Aussie and the Scotsman talk movies

Heat with Simon

61 min • 7 februari 2025

This podcast is dedicated to our great mates Justin (31) and Scott (21) who passed away way too early.

This week we review the 1995 American crime film Heat written and directed by Michael Mann.

It features an ensemble cast led by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, with Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, and Val Kilmer in supporting roles.

The film follows the conflict between an LAPD detective, played by Pacino, and a career thief, played by De Niro, while also depicting its effect on their professional relationships and personal lives.

We are delighted to welcome Simon in this studio. Simon is a friend of both boys and he is here visiting from Perth, WA.

Simon did a 3 year undergraduate degree focusing on film and TV for 3 years after his law degree. Making a couple of short films, working on a TV show and studying the history of film.

Sit back and listen to this student of film, school-us in how to review a movie with intelligence, depth and real knowledge.

The Aussie dominates early on and holds his own, focused on every word that comes out Simon's mouth.

This is a movies movie. We discuss the direction, lighting, cinematography, foley effects and "the space between the talking".

The Aussie and the Scotsman see this movie as a cops and robbers movie, Simon sees it as a character study. An exploration of the clash of characters. How human nature is sometimes so strong it won't allow us to do the right thing. Sometimes pride and arrogance does get in the way at the detriment of some characters.
