In this episode, Nolan Bauerle and I dig into US and Chinese CPI, and discuss what it means for the global economy. We also start off the show as usual by examining the Bitcoin chart and some related news.

US CPI came in under expectations. Month-over-month was 0.2% (m/m) and year-over-year was 3.2% (y/y). Some people might not understand the importance of following CPI as closely as we do. However, we feel it is important to understand money and confirm our predictions based on my geoeconomic theory. So far, it has been very accurate, confirming my theories and adding more weight to my predictions and forecasts about Bitcoin itself.

We went through lots of charts on CPI, honing in on CPI ex-shelter. It is roughly zero, and since shelter is a lagging indicator without a mind of its own, we can predict shelter, too, will come down toward zero or even negative being highly likely.

Next, we cover Chinese CPI and PPI which show a massive global economic slowdown is upon us. Their headline y/y CPI went negative at -0.3%, and their PPI came in at -4.4%! Much of the world is going to enter a big recession in the second half of 2023, but the US will be able to avoid it for the time being.

There was a summary judgment in the Ripple vs SEC case right before we went LIVE. There is mass confusion out there right now, about what this ruling actually means. We read some legal opinions and discuss.

The big story for this episode is US CPI crashing to under 3%. We cover the charts and talk about being right about “transitory” all along. Now that CPI has returned to “normal” the next discussion you’ll hear from macro pundits is about recession. We discuss seasonal timing, and what to expect for recession, CPI, and from the Federal Reserve going forward.

Next up, we cover the dollar which has had an amazingly weak last few days, crashing to new cycle lows. What exactly is happening with the dollar is not clear yet. There is trouble with the Chinese yuan, so perhaps this is manipulation by the Chinese. We’ll have to wait and see how this goes, but I personally do not expect the dollar weakness dramatically. It should rally soon enough.

Lastly, we discuss the new “crypto” bill introduced in the US Senate by Senator Lummis. It has a lot of language around “crypto assets” and “crypto asset intermediaries” that seems to try and let all the scammers off the hook. We conclude that this bill will likely not make it very far.

In this episode, Nolan and I discuss all the big news items of the week having to do with central banks and bitcoin. Larry Fink of Blackrock appeared on Fox Business and called Bitcoin and "international asset", said it is "digitizing gold", and call it "hope". He all the major Bitcoin narratives other than getting rid of trusted third-parties.

It was kind of a sales pitch for his upcoming Bitcoin ETF, and seemed as if he is trying to box the SEC into a corner where they have to approve it.

Nolan and I gave a status report of the Bitcoin ETFs and speculated on a new multipolar world. We are told the poles in this new world will be US, Russia, and China, but it is shaping up to be BRICS vs Davos vs Wall Street. We riff on that idea for a while.

Next, we listen to a WEF spokesman being excited about CBDCs. His comments sound so dystopian that I don't know how any big money will willingly choose to use it. Nolan and I have slightly different opinions on this and we explore that.

Up next, I outline the surprise reshuffle of leadership at the People's Bank of China. The Party Chief and Governor, who were both just reappointed at this year's Communist Party Congress are out, and the former Deputy Governor, Pan Gongsheng is in. Pan is known for his expertise in foreign exchange and his unwavering order following, with the Three Red Lines policy, tech and Bitcoin crackdowns, and more.

We conclude that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is panicking over the crashing yuan.

Lastly, I wanted to provide an update on the Reverse Repo total from the Federal Reserve. We tried to piece this together and figure out what is going on. What do you think?

In this episode, Nolan and I discuss all the big news items of the week having to do with central banks and bitcoin. Blackrock's Bitcoin ETF chances are still top of the list in Bitcoin news. We watch a couple clips of guys who know what they are talking about, Elliot Johnson of EBIT and James Seyffart of Bloomberg. Everything is aligning.

Next, we discussion MicroStategy (MSTR) and their recent bitcoin buy, then get into the North Carolina bill to study adding Bitcoin to their State balance sheet. We take a look at some bitcoin charts, all pressing up on resistance, looking very bullish. Lastly, we tackle the CBDC debate.

The BIS report we covered last week has been the driver of a lot of CBDC speculation this week. On twitter, I tried to debunk it and triggered George Gammon. Bottom line is CBDCs are not going to become a global "unified ledger." All their claims and rhetoric is reminiscent of the ICO white papers circa 2016.

In the whole BIS paper they didn't mention "consensus" once, which is a pretty big deal if you talking about a global, cross-border, sovereignty limiting, ledger. This shows that they are just writing down fantasies like all those ICOs that came before. None of what the BIS proposes is actually viable.

In this episode, Nolan and I discuss all the big news items of the week having to do with central banks and bitcoin. We start by talking about Bitcoin ETFs and the tidal wave of filings, we bring Producer Chris in to give his perspective as well, what it means for bitcoin. Next, we watch a couple Jerome Powell clips from his testimony in front of Congress, specifically his comments on "crypto" and CBDCs. At the end of the show, we discuss the collapse of the Chinese yuan (CNY) and what it can tell us about the state of, not only the Chinese economy, but also the global economy.

In our Bitcoin ETF discussion, we hit on the curious timing of the Blackrock filing in relation to the SEC action against Coinbase and Binance, we speculate on the timing of any approval, its likelihood, and the whole Blackrock versus Grayscale debate.

The CBDC discussion is an interesting one. Federal Reserve Chairman Powell was testifying in front of Congress and said very bluntly, they are not pursuing a retail CBDC. He did say, if they were to pursue a CBDC, which they are not at this time, it would be a wholesale type CBDC.

The IMF managing director Kristalina Georgievahe came out the same day saying, the IMF is still, "working hard on the concept of a global CBDC platform," conflicting with earlier statements only a couple months ago said, "we think that wholesale CBDCs can be put in place with fairly little space for undesirable surprises, whereas retail CBDCs completely transform the financial system in a way that we don’t quite know what consequences it could bring."

Next, on the CBDC front, we cover the arrest of Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, the designer behind the country's war on cash and disastrous CBDC rollout.

We end the episode by looking into the Chinese yuan and discuss what we can learn about the current state of the global economy and what a failing China means going forward.

In this episode, Nolan and I discuss all the big news items of the week having to do with central banks and bitcoin. We hit on the bitcoin price, the SEC drama, Federal Reserve's policy decision from the FOMC by watching and reacting to a couple clips, and then finishing up with the European Central Bank who is hiking rates in a recession.

The clips of JPow included 3 questions by financial reporters. There was a common theme developing, which I was trying to emphasize, that Powell was making a big messaging blunder. They held rates steady, but signaled higher rates by end of the year. The question is simple, if it looks like you will have to keep raising, why not just do it now?

Next, Nolan and I get into a lively debate about the SEC and "crypto". I try to tie everything back to bitcoin and the price. Nolan has valuable experience in the area, but when he says that they can't register, I have to take the other side of that one. The SEC is never going to let a snake oil salesmen register. If the exchanges would have remained bitcoin-only as prescribed by bitcoiners as early as 2011, and altcoins were deemed securities as early as 2014, the exchanges could register easily today.

Lastly, we cover the ECB's rate hike in a recession. They even signaled further rate hikes. If the Fed made a messaging error causing the loss of confidence, the ECB has made a monumental blunder that could be the beginning of the end for the Eurozone.

In this episode, CK, Chris and I talk Coinbase and Binance and what it means for the industry and Bitcoin. After that we discuss the China import/export numbers crashing and what that means for the global economy. Global recession is now spilling over to Germany and Europe as a whole has now entered recession. Lastly, we talk about minor central banks are back to raising their policy rates. What are they thinking?

Of course, Binance and Coinbase were sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week. Lots of public comments were made by the two beleaguered exchanges, top among them that the SEC failed to provide a path to become compliant. This doesn't match with what the SEC has said, so we walk through this issue. We are not lawyers, but we are bitcoin experts, who have correctly predicted how this whole sector would turn so far.

The global recession continues to get worse for China and Europe. One of the central tenants of this show is that deglobalization will lead to dedollarization and bitcoinization. In that process, China and Europe will be hit much harder than the US economy, and despite what the famous macro pundits have said since COVID, we have been much more correct. In fact, they have been exactly wrong on most things, while we have been directionally correct.

Last up for the show is talk about minor central banks. After the banking scares from earlier this year, these smaller central banks have returned to hiking rates. Why would they do this, and what are they thinking, are the questions we ask.

In this episode, CK and I make a global round trip of macro headlines, anchored as always in bitcoin. We begin by going through the bitcoin chart and analyze whether the Hong Kong June 1st news is important or not. Next, the big news item to discuss this week is the US debt ceiling deal. We tease apart a few aspects of the deal, and, perhaps more importantly, we discuss the possible liquidity fallout from the deal.

The US government avoided default (as if that was a real risk in the first place), but the devil is in the details as they say. The Treasury now has the task of refilling their bank account which they keep at the Federal Reserve called the Treasury General Account. They will increase their balance by $500 billion by the end of the month, and to do so, people are worried they will be sucking money out of the economy. Some claim the tightening effect will be like the Fed raising rates 25 bps.

On the podcast, CK and I discuss if this is a real concern or not. I tend to think that there are some bullish and bearish aspects, we cannot know what the net result will be. In that case, we have to fall back on our thesis of where the global economy is as a whole.

Next, we zip over to China and look at the disappointing May PMI data. Manufacturing data slumps even further. Lastly, we connect the hard times in China to the effects on Germany, which this week announced it has entered recession. Q1 2023 came in at -0.3% GDP after Q4 2022 was -0.5%.

In this episode, CK and I are joined by Chris Alaimo to discuss our macro takeaways from the Bitcoin 2023 conference and then refocus on the macro situation at hand via charts of bitcoin, the dollar, oil, and US Treasuries. Lastly, we discuss recent numbers of the deteriorating Chinese real estate market.

In our comments on the conference, we tried to relate our thoughts back to the macro picture to keep it on-topic for this podcast. We mentioned the fact that even though attendence was down, there might have been more bitcoiners there, since last year was a lot of altcoin attendees. Also, there was a palpable shift from speculation toward serious topics this year. Politicians were some of the biggest speakers, and it came across as if the bitcoin voting block is becoming an important thing.

Other comments we have center around bitcoin becoming a "big tent", where lots of different interests, professions and concerns live, all maturing at a slightly different rate. I mentioned that all these different concerns, like money and banking, politics, energy and environment, art and culture, etc., each have their own Overton Windows, and bitcoin is infiltrating all of them.

On the macro side of the house, we discussed the bitcoin price, stocks, and bonds. Please see the charts below.

Lastly, I read through some Chinese numbers on their real estate market. Existing home sales in their largest cities are down double digits in April alone.

Beijing fell 37.3 percent; Hangzhou fell 32.7 percent; Shanghai fell 26.71 percent; and Nanjing fell 13 percent. The worst decline was in Hefei, which plunged by 40 percent.

It seems the world is not going to avert a global recession. Demand for commodities is crashing, "inflation"/prices are coming down, and we are entering the predicted low growth, low inflation environment at the end of a credit bubble.

In this episode, CK and I discuss the developing deflationary scenario for the global economy. Far from showing inflation, US CPI and PPI for April came in under forecasts across the board; bank runs continue, with the latest victim being PacWest; and finally, Chinese economic data is flashing danger. I will quickly summarize all those topics below.

CPI for April came in at 0.36% month-over-month (m/m) making the year-over-year (y/y) rate 4.9%. The data are finally starting to show the shelter component rolling over, which is the most lagging part of the index. PPI (producer price index), seen as being uphill of CPI, showed a massive slowdown, with the y/y PPI coming in at 2.3%. The Fed doesn't have to do anything, it is essentially baked in the cake that CPI will be at 2% in the next few months.

Regional banks continue to have problems. Deposit flight from uninsured deposits into money market funds shows no signs of slowing. Why would anyone keep savings in a bank account for 0.5% interest, when they can put it in a money market fund with two clicks and earn 5%? On top of that, anything over $250,000 is uninsured in a bank, so big depositors are taking their money out. PacWest is just the latest to have issues of deposit flight, which we expect will continue. Perhaps, until all regional banks go bust.

China's import/export data was reported this week. Imports were way down, meaning Chinese demand for commodities is going to be low. Commodities prices should remain low or even fall further. Exports were slightly lower for April. Remember, these are nominal numbers, so the total volume is even lower.

Overall, I tried to build a deflationary picture. CPI dropping, banks are going bust, commodities weakening, while bitcoin ready to serve as a monetary replacement. Cheers.

In this episode, I'm joined by Nolan Bauerle and discuss this week's FOMC monetary policy decision in depth. We hit briefly on a change to the IMF stance on CBDCs, which can be extrapolated more broadly to the Davos globalist clique's position.

The Fed decided to raise their policy rate from 4.75-5% up to 5-5.25%, a 25 basis point (bps) hike. They changed the language in the policy statement, which we read through. The main change was the following:

"The Committee anticipates that some additional policy firming may be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive..." was changed to..."In determining the extent to which additional policy firming may be appropriate..."

Therefore, the Federal Open Market Committee no longer anticipates additional policy firming, but opens the door to determining no additional policy firming is necessary, in other words, a pause.

We watched three clips of Powell's press conference to display the unease Powell displayed, and how he answered important questions. We noted his statement that he was surprised by the SVB bank run, that the Fed would rather tighten too much than not enough (and this might have been too far), and lastly that he does not think a recession is the base case for the rest of the year.

Lastly, we get to the comments made by IMF chairwoman Kristalina Georgieva.

"... retail CBDCs, they completely transform the financial system in a way that we don’t quite know what consequences it could bring."

In this episode, CK and I examine several major economic events of the last week, that when taken in isolation, can fit a totally different narrative than when taken as a whole.

First up is US Q1 GDP. It came in at 1.1% annualized. That is far below industry consensus of 1.9%. The main things were the inventory cycle's effects and higher than expected core PCE ("inflation"). This, however, fits our show's basic premise of returning to a post-GFC normal of low growth. Our low inflation call is somewhat different than PCE, which measures prices not money printing.

Our second topic, M2 money supply shows the second half of our premise is also correct. M2 is shrinking at the fastest rate in, at least, 60 years. This is just one version of money, but it is showing signs of deflation. Taken together with the GDP update, we get our "low growth, low inflation" combo.

Next we tackle one of the biggest narratives in macroeconomics today, dedollarization. We read headline after headline, that countries are starting to ditch the dollar in bilateral trade. We used a Reuters article as an example. That article has an obviously biased headline, that gives itself away in the first sentence of the article.

Argentina to pay for Chinese imports in yuan rather than dollarsArgentina will start to pay for Chinese imports in yuan rather than dollars, the government announced Wednesday, a measure that aims to relieve the country's dwindling dollar reserves. - emphasis added

In the episode, we try to pull apart the reason for the dedollarization talk. It seems there is a massive dollar shortage in the world causing horrible economic effects. The dollar is then a perfect scapegoat and these countries are trying to find alternatives to the dollars which are in short supply.

This is not a "revolt against weaponization of the dollar" story, it is plain and simple deflationary story.

Last, we tie bitcoin into this deflationary narrative. Bitcoin is a dollar alternative just like the yuan, but one without the political, legal, and financial problems of the yuan.

In this episode, we discuss the bitcoin price and a few macro charts up front. I always try to keep our viewers and listeners ahead of other macro sources. For example, this week, we report on the diving 4-week Treasury bill. Something is going on behind the scenes in the market causing this major move.

Other charts we look at are the dollar $DXY on a longer time frame, oil’s reaction to the OPEC+ cut, and total deposits at commercial banks in the US. For all these charts go to the post on bitcoinandmarkets.com.

The main part of the show today is on the testimony of SEC chairman Gary Gensler in front of the Senate Finance Committee. We watched a couple clips that made their way around the internet this week. The attitude of the questions were very popular with crypto bros, but we could see through this attempt at theater. Gensler didn’t seem surprised or rattled in the least.

Lastly, we cover the speech by Christine Lagarde about the fragmentation of the global order. We had to cover it in haste at the end of the show, but I think we covered all the main points. She confirms my narrative that the end of the global order is upon us. However, she refuses to mention the elephants in the room. She doesn’t mention “credit”, “debt” or “deflation” once. She does say “gold” but also avoids the term “bitcoin” in favor of “digital currencies”.

In this episode, CK was running a little late, so Chris Alaimo jumped in to fill in co-hosting duties. A few minutes CK jumps in and we have a good three-host episode.

Our topics for today were Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) numbers out of the US. CPI was released on Wednesday this week, and PPI on Thursday. There was a lot to be learned by taking a look at the data in a certain way. Make sure to check out all the chart on the bitcoinandmarkets.com link above.

March CPI came in under the 0.2% month-over-month (m/m) forecast, at 0.1%. Down from 0.4% last month. If you go back to the February data, the main story-line back then was reacceleration of inflation. I thought that was unlikely, and March saw a dramatic decline.

If you scrap the nearly worthless year-over-year (y/y) headline number, which is only a cumulative m/m, and instead focus on CPI since July 2022, the annualized rate for those 9 months is 3.4%, not the 5.0% of the headline y/y number.

I forecasted CPI to be in the 2% y/y headline range by July this year. To confirm that theory, we rolled into the PPI, or upstream prices that producers are paying. The PPI tends to lead the CPI by 3 months. March PPI came in at -0.5%. Yep, negative.

Lastly, we reexamine the small business funding in the US and banks’ lending standards. The numbers are pretty startling. Lending standards are tightening rapidly and small business sentiment is the lowest EVER. Even lower than the Great Financial Crisis or Dotcom crash.

All these things together tell us that a slowdown is coming. The question now is does that tip over into a hard landing, deep recession? I still don’t think so. Of course, the economic fallout will be geographically distributed. Some national economies will be hit much worse than others.

In this episode, we cover a lot of ground. Our main topics are the OPEC production cut and will it affect “inflation”, ISM and PMI reports in the US and briefly touching on China, and finally, US employment reports. This episode was recorded prior to the Non-farm Payrolls report on the 7th. Of course, we tie everything back to bitcoin and what this information means for bitcoin adoption.

On OPEC, we rewind the clock to October 2022 and examine the current cuts in the context of the previous cuts. Are they the same or different? After the October cuts, price continued to fall. Should we expect that today? What other lessons can we draw from the OPEC move? All these things are answered in this section on OPEC.

As for the ISM and Purchasing Managers Index we discuss the shocking deterioration of the US numbers. All aspects of the ISM report point to imminent recession, manufacturing, non-manufacturing and services. 

Chinese numbers are less bad at first glance. However, since China is the manufacturing powerhouse, the manufacturing numbers are of utmost importance. Those numbers came in at 50, meaning no change and a deterioration from last month’s modest improvement. The numbers are not showing a reopening surge as many hoped, and if coupled with the OPEC cut, we can see that players will deep economic knowledge are hedging a China bust.

Lastly, the employment data out of the US is also showing a turn around. The JOLTS data, measuring job openings and hirings were really bad. The ADP data, the private sector alternative to the government surveys, is showing a notable slowing in the employment market, but less dramatic than others.

In this episode, we discuss the biggest news items in bitcoin and money for the week. It was a bit of a slower news cycle, with people absorbing the bank failures and market movement. How are stocks rallying despite the looming financial crisis? That is the major question we answer in this episode. Expectations for the market and actual market performance are directly conflicting. The most anticipated recession in history will likely not turn out as all those people expect. 

There is also a whole lot of talk about the decline of the dollar. Alternatives like settling in Yuan, or forming a whole new currency like a new Gaucho between Argentina and Brazil, or a BRICS currency are all over the headlines. Is this new or normal and we are just noticing it now?

Another topic this week is FEDNOW. We address the controversy surrounding its launch in July. Is it a CBDC? Absolutely not. FEDNOW is a payment rail. It competes with PayPal, not bitcoin or the dollar. This is not the Federal Reserve moving toward a CBDC, it is the Fed offering a payment solution.

In this episode, CK is back for a HUGE week in central bank and bitcoin news. We cover this week's FOMC policy decision and press conference with Federal Reserve Chairman Powell. We discuss all the central banks raising rates in the face of a banking crisis and bank runs. Next, we discuss the crackdown by US officials on the bitcoin space, with Wells notices being sent out widely to many companies, and the Economic Report of the President devoting two entire chapters to understanding and spreading FUD about bitcoin.

A lot is happening right now and we try to cover it all. CK and I have been positive regarding Chair Powell in the past, but it seems as if central bankers have lost their minds tightening while liquidity is evaporating rapidly. We agree that the recent attacks on scams in the space, are not meant as an attack on Bitcoin, and in the end everything is good for Bitcoin.

Lastly, we look at several charts of bitcoin, the stock market, US Treasury yields, and the dollar. We like to do this to ground our conclusions in the market truth. We are emotional animals and can be pulled this way or that very easily. It is the charts, the market price, that is the source of truth much more so than our emotions or individual rational interpretations. What do the charts show us? Things are not as dire as the headlines would imply.

Of course, it takes time for economic conditions as a whole to be translated across the market, but we do not see the patterns in the charts that lead up to the type of crises many are predicting. In fact, Bitcoin is rallying and stocks still have higher highs and higher lows. Treasury yields point to a liquidity crisis similar to 2019, and the dollar is not telegraphing acute global stress.

In this episode, we are joined once again by Nolan Bauerle to bring you reporting on this crazy week in bitcoin and macro. Of course, we cover Credit Suisse, their long history of corruption and current crisis. Next, we tie this into the US banking crisis that started with FTX, to Silvergate, then Signature, with Silicon Valley Bank also failing along the way. Lastly, we discuss February’s CPI and PPI out of the US to see if that can be added to an analysis of the global financial situation giving us a more clear picture of what is happening.

Throughout the entire episode, I try to build a narrative that what we are seeing in the bank failures, bailouts, and CPI/PPI crashing is a deflationary story. This is a tale of credit tightness and collapse, bailouts notwithstanding. In this context, bailouts only confirm the dire state of the private financial system and lead to deeper tightness and stagnation.

This episode goes perfectly in the entire multi-year theme of Fed Watch. While bitcoin is a hedge against inflation, we don’t find ourselves in an inflationary scenario. What we are living through today is the end of a multi-decade inflationary credit bubble, and what do all bubbles eventually do? They bust. That will look like a monetary shortage, not a monetary abundance.

In these credit bust situations, money without counterparty risk is a great advantage. I’m alluding to bitcoin here, as it is both a hedge against inflation and credit deflation. The great thing for bitcoin, as well, is it has a long way to go in its monetization, meaning its dollar value will expand greatly as it absorbs monetary functions. 

As people are looking for a monetary alternative during periods of monetary shortage, it is an absolute advantage if that alternative asset is nascent and its value can expand dramatically as it is adopted. For instance, people that adopt gold in this role only expect perhaps a 5x upside, where bitcoin could see 100x.

In this episode, recorded last week prior to all the Credit Suisse Drama, was very on point. We are joined once again by Nolan Bauerle. Our topics include a lengthy discussion on Bitcoin price and other macro charts like currencies and commodities. We read through several articles on the Silvergate, Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse banking troubles making insightful commentary throughout. Lastly, we watch a couple Jerome Powell clips from his testimony in front of Congress.

We make several very accurate calls on prices throughout the macro complex. Oil and bitcoin in particular standout.

In the Powell testimony, we highlight two important lines of questioning. One is focused on the NON-monetary policy aspects of high CPI, namely sanctions, energy markets, and government spending. Powell dodged the questions as well as he could, saying they were a political football he didn’t want to play with. But it remains that people are starting to realize that nearly all the CPI effect was driven by non-monetary issues.

The second important line of questioning came from the unlikable Senator Elizabeth Warren. She pressed Powell on how many people his targeted effect on employment would put out of work. It got a little bit heated. Even though Warren is an enemy of bitcoin, it was interesting to see Powell unable to answer decidedly.

In this episode, we are joined once again by Nolan Bauerle. Our topics are very interesting in this episode. First, of course, we cover the bitcoin charts and some other important macro charts, like the dollar, the stock market and the US 10Y Treasury. 

Second, we get to our headline topic, a brand new bill in the US Congress that calls out an attempt for a digital dollar by executive order. The bill tries to block that. We read through it and other important material straight from the Federal Reserve’s own report on CBDCs from 2022.

Lastly, we scan through the rapidly evolving situation in regards to China. Not only is there diplomatic and military news, but there is a ton of financial news. We focus on the latter. Story #1 is about Chinese banks getting a tongue lashing from CCP, putting them in their place as lubricant providers, not part of the "new elite". Story #2 is about China falling out of the top-3 most attractive destinations for foreign investment. In this episode, we discuss US CPI for January 2023 and use different commodities and macro prices and indicators to understand and interpret the data. We look at things like the bitcoin price, the dollar, energy and shipping costs. The latter two were the main drivers behind the 2021-2022 CPI rises.

What we found was that there are no price pressures whatsoever in the economy. Nothing that could duplicate the effects from the last couple of years.

We also talk about the updates to the CPI calculations and try to come to a conclusion, whether they pushed CPI higher in January or lower.

Then we get into a new policy statement by the ECB, which threatens European banks that, although not legally binding and not even through the approval process, banks must comply with the new Basel limits on bitcoin in reserves. Of course, this is crazy, and going to lead to tons of problems when bitcoin pumps.

In this episode, we discuss niche economic data from the Federal Reserve called the Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey or SLOOS report. Then our conversation turns to the UK’s attempts to build a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) which they have dubbed “Britcoin”.

The SLOOS data shows lending practices and state of the market according to a very broad survey of banks, mainly in the US but it does include some foreign banks. January’s data was categorically bad news.

There are two sides to a lending market, the lender and the borrower. Then the survey breaks it into two broad types of loans, business and households, and then further into two more components for each of those sub-types, commercial and industrial (C&I) and commercial real estate for business, and consumer real estate and consumer loans for households.

Almost every component was worse in January. Lending standards by banks tightened nearly across the board, and demand for loans fell in each.

This is a bad sign because, as we discuss a lot on the show, lending is where money is actually printed. If lending (AKA credit creation) is slowing rapidly, that puts immediate deflationary pressure on the economy.

Next we look at the UK’s attempt to build a CBDC. At this stage, their attempts remain confined to convincing people there is an actual need for a CBDC. Despite the fear-mongering rhetoric from many quarters, they are about as far away from a CBDC launch as they’ve always been.

In this episode, we dive into all the central bank policy announcements this week, focusing on the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank (ECB).

To set the stage for analyzing central bank monetary policy discussion, we look at the several macro charts, including bitcoin, the S&P 500, the dollar index (DXY), and US Treasury yields.

The Federal Reserve raised its Fed Funds target range to 4.50% to 4.75%, emphasizing stable prices, inflation fighting, and employment. To help take us through this announcement, we listen to a couple clips of Chairman Jerome Powell at the press conference following the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.

Powell also signaled that more rate hikes are coming, using the term “ongoing increases”. It’s a fine line the Fed has to walk. Since they don’t do anything mechanical to set rates, the forward guidance and word choices make all the difference.

After a long discussion about the Fed’s decision, we jump to the ECB’s latest monetary policy change.

The ECB raised their policy rates by 50 bps, as expected. However, they did slightly shift their forward guidance more dovish, differing from the Fed’s choice to remain rhetorically more hawkish. Instead of confirming two more 50 bps hikes eluded to in past statements, the ECB confirmed only one more before reevaluating.

They also introduced “Climate QE” as part of their balance sheet reduction strategy. Each month, they allow a certain number of securities to mature and roll-off their balance sheet, reinvesting the remainder into new securities including corporate bonds. They will now take into consideration companies’ ESG-type score, when deciding which corporate bonds to buy.

In this episode, CK has returned from his trip to India and joins us for a big day of new economic data from the US.

On deck for this episode is a quick discussion about the US debt ceiling and then we get into the main topic in my opinion, US GDP numbers for Q4 2022 and the whole year.

US real GDP in Q4 rose at an annual rate of 2.9%. That is a pretty significant number for people expecting recession any day now. For the year of 2022, real GDP increased by 2.1% These numbers are in-line with my predictions of returning to a post-GFC (Great Financial Crisis) normal of low growth and low inflation.

The last topic of today’s episode is all about Japan’s new monetary bazooka, an amendment to “Principle Terms and Conditions for Funds-Supplying Operations against Pooled-Capital.” That’s just a long label for a program where the Bank of Japan (BOJ) lends money to banks to buy government bonds so the central bank doesn’t have to buy them directly. They’ve made it possible to give these loans at negative interest rates, and extended the term to up to 10 years. That means, they could pay banks to buy JGBs.

In this episode, I was once again joined by special co-host Nolan to go through the upcoming US debt ceiling debate, December US Producer Price Index (PPI), bitcoin at Davos 2023, and a new report from the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) discussing how to stop bitcoin. It was a fun and jam-packed episode.

The December PPI was a shocker, -0.5% month-over-month for the headline number. Goods PPI was -1.6% and energy was -7.9%. These are large negative numbers and when paired with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December show a seachange in these so-called inflation metrics. Everything is pointing to a rapid and sudden reversal of these price measures.

Davos had a panel where they discussed the “crypto” industry, because they are too scared to say “bitcoin” and give it special attention. We breakdown several aspects of what the panel said. I can sum it up as follows, ‘we need to find a way to regulate bitcoin so our client who want to invest and make gains still can. So, we don’t want to kill it. We also, don’t want to give it legitimacy through regulation, because that will eat away at our control of money. But it’s not all that important anyway, so don’t attract attention to it by treating it as such.’ Something like that.

The BIS report was very interesting. They are looking for ways to stop bitcoin, but they had to conclude that it can’t be banned or contained. It can be regulated, but that brings up a myriad of very hard questions that they don’t know how to answer yet.

In this episode, I was joined by special co-host Nolan (@countBTC) to go through December CPI data and its effect on markets including bitcoin.

The big development this month in CPI was the negative print. Yes, you heard that right, the general change to price level in December was -0.1%. This was a great opportunity to drive home the massive shift we’ve seen in CPI in the last 6 months, that without a doubt tells us CPI rises have peaked and were transitory all along.

Nolan and I broke down some of the components of the CPI like shelter and energy. Overall, the only component that is really holding up the CPI at this point is shelter. If we take shelter out, aka Ex-Shelter, December CPI was -0.8%, and 5 out of the last 6 months were also negative.

Next, we take a look at the market reaction. Those charts included bitcoin, S&P 500, and US Treasury yields.

The last topic we cover is whether or not these CPI numbers will affect the Federal Reserves upcoming policy decisions. The market is rapidly shifting toward expecting only one more 25 bps hike. We will have to wait and see.

Fed Watch is a macro podcast like no other, with a clear contrarian thesis of a deflationary financial system’s breakdown leading to bitcoin adoption. In this episode, CK and I break down the current price chart of bitcoin along with some fascinating points about bitcoin volatility. We have open and honest discussion about the price that you can trust, because this show isn’t about shilling bitcoin, it is about understanding the macro environment which bitcoin finds itself in and how bitcoin is reacting to that environment.

Next, we cover the US manufacturing ISM data. For the second straight month in a row, US manufacturing has contracted. This was also the ninth straight month of falling numbers. They happened to stay positive until November, but now we have those two months of negative prints.

We also tackle one of the jobs reports this week, the ADP. ADP measures payrolls not employees, which is an important nuance to consider. It increased in December by 223,000 jobs! This is a mixed signal, we have falling manufacturing but rising payrolls.

Another conflicting signal we cover this week is the crashing US trade deficit. At first glance, if the trade deficit crashes, one would think that is a positive and means increased activity in the US. However, the reason for the crash is that imports crashed more than exports. Both were negative moves, but the net sum is a crashing deficit, which is a horribly bearish indicator that doesn’t match with the jobs reports.

The last thing we discuss on the day is ECB’s latest blog post by Panetta where he trashes “crypto” and lumps bitcoin in with all the garbage. The interesting part of the blog post is when he calls for “a risk-free and dependable digital settlement asset”, which is what bitcoin exactly is. Of course, he finishes that sentence by calling for a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). What a joke.

In this episode, CK and I go on a wide ride through 2022 in a Year in Review episode. We spend the first half of the show talking about bitcoin’s major events of the year and how it affected price.

The second half of the show is dedicated to central banks actions this year. We watch an amazing video from Lagarde from July of this year, when she was grilled on how she will bring down the European Central Bank’s (ECB) balance sheet. Her response was, “it will come.” What a great example of central bank incompetence. We cover what the Federal Reserve has done this year, and briefly talk about the other central banks.

Lastly, we go through several macro charts, starting with the dollar, then oil and other commodities, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and finally, we end on US Treasury yields. We examine how these numbers have moved throughout the year, and what they tell us about what may lie ahead.

In this episode, CK and I dive deep into yield curve control (YCC), after a discussion of bitcoin and other macro charts like the dollar and US Treasury yields. What is YCC, what are its aims, has it been successful, can it ever be successful? Of course, we look at this both from a general perspective but also specifically in the case of Japan, since the big news this week was the Bank of Japan (BOJ) relaxed their YCC band from +/- 0.25% to +/- 0.5%.

Our last topic of the day is the 2nd and final revision to US Q3 real GDP. It increased from the original estimate of 2.9% to 3.2% annualized. This is fairly big news, because so many people are utterly convinced the US is about to experience a horrible and deep recession in 2023. The main influences in Q3 and likely in Q4, have been a plunging nominal GDP and plunging price effects. Therefore, it becomes a race of which falls faster, GDP or “inflation” as to whether the real GDP will be negative or positive.
