's arrest is spreading far and wide -- why, it's even front-page news in Boston, where a Taylor McBride (Lisa Rinna!) gasps at the report and ditches her husband Kyle (Rob Estes!) to follow up. Jane and Sydney are trying very hard to plant a plausible cover story about Richard's disappearance and get back to their lives. But strange occurrences, from muddy footprints in Richard's hallway to a shove left outside Jane's door, leave them rattled (and are probably also unsettling to Samantha, who's moved in just in time to see her boss acting very squirrelly). Jane also has to try to get rid of Billy and his yammering about his great love affair with Alison; sadly, he remains oblivious to the chemistry surging between Jake and Alison, and the fact that she stood him up on his fancy violin restaurant date because she was too busy boning Jake. "Wait, you left someone out. Where's Jo?" Sorry, you're going to have to wait until literally more than 3/4 of the way through the episode to find out. You will not be able to live with yourself if you miss our podcast on "Living With Disaster"!

Obviously, Sydney knows her bargaining position is weak, but she really attempts many different arguments to convince Jane not to follow through on her whole Richard-killing plan. None of them works. A Hail Mary to get JAKE to talk to Jane and urge her not to make any "funky" decisions -- not that she specifies what those might be -- does bring Jake to the design studio just in time to see Jane trying to distract Richard from his (accurate) suspicions about her financial malfeasance by making out with him. So Jake's out on Jane -- and while you'd think that would just cause him to take Alison up on her advances, he's just too good a pal and doesn't want to betray Billy, who's trying even harder to woo Alison back than Alison is trying to seduce Jake. What a mess! Speaking of which: Willowbridge. Amanda and Michael are swiftly apprehended breaking in, but it's no big deal to Betsy, who simply locks both of them AND Peter in a boiler room and lets her staff know that all three of them are going to get lobotomies; see, Amanda and Michael aren't friends of Kimberly and Peter but rather escaped mental patients who've made it all the way to this...other mental hospital to...? Look, it's not a great cover story, which is why everyone from Nurse Benson to Dave start poking holes in it. But will Nurse Benson turn on Betsy in time to save everyone's brains?! Matt recovers from meningitis only to be rather easily convinced that in order to keep up with his studies, he's going to need to start taking prescription speed. And things are going pretty well for Jo and Dr. O'Malley until he has her over to his apartment for the very first time and abruptly announces that he thinks they should get married. Peter is down bad at Willowbridge, but not out: he decides to try to work his magic on the soft-hearted, lonely, apparently horny Nurse Benson (Priscilla Presley!), offering to "make [her] happy," wink, if she'll just help him leave the hospital -- even just for one night! Meanwhile, on the outside, Amanda and (to a much lesser extent) Michael make pretty decent amateur sleuths, as Amanda tracks Kimberly's ATM use to the vicinity of Willowbridge, and the two hit the road in search of their troublesome loved ones. But with Betsy in control of Peter's care and the hospital, will it all be in vain?! Jane happens into a clothing boutique that's about to close, and spontaneously decides she wants to take it over. But when she goes to Michael for some quick cash, trying to guilt him into giving it up, he tells her that actually her sister's the one she should be trying to avenge herself on financially -- you know, because of that whole thing where Sydney drugged and paralyzed her? (That was this season, btw, can you believe it?) Anyway, Sydney kind of tries to make things right, but just ends up walking in -- and straight back out -- on Jane cleaning her gun on the coffee table. Jake has apparently washed his hands of Jane after seeing her in Richard's company, so he's not paying attention to any of this; in fact, he's paying a lot more attention to Alison, putatively trying to help his pal Billy reunite with her, but...maybe not really? He's very pleased when Kimberly appears at his house out of the blue, but despite criticizing MICHAEL earlier for not noticing wild swings in Kimberly's personality, Peter does not interpret the headband and sister-wife dress as representing one of Kimberly's alters. Betsy pretends to agree to corroborate Peter's alibi to the cops, but then enacts her own scheme to get him out of her way. Will amateur sleuths Michael and Amanda crack the case in time? After Alison gets between Richard and Jake (or rather Jake's murderous rage), she manages to talk Jane into meeting with a friend of Alison's at the DA's office (?) about pressing charges against Richard -- and Jane does seem optimistic and energized in Alison's pal's office...until she warns Jane about how weak her case is, and how humiliating it will be for Jane to go through with it. Alison and Jake try to hector Jane into following all the "correct" steps for a sexual assault survivor, but Jane has other ideas. And when Dr. O'Malley isn't treating an obstreperous unhoused teen with a mysterious illness (though Matt is taking the brunt of the kid's sarcastic abuse), he's making things awkward with Jo by spouting off about irresponsible parents who give birth to children they then don't raise themselves. It's not only that Billy continues to be the absolute worst -- which he absolutely does. It's that Amanda keeps coming right up to the edge of shutting him down and then doesn't, because even though he's a pig, he's a pig who's bringing work to the agency. This time, his risky gambit is to take a vodka client he and Alison are pitching to get a true "American" experience at a strip club with mud wrestling, and then try to close the client by letting the guy mud-wrestle Alison. And when he steps to Amanda's own marquee client? ...Well, maybe we can forgive her for not reprimanding him since she's got other things on her mind, which we'll get to. The plans for Alan and Val's wedding cause tension between Alan and Matt, which only rises when Alan's doting parents show up, so relieved that the boy they'd been worrying about is not actually Funny or That Way that they're throwing themselves into the wedding festivities with near-evangelical fervor. Matt's attempt to seek comfort from David, apparently his only friend, only complicates matters. Things have been going so well for Kimberly lately that it's time for her to start experiencing a new mental health issue. When Amanda accepts Alycia's framing of Bobby's legal difficulties, Bobby takes his disappointment out on Amanda's door frame. And Richard reaches rock bottom, but maybe Jane shouldn't gloat too much about how he got there. We bring no mercy to our podcast on "Ruthless People"!

As we probably all assumed after the last episode, Brooke is not coming back from her fall into the pool. Billy does his best not to let his estranged wife's sudden passing affect his life at all -- with a funeral to plan two days after her death, why wouldn't he still go to work and continue trying to get Alison to sleep with him? -- but it's not up to him: Brooke's restless ghost simply will not leave him alone. Michael, having determined that Kimberly is the right woman for him, won't take any of her many "no"s for an answer, and keeps pressing for them to resume a real relationship and not just keep having sex. Meanwhile, one of Michael's other ex-wives, Jane, turns up the heat with Jake while also soliciting Alison's advice on a pitch to a buyer. Jane then gets so smug about her success that Richard feels obliged to interfere with her deal. Matt is anxious about Alan's new love interest Val (Jeri Ryan!), particularly since Alan's producer has told Matt in so many words to quit being so gay around Alan in public. And Amanda, Bobby, Alycia, and Peter still aren't sure how much their entanglements with one another are about romance or friendship and how much is pure gamesmanship. It's pretty wild how Sydney's choice to abandon a partially paralyzed woman on the beach and leave her at the mercy of the tides has really sent everyone in their orbit into a tizz! Sydney herself is worried that people think she purposely tried to kill Jane and desperately doing damage control. Michael, still not convinced by any of Sydney's stories, contrives a scheme to force Kimberly to tell him the truth about the incident. And Jake is just as attracted to the partially incapacitated Jane as Michael was. But fortunately, Jane is determined never to be as helpless as she was on that beach: she doubles her PT sessions, and even pitches in at the studio to help Richard and his designs land a deal with a distributor! Now that she's on top of the world, what's left for Jane but to start making terrible decisions?! Bobby's father Vincent gets sick of waiting for Bobby to avenge Jack's death and orders Bobby back to Miami. Not only doesn't Bobby comply, but he pre-emptively hustles Amanda out of town in case Vincent hires anyone else to do the job. At the same time, Peter is still working Alycia for information on Bobby's business...or just for the usual sexy reasons. Brooke begs Alison for help getting Billy to talk to her, trading on their temporary step-relationship. And seeing Alan at work is the first time it's ever occurred to Matt that Alan might be closeted for the sake of his career. It's about to be New Year's Eve, but not everyone's in a celebratory mood -- like Peter, who's getting sued for malpractice by some patient we don't know. Bobby invites Amanda and Peter to his house in Palm Springs, and though it seems like it'll be awkward with just the three of them there, Amanda rooks Alison into going, too. It's not like Alison has much going on back home: she starts out icing Billy out, some more. But then after Hayley's lawyer Norman tells Brooke that she won't inherit anything unless she has a baby, Brooke has to do some fancy footwork: first, tell Billy (outside the hospital) that she just found out she lost the baby; then tell him she wants to get pregnant again RIGHT AWAY. Billy thinks this plan is kind of creepy, though at least agreeing that Brooke is acting very weird rekindles Billy and Alison's friendship. Then Billy happens to run into Brooke's OB/GYN at the hospital and...well, things don't go well for Brooke from there. It turns out that the medical issue Jane suffered after Sydney drugged her in the last episode was a stroke -- a mild one, but she's still partially paralyzed, and after Michael sees the tox report, he forms a theory as to what happened. Fortunately for Sydney, she has Kimberly to help counsel her on covering her tracks. Matt is also still here, and still dating Alan, but since this is a Matt storyline, you know trouble is on the way. No need to pray on it: we've brought you a new podcast on "Holy Strokes"!

Jake is still not okay with Jess and Jo's burgeoning relationship, so much so that he kicks Jess out and fires him from Shooters -- and, when Jo tries importuning him on Jess's behalf, lets her know he's not interested in seeing or talking to her as long as she and Jess are an item. In retaliation, Jess hits up a local pool hall and picks a fight with some toughs, apparently to determine whether they're up for the job of messing with Little Brother (drink!). Brooke is such a good friend to Alison that she arranges for her to interview for a position at Brooke's daddy's company, which comes with a fat salary, and a surprise: it's at his international headquarters in Hong Kong! Billy is all set to talk Alison out of moving so far from her friends, until Brooke urges him not to get in the way of Alison's career progress. What will he do?! Sydney meets with Jim again and gets a surprise of her own: he's an FBI agent who infiltrated Vince's drug ring and is juuuuust about to make a bust. But he likes her, so he advises her to resign as president of Mancini Designs, effective...well, a while ago. And she can't tell Jane because he can only save one of them. Things are still going SO great for Matt and Paul that, yes, it's time for him to find out Paul is married to a lady. Matt is ready to leave Paul alone for good until Paul appeals to Matt's innate kindness and begs him to help Paul work through his feelings: Paul never slept with a man before Matt! He says! Finally, we find out what Kimberly's actually plotting against Michael: she's going to destroy his career, and use Amanda -- and, frankly, Amanda's reasonable suspicions about Michael's ethics, medical and otherwise -- to do it. Michael's having a perfectly pleasant evening at home waiting for his wife to hurry up and die already when Sydney unexpectedly shows up and foils his plan. He's so distracted pretending to try to revive Kimberly that he doesn't notice Sydney stealing the suicide note for future blackmail purposes! Once Kimberly is conscious again, Sydney tells her about the scene she walked up on, but Kimberly denies she was trying to die by suicide: she says Michael poisoned her, and that if Sydney will help her plant evidence to that effect and also destroy her note, she'll give Sydney half the insurance settlement. When the cops show up and don't find the suicide note in their search of the beach house, Michael figures out who probably has it. Whom will Sydney be loyal to! Oh yeah: in the midst of all this, Michael also proposes to Amanda. It doesn't go great. Speaking of Amanda: she gets Billy to ask Alison to give her a job at D&D, and it works! Amanda returns with a great attitude even in a position MUCH more junior than the one she formerly held, but also sets about undermining Alison with the help of her secret accomplice, Brooke. Of course, Amanda could probably just wait for Alison to screw things up on her own, as she is busily doing with Billy and...whatever their relationship is now. Jess's attempts to worm his way back into Jake's life (or possibly take it over) get a big boost when someone leaves their credit card at Shooters. Jess then gets to use it to be a big man paying for dinner out for him, Jake, and Jo, but Jake knows just enough about Jess's financial history to be suspicious about how Jess got a credit card. Will Jo's empathy for Jess draw her closer, and leave Jake on the outside of their relationship? Hear all about it in our podcast on "All About Brooke"!

Amanda having entrusted her treatment to Michael, the two of them head to New York so that they can doorstop the famous Dr. Steele and convince him to admit Amanda into his cancer study. But it's going to be hard once Kimberly calls Dr. Steele first and defames Michael, claiming his ultimate goal is to undermine Steele's study and get himself set up with one on the same treatment plan instead. And that's just the disaster Amanda knows about: she has no idea that, back in L.A., Alison and Billy are eating shit from a disgruntled client, who demands a brand-new campaign with one day's turnaround. After that pitch also fails to impress him, Alison tries one last gambit: a sob story, and not her own. Things are devolving quickly in Rawlings's police brutality case. Jo knows all too well what happens to civilians who try to challenge police power, and only gets more terrified about what could happen to her after Rawlings's victim dies. Matt volunteers to turn her photos over to the Internal Affairs detective and keep Jo out of it. How? That's what we would also like to know! After having spotted Jake and Jane getting cozy, Sydney tries to suss out what might actually be happening between them by volunteering as Jane's personal assistant. Instead, Jane asks Jake to give Sydney back her job at Shooters. Sydney is happy to accept when she thinks it means proximity to one another will lead to a reunion for her and Jake, but once he tells her it won't...everyone should probably start getting scared of her again. Though Amanda has apparently spent the entire time since we saw her last trying to ignore what Michael told her about the lump in her neck, he is refusing to let up, and another doctor at the hospital confirms his findings: Amanda does have Hodgkin's Disease. She resists Michael's forcible attempts to continue necessary testing, bitches out everyone who steps in her path at the office, but finally confides in Billy, swearing him to secrecy. Is this a confidence he can keep -- even from Alison, as Amanda expressly specifies? HMMM. Rikki gets Sydney out to the desert to a "retreat" with the rest of the Abbot followers, which apparently does not at all live up to the picture Rikki had painted of a resort-like experience. Sydney is sketched out when her assignment to perform the "tea service" exposes her to Martin, in bed with two ladies, and even more put off the next day when Martin orders his acolytes to write to their families asking for money. Sydney tells him she wants to leave, and he assures her she may...but is she, really? Matt tells John, the detective on his case, about Kimberly's involvement in the attack and her ongoing verbal threats against him -- though he also tells John that he doesn't want to escalate the situation, and, when John hits on him, that he's not looking for a relationship. John doesn't really hear any of that, apparently thinking the way to Matt's heart is through police harassment of his enemies. We take the gloves off in our podcast on "Boxing Sydney"!

You thought a standard Season 3 episode of Melrose Place crammed in a lot of drama? STRAP IN, because here comes a for-no-reason midseason double episode, and it is a doozy. Amanda and Peter are still pretending to be a couple while secretly plotting against each other. Peter and Caitlin's plan to pry Amanda out of her contract is to arrange for everyone at the agency to take a drug test for insurance purposes, and for Amanda to fail it because the "antibiotics" Peter's prescribed her are actually THC...and since the only drug study at the hospital involving THC is the one Peter's just put Michael in charge of, Peter's hands will be clean. But Amanda finds one pill, gets Matt to have it analyzed, and confronts Peter with the evidence in order to keep her job. So then Peter has to escalate by arranging to "catch" Amanda and Michael in his office after hours, injecting her with a drug that will imitate the appendicitis cramps, and wheeling her into surgery she will not survive. Will Michael have the stomach to go along with it?! Jake insists on accompanying Jo to the Carters' to get Austin back, even though she is completely unable to be cool and reveals herself to Mrs. Carter while she's supposed to be waiting for the cops to come charge the Carters with kidnapping. Mr. Carter then shoots Jo in the back, which kind of complicates the emergency custody hearing set to take place when Jo still has an arm in a sling and Mr. Carter is still out on bail. Billy gets increasingly bitter and suspicious about what's actually going on between Alison and Terry, until he finally confirms it by spying on her at an AA meeting and seeing them mildly PDA-ing. Little does he know how quickly Terry wants things to progress, even after he almost falls back off the wagon after a disastrous performance in his first game back after rehab. After Amanda informs Sydney she's raising her rent by kind of a lot, Jane tells her to find a roommate, and Rikki -- a fellow waitress -- seems perfect! She's full of opinions about all Sydney's neighbors, and also about ways Sydney could improve her life if she just started attending the same self-help meetings Rikki does with her "guru," Martin! And hey, if Sydney can't afford his courses, maybe she could just work it off in his offices! Take aim at our latest podcast on "They Shoot Mothers, Don't They?"!

Zack encourages Alison to worry less about what her friends are saying about her recent behavior -- and her drinking, in particular -- and think more about what she really wants. Like a new car! How's she going to pay for the convertible she ends up with? She'll figure it out! Should she go with him to Santa Barbara when she has an early meeting the next day and the last time she did that she slept through her obligation? She sure shouldn't! Does she do it anyway? You bet! Does she end up in exactly the same predicament? Oh boy, does she ever. Since she's starting to get so sloppy that she's letting down her colleagues, she pretty much forces them to call her on it, but she is not ready to hear their fearless feedback at all. A shadowy underworld figure shows up at Shooters and starts threatening Jake with physical harm if he doesn't start paying into his protection racket. Jake refuses, but Sydney -- who knows these people don't screw around from her time with Lauren -- is more receptive to direct appeals with regard to ways she could "pay" Jake's protection money in trade. You know how. Oof. As Kimberly keeps getting more bad news about the difficulties she's going to have in starting a family, she keeps running into Jo at the doctor's office, and gets the story of Jo's legal setback. If she can't help herself, maybe she can help Jo? Matt's parents meet and are quite taken with Jeffrey -- so much that when Matt asks if he may bring him to Thanksgiving, they agree! There's just one problem: if they attend, Matt and Jeffrey may only represent themselves as good friends. Bruce is back on his feet, and back at the office against medical advice, but the news of someone buying up large blocks of troubled D&D stock are not doing his health any favors. Sydney is still trying to tell Jane what's been going on between her and Chris and Jane is still steadfastly refusing to hear her. When Jake stops by the studio delivering papers from Amanda and Chris, assuming Jake is a courier, just casually tries to involve him in objectifying Sydney, Jake pushes back. He then reports this to Jo, apparently counting on her to pass it on to Jane, which Jo does...but Jane still doesn't believe it and just takes it back to Chris to spin for her, which he can easily do now that he's had a day and a half to firm up his story. Jane then goes to yell at Jake before kicking Sydney out of her apartment and firing her from the studio. Chris also used his time to get out ahead of his Jake blunder with Sydney's probation officer, who threatens to send Sydney back to the mental institution now that she's unemployed and homeless, which is why it's very handy that Jake has just used the reward money the FBI conveniently gave him for his part in apprehending Brittany to buy Shooters: he can give Sydney a job! After seeing Michael and Kimberly at the agency, Bruce makes Amanda hire them, over her personal objections, for a "real people" coffee ad. Kimberly correctly predicts that Peter's not going to let them do it because it violates hospital rules, but all it takes is a visit from Amanda and her hot legs in her short skirt to convince him to do whatever she wants in order to keep her in his life. Alison's college roommate Susan is passing through town on her way to her new job as a chef in Santa Barbara, intriguing Billy in the process. But when the job falls through, Alison invites Susan to move into her spare bedroom while Susan figures out her next move. This won't be a problem at all! Sydney tries to play hardball but can't think of anything Michael could give her. Chris can: Michael could give her his share of Jane's business, which Sydney could then sell back to Jane. Sydney seems ambivalent of giving Jane a win, and resists Jane's calls not to negotiate with Michael without a lawyer present, but for the second time in two episodes, people trying to represent themselves really do have fools for clients! After receiving a mysterious videotape from Palmer indicating that he went out on the Pretty Lady with Jake, Amanda finds out that the vessel blew up, and that it's presumed that there are no survivors. (Dealing with Alison and Billy's petty crap -- now revolving around Billy's attraction to their new assistant, Elizabeth -- does not prove to be a welcome respite from her worries.) But were the cops at the marina right? Or should the Coast Guard probably keep searching...? We've got your prescription: it's our podcast on "Non-Sexual Healing"!

Amanda is none too pleased to have her fugitive dad couch-surfing with her, particularly given that she was once at risk of catching a charge when he went on the lam in the first place. (Brittany seems to be getting pretty sick of him too, for different reasons.) But when Palmer tells Amanda that he's come back to town to tie up the last few loose ends that might still leave her in extra-legal danger -- and then he's going to turn himself in -- she agrees to aid and abet him for just a couple of days. What could possibly go wrong? Jane, apparently convinced that Sydney's two days in a mental institution cured whatever had ailed her before, is being extremely kind to her now that she's out, but Sydney's not trying to hear her advice that she stay away from Michael for all their sakes. Jane turns out to be right about Michael, though not for the reason she thinks. She also turns out not to have gotten any better at choosing partners, though the only one who knows that so far is Sydney, on the receiving end of Chris's creepitude. At D&D, Amanda assigns Alison and Billy to the same bridal gown account so that they can both bring all their personal crap to the project and annoy everyone around them; though Alison also makes time to give Jo disastrously terrible advice about Reed's parents' custody case, which Jo, for some reason, follows. It's less good -- for Sydney, anyway -- that he doesn't really believe her protestations of innocence and is urging her to work with the DA to get her charges reduced. Then he lands on a whole different plan to keep her out of jail that she might like even less. Kimberly seems to have convinced Chambers, the new detective, that she's a completely credible doctor and Sydney is an unstable wacko who tried to use her for an alibi; she's also feeding Michael confusing stories about his past and letting Matt know she would prefer it if he didn't try to stop by and see Michael when she's not there. Alison apparently did convince Meredith -- in another one of those fraught emotional conversations that inconveniently happened offscreen -- to join her in pursuing legal action, which both are doing in Wisconsin despite Meredith's extreme nerves and Mrs. Parker's attempts to interfere. Back in Los Angeles, Amanda convinces Billy to help her with a pitch to get Escapade -- still, somehow, his employer -- to hire D&D as its new ad agency. Does Billy understand the unethical breaches Amanda has led him to commit? Unclear! Brittany is still on Jake's boat, and still horny as hell. But there actually is a reason for both those things. Little does he know that Meredith has a gun! And Billy is also there, suddenly, to help, kind of! In the aftermath, Alison wants to talk about pressing charges against Mr. Parker, but Meredith just wants to cut ties, again, and put this unpleasantness behind them. Once they're back in L.A., Billy eventually tells Alison he thinks Meredith is right. But does Alison? Kimberly rushes to Michael's bedside straight from having spent several hours all alone at the USC library, just in time for him to go in for emergency surgery on his cerebral swelling! Sydney gets home to find the complex swarming with cops and realizes Kimberly has followed through on one of her many murder plots -- and that this one implicated Jane! But when she goes to talk to Jane in jail, she finds out Jane suspects Sydney did it! ...Which she might have, if Kimberly hadn't realized Sydney was too skittish and proceeded without her. Anyway, Sydney doesn't have an alibi, Michael doesn't have any memory of his life before waking up after surgery, and Jane doesn't have any reason NOT to throw suspicion on Sydney. Jake pulls an "I choose me" on Amanda and Jo, swearing off relationships, only to get entangled IMMEDIATELY with Brittany (Kathy Ireland!) (?), a woman fleeing a rich, powerful, abusive husband with lots of sketchy connections. After a minimal amount of lurking about just far enough away to make Michael doubt what he's actually seeing, Kimberly enters the beach house and gets close enough to let Michael touch her and know that, yes, she's really there, and really alive; her mother just lied to him to try to get him out of Kimberly's life, but now Kimberly's all better and ready to pick back up like the past five months never happened! When Michael sheepishly confesses that, during that time, he married Sydney (though not specifically why), she orders him to get out of it, and since Kimberly's return means Sydney's blackmail material is worthless, it's pretty easy! Michael gloats about how great it is to put one over on their enemies, and maybe Kimberly would join him if she wasn't still having so many terrible headaches.... Jo's happy to be working with an adorable young model named Sarah, until Amanda shows up at the shoot and fires her on the spot. D&D NEVER works with ANYone from Sarah's agency! Only after the head of the agency calls Bruce to chew him out and demand an apology from Amanda to we find out what her problem is with Models Inc.: said agency head is Hillary Michaels, the mother who left Amanda and her father when Amanda was a child. Now that they've reconnected, Hillary desperately wants to try to have a relationship with Amanda again; Amanda's not so sure. Since Alison's parents won't be around until right before the wedding, they want to help by paying for a local wedding planner. Too bad Sheila is bossy and abrasive -- and not in the way where we'd enjoy seeing Billy (or "William," as she insists on calling him) and Alison victimized by her. Jane is pretty much screwed, financially -- so much so that she tries going to Amanda for a loan. Amanda doesn't even pretend to consider it, instead offering to introduce Jane to someone who might be willing to park his money in her company. Then she goes to Michael: if he puts his half of the inheritance into Jane's company, they'll both save on legal fees, he'll probably make money when she's a big success (snort), and while a court case would drive them apart, being in business will inevitably pull them closer together. Jane is horrified to be ambushed by the sight of Michael at lunch with her investor, but has to admit that Amanda's scheme makes sense. Sydney, however, is jealous as hell that Michael's once again entangled with Jane and her talent, so Lauren's arrest for pandering comes along at just the right time: Sydney visits her in jail to arrange to take over her business while Lauren's locked up, and prove to Michael that she has talents of her own. Alison first admits to Billy that she never wants to have children, and then confides that she's been having nightmares so upsetting that she wants to seek psychiatric help. Billy is, unsurprisingly, dubious about it, so she goes behind his back and immediately starts experiencing transference with her therapist. Now that Jake has a job and can't be Amanda's on-call fix-it man anymore, he recommends that she hire one, and in a wildly out-of-character move, she hires some dude who's an hour late for their interview and shows up without a résumé? Guess what? He's a creep. Lay your head down on your pillow -- preferably next to someone you like -- and listen to our podcast on "In Bed With The Enemy"!

Billy is hurt when he finds out that Alison is planning to go back to Wisconsin for her father's 50th birthday party without him, and even more hurt when he hears that no one's going to wonder where her fiancé is at this major life event because no one back home actually knows she's engaged. He then buys his own plane ticket behind her back, invites himself along, and ignores her twice-stated wishes that he not upstage her father on his special day by announcing their engagement and does precisely that, mostly in order not to get cucked by an ex that her oblivious parents keep inviting around because as far as they know Billy is just Alison's roommate. The longer Alison spends in her childhood home, though, the less bothered she is by Billy's heedless cloddishness, and the more haunted she seems to be by dark memories. On her latest D&D shoot, Jo meets a model, Gregory, who hits on her hard, RIGHT up until he finds out why she's sticking to club soda on their date. After ending up in jail following her arrest on Reed's boat (or was it?), Jo's next challenge is convincing her public defender that she killed Reed in self-defense and had no involvement in his drug business. He (a) doesn't believe her, and (b) is apparently in some degree of cahoots with the DA to get a threatened first-degree murder charge pled down so that Jo's case will just get off his schedule and he can move on to inadequately defending his other clients. Jo uses her one phone call to reach Jake, who rallies the neighbours to her aid, but what she really needs is a decent lawyer; the only one who could find or afford such a person is Amanda, and she's in deep CYA mode given her own entanglement with Reed. Is Jo going to serve hard time?! After sleeping on it and then going to work for half a day, Alison has given Billy's marriage proposal enough thought to accept. Billy tells Amanda that in order for there not to be any secrets between him and his intended, he's going to tell her about hooking up with Amanda. Horrified, Amanda orders him not to, and then gets in front of it by telling Jake before Billy has the chance to say anything. The fallout is...unexpected? Sydney continues burrowing into Michael's life: telling Jane about moving in with him; acquiring and donning a series of extremely Republican outfits; interceding on his behalf at work; and charging a bunch of furniture on his purloined credit card. Reed understands why Jo is frustrated, having been stuck in the hold of his stupid boat for the better part of a day without food, water, much air, or a toilet. But she's just going to have to stay down there until his drug business is concluded -- and honestly it's her own fault for having looked into said business in the first place. Once he's sprung her, he goes to work convincing her that she'll be happier on the run with him than back in her dull, safe L.A. life, and maybe saved a little of his supply for his own use because she manages to get out of his eyeline a couple of times. Will Reed convince Jo to sign on for (yo ho, yo ho) a pirate's life? Alison, having figured out she was wildly overreacted to the scene at Billy's, remained in New York to talk it out with him. Agreeing that long-distance relationships suck and getting him to bone her apparently convince him that she wants him to surprise her by arranging for all her stuff to be moved to his place in New York. This proves to be an egregious miscalculation, and not his last for the episode. Sydney continues pressing her advantage with Michael, letting him know she's collected actual eyewitness evidence of his drinking on the night of the car accident and trolling him at work by sneaking into the lounge to put newspaper clippings about drunk driving accidents on the cork board. Her needling culminates in her showing up at the beach house with several suitcases and announcing that she's moving in. Michael responds with some threats and rough sex, but guess what? That's probably what she would have done to him if he hadn't started it, so it doesn't exactly scare her off. Let us sweep you away with our latest podcast, all about "Swept Away"!

Remember how Amanda thought Reed was a creep and Jake thought he was a con artist? Apparently they don't, because Jake has no problem fixing the engine of a boat Reed totally does not own, for free, as a favour to Jo, and considering coming in with him 60/40 in a partnership, as his full-time mechanic. To get Jake hooked on the seafaring life, Reed invites him and Amanda out on a harbor cruise, which apparently sparks all of Amanda's happy memories of boating in her youth; no sooner has Jo volunteered to stake Reed the collateral he needs to buy the boat than Amanda is slagging her off and throwing her money at Reed. Between her misgivings about getting into business with Amanda and her suspicions about what might be in a suitcase full of valuables Reed has asked her to store, Jo has a lot on her mind! Michael is living at the beach house again, but all his focus -- such as it is; he's taking a lot of painkillers, so his vision's probably pretty blurry -- is on convincing Jane to take him back. Sydney joins Jane in securing a restraining order against him, but it's only so that it's easier for Sydney to try to worm her way back into his affections if he legally has no other options. Michael, of course, is only interested in using her, and in the short term, she's a handy go-between for a fraudulent new painkiller prescription when he can't get a legitimate refill for himself. Billy finally breaks the news of his promotion to Alison, and is much less confident than she is that a long-distance relationship can work for them. And while Jeffrey makes it clear to Matt that he doesn't tend to date anyone long enough for it to impinge on his career, Matt starts to realize he may not be happy getting into Jeffrey's closet with him. Things are going so well at Jane's -- and at the hospital, where Michael has returned to work -- that when Sydney shows up to ask him to support her at her upcoming court date, he laughs her off. Michael apparently still hasn't learned that he underestimates Sydney at his peril, because she goes straight to Jane, tells her pretty much the whole story about her work for Lauren, and tearfully confesses that Michael hired her to arrange for one of her ex-colleagues to seduce Robert. The sisters are reunited, and Michael is out on the street! ...Well, back in the beach house, with his pills. On his way out of Jo's to move into the boat, Reed learns that Amanda is rich, and immediately hits her up as a possible investor for the charter business he wants to start if he can just buy the boat he's been hired to work on! Amanda seems like she may actually be receptive to his pitch until he gets into her personal space, but she still lets him take her out for a little ride, which is when Jo shows up and sees them setting off. She orders Amanda to stay away from her man, which Amanda is perfectly happy to do. But Jake is suddenly very interested in what Reed is all about. An emergency fumigation of Celia's apartment building leads to her crashing at Alison and Billy's, annoying the former when she has to wait for the bathroom, while the latter finds that keeping close quarters with Celia unlocks their creativity as a writing team. And a chance encounter at an al fresco dining spot introduces Matt to a cute guy with a secret. No, it's not that he's gay. He is, but there's also ANOTHER secret! Also! As teased in the previous episode, Michael has given Sydney cash to arrange for one of Lauren's ladies to go to San Diego and videotape herself seducing her. Sydney's not so sure that Robert -- who's really in love with Jane! -- will be such an easy mark, but then she also sends a young Famke Janssen to play the role of horny married business traveler looking for no-strings-attached fun, so...Sydney. Come on. Jane's viewing of the tape has the expected result: she throws Robert out just hours ahead of the deadline she and Robert had both agreed she'd be turfing Michael. He just may have overplayed his hand with one of the other women he's scorned. When Alison goes over Amanda's head to get the MICROCOMP account back, we meet Amanda's boss, Bruce Teller (Stanley Kamel, the future Tony Marchette on Beverly Hills, 90210). He kindly recommends that Amanda take a couple of personal days to process everything that's going on with her dad, during which time Alison less kindly snakes one of the accounts Amanda's been neglecting. Amanda apparently touches down in Hawaii only to get right back on a return flight (at least poor Jake got to experience ten hours' worth of First Class?) to save her job, warning Billy that if he doesn't control his woman, Amanda's going to use every weapon she has against Alison, including the fact of Billy and Amanda's fornication while Billy and Alison were on a break. Reed crashes on Jo's couch while apartment-hunting in L.A., creeps her out by (a) snooping around her place while she's not there and (b) pulling her gun on her as a joke when he finds it. Though Palmer has been offscreen since his arrest -- working on his defense, presumably! -- Amanda has continued to attack the person she thinks is to blame for it, and is now trying to evict Jake on the grounds of "spite," which they both know is flagrantly illegal. Thinking she can exploit Jo's anger over the end of her relationship with Jake (despite the fact that, you know, he started dating Amanda herself seconds later), she tries to get Jo to write a letter attesting to the damage Jake did to Jo's apartment in support of his eviction; Jo refuses, though that doesn't stop Amanda from just telling Jake she did to try to squeeze him. Eventually, the feds freeze the funds Palmer paid Jake, permitting Amanda to proceed on the basis of his having bounced a rent cheque to her, but she doesn't get far before Palmer asks her for a meeting to make a very difficult admission. (Oh, and in the midst of all this, she agrees to Billy's request that she not tell Alison they slept together, but then turns around and screws over Alison a different way, removing her from the MICROCOMP account for sleeping with Steve.) Sydney manages to stay out of sex work for exactly as long as it takes for someone to offer her another gig. Too bad she didn't stay with Lauren long enough to take a seminar on how to tell when a john is actually an undercover vice cop getting ready to entrap you! The only person she can think to ask to bail her out is Michael, who arrives at a typically Mancinian way for her to repay his favour. Alison talks Jo into attending her ten-year high-school reunion, against her better judgment; it turns out to be exactly the hellish affair Jo expected, except for her reconnection with her old flame Reed Carter. When she learns that he's freshly freed from incarceration on a false drug charge, she decides it's for the best that he lives in the Bay Area and their paths are unlikely to cross again for another ten years...or are they?! It's Christmas! But for a lot of people, that can be awkward! Like, for instance, for Matt, who has decided to cook a traditional Christmas dinner for the orphans at the complex instead of spending the holidays with his parents, since he's still hurt about the way they responded when he told them about losing his job for being gay. It's also not great for Michael, who feels extra-guilty about failing to save the life of a little boy accidentally shot at a playground because it happened on Christmas Eve, and now the boy's mother will spend every holiday mourning her son. Jane's not around to comfort him (she's at her parents' in Chicago, where...apparently they don't have phones?), so Michael has to get his emotional needs met by the next nearest woman: good old Dr. Kimberly Shaw, his colleague and completely platonic friend. Jake wants to blow out his Christmas celebration to make up for all the ones his mother was too poor or drunk to give him when he was a child, but Jo lacks festive spirit. Will her bitterness about her former in-laws' boozy Christmases spoil Jake's holiday? Alison has her surgery and returns home to be nursed by Billy. However, even though they are one another's BEST FRIENDS (ya heard?), he's not sure whether it's weird for him to get her a necklace for Christmas and she's not sure whether it's okay for her to need him so much when their relationship is, still, officially only platonic. Rhonda gets an invitation to spend Christmas in Aspen with Terrence, so if you were hoping to see her in more than two and a half scenes, Santa did not come through for you. After Dylan's declaration of love (or codependence, or obsession, or whatever) in the last episode, Kelly is trying to pretend nothing is wrong even as he openly gives her the silent treatment. To prove she doesn't take it seriously, she even tells Matt about it, which somehow isn't much comfort to him. They're on their way to yet another wedding-related appointment when she hears a news report on the radio about a surfer getting killed at Point Dume -- the very beach where Donna had told her Dylan was going to surf that day! Kelly desperately tries to determine whether the surfer is Dylan, and the utterly whipped Matt drives her all over the county to yell at various functionaries until Dylan himself calls; he decided to ride the rails (yes, like a hobo) to Salinas instead. Thinking Dylan was dead brings Kelly's feelings for him into focus, and it seems like she may have actually made a decision when Matt comes home to tell her something so shocking that anything she may have to say will have to wait. Speaking of reunions: David and Donna. Their shmoopiness is witnessed by a pissy Noah, but his pouting is nothing compared to Camille's reaction when she comes back to town. David has to deal with Camille's emotional outbursts, in the process convincing Donna that he doesn't actually want to date her, and sees her as more of a sister now. Steve and Janet are still trying out what their life will be like if they accept Charles's offer to buy the Beat (which, given all the personnel he's installed in the office, doesn't seem like it's a trial for anyone other than Janet and Steve). But then Steve decides he doesn't want to sell...and Janet says she wants to take Charles's offer to edit a new magazine he's starting. Impasse! Kelly is disgusted that he's trying this gambit again, and refuses to accept them, but that's not enough for Matt: even though he totally did not get the job (because, duh, of course he didn't, he almost got permanently disbarred THIS SEASON), he still thinks they should move away -- and if Kelly doesn't agree to do it, he's going to assume it's because she's still in love with Dylan. An apparently successful publishing mogul improbably wants to buy the Beat, but if the deal goes through, it will mean Janet remains to run the publication for a year while Steve is relieved of...whatever his duties currently are. Will Janet like being the family's sole breadwinner while Steve becomes a full-time parent? Let's see how they feel after a trial run! Cue the "jokes" about aprons and castration! David and Donna are now fully single, and actually manage to tell each other that their recent romantic misfires have been due to their resurgent feelings for each other. But Donna, despite all the episodes of yearning we've had to endure, doesn't want to risk her friendship with David -- particularly not when she needs to lean on him because Felice wants to sell the Martin Manse. And Noah and Ellen continue pretty much just treading narrative water; introducing Noah to Ellen's mother and daughter doesn't really move anything anywhere. Donna is saving tons of money on sales tax by buying fabric and other materials online, but has she ever thought about opening her own website to sell her designs online?! She's hesitant about the financial outlay not just to promote the store with banners on search engines, but also to...actually manufacture and stock the items they'd be trying to sell. Camille brightly says that's why Donna shouldn't even consider spending her own money on any of this stuff, and instead should solicit seed money! It's a hard no from Donna, which is of course why Camille ignores her and goes straight to Dylan to pitch him on investing in the venture. Donna lets Dylan talk her into pitching her that night, and she does come around (not just to the idea of a website, but also to dating David's designer friend, Mitch). Meanwhile, David picks a fight with Camille about having gone behind Donna's back, but is that even what he's actually mad about? Speaking of mad, Kelly notices that Matt's been in a crabby mood ever since he got back from that dirt-biking trip with Dylan. When he claims he's just stressed about work, she wakes up Dylan in the middle of the night to ask him whether anything happened that she should know about. Dylan doesn't narc on Matt, but does tell Matt about the visit and Kelly's suspicions. Matt decides to come clean, but when Kelly has one too many questions about the first part of his confession -- that he drank acid-spiked punch -- he gets way too defensive and decides not to tell her the rest. Will he be able to stop wearing his guilt on his face and get on board with planning the wedding they should definitely still have? Elsewhere, Noah's attempts to "help" Ellen into a new sober life look a lot like trying to control her, and Steve and Janet's latest "comedy" plot revolves around a neighbor child's dead pet -- yes, really. Will either David OR Donna accept reality and stop this pantsing around (as it were)? Speaking of Donna's exes: Noah shocks us all not only by going to an AA meeting but remembering a lot of information about Ellen, one of his fellow Friends Of Bill W., keeping her from drinking at the club and distracting her from her lonely apartment by driving her to the beach. A meeting with accomplished businesswoman Donna (...okay) causes Ellen to break her sobriety in shame, but Noah is determined to help her get back on track. Kelly's new PR client is a sausage king with a lot of promotional ideas that end up implicating various members of the Sanders family in ways adorable and not. And when Dylan and Matt go on a dirt-biking getaway together (.......okay), Matt drinks a little too much of the "desert juice" he doesn't realize also contains LSD and returns home with dark secrets Dylan promises not to share. Billy has the bad luck to take a wrong turn in south central Los Angeles, get blocked in a dead end by a Cadillac full of toughs, and gets his cab beaten with baseball bats. He refuses to accept the cheery view of the situation as presented by the detective on his case, Alison, and all his neighbors, which is that he wasn't physically harmed; instead, he's focused on the part where the detective declines to give him false hope about the likelihood that the perps will be apprehended, and starts making sweeping racist statements about the neighbourhood where the incident occurred; challenged by Rhonda not to, you know, spew hate speech all over the courtyard, he refuses to back down and lies to Alison -- for the second time in two episodes -- to get her to lend him her car so that he and Jake can go vigilanting in hopes of bringing the cops a plate number. Since the episode is airing just a few months after the 1992 L.A. uprising, Rhonda is also moved to confront her own privilege as a black person insulated by a comfortable suburban upbringing, and decides to try to raise Billy's consciousness as well as her own. Also: it's Jake's birthday! But his place of honour is quickly usurped by the arrival of his blowsy mother Stella, trying to make up for all her failings in Jake's youth and also to crash on his couch for a while and maybe move to Los Angeles permanently. Sandy is drawn to Stella and tries to broker peace between mother and son. Speaking of parenthood: Jane's pregnancy is far enough along for her to enroll herself and Michael in a parenting class; Michael thinks it's bullshit and makes sure everyone knows. We discuss his boorishness -- and everyone else's -- in our podcast on "Burned"!

A visit from Matt's brother Patrick and sister-in-law Juliane couldn't come at a better time, what with both him and Kelly suddenly having so much time on their hands. But Matt's not exactly excited for their arrival, since Patrick's a big finance bro who's always been critical of Matt. Patrick might be easier to get along with now, though, since he needs to ask a big favour: he's sterile, and would like Matt to donate sperm so that Patrick and Juliane may have a baby. Do we even need to say Kelly is a bitch about it? Donna might not go so far as to say Kelly is being a bitch about backing out of the new lease on the store, but she's terrified about having to network on her own. Turns out she should be, since her instincts suck, and she ends up dating a nerdy buyer so that he'll order some of her new sweaters. David's having much better luck, connecting with a fashion journalist (improbably) profiling Donna. Meanwhile, Noah's still embroiled with Josie and her aggro brother Shane, who aren't any easier to get along with now that Josie's pretty sure that if she doesn't come up with the $90,000 she owes her dealer for flushed coke, he's going to kill her. Noah doesn't really take their concerns seriously, since he's also still embroiled with Steve and Janet's nanny Darby, and required to do the emotional labour of assuring Steve that even if Darby isn't constantly talking about her one-night-stand with Steve, he's definitely probably the best she ever had. Having lost out on her chance to be a gym spokesmodel thanks to the "mix-up" that ended with her getting arrested on drug charges, Gina needs a job, and Dylan has a connection: a hotel regular named Russell who's a big wig at the "Super Sports Channel." Before he'll consider her, though, Russell needs her to help whip his lazy son Michael into shape for his school's big dance, three days hence. Michael knows his dad disdains him, and confides in Gina that their relationship has been hard ever since his mother's death. Seeing in Russell shades of taskmaster Bobbie, Gina decides to be Michael's hero. We discuss it all in our podcast on "Fertile Ground"!

But whoops, Chrissy knows Matt is under suspension, and reminds him that she's on the bar association's ethics committee. Will Matt heed this warning, or is he guided by the same terrible judgment that got him suspended in the first place? Kelly is also in the middle of a career crisis -- the same one she's been in for months, not knowing if running a store is actually her passion, or if she just wants to hang around because she's not ready to start losing touch with her...friends from not just high school but also elementary school. You'd think Dylan would make this process easy by being a prick to her, but as we know, this just makes him more attractive to her. Gina is compelled to spend time with him since he and Noah and Noah's new party pals are going to cool club openings where Jennifer Lopez compliments her shoes (offscreen, OBVIOUSLY). But she has doubts about Noah's sexiest AND cokiest friend, Josie. When Noah manages to get out of bed before noon, he happens by the Peach Pit while Steve and Janet are orienting their new nanny, Darby, and immediately hits on her. Jackie and Mel's relationship seems to be over for realsies this time, and even though our main cast are all well into their twenties, almost all of them are affected. Matt is representing Jackie in the separation and custody proceedings, so he has Kelly in his ear trying to make sure Erin is shielded, as much as possible, from the fallout. Her general bad mood also has her bristling against her new roommate Noah and overreacting to his intrusions. Jackie also reveals that Gina was the one who told her about Mel's strip party attendance after he quit paying her hush money, which puts her on the outs with most members of the gang -- particularly David, who believes her denials until Mel confirms it. Dylan continues inserting himself into Andrew's career crisis, braying at community center co-director Patsy and trying to get Andrew reinstated by threatening to withdraw his financial support. Surprise! This makes things worse. Steve and Janet go on a STUFF-stuffed honeymoon, which (no surprise!) ends with her water breaking six weeks early. Because this is a TV show, her delivery turns dramatic, requiring an emergency c-section that results in a preemie who has to go on a respirator in the NICU. Then, because it's a double episode, we must continue following everyone's Thanksgiving plans. Donna buys a genealogy CD-Rom to make a family tree for Steve and Janet. Curious about her own origins, she stumbles upon her father's vital statistics and learns that...he is Gina's biological father. Gina herself is trying to navigate her breakup with Dylan and David's ongoing touchiness about feelings she may or may not still have for her ex. Said ex has thrown himself into the center's Thanksgiving celebration, and ropes Kelly into helping, to Matt's dismay. Will Steve and Janet's baby make it through the holiday? Since Now Wear This has been closed ever since that homicide Kelly inconsiderately committed in it, the time has come for a big, splashy grand reopening -- which, due to reasons we never learn, Donna and Kelly have not decided to peg to the launch of Donna's menswear line. But never mind: "the buyers" from "New York" are coming four days early, so Donna's going to have to sew like she's never sewn before. Meanwhile, Gina is still holding a grudge against Princess Kelly, messing with her and Matt by "forgetting" to pass on Kelly's messages. Matt makes them agree to be civil for his sake, but Kelly makes that difficult by not learning her lesson and leaving a message on Matt's office answering machine about her growing doubts that running Now Wear This is where her career passions really lie. Obviously, Gina hears this before Matt does, and just as obviously, she "innocently" relays the news of Kelly's itchy feet to Donna to mess with their personal and professional relationship. Donna and Kelly are so desperate for extra hands that they can't refuse Gina's help after Matt has drafted her to assist in the menswear launch, and so dumb they don't foresee any potential issues in leaving her alone with a whole box of fashion show invitations. When Gina keeps the most important one and sets it on fire, a very predictable series of calamities ensues, culminating in the worst disaster of all: the gang dudes walking Donna's runway in open-toed slides. Dylan makes good on his pledge to Lucy, applying to resume his studies at CU. Unfortunately, CU thinks he is bullshit, and Dylan finds admission isn't something he can charm, bully, or buy his way into. After avoiding Janet for several days, Steve's exposure to nature documentaries convinces him that he is willing to father his child. He then proceeds to freak out, then overcompensate, and generally make Janet long for the days when he wasn't letting her down in her presence. As the Beverly Beat's mandate strays further and further from journalism, it seems Steve has stumbled upon a lucrative revenue stream: The Love Fisher, a computer program that matches singles with ruthless efficiency. First Janet gets curious about how much better the Love Fisher is at picking dudes for her than she is at picking them for herself; then it's Steve's turn to find out what kind of lady the computer thinks he should be with. Will Janet decide she's settled for a good enough guy, and will Steve cling to her for dear life? Noah has apparently transitioned into defending his dead father's reputation on a full-time basis, and is still being very snitty about it to Matt. Then Matt produces a fat environmental impact report which, when Noah reads it (lol, sure he does), convinces him that his father was a big scumbag after all. Speaking of scumbags: Donna is growing ever less certain that shacking up with Noah is the right move, so it's probably just as well that he has the lawsuit to occupy his attention. In the wake of his breakup with Gina, Dylan decides to take off for Vegas with David, who is soon disgusted by Dylan's willingness not to have a one-night stand with Mary but to lie to her about how serious a relationship the two of them might potentially have. Mary then clings, which David encourages, leading to an awkward moment on Dylan's doorstep when both his brunettes show up at the same time. Gina's got her own problems, which begin with a lost filling and continue through Mel's correct diagnosis of her bulimia. Last time, Noah's inability to fill the club was pushing him toward financial ruination, but now everything's fine, and he and Dylan are working together amicably to promote an upcoming show by fictional artist Cole Younger with a raffle to win a date with him -- in his hotel room, creepily? Anyway, Dylan's first act as manager of the Peach Pit After Dark is to fix the raffle and award the date to Kelly, only to be outmaneuvered by Gina, who just poses as Kelly to claim it for herself. This causes a variety of issues: Kelly is pissed to have to give up her prize (which she knows is ill-gotten); Matt is pissed that she keeps talking to Dylan about it (and also that her attempts to change his image for an ambulance-chasing TV ad are secretly about her wanting to change him into her ex); Dylan is pissed that Gina spends the night in Cole's hotel room; and Gina is pissed that Dylan's uninvited trip to said hotel room ends in a physical assault. Are emotions running so high to ratchet up the tension for a record-breaking hate-fuck? Claudia and David ignore Matt's advice and pursue plans to commit immigration fraud, despite the fact that both of them seem extremely (and, unusually for these nitwits, appropriately) apprehensive about it. Donna's old West Beverly Big Sister Ashley reappears in her life as both start circling the school's production of Romeo & Juliet; Donna's volunteering to make the costumes, while Ashley is building a bad-touch case against beloved drama teacher Mr. Bigelow. Steve's decision to fire a psychic results in her making the (self-fulfilling) prophecy that he's about to go impotent. Dylan's junkie logic leads him to decide his roommate's order that he get his illegally purchased gun out of the home they share just means he can wait until dark, put it in his pants, drive it over to the Marchette manse, and threaten its occupant. Unfortunately, Tony doesn't live there anymore -- nor, spoiler, does he live anywhere -- and the freaked-out victims of his home invasion call his motorcycle license plate in to the cops, who quickly pick him up. Do they find his drugs on him? Of course they do. Kelly and Matt are already having tension around Kelly's very obvious ongoing lust for Dylan, and Gina's demand that Matt represent him doesn't help. Meanwhile, Gina's lust for Dylan makes her a likely mark for Dylan to manipulate her into sneaking him drugs. Dr. Steve's Art Of The Pick-Up students may not be able to get their shit together when it comes to hitting on women, but they are very organized with regard to the law: they all take Steve to small claims court to get their money back since...he offered a money back guarantee. Matt gets Steve on a TV judge show, where he proceeds to take his star witness -- successful pick-up artist David -- down with him. Donna and Noah, oppressed by all the other people who live in the Walsh house, decide the answer is to try to bone at Donna's parents' house when the Martins go out of town. So much STUFF ensues that when Donna becomes the victim of a druggy Dylan accident, it's almost a relief to see it end, even in possible tragedy. The approaching yuletide holidays haven't given Dylan any more concern for either her busy schedule as the co-proprietress of a retail clothing store, nor for her relationship with a dude who isn't him. So with that in mind, of course he has no compunction about getting her on a private plane and flying her to Mexico for huevos rancheros, authentic sombreros, and a Mayan fertility statue into which he can stuff an extremely tiny amount of heroin. Gina takes a break from her suspicions about Sonia -- now working off her debt to Donna at the store (when she's not using the space to bone a dude after hours) -- to be jealous of the attention Dylan's paying Kelly and hang around close enough to swoop in as soon as Kelly tells Dylan she's not interested in taking him back. Gina's so willing to take Kelly's sloppy seconds that she even agrees to take exactly the same trip to Mexico Dylan took Kelly on and receive the gift of exactly the same Mayan sculpture, filled with exactly the same smuggled contraband. It's just Gina's bad luck that the store gets robbed when she knocks off early to go fuck around in Cabo and drive Kelly back into Matt's arms. Through all this, Noah is using Gina as his TaskRabbit for Donna's surprise birthday party, because he is just as oblivious about Gina's feelings about her cousin as Donna herself is. And in the background of everyone's week is a dance marathon AIDS fundraiser at the club for which Steve accidentally makes an overly generous pledge. Does Steve then try to scam a charity? We kind of respected Sophie for having some skill as a con artist, but she really loses a lot of her prestige with her latest scheme: getting Steve to let her write for the Beat. Over Janet's objections (which: that'll teach her not to require that Brandon designate her editor when he's out of town/on his way out the show's door), Steve not only gives Sophie a column in which she can apparently write whatever she wants; he also thinks said column should be adorned by her head shot, and that its début should be announced on the cover? David has a hard time being excited for her because he thinks she's just using Steve to get ahead (in the world of shitty weekly newspapers?), but he gets over it to have an even harder time boning her on the Beat's brand-new almost-live webcam. Noah has a typically healthy response to his father's suicide: driving not only drunk but whilst drinking. It's lucky for him that Donna's just happened to meet an attorney who's sufficiently broke to take on Noah as a client, but Donna is still upset that Noah won't tell her all about his feelings. Abby probably wishes Val would take a page from Noah's book as Val confesses to her in stages: first, that Val actually killed her father and staged it as a suicide; and a day later that she totally fucked Carl the night before their wedding. Maybe she should have checked that there's no statute of limitations on murder, because Abby is going to turn Val in unless Val does it herself. Remember that lawyer of Noah's? Donna meets him when she and Kelly are impulsively checking out a retail space down the stairs from his office, because Kelly thinks she and Donna should open a clothing boutique together. Kelly doesn't have much of a chance to realize this is a terrible idea, though, because she gets distracted by the news that one of Matt's clients is Lenny, the domestic abuser from "The Elephant's Father." The premise of our latest A-plot seems to be that Kelly, Brandon, and Steve are having trouble getting through their current romantic woes because they just can't get any perspective on them. Never-before-seen characters to the rescue! At the clinic, Jeff -- and, for some reason, Kelly -- treat Ellen, a teenager who's gotten chlamydia whilst cheating on her boyfriend. Hearing Jeff lecture Ellen about how important trust is in the course of telling her why she needs to tell her boyfriend about her STI convinces Kelly that she should trust Jeff enough to tell him how Brandon broke her trust. (And honestly, if things progress between Jeff and Kelly at all, Val really deserves a thank-you muffin basket for pushing them together with all her self-interested meddling.) Steve's been bumming everyone out at the Beat office to such an extent that Brandon decides Steve should be the Beat's newest unqualified writer: he urges Steve to use his KEG connection to a guy named Harry to get to Harry's fiancée, Christy, who works for the Dodgers and could maybe hook Steve up to interview Mike Piazza. Little does Steve know he's bringing his heartbreak story into Christy's life just in time for her to be experiencing extreme cold feet. Can Steve and Brandon put Harry and Christy back together -- and maybe learn some lessons about their own recent relationship problems in the process? Elsewhere, David is still hanging out/blurring journalistic ethics lines with Jasper's Law; things get more complicated when the band's original keyboard player gets into a car accident driving drunk and decides to sue Noah for overserving him, forcing David to decide which of them he hates less, and what advantages he'll be giving up if he sides against the guy in the band that just bought his stupid song. Donna's latest stupid fashion project gets underway with a photo shoot starring a bratty child model and her overly indulgent momager, putting Donna in the position of being extremely holier-than-thou. Will this be the one time St. Donna doesn't triumph? You probably know the answer, but we're still getting into it in our latest Again With This podcast!

The show that not only can't get back the opening-credits cast members for very occasional cameos but can barely even remember the characters they played ever existed is, in its eighth season, reallyimposing on the viewer's patience by bringing back Dylan............'s sister Eric for the first time since Season 5. And she's gone through some changes! Like, she's changed into a completely different actor! Also she's a streetwalker now. (Did Noley "Original Erica" Thornton quit the biz? Did her parents refuse to let her play a sex worker? Did the show just fail to meet her quote? We don't know; if you do, please tell us.) After Brandon and Kelly have a chance encounter with her at her corner, they embark upon a mission to rescue her from the life, whether or not she's actually ready or willing to go along with their plans. David still can't work money: literally at the moment Donna's opening her bank statement and discovering that her boyfriend embezzled from her, said boyfriend is at dinner with a loan shark getting five more figures into scary, illegal debt. Still wounded about Val's having two-timed him, Noah yells at her, starts a bar fight, and drunkenly tells Brandon that, actually, he doesn't really need to work on boats for the money because he is loaded -- not rich, but wealthy. Will Brandon be able to keep this secret from Val the sudden gold-digger? Finally, just as Steve is figuring out his responsibilities as someone developing a paternal relationship with a kid, some broad from his past that we've never seen before shows up with some big news. Well, actually, at the moment it's still just small news. But it's growing into bigger news every day.
