The internet has grown exponentially for over 30 years and will soon surpass 30 billion connected devices. Yet, even for its age and the all the connected devices, the Internet of Things remains a 30-year-old infant. And like an infant, IoT needs guidance. It needs to be shown how to communicate and exchange data, taught how to make decisions, and be managed and looked after.
The evolution of wireless mobile networks has driven a proliferation of IoT devices. Now entering the 5G era, IoT will have a major growth spurt, ushering in billions upon billions of new devices for innovative applications, getting real jobs, and solving real-world challenges. It is expected that 5G and IoT will drive productivity in the way that electricity transformed the American manufacturing industry in the 20th Century – boosting productivity growth by increasing the efficiency of traditional operations. But to harness the potential of IoT, we need ways to manage and teach IoT how to be the productive engines that will power a digitalized industrial revolution.
In this episode of Cisco Champion Radio we’ll explore the growth of IoT applications, the challenges of managing multitudes of devices, and the reasons why 5G and IoT are the key ingredients for Industry 4.0.
