New Orleans war against vice – like the Great War in Europe – appeared to be nearly at an end. The city was poised to become a normal, orderly, Christian place that the reformers wanted it to be. Until, that is, the appearance of a mysterious figure with an ax that would start a frenzy in New Orleans – over murder and, of all things, jazz music – that was like nothing the city had seen before or since.
