I have been following Ted's work for a while, and love his photography and his style. He also has one of the coolest voices on YouTube or the podcasting world! We had a great time discussing story telling and related topics around the creative process.

#32. Today’s episode is inspired by a book called Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind.
The book contains teachings based on a compilation of talks by the late Shunryu Suzuki, given at a Zen Center in Los Altos, California. It was published in 1970 and is one of the influential books of Zen in the Western World, although not being academic. What I’d like to do today, is to summarize some of the teachings of Suzuki and then see how we can apply those teachings to our photography and perhaps aid in the creative process. This may seem quite esoteric, but I would argue, it’s actually quite the opposite.

#14. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY, host Daniel Sigg has a conversation with German photographer Nicole Struppert. We will talk about minimalism in photography and in gear, and other topics.
About Nicole
Nicole Struppert’s photographic work focuses on geometric and minimalistic compositions and candid reportage photography. Her photographs are a testimony to her eye for form, composition and the observation of contemporary life.
Her architectural photography is atypical in its abstraction. Rather than showing wide-angle views, she focuses on the details in the designs. Fascinated by reading forms she takes small fragments of architecture out of context, recreates the subject and space to reveal a new meaning.
In 2019 she started to explore the visual narratives found in nature and landscapes to explore the transition and change of the journey in life.
Between 2012 and 2017 she worked on a long term documentary project about Shoreditch in East London.
Besides her personal and commercial work she has worked as a freelance photographer for the dpa:picture alliance, where she captured life around the Olympic Games 2012 London, and the US elections 2012.
In 2018 Struppert was the only female (out of 10) photographers from Germany who got published the book "Streetfotografie - Made in Germany" by the Rheinwerk Verlag. A book giving insights to inspire photographers who are interested in street photography
Her work has been internationally exhibited and published in several media .
Nicole lives and works in Munich.

#12. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY, host Daniel Sigg will discuss how the color theory, color for emotion and color as compositional element.
The initial theoretical discussion will be supplemented with practical examples and review of 3 images.
Color theory, color for emotion and as compositional element
It is an understatement to say that color is important. In fact, it is of upmost importance to photography. And we see in color. As Jay Maisel says: “Color is”.
Today’s photographs are typically taken in color although many photographic artists still choose to photograph in black and white occasionally, some of them exclusively. The difference between a color photograph and a black and white photograph is in some ways like night and day. They are two different techniques. A color photograph evokes a different emotion and potential connection with the viewer than a black and white photograph.
We talked about creative choice of black and white photography in greater detail in episode 8, feel free to check that episode out.
So color is important. But why is color theory important? One could argue we do not need to know about color theory in order to make good or even great photographs. And I would wholeheartedly agree. I think it is important to understand how the color models can help us perhaps more deliberately understand what might work in a picture, perhaps even determine a color palette, or perhaps even be more deliberate about composition, but also editing of imagery.
So my disclaimer here is that we will do a little theoretical excursion, but I do believe it is an important and useful one and one that we will in the end bring to practical application with several image example discussions at the end.

#10. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY, host Daniel Sigg will discuss some thoughts and considerations why to creatively pursue black and white photography. Daniel will also review two images from two photographers.
Today’s topic is big, and it will be very difficult if not impossible to do it justice in just one episode.
Ultimately it comes down to artistic choice on why to pursue black and white photography. Many photographers have been making that choice a priori in their image creation process. Daniel will discuss 12 considerations on why to photograph an image in black and white (B&W).

#7. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY, we will discuss American photographer Saul Leiter.
Biography excerpt from Saul Leiter Foundation
"1948 Leiter had begun to experiment in color, largely using Kodachrome 35 mm film past its sell-by date. His main subjects were street scenes and his small circle of friends. Leiter made an enormous and unique contribution to photography with a highly prolific period in New York City in the 1950s. His abstracted forms and radically innovative compositions have a painterly quality that stands out among the work of his New York School contemporaries. His earliest photographs in black-and-white and color show an extraordinary affinity for the medium."
Edward Steichen included Leiter’s black-and-white photographs in the exhibition Always the Young Strangers at the Museum of Modern Art in 1953. While Leiter also was working as a professional photographer and also did fashion photography, and while he had had many successes in his long career it was not until 2006, when his book Saul Leiter: Early Color was published by Gerhard Steidl in Germany led to an international breakthrough. This book became an overnight sensation with worldwide distribution and, accordingly to the Leitner foundation, firmly established the artist as an early pioneer in the history of color photography.
“I happen to believe in the beauty of simple things. I believe that the most uninteresting thing can be very interesting.” (Saul Leiter)

He is an advocate of film and creates his images using a wide range of formats—from 35mm to 4x5 large format. With a desire to help others learn more about the medium, Kyle created Analogue—a YouTube video series that focuses on both the craft and technique of film photography. #5. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY we will discuss the importance of photography projects (and also one of the most important photography projects of all time).
Photography projects are a fantastic way for photographers to focus some of their work, and to get and to stay motivated. As mentioned in episode 1, projects might be a way out of creative block.
So, what are projects?
We could define a project as a distinct and cohesive body of work that highlights the artists vision, has a theme and a concept. It should be executed in a cohesive style.
There are of course hundreds of ideas on what such project could look like, and only our fantasy and creativity is ultimately limiting us (and of course, our available time and energy).
We will discuss the many benefits of projects, give some examples and discuss some of the key elements of an artistic photography project. We will end the episode by discussing a project that transformed photography.

#3. In this episode of CREATE. PHOTOGRAPHY, host Daniel Sigg will discuss how limitation can spur creativity with Australian photographer and filmmaker Hashem McAdam.
Hashem discusses how too many options can hurt creativity and how limitation can paradoxically increase it. Since both of us are film photographers (which also is limiting in its own right), we briefly touched on that (and our favorite film stocks), and then wrapped up by discussing some of Hashem's favorite photographers. This also brought us to Saul Leiter who we both admire (and who will be featured in a future episode.).
The show notes contains a link to Hashem's website and social media including his YouTube channel.
