I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Tracy Kedian, the Associate Dean for Admissions, at the UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, MA. Dr. Kedian sheds light on the unique aspects of UMass Chan's curriculum, known as VISTA. This innovative curriculum fosters curiosity, inquiry, and equity through group and problem-based learning, along with extensive use of medical simulation. One exciting feature of UMass Chan is its commitment to serving underserved populations. With a focus on health disparities and public and community health, the school offers two distinct tracks with its regional campuses - the Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health track, based at Baystate Health Systems in western MA and the LEAD@Lahey track, located in Burlington, MA, that concentrates on leadership skills and health systems science to prepare future medical leaders.
Dr. Kedian also provides valuable insights into the admissions process at UMass Chan. While the school predominantly admits students from Massachusetts, it remains an excellent resource for premeds from all backgrounds. Throughout this conversation, you'll discover a wealth of helpful advice for aspiring medical students, regardless of whether UMass Chan is your state school or not. Join us as we delve into the world of UMass Chan Medical School and med school admissions with Dr. Tracy Kedian, a dedicated family physician and an expert in medical school admissions.

Join me for an informative conversation with the Assistant Dean of Admissions, Dr. Dustin Fulton, from UTHSC. As one of two public allopathic medical schools in the State of Tennessee, it is a popular destination for many premed students. The College has a strong commitment to training physicians who plan to go into primary care practice. Throughout the 4-year curriculum, students are exposed to primary care options through preceptors and master clinicians in the first two years and during clerkships, electives and junior internships in the clinical phase of the curriculum. They also have an accelerated 3-year curriculum offers a conditional acceptance into a primary care residency program at UTHSC upon completion of the MD degree.

Dr. Lina Mehta, Associate Dean for Admissions at CWRU School of Medicine, joins me for a very important conversation to walk through the process of the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School tool. This is a very important part of the admissions process whereby accepted students have to indicate their decision as to where they intend to attend medical school.

Update letters, letters of interest, and letters of intent all have important meaning in the medical school application process but submitting the right letter at the right time can make a big difference in the admissions process. In this episode, I'm joined by Kate Fukawa-Connelly, an expert pre-health advisor from Princeton University, to share her advice surrounding this topic.

This is part 2 of the first two episodes for 2021 in which I want to start the year off with some inspiration and instruction for my listeners as many of you get ready to embark on the next application cycle. Dr. Kolberg has advised thousands of students and the advising team at Notre Dame have a robust program to prepare and support their students through the premed process. I heard from some of my listeners that they don’t have an advisor so I wanted to bring some of her knowledge and tips directly to you.

As medical schools begin to wind down the 2020-2021 interview season and application, we know that the next cycle is right around the corner. As these are the first two episodes of 2021, I wanted to begin the year with a two part series that is dedicated to inspiration and instruction for the next group of applicants that are preparing to apply this spring.
The conversation you’re going to hear today is about inspiration and a little bit of advice about virtual interviewing. My guest is Dr. Michael Anderson who has had a very interesting career - from high stakes care in the pediatric critical care unit to leading a large children’s hospital to advising leaders of our government. Dr. Anderson and I want to bring this conversation to pre-medical students so you can understand all the different career possibilities that medicine can bring you such as Clinician, Educator, Researcher, Advocate, Health System leader, among others.

She’s really candid and provides some helpful advice in addition to talking about all things Zucker. Additionally, we talk a little bit about the AAMC's new VITA interview when discussing their admissions process.
CORRECTION 8/4/2020: For the entering class of 2020, the Zucker School of Medicine had 95 MD students and 4 MD/PhD students. Not 99 MD students and 4 MD/PhD students as was stated in the intro.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson
In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life.
Emily's: The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and now a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, The Emperor of All Maladies is a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer.
Balaji's: Educated by Tara Westover
Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty and of the grief that comes with severing the closest of ties.
Podcast: Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell.

This site can help you identify the pre-health advisor on your campus (if you don't know who they are) or find a volunteer advisor if you do not have one at our school.
