Back in 1972 when you had a problem with someone, and if you could afford it you'd call a mechanic, but if Charles Brosnson turned up at your door chances are he wasn't going to replace a tyre of cam belt.
The mechanic in question is a term for a hit man and Charlie is doing nicely until Jan Michael Vincent comes along and want to be taught the ways of the world. Luckily we're not discussing Jan's interpretation of the script...that's a whole different podcast, but the action is in good hands with ALAN GIBBS in charge, in particular the exciting bike chase which we highlight here. Without question the finest example of war ever captured on film. Steven Spielberg's Day Landing movie was so powerful it was accepted by veterans as the most accurate depiction of warfare.
Stunt Coordinator SIMON CRANE did a wonderful job, creating the action, aided by stuntmen like PAUL HEASMAN who plays a very important role.
I am very lucky to be joined by Central Televisions STEVE CLAMP who before becoming the broadcasters nightly newsman was working for Action Vehicles who provided all of the period vehicles for this movie. He breaks down what it was like to be on set back then.

Ben Hur is one of the greatest biblical epics of our time. When in 1959 Charlton Heston took the lead role and William Wyler directed it became the most expensive film ever made and won 11 Academy Awards. The following year Stunt Coordinator YAKIMA CANUTT was presented with an Honorary Oscar for his achievement in the action business.
In 2016 a new version was made - technology allowed the filmmakers to do things they couldn't have dreamt of back in 59. The cast said, "its not a remake, its a reimagining". The action is very clever and well worth exploring....the final film although being over 80 mins shorter than the original, just doesn't tick any of the boxes ticked over and over again by the 1959 classic.

In this episode I discuss, alongside the fabulous Dr. Lisa Funnell, the female action icon. How many times have you seen lists online or in the papers talking about the Best Top 10 of this or the Most Influential Top 20 of that?
The media loves lists, primarily when we have slow news days....but are these lists any good?

Back in the day, I'm allowed use that phrase as I'm of a certain age, ITV was the home of light entertainment. 7pm you could see Emmerdale Farm, not Emmerdale...this was in the days when it was about farming and not adultery or murder.
This would have been followed by Coronation Street and then at 8pm was This Is Your Life hosted by wonderful Eamonn Andrews.
This episode is only one of two where a stuntman is the unsuspecting guest.
The sound is a little loose in places but its a wonderful moment in history and I hope you enjoy it.

A look at what was happening in the world of Bob Simmons and Bond back in 1983.
An important time to be a fan and if you worked on the Bond a great time to have Bob Simmons on your side.
He was a remarkable man and his achievements on the picture with his stunt team and supervisor Paul Weston are a major reason for the films success.
Step back to June of 1983 and lets look at why Bob Simmons and the stunt team gave Bond his all time high

Ray Austin was for many a founding father of stunt work. Here in the UK he was one of those few who gave many of the stunt business legends a leg up at the start of their careers. He gave Rocky Taylor an opportunity at doubling Patrick MacNee on The Avengers and he never looked back.
Ray's story is fascinating and this interview will give you an insight into his world, a magical world where if you dreamed big dreams you could have a big career.

Roy Scammell was an extraordinary character.
Often seen on screen and easily recognisable by his shock of blonde hair.
If you've ever seen anyone rollerskating in a film from 1970 to 1985 it was probably Roy. Apart from those skills he has fight arranging and stunt coordinating details on many movies and TV shows that have become household favourites.
This is an interview from 2018 and it was for the show The Stunt Pod

A film that I've seen on many occasions and one that has many key moments.
Lawrence Olivier starring alongside Gregory Peck is enough to get the juices flowing, but we also have an added element of K9 proportions. Three Doberman's are set to attack Peck at the end of the film.
How is this done? Who are the stunt doubles and what are the risks?
Have a listen and fight out more - the rest of the story will be told on Friday on the YouTube channel

Richie Gaona is one of those select few of top US stuntmen who had an opportunity to work on the biggest and best productions Hollywood can throw at them.
Starting out life in the family business of circus performer Richie quickly realised that his skills would be put to good use in the film game. A helping hand along the way from an established stuntman and coordinator, gave him a shove in the right direction.
Not only is he a great performer, coordinator and circus coordinator and advisor but he's also one of the nicest humans on the planet. This has been my good fortune to know and admire the man over the last 10yrs.

Sir Norman Wisdom was definitely an important factor in the success of the stuntman in film. Norman was guaranteed to make you laugh whatever you did. He couldn't walk down the street without seeing an opportunity to fall over and make people laugh.
Tex Fuller was a stuntman who was perfectly cast as Norman's stuntman for many of his movie outings. They worked very closely together but didn't always see eye to eye. However, in amongst all of this chais common sense did prevail and the really dangerous stuff was left to Tex.

"Broadsword calling Danny Boy"
Growing up, the only Danny Boy I was familiar with was the song sung by the family at special occasions like funerals. Before I knew it, sure wasn't it the calling card for this Richard Burton classic.
A classic on so many levels, firstly the cast. Bringing together Burton and Eastwood was a stroke of genius. Mary Ure was another excellent casting decision alongside Ingrid Pitt. The score by Ron Goodwin so easily recognisable and the action. Coordinated by JOE POWELL with 2nd Unit Directed by YAKIMA CANUTT.
Here I discuss the action with stuntwoman GILLIAN ALDAM who doubled Mary Ure and JIM DOWDALL who worked for Bapty, the armourers at the time, but got himself involved on the picture.

I'm joined by crime writer and boxing aficionado Rob Parker who gives us a look inside the ring as he boxes on a regular basis. What's it like to be hit in the fight, how could they create these shots for this film?

A war epic set in a Norfolk village. A bit like an episode of the Archers if Putin popped in for a pint.
Based on the Higgins novel from the previous year, Michael Caine plays a German officer....obviously, who alongside Robert Duvall and Donald Sutherland are given their orders from Hitler via Himmler....are you keeping up with this?
Kill Churchill is the order - will they do it? Who will stop them? Who cares? Not the director John Sturgess very clearly, but its been a fan favourite for many years. Stunt Coordinator is the wonderful GERRY CRAMPTON and he is given a very solid team of performers. Enjoy

After the untimely passing of Robbie Coltrane recently I was very moved by the amount of tributes that were pouring in from many stunt performers/coordinators who had worked with him over the years.
I thought it would be interesting to explore doubles wearing costumes and especially those who have to wear costumes that could prevent regular movement. Robbie played Hargrid in the Harry Potter films and his costume is an excellent example.
So stick around and i'll throw some light on this for you.

Highlander:
is as good as a film gets in my opinion. Good cast, well directed and a score to die for. But its action scenes rule supreme. PETER DIAMOND is stunt coordinator in the UK and VIC MAGNOTTA is the coordinator in the US. We try to explore a bit more about this movie by talking to another big name that was part of the shoot. 2nd Unit Director ANDY ARMSTRONG who explains how he got the job and what it meant to him.
Highlander 2 The Quickening:
is a sequel that could have done without being made. The success of the first film begged for a follow up but the script didn't allow for a great deal of fluidity when it came to story. Action is coordinated by ERNIE ORSATTI who brings in stuntmen like TOMMY HUFF to double Lambert and ROCKY TAYLOR to double Connery. We also chat to villain Michael Ironside about his role in the stunts on the picture.

Without question one of the great action films.
The movie that made Keanu the action icon he later became thanks to the Matrix.
Stunt Coordinator GARY HYMES at the helm and the bus jump is the big talking point. Done for real, driven by stuntman JOPHREY BROWN it stands the test of time as a magnificent piece of action cinema.
Join me as we look at this jump and put some flesh on the bones about how it was created in the first place.

PIERCE BROSNAN before Bond is a rip roaring tale of bombs that cannot be defused in the usual bomb-disposal way.

In 1939 YAKIMA CANUTT performed a stunt in the film 'Stagecoach' which changed action cinema forever.
It is the one stunt that is loved universally by stunt professionals. But why?
We discuss this with the one man who has plenty of experience in this very gag. The magnificent TERRY LEONARD who has had two bites of this fast moving cherry. So sit back and enjoy the big man talk us through everything that involves lying on your back under six horses.

Without question the greatest Christmas movie of all time. Well, in my opinion anyway. Not only a wonderful story, fine cast, beautifully shot and another magnificent score by John Williams, but the stunts are quite simply iconic.
Nowadays on the set of a Film or TV show you may hear the stunt coordinator telling the stunt performer that they have to do a 'Home Alone' in the next shot. They will know that this means crashing to the ground hard and from some height or distance.
Stunt Coordinator FREDDIE HICE was the man behind the action on the film but without stuntmen TROY BROWN and LEON DELANEY the bad guys just wouldn't have been funny.

Take an story of everyday folk.
Two college friends from the US go on a trip to the UK. They find a rural north English village and enquire what the 5 pointed star on the wall is all about. From then on its not going to go well.
Both attacked on the moors. One is killed the other will become a werewolf at the next full moon....luckily for us what the script doesn't allow the action makes up for. ALF JOINT is in charge with VIC ARMSTRONG as his assistant coordinator. Great action in the capital makes this one of the must see pictures.

Long before those all inclusive holidays and exciting package deals - and before COVID - there was Westworld. The place to go and let your wildest fantasies loose in a safe environment.
Safe until the robots decide to get their own back. Wasn't it Jeff Goldblum who said when someone made the comment about Jurassic Park being like Pirates of the Caribbean , "the only difference is on Pirates they don't come alive and eat the public". A similar situation here - from the pen of Michael Crichton who also directed the movie.

Pierce Brosnan has established himself as a great Bond after his appearance in Goldeneye, now he must go that little bit further with Tomorrow Never Dies and what a ride.
Simon Crane wasn't available as he was off shooting the movie about the sinking ship....no not the Devonshire the other one so director Roger Spottiswoode managed to get hold of his pal Vic Armstrong who returned to Bond after 10yrs away doing other projects.
We speak to VIC ARMSTRONG then ROCKY TAYLOR gives us a crash course in becoming a 'cunning linguist' and the man himself PIERCE BROSNAN explains what it was like to see his BMW drive around with nobody in it....apart from stuntman STEVE GRIFFIN that is.

Ladies and Gentleman Pierce Brosnan is Bond and everything is alright with the world.
We've been waiting since 1986 and finally 1995 comes along and he's got the gig. A new man in the top job and a new man as stunt coordinator as SIMON CRANE takes over.
We find out about how some of these extraordinary scenes are put together with stuntman JIM DOWDALL who was responsible for a lot of military advising and a bit of tank driving, GARY POWELL who not only drove the tank for majority of that amazing chase in St Petersburg, but also dies a thousand deaths as did PAUL HERBERT who starts his dying for Bond as the pilot of the plane in the pre-title.

Another of my favourites and this time its Sean Connery teaming up with Mark Harmon. Peter Hyams action thriller from 1988 and its action is coordinated by Glenn Wilder.
Shot mostly on location the movie takes advantage of Mark Harmon's agility, not only as a very fine actor who later went on to be the face of NCIS but as a man who if he hadn't gone into acting may well have been one of the great quarterbacks in American Football.
His stunt double is Norman Howell and the two of them really work very well together in this movie.

Steve McQueens last movie but what a way to go out.
A wonderful story about a man who is used to things being how they used to be - he doesn't like new stuff - the old is just fine. Steve McQueen was dying from Cancer and was just over a year away from the end.
His stuntman Loren Janes doubles him on this outing as he had done for the previous 21yrs. Stunt coordinator is Gary Combs and we hear from not only Loren Janes but also from stuntman Tommy Rosales who plays a character called Bernardo.
One of McQueens best roles in my opinion. This one is full of action too because this old man he portrays is a bounty hunter and each person he tries to bring back isn't too keen.

My guest this week is stuntman Andy Bradford who appeared a few times in the film. He lives to fight another day of course and returns next week as 009 in Berlin.
Enjoy.
