In the latest episode of Boz To The Future, Meta CTO, Head of Reality Labs, and host Andrew “Boz” Bosworth talks to the legendary film-maker, explorer, and inventor James Cameron. 

James Cameron is best known for writing, directing, and producing critically acclaimed blockbusters like “The Abyss,” “Titanic,” “True Lies,” “Aliens,” and “The Terminator” and “Avatar” franchises. Beyond producing some of the most iconic science fiction films of all time, he is also an inventor and explorer, having built a marine robotics platform that enabled him to go into the depths of the Mariana Trench, and pioneered some of the groundbreaking visual effects that have advanced filmmaking techniques. 

Together, Boz and James cover the future of 3D entertainment, the promise of generative AI, and how these technologies could enhance filmmaking and creativity.

In today’s episode, Boz is joined by StatusPRO Founders Andrew “Hawk” Hawkins and Troy Jones. 

StatusPRO, the company behind the immensely popular game NFL PRO ERA, was founded by former athletes Hawkins and Jones. They leveraged their experience by developing Pre Game Prep, a training product for NFL club coaches and players where they signed the Baltimore Ravens as their first client. They then moved on to develop NFL PRO ERA which is the first NFL- and NFLPA-licensed football simulation game. 

Together, Hawkins, Jones, and Bosworth go deep on immersive sports and technology, talking about the massive potential of mixed reality to bring a unique, “only in MR” experience to sports fans where they can really feel what it’s like to be an offensive or defensive player for their favorite teams. 

They talk about the nuances between building a training sim and a game for consumers, how AI will transform gameplay, and how the lessons from playing team sports have transformed their approach to leadership and managing teams, as well as Hawkins’s fearless predictions for the NFL’s 105th season.

In today’s episode, Boz is joined by internationally renowned media artist and director Refik Anadol.

Anadol is a pioneer in the aesthetics of data and machine intelligence. He’s been creating with algorithms since 2008, with projection mapping on an architectural scale since 2010, and in virtual reality since the days of the first Oculus developer kit in 2013. His work locates creativity at the intersection of humans and machines and uses the massive datasets around us as his primary material, with the neural network of a computerized mind as a collaborator. Millions of people have been drawn to his exhibits that generate new forms in real time.

In today’s episode, our host, Head of RL, and Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth is joined by Jason Rubin, VP of Metaverse Experiences.

Rubin is an industry veteran who started out as co-founder of the gaming studio Naughty Dog, where as a programmer and director he led work on titles like Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter — two pioneering games from the early days of the PlayStation platform. Following that, he worked across a range of gaming, social media, and technology businesses before landing at Oculus in 2014. And he’s played an integral role in the development of the VR gaming and content ecosystem ever since. 

With Meta Quest 3 coming in the fall, Boz and Rubin get into what to expect from our next generation of VR headsets, as well as some of the biggest VR games coming this year, including Asgard’s Wrath 2, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Arizona Sunshine 2, and more. They also discuss why they both love photography so much, what’s the most slept-on VR game out there right now, and the graphic novel you need to be reading in 2023.

In today’s episode, our host, Head of RL, and Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth is joined by John Carmack, former Reality Labs Consulting CTO who is currently heading up AGI at Keen Technologies. 

John Carmack is one of the most influential technologists of our time, and his work has shaped multiple generations of software and platforms. As a co-founder of video game company id Software, Carmack developed titles including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, which pioneered new approaches to technologies like 3D graphics and online multiplayer gaming.

But Carmack’s impact goes well beyond gaming. In 2013 Carmack left id Software to become the CTO of Oculus VR, where he helped the company pioneer a new era of virtual reality devices. In 2014 Oculus VR was acquired by Meta and Carmack played a key role in the development of the VR technologies that Meta has developed ever since, which formed the foundation for its long term vision to build for the metaverse. 

In short, if you’ve ever played a video game or worn a VR headset, you’ve experienced John Carmack’s legacy. And now, after stepping down from his role at Meta at the end of 2022, Carmack is setting off on a new phase of his career, founding Keen Technologies to work on the pursuit of artificial general intelligence. There’s plenty for Carmack and Boz to talk about, and they cover it all this week, from the incredible new era of AI that’s emerging today to his philosophy on programming, building great software and making users happy.

As you’d expect, Boz and Rabkin take a deep dive this week into all things VR—starting with some context around our brand new Meta accounts. If you missed the news: In August, we’ll begin rolling out a new Meta account structure that gives people more flexibility and control in VR. You’ll no longer be required to log into your Meta VR devices with a Facebook account. They discuss why Facebook logins became standard in the first place, and why Meta accounts are a better long-term solution. No surprise, it all comes back to how best to build a community and find friends in VR.

But of course, Meta accounts are only the first of many topics covered this week. Having been with Meta for most of its existence, Boz and Rabkin also talk about VR and the metaverse as the latest “shift” for the company. How fast is it growing? In Episode 7 of Boz To The Future, Reality Labs VP and incoming Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth speaks with RL Director of Neuromotor Interfaces Thomas Reardon about the more intuitive inputs we’re building for future computing platforms like AR glasses. For generations, humans have been adapting to machines and learning how to use the various inputs available. In the future, technologies like EMG at the wrist will help decode electrical signals from our muscles based on very small movements of our hands or fingers — and eventually just from the intention to perform a gesture. Those signals can then be used to translate physical actions that we’ve already decided to perform into digital commands in order to directly control a device. It’s a much faster way to act on the instructions that you already send to your device today when you tap to select a song on your phone, click a mouse, or type on a keyboard. It’s exciting work that could transform the way we interact with computers in the future.
