On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes.
Goldsmith wrote Dawes’ 2009 debut album, North Hills, in his early 20s. More than a decade later, he’s only continued to grow as a songwriter, resulting in the band’s ninth studio full-length, Oh Brother, which was released this past October.
Before the band hit the road to tour those songs with Winnetka Bowling League, Goldsmith caught up with Madden about balancing being happy while also wanting more from life, getting better at being himself, and their latest album.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Cameron Diaz.
Artist Friendly is reaching another huge milestone, celebrating 100 episodes with actor and entrepreneur Cameron Diaz. After becoming a major star, Diaz stepped away from Hollywood in 2014 to “reclaim [her] own life” — which included exploring her passions and spending time with family.
Now, a decade later, she will return to the big screen for the aptly titled Back in Action with Jamie Foxx, which premieres on Netflix in January 2025. She also launched the organic wine brand Avaline with Katherine Power in 2020.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Damiano David of Måneskin.
Måneskin — the ’70s-inspired Eurovision winners who became viral stars — have been championed by young rock fans. Over the past few months, though, their frontman David has been branching out by sharing songs from his first solo album (including the Labrinth-produced “Silverlines” and “Born With a Broken Heart”), which is set to arrive next year.
In a conversation with Madden, the Måneskin singer reveals the importance of doing what makes you happy, missing family and friends on the road, and his upcoming solo project.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by DJ Tambe.
DJ Tambe is an award-winning tattoo artist whose love for the medium stretches back to performing stick-and-pokes as a teenager. That passion led him to Ink Master, where he became a three-time winner (including two consecutive victories) of the hit show and has graduated to a judge.
In a conversation with Madden, DJ Tambe opens up about overcoming addiction, the importance of family, and going from contestant to judge on Ink Master, which is now streaming on Paramount+.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Tim Kasher of Cursive.
Kasher has fronted Cursive since the mid-’90s, leading the band through emo, post-hardcore, and dissonant experimentation.
Having just released their 10th studio album, Devourer, which represents “personal imperialism and the imperialism of relationships,” the band will support their Omaha peers Bright Eyes on tour in April.
In a conversation with Madden, the Nebraska-born indie rocker delves into his love of directing, the steady growth of the band’s near 30-year career, and Devourer.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jessi Cruickshank.
A self-described “comedian with too many kids,” Cruickshank has been involved in the entertainment circuit for decades. Her origins in the scene trail back to her high school improv group, where she starred alongside Seth Rogen and Nathan Fielder before landing jobs at CTV, MTV, and The CW, weaving in comedy while interviewing celebrities.
In a conversation with Madden, Cruickshank dives into her love for boy bands, motherhood, her surprising answer to how she balances it all, and her first-ever comedy special “Minivan Money,” which is now streaming on Veeps.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Brandon Saller of Atreyu.
Over the past year, the Orange County metalcore vets have stayed furiously busy. In 2022, they put out an EP trilogy that began with The Hope of a Spark and continued with The Moment You Find Your Flame and A Torch In The Dark.
Those releases culminated in the band’s heavy but reflective ninth studio album, The Beautiful Dark of Life.
Then, earlier this year, Atreyu unleashed The Pronoia Sessions — a 10-song collection that takes eight of their hits “to a whole new place” and features a pair of covers (Audioslave and Tom Petty).

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by 24kGoldn.
24kGoldn became a huge name after going viral on TikTok with “VALENTINO” in 2019. Since blowing up, the rapper has worked with several heavyweights, including Quavo, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, and Future (the latter of whom appeared on his debut album, 2021’s El Dorado).
This year only got bigger, as 24kGoldn shared his introspective Growing Pains EP and is currently on tour with Chase Atlantic in support of their new album, LOST IN HEAVEN.
In a conversation with Madden, he opens up about manifesting, navigating the release of a hit single during COVID-19, and how chasing success can dilute artistry.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Ryan Ashley.
Though Ashley dreamed of becoming a tattoo artist as a teenager, she didn’t think it was realistic and became a fashion designer instead. Specializing in beads and lace, she ultimately used that eye for detail and deep understanding of tattoo culture to win Ink Master season 8 in 2016.
Since winning in 2016, she’s gone on to appear in spin-offs and other seasons, including serving as a judge on season 16 of Ink Master, which is airing now.
In a conversation with her co-star, Ashley reflects on her most meaningful tattoo, the challenges of being a working mom, and behind-the-scenes stories from the Ink Master set.

Jefferson is a storied photographer within punk and alternative spaces. From his work in the revered skateboarding magazine Thrasher and being a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Lakers to shooting AP’s WILLOW cover in 2021, Jefferson embodies the culture.
“I am still always inspired by so much new skateboarding and photography,” he told AP, but whether he’s unveiling collaborations with Supreme or Modernica, music remains in the foreground.
During his conversation with Madden, Jefferson digs into his beginnings in the skateboarding world, capturing everyone from Playboi Carti to Tyler, the Creator, and his biggest inspiration.

Christian Yu began making music under the moniker DPR IAN in late 2015 as one of the founding members of Seoul’s DPR (“Dream Perfect Regime”) collective, which creates, directs, produces, and edits various multimedia projects for its roster.
Having put out two EPs in the last couple of years, DPR IAN has transformed into an unpredictable solo artist whose work blurs together pop, R&B, rock, and electronica with painstaking attention to detail.
In a conversation with Madden, the Australian singer, rapper, and director dives into building new versions of yourself, tattoos as intimate memories, and his current THE DREAM REBORN tour.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Dexter Holland of The Offspring.
The Offspring have been kicking around for four decades, but the band are celebrating a major milestone this year — the 30th anniversary of their mainstream triumph Smash, which remains the biggest-selling rock album released on an indie label.
In a similar vein as Dookie, punk purists disregarded the band when they signed to Columbia following its release, but they’ve only grown in stature over the years.
Now, the Orange County vets are readying their 11th studio album, Supercharged (out Oct. 11), which was produced by Bob Rock and continues their streak of writing punk hits.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria.
As the frontman for Coheed and Cambria, Sanchez has mapped out entire worlds through intricate concept albums. That craftsmanship has spilled into his own comic series, The Amory Wars, which has acted as a companion to most of the band’s catalog.
Beginning this week, Coheed will embark on a series of rare full album playthroughs of their 2005 LP, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, which includes Furnace Fest, When We Were Young, and two shows in Australia. Grab tickets here.

After leaving the show in 2016, he went on to expand his acting CV, including playing Shawn in the hit horror-comedy The Blackening, appearing on The Simpsons, and voicing Bulletproof in Invincible season 2.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jax.
Whether she’s critiquing Victoria’s Secret in hit pop songs, crafting TikTok clips with Paris Hilton, or posting viral parodies of “Stacy’s Mom,” Jax imbues comedy into everything she touches.
Brought up by musical theater, Jax has parlayed her time onstage into countless funny songs (and even some famous covers) that generate thousands of views.
In a full-circle moment, Jax gets into a proper conversation with Madden after meeting him as a teenager at a Good Charlotte show, where one of her early bands opened a couple of dates during their 2011 tour with Forever the Sickest Kids.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Reggie Watts.
Watts is an experimental comedian and musician whose improvised sets are created using just his voice, a keyboard, and a looping machine. Whether he’s beatboxing, pulling off deft impersonations, or switching into different languages, Watts takes pleasure in confusing everyone around him, never performing the same show twice.
His surreal style has led him to several seasons on Comedy Bang! Bang!, guiding the house band for The Late Late Show with James Corden, and hosting the game show Taskmaster — injecting originality and oddness into everything he does.
The comedian also has a new special, Never Mind, available to stream on Veeps, where he transports the audience back to the ’90s from LA’s Regent Theater.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by HARDY.
Growing up in the small town of Philadelphia, Mississippi, HARDY was introduced to heavy music in high school. Soon, he fell in love with nü metal and metalcore, including System of a Down, Linkin Park, and August Burns Red.
It’s all culminated in an overlap of country and hardcore within his own music, where HARDY has scratched out a unique space.
His 2023 album, the mockingbird & THE CROW, was split into two halves — country and hard rock — the latter featuring a collaboration with A Day to Remember’s Jeremy McKinnon. Since then, it’s hit No. 1 on the Top Country Albums, Top Rock Albums, and Top Hard Rock Albums charts and rose to No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Lainey Wilson.
Over the past decade, Wilson has blossomed into a bonafide country star. The Southern-bred singer has written tracks with Luke Combs, made her acting debut in Yellowstone (as well as had her songs featured on its soundtrack), and devised her own genre, “bell bottom country.”
The sound combines Southern rock, soul, and a distinctly Nashvillian POV, where she now resides. That’s best heard on her latest album, Whirlwind, which continues to play with the boundaries of her sound and includes a wistful duet with Miranda Lambert.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Morgan Lander of Kittie.
Kittie formed in London, Ontario during the late ’90s when the Lander sisters — Morgan and Mercedes — were teenagers.
Near the turn of the millennium, the band unleashed their debut album, Spit, which explored hate, ignorance, and misogyny — and grew into their biggest-selling album.
Earlier this year, Kittie made an explosive comeback with Fire, their first new album in 13 years, that reconciled with their nü-metal beginnings and sharpened their rage.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jakob Nowell of Sublime.
After disbanding in 1996, Long Beach ska veterans Sublime reunited at this year’s Coachella — with Nowell filling in for his late father, Bradley.
Between honoring his father’s legacy and creating his own futuristic songs as Jakobs Castle, Nowell has proved that he’s a talented musician who’s determined to keep rock ’n’ roll a family affair.
He’s played a handful of shows in support of this year’s debut album, Enter: The Castle, has plans to revive old Sublime compositions, and gets into a nearly hour-long chat with Madden about his whirlwind year.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Shaggy 2 Dope of Insane Clown Posse.
Given that Violent J sat down with Madden last summer, it’s fitting that the other half of the Detroit horrorcore outfit joins the series — just in time to talk about Gathering of the Juggalos.
Beginning in 2000, the annual festival acts like a modern-day Woodstock, bringing together a community of kindred spirits where “anything can happen — and quite often does.”

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Pierre Bouvier of Simple Plan.
Simple Plan grew from pop-punk underdogs to genre heroes over the course of six studio albums.
In addition to racking up collabs with members of blink-182, Sum 41, and Weezer, the Canadian vets have played on over a dozen Warped Tours and created pop-punk essentials through early tracks like “Welcome to My Life” and “I’m Just a Kid.”
The latter experienced a viral moment through TikTok at the beginning of the decade, challenging people to recreate childhood photos as adults and post the results, which featured participation from Will Smith, Ed Sheeran, and beyond.
Given that their friendship stretches back to the 2000s, the duo get into it all across a nearly hour-long episode.

Sleep Theory have experienced an abrupt rise over the past year, earning viral acclaim on TikTok (their clip of “Another Way” accrued half a million views within 36 hours), signing to Epitaph, and later sharing stages with Beartooth and I Prevail.
It’s a sign of bigger things to come for the Memphis-bred four-piece, who meld hard rock and R&B into an intoxicating combination.
Most recently, their “Fallout” video racked up 2 million views, and the band will share a new song, “Stuck In My Head,” on Thursday (July 18), which follows up last year’s Paper Hearts EP.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind.
Third Eye Blind are in the midst of their Summer Gods tour with Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A, both of which grew up listening to the ’90s vets.
The band are playing nearly 20 songs from their wide-spanning catalog nightly, including perennial favorites “Jumper,” “Never Let You Go,” and “Semi-Charmed Life,” and the run goes until early August.
“I have this sense that I am feeling the same way everybody else is — that we need a summer tour so badly,” Jenkins says. “We need the lights, the noise, the heat, and everybody up close to each other.
Additionally, their 1999 sophomore album, Blue, will turn 25 later this year.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Ian Shelton of Militarie Gun.
Though Militarie Gun are only a year removed from their buzzy debut album, Life Under the Gun, they’ve essentially been touring nonstop — first on their own headliner and then opening dates for A Day to Remember this past June.
It’s a mentality that defines the band — always moving, looking forward, and giving back to the community that raised them to achieve something far greater.
“Touring is disruptive, but it also fits in the rhythm of my life — waking up, getting in the van, and driving in the next city is a thing that makes sense to my brain,” Shelton explained during their AP cover story interview. “I can pretty much do that on an infinite loop.”

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by G Flip.
G Flip recently wrapped a lengthy run across North America and the U.K. in support of their latest album, Drummer, including a stop at the final day of Governors Ball in NYC.
The appropriately titled album, which came out last summer, is a love letter to the instrument that made them fall in love with music — while also serving as a tribute to their late drum teacher, Jenny Rose Morrish.
“She was very integral to my life,” they told Rolling Stone in 2023. “I honestly think if I didn’t have her in my life, I wouldn’t be sitting here with you. I just happened to have the best teacher in the world.”

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Grace Potter.
Potter is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter whose bluesy approach takes inspiration from the ’60s and ’70s, when singers like Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin reigned.
Last year, she released her fifth studio album, Mother Road, which was produced by her husband Eric Valentine.
Recorded across Nashville, Topanga, and Hollywood, Potter was motivated to write the LP after returning from a road trip, and in a few days, she’ll head out on a tour in support that runs until the fall.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Darius Rucker.
With Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker has lived an unexpected life by turning a college party band into a fruitful, chart-smashing career.
Over the years, though, his Southern upbringing in Charleston, South Carolina called, leading him to ride out to Nashville and land a record deal as a country artist.
It’s given him new possibilities, yielding anthemic hits (“Wagon Wheel,” “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”) and allowing him to share stages with his heroes.
Rucker ended up documenting his country fame and accidental journey with Hootie, as well as exploring the music that shaped him, in his recently released memoir, Life’s Too Short.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jon Foreman of Switchfoot.
The early aughts band rang in a big milestone last year with the 20th anniversary of The Beautiful Letdown. They celebrated by curating a special deluxe edition, featuring newly recorded tracks from fans of the band — including the Jonas Brothers, twenty one pilots’ Tyler Joseph, and Owl City, to name a few — in addition to a re-recorded version of the album and B-sides from the vault.
After performing the record in its entirety last year, they’re hitting the road again this summer with fellow vets Blue October and Matt Nathanson as part of a triple co-headliner, which features a rotating lineup every night.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Alec Benjamin.
Releasing his third studio album, 12 Notes, earlier this month, Benjamin takes us through a vulnerable journey, as each song is meant to mirror a journal entry and represent a different section of his life.
Naturally, that includes taking different turns across the whole album, including rapping (“I Sent My Therapist to Therapy”) and working with Grammy-winning duo Stargate for pop love songs (“Different Kind of Beautiful”).
Benjamin also recently announced his headline tour, launching in September, where he will make stops in more than two dozen cities across North America.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jake Duzsik of HEALTH.
Last year’s RAT WARS, their sixth studio album and one of their best, is loaded with menacing bite, noisy gloom, and crushing danceability that points to an apocalyptic future, balancing a bold, ambitious vision with despair.
Now, the neo-industrial trio are taking that record out on the road, including an appearance at Download Festival and a date opening for Bring Me the Horizon in June. HEALTH also recently teamed up with Bad Omens on their heavy new song “THE DRAIN.”

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Reyna Roberts.
For the unfamiliar, Roberts is a fast-rising country artist. Last year was huge for the “princess of outlaw country,” as she shared her debut album, Bad Girl Bible, Vol. 1, toured with Reba McEntire, and was featured in the Grammy Museum.
The Alabama-bred artist also recently snagged two features on Beyonce’s heel-turn country album Cowboy Carter — her first features ever — on the tracks “Blackbiird” and “Tyrant,” which coincides with her mission to bring more awareness to Black musicians within the genre.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Bea Miller.
Since her emergence in 2014, Miller has created frank pop-rock songs that sound massive. It makes total sense when you consider her influences, as she grew up exposed to hundreds of records from her mother, a former vinyl DJ, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Alanis Morissette.
Then when she was 12, she experienced a life-altering Paramore concert. Watching Hayley Williams onstage “felt transcendent,” and she wanted to be able to do the same one day — even bringing it full circle by playing their 2013 hit “Ain’t It Fun” in her live sets.

Since then, he’s seen intense success that’s led to a slew of memorable movies (The Other Guys, Moana). Most recently, he starred as the titular character in Black Adam — a passion project that “disrupts the superhero genre” — as well as Red Notice and Jumanji: The Next Level.

Kay is a viral country star who’s shared stages with Tim McGraw, Clay Walker, and Tracy Lawrence, all before releasing her debut album. That project, All I’ve Ever Known, was shared last October, chronicling her divorce in tender detail.
“This album is the most raw, vulnerable, and wide open I have ever been when creating music, which can be terrifying and healing at the same time,” she said in a press statement.
Later this year, Kay will go on tour with Jelly Roll, and the run launches in late August. You can grab tickets here.

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Aric Improta.
Improta is a Grammy-nominated drummer who plays for the prog-metal band Night Verses and formerly FEVER 333. Beyond his blistering showmanship, Improta often incorporates technology into his playing to push the boundaries of the instrument and reimagine a different future.
“The goal is always to feel as possessed by the music as possible. When I see a performer with absolute control, it’s usually impressive but rarely breathtaking. I prefer to see that expert level of control pushed to its furthest limit,” he wrote in 2023, accompanying a photo of the drummer in mid-air.

Griff is a U.K. singer-songwriter who cites Jack Antonoff, Imogen Heap, and James Blake as influences.
She played only one show supporting her 2019 EP, Mirror Talk, then created the 2021 LP One Foot In Front of The Other in her bedroom during pandemic lockdowns, which shot her to fame. Now, she’s readying the release of her latest single, “miss me too,” which was written in between tours.
“I booked a little Airbnb and sent my location to Lostboy and Siba, who I co-wrote ‘Black Hole’ with,” she says. “We converted the living room of the cottage into a studio and wrote ‘miss me too.’ I had been trying to write a song for a while about losing yourself, and missing a past version of yourself that wasn’t so broken.”

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach.
More than 20 years since their inception, Papa Roach continue to thrive.
Their 2000 album Infest seems to grow bigger every year as new people discover songs like “Last Resort” and “Blood Brothers.” They also remain on the road in support of their 2022 LP Ego Trip, including wrapping the second leg of their own Rockzilla tour and supporting Shinedown across the U.S. last year.
“I’m not good when shit’s just calm, quiet, still — I need some chaos,” Shaddix told Alternative Press in 2022. “I’ve got too much energy inside, and if I just sit stagnant, it drives me fucking mad. I need that release — that’s why I go run all the time. That’s why I go to the gym, because I’m an energetic being. So performing is such a healthy experience for me. I get to explode, physically and emotionally.”

Celebrate 50 episodes of Artist Friendly as Joel Madden is joined by multi-GRAMMY award-winning rapper Lil Wayne.
Wayne, who joined Good Charlotte onstage for “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous” at When We Were Young back in October, has shifted from an off-the-wall rapper — always packing a punchline — to an elder statesman who can still spin woozy bars. After releasing his platinum debut album, Tha Block Is Hot, when he was 17, Wayne continued to make his mark with Tha Carter series, which boasts bonafide classics like “A Milli,” “6 Foot 7 Foot,” and “Hustler Musik.”
All these years later, Wayne remains inspired, as evinced by his latest project, Welcome 2 Collegrove, a collaborative LP with 2 Chainz, that was released in November.

Country artist and songwriter Orville Peck joins Joel Madden on this week's episode of Artist Friendly.
Since his arrival, Peck has become synonymous with the queer side of country music. With his 2019 debut album, Pony, the fringe-masked musician proved that punk and country are alike while rocking a dark baritone and breaking genre conventions. His follow-up, 2022’s Bronco, explored those freedoms more deeply.
From his friendship with drag queen Trixie Mattel to crooning about his lovers, Peck offers necessary representation in country music. You can also catch Peck live at his upcoming Rodeo festival, which serves as a three-day celebration of country music, comedy, drag, and more.

This week on Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by DJ Paul, a founding member of hip-hop luminaries Three 6 Mafia.
The Memphis collective broke ground when they released their debut album, Mystic Stylez, in 1995. That LP became a landmark, particularly for the underground, with its foreboding cover and love for the occult.
After following it up with two more dark records, 1996’s Da End and 1997’s Chapter 2: World Domination, it became clear that Three 6 Mafia were creating a remarkable legacy.
Fast-forward two decades and DJ Paul has become involved in other endeavors, from his record label Scale-A-Ton Entertainment to the fashion line Dangerus / Skandulus.

In a conversation with Alternative Press Editor in Chief Anna Zanes, Benji and Joel Madden reflect on the different eras of Good Charlotte — and what has allowed them to create enduring businesses, as well as maintain longevity as musicians.
“I think that the idea that always comes to my mind about everything that we do or have done — the theme of what injured us, what we thought was our weakness, what our trauma was — always ends up being our strength,” Joel says of the band.
Check out the Fall 2023 issue of Alternative Press for this episode's companion cover story. This issue also comes with three alternate collectible covers featuring Scowl, Yves Tumor and Poppy, as well as stories on Jean Dawson, Shapel Lacy and Toby Morse, Genesis Owusu, and more.

Check out Hanson’s upcoming single, “Blueberry Pancakes,” coming out next Friday, February 3.

Episode 1 is a raw and sincere conversation where Joel and De’Wayne unpeel layer after layer of each other’s lives, in the pursuit of learning how the artist, and human, was created — from the things that drive them creatively, how tough childhood dynamics shaped them, growing up without money, the hip hop entrepreneurs that lit their paths, and finding their own swagger. How at 24, De’Wayne knew he wasn’t ready but he kept showing up as a kind soul, working hard, being true to his creativity, and today, at 27, as he releases his second album My Favorite Blue Jeans he’s riding the wave as the world is finally ready for De’Wayne to unleash.
