Conversations With Matt Dwyer is a music podcast that focuses on the lives and work of legendary, established and emerging new artists. The interviews are not your typical Q&A format but an unfolding organic conversation that shines a light on the lesser explored corners of an artist’s work, life, triumphs and challenges. Some past guests included Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Van Dyke Parks, Lou Barlow, Donita Sparks of L7, Boots Riley and Jenn Wassner of Wye Oak/Flock Of Dimes. Conversations With Dwyer was also the catalyst for John Lurie selling his series ”Painting With John,” to HBO.

I conducted this interview with Greg Saunier on April 26th 2022 to research a documentary I was trying to put together about Spotify and stream streaming services exploit the labor of musicians. Sadly the project didn't come to fruition but the insights of Greg Saunier and profound and important. I don't think many people take for granted that they can throw down $15 bucks a month for a streaming service, have unlimited access to music and how little of this money makes it into the pockets of the artists.

Dan Iead is a pedal steel guitarist and guitarist who has play who was a founding member of The Broken West. After The Broken West split Dan went on to play with a long list of impressive musicians including but not limited to Norah Jones, Valerie June, Cass McCombs, and Matt Sweeney. Dan joins Dwyer to talk about discovering the pedal steel guitar, what it means to be a supporting musician, his transition into filmwork and why New York is where it's at for him as a musician.
Opening Song, "Untitled," by Dan Iead.
Dan's Website
Quotes about Dan:
“Dan is one of the best musicians I’ve ever worked with in almost 30 years of playing music — he might be THE best. He’s as technically proficient on his instruments as anyone I know but more importantly he has a magic touch — a real feeling in his playing — that is very elusive, very rare. He’s incredibly smart and knowledgeable about music but also very intuitive and instinctual. He makes everything he plays on better. AND he’s one of the best songwriters/composers I know (though he likes to keep that talent hidden).“ Ross Flournoy (Broken West/Apex Manner)
“Dan is one of the most thoughtful and talented musicians I know. His playing is always on point, in the pocket and vital, with nothing extraneous or excessive. He has a great smile and laugh and a cutting, no-nonsense East Coast sense of humor. I miss hanging and playing with him!" - Andy Cabic Vetiver
Valerie June:
"When I grow up, I want to play music like Dan Iead! Give him anything with strings and he can make it sound like you're listening to Mother Nature's evening song symphony while watching the sunset across a vibrantly colored sky. No sunset is exactly the same though they are all beautiful. The same can be said of Dan's playing, even if he's playing the same part, it will always have a unique signature sweetness that somehow keeps each note alive and as new as the first time you heard it. Dan IS the Music Man!"
Matt Sweeney:
"Dan is my favorite electric guitarist to see live- he never plays “licks”, he breathes all these unexpected fluid lines that are so satisfying. The (low key) Master."
Cass McCombs:
"I love dan iead. his playing is like his demeanor: cool and intelligent.”
Norah Jones:
“Dan always comes up with something unexpected and perfect. I remember hearing him perform one of his songs for the first time and was struck by the unique melody. It was beautiful and haunting and also wonderfully different. I love playing with him for that reason. He can play anything and will if you ask him, but the creative streak of the unexpected beauty is the best cherry on top.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dan Iead a number of times with various artists. Whether he’s on guitar or pedal steel his contributions are always tasteful, thoughtful and executed beautifully. Along with being one of my closest friends he’s a unique and rare musician of the highest caliber.” Greg Wieczorek - drummer (Valerie June, Norah Jones, Aloysius 3)
Words can’t describe what Dan brings to a recording session or live performance. Not only is he one of the most tasteful guitarists and steel guitar players around, he’s also a great hang…has a keen instinct for finding tasty snacks and a fine tuned sense of humor, that just cracks me up. - Rob Barbato
“Everything about Dan’s playing and musicianship is on another level. He inspires you and always brings out the absolute best in everyone he gets on stage with. I can honestly say that I grew as a musician every time I played with him.”

This was a Patreon exclusive and Part 2 of my episode 232 conversation with the great Kid Congo. Often the initial recordings go much longer than what is released. I always put the extended interviews or part to on the patreon page. This lived on patreon for almost a years. You can go to themattdwyer.com for extra content. I will be releasing more patreon exclusive content for the holidays. There will be a blog that will tell you what is released and how to get it. The part one we went into a lot of Kid's history. Part 2 we dug a little deeper. Enjoy.
Kid Congo Powers is the co-founder of the Gun Club, played with the Cramps, was a Bad Seed with Nick Cave and of course Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. His influence and creativity is vast. Read more about Landback: All funds raised will go towards repatriating land back to Indigenous communities and to support the LandBack movement, to continue the acquisition of land titles for Indigenous nations to have legal standing under U.S.law to protect traditional territories. The LandBack movement is a regenerative, sustainable effort to center Indigenous knowledge and repair damages done to land and all people living here. The impacts of invasion, colonization, settlement and forced assimilation continue to have multi-generational impact upon us all. These impacts are varied, they are experienced differently and disproportionately, evident on the land and water, the changing climate and ecosystems. Reparations for what has been forcibly taken from Indigenous Nations must be grounded in ceding land; to end occupation and begin coexistence, with Indigenous leadership, to return to healthy and regenerative relationship with land.

I'm happy I have this document just not of me talking with Harold Budd but as a record of how joyous, open and warm he could be. One truly felt special in his presence. The the time we spent talking to him in his South Pasadena apartment was a blast. He, Kelly and myself had smiles the entire time. We discussed, the labels that have been placed on Harold's music, drinking wine and Harold sneaking into music clubs as a kid to see some of the great Jazz musicians. The loss of Harold Budd will takes a great deal of warmth and beauty from the music world and the lives of those who knew him. If you knew Harold I think this episode will help us remember how great he was. If you were a fan or didn't know his him or his music you will learn about a great artist and person.
