Biomechanics on our Minds

We had so much fun talking to Professor Ashley Weaver, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Wake Forest School of Medicine about both her impactful research and educational projects. Her research spans three themes: 1) injury/crash biomechanics to improve car safety design elements 2) osteoporosis in aging and 3) the effects of space and microgravity on astronaut musculoskeletal systems. She uses a number of imaging modalities and modeling techniques to explore these themes and improve human biomechanics and health. In this episode, we dive into markerless motion capture with Dr. Scott Selbie, the Chief Executive Officers of Theia Markerless Inc, Director of Research at C-Motion Inc, an adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Queen's University and in the department of Kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts. We talk about the exciting future of markerless motion capture, the barriers of markerless becoming the new “gold standard” to motion capture, and how Theia aims to overcome these challenges. We also discuss start-ups, industry, and (one of our favorite topics) failure! Additional clarification: To add to our discussion about discussing feature identification, we wanted to add the note that the salient points for the neural network are points that are not necessarily equivalent to the locations that markers are placed. With a physical marker, palpation identifies bony landmarks. For salient features it is less important that the marker represent a bony prominence than it is a location that can be reliably identified on a video image. It turns out that the reliable locations are not coincident with a bony prominence. Today’s episode is the last in a three-part series looking at wellness through the lenses of movement, sleep, and mindset. For today’s conversation, Melissa and Hannah invite Professor Alia Crum to discuss mindset. Alia is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and the Principle Investigator of the Stanford Mind & Body Lab. Her research focuses on mindsets; how they affect important outcomes in such domains as exercise, diet, and stress; and how they can be consciously and deliberately changed through intervention to increase psychological well-being. Alia explains why mindsets are so important, and offers some practical tips on how to leverage our mindsets to improve our health and wellbeing. She shares many interesting research findings from her lab and others, and also offers her own personal experiences of how she practices what she researches.

Today’s episode is the second in a three-part series looking at wellness through the lenses of movement, sleep, and mindset. For today’s conversation, Melissa and Hannah invite Professor Jamie Zeitzer to discuss his work on sleep. Jamie is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, conducting research in the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine. Jamie is very “light focused” in his research, working a lot with circadian rhythms, which are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle. Americans spend just about 7% of their time in natural light and our circadian rhythms are very sensitive to lights. Jamie recommends going outside just a half hour every day can help set us up for better sleep at night. Additionally, exercise, regular routines, and temperatures can be important to getting better sleep. He also recommends being more cognizant of what is helpful and relaxing to you before going to sleep.

Abby is an award-winning Professor of Epidemiology & Population Health and of Medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Her research focuses on the development, evaluation, and translation of public health intervention to reduce chronic disease in the US and globally. Through her research, Abby has found that one of the main barriers to healthy movement practices is environment. Thus, her research centers not only on individuals, but individuals within given contexts. Abby explains what it can look like for an environment to foster movement, encourages simple queues and social support, and describes different forms of healthy movement. This Student Voices episode is hosted by Loay Al-Salehi and Emily Bliven, PhD students in the Orthopaedic Injury Biomechanics Lab at the University of British Columbia. This episode includes an interview with three researchers in the field of injury biomechanics: Dr. Pierre Guy, Dr. Peter Cripton, and Dr. Gunter Siegmund. In this interview, Loay and Emily introduce injury biomechanics as a topic and navigate the interdisciplinary aspects of working in such a field. Dr. Guy is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon who researches hip fracture injury biomechanics with Dr. Cripton, a mechanical engineering professor and researcher. Dr. Siegmund is a lead engineer at MEA Forensic and collaborates with Dr Cripton in studying automotive and neck-related injury biomechanics. The three discuss how the fields of medicine, forensics, engineering, and teaching all come into play as necessary and collaborative components of injury biomechanics research. Topics range from personal pathways to current careers, the use of human surrogates, future technologies, principles fundamental to injury biomechanics, and examples of different professions that are integral to successful collaboration in the field.

As a first-year master’s student, Nicholas addresses common concerns faced when working on a thesis process. Lisa MacFadden, director of the Sanford Sports Science Institute, shares her insights on navigating interdisciplinary work. In this episode, Brian Umberger, professor of Movement Science and director of the Locomotion Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology, joins us to talk about using experiments and modeling together, peer review, and being the president of the American Society of Biomechanics. On this episode, we talk with Professor Cara Wall-Scheffler who is a professor of biology at Seattle Pacific University. Her work spans sexual dimorphism (where two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics beyond the differences in their sexual organs). She talks about how men and women differ with regard to their metabolic cost and walking speed relation. We also talk about faith in science, leading to a discussion of the importance of understanding a variety of perspectives in science, particularly in teaching. She said it best with, “In order to learn you have to feel that your professor cares about you.”

He talks about his research on the interplay between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system, including Parkinson's, and the importance of keeping your research patient-centered. PhD Students Nick Bianco and Chris Dembia give us the low down on OpenSim Moco! Moco solves optimal control problems with musculoskeletal models defined in OpenSim, using direct collocation. We learn how it works and new problems we can now solve with it. They also share their experience developing a software toolkit, including insights into what it is like to work on it as a team and how it has fit in the scope of their PhD.
