SUMMARY
Unseen Paul builds on our earlier episodes by sharing even more quotes, stories, and insights about young Paul McCartney, who deserves a nuanced and dynamic portrait in any Beatles biography.
We explore some of his more overlooked character traits: his quirks and gifts; his stressors and anxieties; his unusual interests and values. These features reveal him as a fascinatingly dualistic artist and person.

We use Tune In’s reporting of the early friction between Paul and Brian Epstein as a case study to illustrate how Tune In guides the reader to distrust and second-guess Paul whenever he comes into conflict with other major players in the Beatles’ story.

SYNOPSIS: In A Prolonged Jealousy, we tackle one of Tune In’s main talking points: that Paul McCartney is a fundamentally jealous person whose obsessive, one-sided jealousy of and over John Lennon was brought to a boil by the presence of Stuart Sutcliffe in the band.
Is Tune In’s unforgiving portrayal of Paul’s jealousy fair? Or is it over the top? We’ll discuss!

SYNOPSIS: Phoebe Lorde and Allison Bumsted talk with Kenneth Womack about “LIVING THE BEATLES LEGEND: the Mal Evans Story.”
We discuss several of the amazing topics raised in this wonderful book; Elvis, cowboys, Allen Klein being horrible, the tougher-to-write moments in the book, interpersonal relationships within the Beatles' circle, and of course the fascinating life of the incomparable Mal Evans.
SUMMARY: Leader Lennon examines Tune In's major thesis, that John Lennon was and is the leader and implicit owner of The Beatles forever.
We take a hard look at Tune In’s obvious affection for hierarchy and dominance and how this pervades its storytelling. We'll discuss the deficiencies of this framework, why it is a problem, and how it distorts the Beatles’ story.

We go pretty deep into what we know of John and Paul's boyhoods and how those experiences shaped their personalities and affected their adult behaviors,
Does Tune In do the same? For both? We’ll see!

SYNOPSIS: In Creative Whirlwind, we take a look at how Tune In reports and characterizes young Lennon and McCartney as budding artists.
We’ll show that Tune In significantly downplays and shortchanges (and sometimes even ignores) crucial aspects of McCartney's artistic development and identity. On the other hand, Lennon’s creative development is shown from all angles in loving detail and with unbridled admiration.
Our discussion will be divided into three major sections: Visual Arts, Literature and Musical Self-Expression.

SUMMARY
Welcome to STRANGE BEDFELLOWS, an AKOM series about Yoko Ono and Paul McCartney after John Lennon's death.
Episode Three covers the 1990s, a decade that sees some of the most significant highs and lows between Ono and McCartney. Goodwill abounds when Paul inducts John into the Rock Hall in 1994. Building on this positivity, Yoko earns Paul’s gratitude during the making of the Beatles Anthology.
But the peace is short-lived, and a set of seemingly minor squabbles escalate into their most vicious public arguments to date, setting the stage for a cold war as Yoko and Paul enter the new millenium.

When John’s attempts to lure Paul back to the fold prove unsuccessful, he orchestrates one final outrageous maneuver. But John’s actions are another miscalculation; Paul responds irately to John’s tactics and further digs in his heels with a combative questionnaire inserted into press copies of his McCartney LP.
Early April shows an escalation in the acrimony between Lennon and McCartney, and by the end of Episode 4, the floodgates are open and the Breakup of the Beatles irreversibly begins.

SUMMARY
After the new year, John approaches the Beatles with a new outlook and a new idea for the future. The trial separation, John predicts, “will either be a death or a Rebirth.” And John has made his choice!
Episode Three delves into John’s hopes and fears for the fate of Lennon/McCartney in 1970, and then ties in some pertinent quotes from 1980 which show how he processed and framed the breakup in later years and the philosophical outlook he ultimately achieved.
And of course we continue the unfolding drama of the standoff between the estranged partners in Phase Two of the Trial Separation.

Episode two of our series provides a comprehensive examination of Paul’s state of mind in autumn of 1969. We discuss the deluge of problems he faces and consider how this confluence of issues triggers one of the worst episodes of Paul’s life. How might this depression have impacted Paul’s ability to interpret and respond to John’s continuing attempts to communicate through the media?
We dissect four key interviews (and a surprisingly overt personal gesture) from John, identifying and tracking the gradual evolution of his outreach to Paul as the communication gap between the two men grows ever wider and deeper.

SUMMARY
“I always felt the split was a mistake in many ways.” -John Lennon, 1976.
In this series, Phoebe and Daphne will argue that the breakup of the Beatles was an accident, the result of insecurity, hurt feelings and misread signals. Backed by rigorous research, we’ll analyze the events between September 1969 and April 1970 with probity, thoughtfulness and empathy.
–
Episode One will examine the divorce meeting that triggers the six-month-long standoff between John & Paul. We'll discuss Paul’s reactions, both in the moment and over the following week. We’ll also dissect some striking statements from John in a revealing interview he gives just days after the divorce meeting.

Peter Jackson's long-awaited documentary series Get Back launches on Disney Plus in just 3 days (November 25, 2021)! Join Phoebe, Daphne, and Thalia for a deeply analytical, level-headed, and definitely not hysterical countdown to this groundbreaking event in Beatledom! They discuss the Get Back book, teasers, remixes, and other advance media. Also discussed are such hard-hitting questions as “What are George’s opinions on cat food?” and “WTF is it about McBeardy, anyway?”
CW: Even more swearing than usual; gratuitous d*ck jokes.
‘Pizza and Fairytales’ is John Lennon’s phrase— a brilliant one—and he conjured it to describe one man: Paul McCartney.
John in the 70s is fairly well documented. But what about the less communicative, less examined half of Lennon/McCartney? In this episode, Phoebe and Daphne give McCartney two things he doesn’t often get: detailed lyrical analysis and recognition of his atypical self-expression. Extending this basic respect serves to shine a brighter, warmer light on the Lennon/McCartney relationship—not just in the 70s but up to present day and beyond.
Lennon and McCartney will be joined forever; they deserve to have their true story told.

1975 and 76 represent a pivotal moment for John Lennon, and his choices at this juncture determine his fate in his final years. Episode Three is a deep exploration of John’s ongoing inner conflicts: his lasting trauma over the Beatles breakup; his susceptibility to Yoko’s continuing mind games; his predilection for jealousy and insecurity.
All this, plus the long shadow cast by the nightmarish Primal Scream Therapy John underwent at the hands of Arthur Janov. It’s a topic which usually slides under the radar of Beatles discourse—until now. AKOM’s hard, probing look at Janov reveals his therapy’s catastrophic effects on John’s psyche and on the Lennon-McCartney relationship.
Ultimately, John chooses not to revive his partnership with Paul McCartney in New Orleans. How does this alter the course of their renewed relationship? And how does John's eventual descent into depression, paranoia and superstition alter both his feelings for and perception of Paul?

In this episode, we discuss John and Brian’s trip to Barcelona and the violent incident at Paul's 21st Birthday. We use this as a springboard for broader topics, including how John tends to be unfairly singled out as the only Beatle with a problematic history, the failure to look critically at Brian Epstein's behavior as it pertains to the band, how homophobia curtails discussion of the fallout from the Barcelona trip, and the absence of McCartney’s perspective in the reporting of this incident.
Phoebe and Thalia explore these issues, followed by a panel discussion with newest AKOM host, Iris.

In this episode, Diana and Thalia have a conversation with Chris O’Dell, the author of the book Miss O’Dell: My Hard Days And Long Nights With The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton And The Women They Loved. Chris O'Dell has led an extraordinary life as a close friend of the Beatles, Pattie Boyd and Maureen Starkey.
She was an early Apple employee, worked for Peter Asher and was among the world’s first female tour managers. She worked on many legendary tours, including the iconic 70's tours of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. She was the subject of George Harrison’s song "Miss O’Dell" as well as Leon Russell’s songs "Pisces Apple Lady" and "Hummingbird."
We dig into hot topics like Apple in the early days, the day John quit the Beatles, the Maureen/Ringo/George triangle; Paul in 1968, Paul and Linda as a couple. John Lennon during the "lost weekend," the day Paul quit the Beatles and George's reaction. the Beatles vs. the Stones, and much more.
An interesting artist in popular music and a controversial figure in Beatledom, Yoko Ono has played an outsized role in crafting many of the tropes and narratives that still predominate Beatles history. Phoebe and Thalia discuss Yoko's music, art and mastery of publicity and media.
This episode is dedicated entirely to the one and only Ringo Starr! His musicianship, his chemistry with the other Beatles, and how interesting he is as a human being are often overshadowed in the fandom, but Paul continues into present day to refer to Ringo as "the best drummer in the world," and Dave Grohl calls him, "the king of feel." Like Paul, Dave, and most of the music world, we feel Ringo deserves more accolades! Join us as we celebrate his uniqueness, creativity, and innovation as a musician, as well as his interesting life story.
In Part 2 of our deep dive into "How Do You Sleep?", we attempt to dissect George's role in the creation of the song, his perspective on Lennon-McCartney as a unit, and the impact his participation may have had on George's relationships with both John and Paul.
John Lennon alternately referred to the song as “nasty,” “not that serious” and his response to “withdrawing from Paul and the Beatles and the relationship with Paul.” One would be hard-pressed to find a Beatles/Lennon song that has caused more long-term professional and emotional damage than 1971’s How Do You Sleep.
Lennon certainly dishes out the jibes in this rancorous diatribe, but can the song withstand some lampooning in return? In this episode, AKOM takes a harsh look at HDYS. At times analytic, at times sympathetic and at times adopting the same mocking tone as the song itself.
