In this episode I speak with Steph Kallstrom. Steph was born in Peru and adopted by her mother and raised in Canada. As for most of us equestrians she fell in love with horses the first time she saw them and went into the world of Hunter/jumpers. Steph is a big part of the voice of Black Equestrians. And she has so much to teach us, if we can stop and listen. I have been waiting with great anticipation for this chat from the moment Steph said yes and booked in to have her interview. Steph is someone whose voice I listen to. Every time she posts on her socials or writes a new blog I read up and take note. I always learn something new. Steph is a minority in our equestrian world in many ways. She had a choice to stay in her lane and keep doing her thing and be happy enough. As you will hear in this interview, she is busy enough already, she didn’t need to take on another cause. But this is not just another cause for Steph, this is her life, she writes from experience and her perspective always teaches me something new. As a white woman I can only use my imagination for a lot of the racism that black equestrians encounter on a daily basis. And a lot of it is not a big event trauma, it’s the little things every day that are ever present and eat away at the most basic need we all have as humans, the need to belong. And it’s not just giving me perspective that I admire and learn from Steph. It’s how she writes and the feeling I get when I read her work. In Steph’s words I hear a strong and very intelligent Woman who is fierce and will not be bullied into submission by those trying to dull her words and make her sit down and wait her turn. She reminds me of the wild horses making trainers change their ways as they will not submit to the old traditional training methods. I love reading Steph’s work as I strive to be a voice in the way that she is. Her words are thoughtful, heartfelt and moving and always, every single time they are the truth. She calls out anyone who tries to shame or stifle her. That’s what I mean by fierce. Riders needed one hand to hold a sword and fight, so their horse needs self-carriage with the rider using one hand for the reigns.Anja videoed the best modern dressage horses in the world and slowed the video down to show us all, that the movements they were making and how they are executed are not true to form.We talked about how in modern dressage comps the horse who is best ridden does not win. It’s the horse who is the best natural mover, who may not be ridden as well as the others, that wins. Everything is in reverse.I asked how in the world we can begin classical dressage competitions to overtake the modern dressage competitions. Mark is a man who grew up with horses and like so many from this podcast, started to question the training methods he had learned while travelling overseas. He saw a lot of push button horses that were shut down and he got curious as the driving pressure seemed to be shutting them down. And as happens so many times when you begin to question things, he was led to books written by Mark Rashid who gave him permission to take a different direction. He changed his main training method to “How can I help?” he realised that like Tom Dorrance said, a horse follows a feel not getting chased by it and his new way of training was born.It’s really interesting to hear that Mark began to see more shut down horses than ever when he started hosting clinics. We had a great conversation about shut down horses and he gives a lot of tips and examples and a lot of things to think about. She has developed a tool on how to recognise the 24 behaviours indicating pain in the ridden horse.And she is backed by all the science you could possibly ever need.I could read out all Dr Sue Dyson has achieved in her lifetime thus far but it would probably take me 20 minutes to get through it all, and I’m not exaggerating! I’ll shorten it somewhat to give you an idea.Sue is a qualified vet who went on to specialise in clinical orthopaedics and lameness and poor performance in horses. Sue has been awarded fellowships PhD’s and is a Founding Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.Sue has lectured internationally and published widely on equine orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging. She has published more than 310 refereed papers in scientific journals, relating to lameness and diagnostic imaging in the horse.Sue is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Equine Veterinary Journal, Equine Veterinary Education and acts as a regular peer reviewer for a large number of journals.Sue was been a long-standing member of Council of the British Equine Veterinary Association and is a past President. She has also been a long-standing member of the Board of the World Equine Veterinary Association and Vice-President.Sue has been awarded far too many prizes to list and has been made an honorary member of Societa Italiana Veterinari Per Equini (SIVE), Italy. Sue was inducted into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame.Sue also holds the Instructors and Stable Managers Certificates of the British Horse Society (BHSI) and has competed at advanced level in both horse trials and show jumping, producing horses that have subsequently competed successfully at the Olympic Games and World Equestrian Games. She is a former veterinary advisor to British Eventing. Sue is veterinary advisor to the Saddle Research Trust and to Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre.And that folks, is her CV cut down to about 5%.Sue as you can see is not only a vet but she is an accomplished horsewoman who knows that to find the real issue with a horse you must do the basic check that most vets do then you have to see the horse ridden to see if the rider has any biomechanical issues that are effecting the horse, then she may even ride the horse herself to see if those issues are still present with a balanced

Ginger heads out there and helps out.This book tells the story of the residents and horses that Ginger helps and how they grow and change together, beautifully wound with the telling of Ginger’s own story from her childhood. And as happens so many times when working with horses and humans in this way, Ginger found that she needed to be here helping these people and horses just as much as they needed her. I believe it’s one of the most powerful and beautiful things on the planet. Thanks to Nina who on Instagram told me about Chris, once I took one look at his website I asked for an interview, I knew he’d have some gems for us all.Chris grew up in a home that was not safe and as a sensitive child honed his skills in reading body language like so many of us have done from these types of upbringing. He also learned that the lack of congruence was not safe either, what people are saying and their actions were not aligned, this does not allow us to relax, we cannot rest in our nervous system, we are living in our fight flight mode. We have choices in this situation as a child, fight, leave or shut down. A lot of people I know chose to shut down. Chris was brave enough to leave and this is what eventually led him to a life with horses.When Chris started working with horses people told him that it was not like he was learning to train horses, it looked like he was remembering horses. I believe this is the skills that he honed in his early life in a not safe environment about body language. Horses spoke his language and he spoke theirs.I have always believed that as horse people we are doing the best we can with the information we have, this is why I started the podcast, to get more information out into the world so that when we know better we can do better. Paul is a scientist. He is actually the Chief Scientific Officer of EquiSec who are one of the few places in the world you can test your horse for PSSM2.Recently I was made aware of a disease called PSSM1 in a friends horse, as she is my horse, Gypsy’s half-sister I got her tested as well as she was exhibiting some of the symptoms. Gypsy came back negative but as I am who I am and I do what I do, then my interest was peaked. And this happened because as I asked more and more people about PSSM1 I realised there was little to no awareness of this condition. So I decided to find someone who did have knowledge. This is how I came across Paul and his work.Most of the podcasts that I do are of value to share as they can support changes to training and handling of horses all over the world. This podcast is one of the most important ones for you to share as every single horse person in the world needs to be made aware of this disease and if you are ever buying a horse, this test needs to be done if your breed is on the long list that is knows to have had the disease. Black Lives Matter Pass the Mic

As you will all be aware there is a movement finally getting the air time it deserves, it’s the #blacklivesmatter movement and it’s important to take a moment to talk about it.As a white woman I have stayed quiet for some time as it is so difficult to know what to say. I want to speak up and out for black lives in both the US and Australia, but I don’t want to say the wrong thing or disrespect anyone. So I’ve donated to gofundme legal accounts for 3 Indigenous court cases looking to find answers to black deaths in custody. I post a lot on my personal social media pages and always speak up to those who post racist comments or get in on the all lives matter argument.I’ve since reached out to African American people in the horse world but they seem to be inundated at the moment and I don’t get any replies. I will keep trying, this does not have a time limit. If you know of any people of colour working with horses in any way please let me know.Usually I only interview people working in gentle and ethical ways with horses but I believe that there is racism in the horse world and it runs deep and that people of colour are not given the opportunities that we as white people have been given. They may not even know that our way exists. I also believe that in order to make change in the world we need to invite everyone in, especially those who are in the minority in the horse world. We can’t make change by excluding people because we see pain in the eyes of their horse or because we don’t like the way that they train. We make change by inviting those people in and with love and respect, hearing their story and introducing them to the possibilities.So if you know of anyone who would like to be heard and tell their story here on the podcast then please get in touch with me.You will notice in the intro of this podcast I do an acknowledgement of country. This is one way that I show respect at all times to the first Australian’s and their culture and people. I wanted to do it from the outset of my podcast but didn’t know exactly how to do it respectfully, so I waited until I interviewed Dr Tauri Simone and asked her advice.I do the acknowledgment of country as it is an aboriginal Australian creation that they use and have shared with us as white Australian’s, I believe that when you are given a gift of the culture of your land, the least you can do it use it with respect. I don’t make huge changes or do it my way. I show it the respect it deserves and deliver it in the way they have done for thousands of years.I searched for a long time when I started this podcast for indigenous horse trainers and found absolutely no one. In 2018 NAIDOC week which is an acronym for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee the theme was Because of her we can.This is where I saw the work of Dr Tauri Simone where she researched the influence of aboriginal women on the Australian pastoral industry. It took me weeks to find a contact for her as she is not on social media, I had to go through her university website then finally found her on linkedin. She then months later when she logged onto LinkedIn agreed to an interview and we arranged a time. It was always tricky as she lives on a station in Western Australia and may or may not have internet coverage on any given day or may be out bush working. But we got there eventually.I wanted to replay this interview once again as it is the one I am most proud of, in all the interviews I have done being able to bring the culture of the land I live on to the world makes me very proud.It is also important to hear what first Australian women endured when colonisation occurred. Tauri and I talked off mic about how she kept the interview and the story positive but the research and interviews and accounts she read during her research were heart breaking and she almost gave up so many times as the pain was so strong for what her ancestors endured at the hands of white man.So as you listen to this p

So I dived in and began this podcasting journey and it’s been amazing to be able to make such a positive change in the lives of so many horses from all over the world.My passion to build my business was to literally make the world a better pace by selling natural and sustainable products, sourcing products from trusted suppliers and making some myself with the planet that both us and our horses eat from and gain out nutritional needs from, was always in the forefront of my mind.However just like in life, things need to be sustainable in more ways than just the products that I have for sale and for the information given over this podcast. It needs to be sustainable for me, the person who spends my life putting countless hours into these passions. While life had taken a toll on my health last year, and then the breakdown of a relationship meant I had to stop for a few months. This year Eden River Equestrian and this podcast Come Along for the Ride need to be able to sustain me and my son and my horses and animals. Otherwise it needs to all be shut down. Because the truth is, it is not sustainable for me. I make absolutely no profit from these two ventures and I have been putting time and energy into them for over 2 years now. I am not only not profiting, but I am running at massive losses and as you know, this is not sustainable.If you could see the messages I get and the information that I give to people via email and messenger you would easily think I was making a hefty profit, people’s lives have been changed, horses have been saved as their humans finally wake up to another way. The trainers I interview and the sponsors on my podcast all do well financially from this venture and for this I am eternally grateful and very proud of the positive impact I have made. But to go on like this with no profit to myself is just another form of self-harm, and I’m done with this very dark part of my life and story. To continually give to others without receiving in return is no longer what I am willing to endure in any area of my life.So I am here to ask you, what needs to change? Starting out in showjumping in her native country of England, she came to Australia to visit her Dad and decided to make a life here.Angela was one of the first licensed female jockeys in Australia. Now her story up until this point would make an excellent episode in itself. However, it gets even more interesting when she decided, after seeing so many horses who were not able to be helped by modern medical methods, when she herself was always back on the horse quite fast from her chiropractic treatments and the herbal remedies that her chiropractor gave her, to go on and study herbalism and body work for both humans and horses.This led her to a career of giving back to horses in quite a fascinating way. Angela took 7 years to develop a technique she calls hair testing. This is not taking hair and putting it into a machine and getting a report back. This is about connection with the horse on a deep level to find the cause of the symptom. In herbalism Angela learned how to treat the whole being instead of just the symptom so she developed this method to give her this edge and be able to get real results faster than she could without them. There was no need to do hundreds of dollars worth of tests to try and find the problem, she created a method to get right to the source.It might all sound a bit hard to believe, but after 20 years of results and thousands of cases of success under her belt, Angela is definitely the real deal. As a Horse Herbalist Angela has treated top performance horses including the partnership she sponsors Shannan Goodwin and her horse Astro who are competing in dressage at Grand prix level.This episode is full of great information for how we can all understand our horses a bit better and see them as whole beings. Through most of this interview I had a lump in my throat and at the end of it I just wanted to reach through the internet, all the way across the ocean to America and give Kim an enormous hug and say “My word you’ve been through a lot”.Kim Walnes knows what it’s like to live your dream at be at the pinnacle of the horse riding world winning Rolex on her horse the Grey Goose in 1982. She tained with internationally renowned Jack LeGough and rode at Badminton. She has also ridden as a double to Melissa Gilbert in the movie Sylvester.However in 1991 she also experienced the lowest of lows when she lost her daughter who was murdered. I now right.Kim then later had a car accident where she had to be revived, her explanation of this time is incredible, her daughter was there, she wanted to stay but it wasn’t her time.Kim is one of those people who was born part horse. At the end of last year I separated from my partner and Oliver and I are staying with my sister down in the Riverina in NSW for now until we can get some finances together to get back to Qld and start a new life. I’ve learned an enormous amount in the last few months about other people not behaving in the way you do. I thought we could separate and have an adult conversation and divide assets and work to both thrive and move on through a difficult time. I was very very wrong. Even though I am going through a steep learning curve, Oliver and I are very safe, safe from harm and safe from the fires raging in Australia at the moment. We drove about 1500km from Qld down to the Riverina along the coast and I saw the devastation from the fires first hand. The fires had crossed highways and burned so much land, it was black for about 30km with small patches of green where they had worked so hard and saved houses in the middle of these catastrophic fires.We were nowhere near the fires as we travelled but the smoke was everywhere. There were no days travelling when I did not wake to be reminded of the destruction happening to people, animals and especially the native animals that were unable to flee.In Australia now people have just got into action to help horse owners get the supplies they so desperately need. If you are in Australia please check with your local Vet, produce store or Horseland, these are a few who are taking donations for horse people and shipping them to those in need.I have also set up a gofundme page for Horse Owners Affected by Australian Bushfires. In my opinion Vicki is changing the way people all over the world, see horses with what they consider to be bad behaviour. In 2017, Vicki Wilson was the first New Zealander to win the coveted World Championship colt starting competition at the Road to the Horse in the USA. Vicki named her horse Kentucky and brought him home. Their journey is an inspiring story of a friendship which will take them together into the future, this story you can read on Vicki’s website. Vicki went on to win the Road to the Horse 2018, making her the back-to-back World Champion of Colt Starting.Vicki has a load of firsts at The Road to the Horse, but the one I personally love the most, is that she is the first person to ever use body work on their colt. It’s the old saying you can’t be what you can’t see.Once Elaine’s eyes were opened to this new way of being there was no going back for her, she then travelled to Australia and once home in Ireland she travelled to the UK to find a new way to train her horses.Elaine is a natural go getter in the world. She doesn’t seem to believe in can’t, she sees an opportunity and says yes, or makes a suggestion herself, and then figures out what has to happen next.Elaine is also an entrepreneur, she is the CEO of her company Chocolate Lab Aps. She has written 4 books, 3 of them on horses and horsemanship, one is called Ozzie The Story of a young Horse, it’s about her grey pony that she named after her journey in Australia and learning from Australian trainers, I've just read it and it's a lovely journey of how to train a problem horse. You can find these books on Amazon.So it’s absolutely no surprise to me that after being involved with a Mark Rashid movie in the US, she decided to teach herself how to become a movie maker.The Mark Rashid movie, Out of the Wild, which Elaine was the Executive producer, won the Directors Choice Award at the 2016 EQUUS Film Festival in New York.Elaine then went on to make a short film about Steve Halfpenny from Light Hands Equitation in South Australia. This film has been selected for 10 international film festivals, and won 11 awards, including best director, best cinematography and best documentary.The next natural step for Elaine was to make a feature length film about Steve Halfpenny, this film called Steve Halfpenny, Light Hands Equitation has just been released. I watched the film and it is beautifully done. Steve is a gentle and kind man with horses and the movie gives you a real sense of the type of horsemanship he does and how he was worked long and hard to make the world a better place for horses. With this movie Elaine has done her mentor proud.Elaine has now decided to expand her film making skills to incorporate anyone who is working with horses in an extraordinary way. Sandy has always had a place in her heart to rescue horses and find them a loving home. She hasn’t ever seen a problem horse, just misunderstood horses who need some time and kindness.Sandy has worked for many years in land conservation so knows a lot about how to take care of the land and is someone who has spent her life giving to others.When she was asked to take over the SEQ Brumby Association she jumped at the chance to do her part and for the last few years has been bringing in, retraining and rehoming Australian brumbies for life in a domestic home.There is a lot in the news at the moment about the Kosciusko Brumbies. The Brumby bill has just been passed and will serve to protect the Brumbies and acknowledges the part they play in the history of Australia. Their numbers will be managed, and the aim is to strike a balance between conservation of the brumbies and the land where they are grazing. If their populations become too big they will be trapped in the most humane way possible and given to associations like SEQ Brumby and retrained for domestic life.After hearing Sandy’s story about the incredible nature of our iconic Australian Brumbies, my hope, is that we can all open our eyes and our hearts to these incredible horses and have a think when it’s time for us to purchase our next horse. I certainly have an eye on one as my next horse, with 4 horses currently I will have to wait a bit before taking the plunge. One of the reasons I chose to do this podcast is because I believe that everyone has a great story to tell. We have all lived interesting lives and I love to hear the path people have taken to get to where they are.Cristina is one of those surprise packages that I was fascinated by! She has a wonderful story to tell about her childhood in Spain. She recounts being a small and timid child and how her mother, who did not want her to miss out on a life with horses, decided she should learn to ride on a pony, instead of on a large horse as was normally the way children were taught in her country. Her mum brought a pony from England for Cristina to learn to ride on and, sometime later, one summer, her sister began offering riding lessons on him. In just a couple of months she was booked out! Thus, soon after, with mum at the helm, they began the first children’s riding school to use ponies in Spain.Cristina went on to compete in eventing and came very close to representing Spain at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics. She trained in England for several years and, although she missed out on Olympic selection, she represented her country at 3* CCI Events, including the Young Rider European Championships. Her level of riding, as you can see from the pictures on my blog, was right up there with the best!Life then took her to New Zealand and subsequently Australia where after some years she came to work at horses and people magazine. Once she decided to become an owner of the magazine with Maxine Ellison, who you will hear from on next weeks episode, the magazine began to change. Her family were well known horse people and she was able, through hard work and support from her family, to go through the ranks of the horse world and work at a high level of dressage, to the highest level of natural horsemanship where she worked internationally with Pat and Linda Parelli among many other internationally renowned trainers.Mel is one of those people who keeps asking questions, she never settles for less. It seems she needs to go deep and make sure the horse is alright on every level as her deep need to connect fully with the horse and make a true partnership comes before the end performance result she is seeking. Angela Davison is The Horse Herbalist, she has spent her life and career with horses in many different ways. Starting out in showjumping in her native country of England, she came to Australia to visit her Dad and decided to make a life here.Angela was one of the first licensed female jockeys in Australia. Now her story up until this point would make an excellent episode in itself. However, it gets even more interesting when she decided, after seeing so many horses who were not able to be helped by modern medical methods, when she herself was always back on the horse quite fast from her chiropractic treatments and the herbal remedies that her chiropractor gave her, to go on and study herbalism and body work for both humans and horses.This led her to a career of giving back to horses in quite a fascinating way. Angela took 7 years to develop a technique she calls hair testing. This is not taking hair and putting it into a machine and getting a report back. This is about connection with the horse on a deep level to find the cause of the symptom. In herbalism Angela learned how to treat the whole being instead of just the symptom so she developed this method to give her this edge and be able to get real results faster than she could without them. There was no need to do hundreds of dollars worth of tests to try and find the problem, she created a method to get right to the source.It might all sound a bit hard to believe, but after 20 years of results and thousands of cases of success under her belt, Angela is definitely the real deal. As a Horse Herbalist Angela has treated top performance horses including the partnership she sponsors Shannan Goodwin and her horse Astro who are competing in dressage at Grand prix level.This episode is full of great information for how we can all understand our horses a bit better and see them as whole beings. But the best part, for me, was hearing all of the stories of horses that she helped along the way. Anna Minogue Equine Dentist

When I choose people to come and work with my horses in any way, I look around for someone others highly recommend, then I check their credentials, and then I look for something else. What I look for is a complete passion, almost an obsession, for the work that they do. Someone who lights up when they talk about their work. Someone who can make you almost as excited as they are about the work that they do. And these people certainly see what they do almost as an honour, who feel blessed to be able to do so much to give back to horses in some way.In this episode I speak with Anna Minogue, who is an Equine Dentist, and Anna is one of those people I speak about above. In the interview you will hear the passion in her voice and if you miss it at all, just wait until we talk about brushing our horses teeth, that made her very excited indeed!I also chose to speak with Anna as she spent a long career initially as a vet nurse, so she lived in the word of pharmaceuticals and especially sedation in working with animals. Yet as an equine dentist she only uses sedation if she absolutely has to, every 200 horses or so. This really peaked my interest and I just had to speak with Anna to see how and why she made the transition to equine dentistry and how she is able to work so gently with horses doing what can be an invasive treatment for horses.She decided to get herself educated on horse behaviour and learned some techniques to help a horse feel at ease with her before putting a rasp in their mouth and waiting to see what would happen next!You will hear stories of some of the horses she has helped and how she loves our horses almost as much as we do. Kirsty Hagger Willowvale Spanish Mustangs

In our very first conversation here at Come Along for the Ride you will hear from Kirsty Hagger of Willowvale Spanish Mustangs who decided that she would be the first ever person, and so far, the only person ever, to import this critically endangered breed to the southern hemisphere.This is not only an incredible story about a woman who brought the first ever Spanish Mustang horses to Australia and is thus far still the only breeder here. It is also a story of transition from traditional dominant methods of horse training, to natural horsemanship, then to a very gentle way of training and being with horses where relationship and choice are paramount.I have 4 horses and when I asked the photographer to come and take photos for the cover of this podcast I thought that Gypsy’s mother, Kiowa would be the cover shot as she is so photogenic.Little did I know that Gypsy had other plans. She brought herself into position for the photo and proceeded to stare straight into the camera and gave us the shot we were after!It seems she had her own plans to get her face and the Spanish mustang breed known.So it seemed only fitting that the first ever podcast would be about this beautiful breed and Kirsty who was the first person to bring them to our shores.Kirsty speaks about her life with horses, the one horse, Woody, that changed everything for her when she was younger and who changed the way she trained all horses. She talks about her Australian Brumby Mare Sienna who made her change her ways even further to have to be so gentle as even looking at her was far too much pressure for this traumatised horse to handle.After years of seeing soundness and confirmation problems in many horses here in Australia, Kirsty came across the Spanish Mustang breed.This led her to a lifelong love and obsession with the breed. Kirsty tells us how she travelled across America and how she chose the horses, or rather how they chose her, who have been the foundation of her breeding stud here in Australia.She goes deep into the breed and the type of horse they are, the type of human you have to be to own one and the type of training they need in order to thrive. She also let’s us know the horses that she has up for sale at the moment, just in case you became as enamoured for the breed as I did when I first met them all those years ago.I have known Kirsty for many years and I am thrilled to be able to bring you her story.
