In January 2010, JoAnn Matouk Romain runs a quick errand to get gas, followed by attending a 15-minute prayer service, then she walks into the freezing lake across the street to take her own life. Or at least that's what police say. But from the very moment they notify the family about her case, they know something isn't right... and the deeper they look, they learn that nothing is what it seems.

Now an audiochuck original, Supernatural is back! Only this time, it's better than ever... it's So Supernatural.
After his sudden death in 2011, friends and family of Jack Froese received mysterious emails from his account containing personal messages and information only Jack could have known. Dubbed 'Jack Froese Emails,' these messages sparked speculation about the afterlife, communication from beyond the grave, and the possibility of messages from the other side. Despite attempts to explain the phenomenon through rational means, the mystery of the Jack Froese Emails remains a puzzling enigma, challenging conventional notions of life and death.

Described as one of the first antique hunters in the Anderson, South Carolina, area and beyond, this 35-year-old entrepreneur looked to the past to build his future. When on the hunt for his next treasure, Nick had two main things to consider: where did it come from, and what was it worth? More than 20 years later, present-day detectives are considering those same questions when figuring out which tips to follow in the investigation of his murder. It’s a case that’s developing in real-time, and as more leads roll in, the closer investigators are getting to the truth. Was it a jealous business associate or a threatened love rival? Which witnesses can really be trusted?

On June 8, 1989, the quiet Vancouver, British Columbia, suburb of Richmond was shocked when a body was found lying in the yard of an abandoned house. The victim was a 44-year-old nurse named Cindy James. She had been drugged and strangled. Her hands and feet had been tied behind her back. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police believed that Cindy’s death was either an accident or suicide. But in the seven years before she died, Cindy reported nearly 100 incidents of harassment. Five were violent physical attacks. Over time, the police began to doubt her stories. But Cindy’s parents never doubted that their daughter was murdered.

In the early morning hours of November 2, 2007, Justin Gaines walked out of a popular nightclub on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia and was never seen again. The investigation into Gaines' disappearance quickly went cold and remained so until 2015, when a man confessed to taking part in his murder. Though this detailed confession described what happened to Justin Gaines, who was involved, and where his body was placed, no arrest has ever been made. Host Sean Kipe digs into this story to find out what really happened to Justin Gaines and tries to make sense of the still ongoing investigation. But as Sean gets deeper, he finds himself in an underworld of drugs, money, and murder.

Since the release of CounterClock Season 1, Delia has received hundreds of requests from families of victims of violent crime. In November 2022, one message in her inbox stood out from the rest. It was from a middle-aged woman asking for Delia's help investigating the mysterious death of her 27-year-old brother from 1991. The message stood out for one big reason. The man's mangled body was found in an all-too familiar place to Delia. Eastern North Carolina.
33 years after Douglas Wagg, Jr. turned up on a lone stretch of railroad tracks in the middle of the night in rural Martin County, and over a year since Delia took on the case, the scope of what was really going on in the area during the 1990s has come into view. Who was Doug? How did he end up so far from home? Who was he last seen with? Was the train really what killed him? Why was his case never investigated?
The journey to find the answers to those questions has revealed a web of small town secrets that feel like fiction, except they're not. Over the course of the Season 6 investigation Delia has interviewed more than 45 people, spoken with convicted murderers in prison, and traced the origins of a disturbing pattern of behavior within local law enforcement that may have resulted in a decades-long cover up of multiple deaths. The investigation into what happened to Doug Wagg appears to be just the tip of a very large, very complicated iceberg that someone has worked hard to keep hidden for more than three decades.
Access to all episodes of CounterClock Season 6 is now available at the $10 and $20 tiers in the Crime Junkie Fan Club App.

Since 2014, the mysterious deaths of Joyce and John Sheridan have been a major topic of conversation in Skillman, New Jersey. And as you might expect from the title, the story I have for you today is not as cut-and-dried as certain city officials would have you believe.
In fact, the deeper I dove into this story, the more confused, shocked, and angry I became. This case could be a simple mishandling of an investigation, or it could be a corruption cover-up… time will tell.

After midnight on July 6th, 2012, three teenage girls walked into the thick Appalachian woods somewhere along the Mason-Dixon county line. Hours later, under the glow of a nearly full moon, only two walked out.
The very last time Dave and Mary Neese saw their only child Skylar was in a grainy black-and-white video. In it, she's sneaking out of her ground-floor bedroom in the middle of the night, her purse over her shoulder, her brown hair swinging as she hurries across the small parking lot to a waiting car.
What happened to Skylar Neese has become gothic American lore: the odd girl out in a vicious teenage triangle. But in the ten years since that fateful night beneath the West Virginia stars, a fuller portrait of what happened has emerged. From award-winning journalists Justine Harman and Holly Millea comes a gripping 10-part series featuring Skylar's family, closest friends, and law enforcement who lived the case—and are still living it.

Two harrowing stories – those of Asia Anderson and Walker Montgomery – illustrate how the rising digital threat of sextortion can impact anyone and forever change lives.
Resources:
Staying Safe:
Anyone who uses the internet risks encountering people who wish to cause harm. But you can take certain measures to lower the chances of this happening to you or your children.
What to know about online abuse and trauma
What to do when a predator contacts your child
Get Help:
If you, your child or a loved one becomes a victim of sextortion, try to remain calm. Remember, sextortion is a crime, and the predator is to blame, not your child or you.
Red Flags:
Remember that these red flags should not be taken in isolation. It's important to consider the overall context and the combination of behaviors you observe. Trust your instincts – if something feels off or uncomfortable, it's better to be cautious and seek advice or report the situation to appropriate authorities.

Reed Jeppson, a Salt Lake City teen, went outside to feed his dogs one Sunday afternoon in 1964 and vanished, with the dogs, into thin air. Decades later, his heartbroken family still has so many unanswered questions.
If Reed is alive today, he is 74 years old. He’s white, with medium blond hair and blue eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he was 5'6" and 140 pounds, and he had braces on his top and bottom teeth.

When 18-year-old Jade Winston is found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head in her Carrier Mills, Illinois, apartment in August 2007, the entire community is stunned, and investigators are split on whether she was murdered or if she took her own life. As rumors fly, a Coroner's Jury rules Jade's death a homicide. But 16 years later, the case is on the shelf, and her family is still desperate to know what happened… and praying that someone will give it the attention it deserves.
Letter to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul
(WHERE TO SEND)
Office of the Illinois Attorney General
Constituent Services
100 West Randolph Street
Chicago, IL 60601
Please also CC Saline County State's Attorney, Molly Wilson: [email protected]
Dear Attorney General Raoul,
I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and a listener of Crime Junkie, a true crime podcast that recently investigated the death of Jade Winston in Carrier Mills, IL.
Jade was an 18-year-old high school senior who died of a gunshot wound to the head while in her apartment on August 17th, 2007. A Saline County Coroner's Jury ruled Jade's death a homicide in January 2008. However, leadership at the Saline County Sheriff's Office have publicly shared their "personal opinions" that Jade died by suicide. While they maintain that the case is open, it's not active.
I am deeply troubled by the lack of progress. Mixed messaging, where an agency's public statements are not consistent with the official designation of a case, can erode public trust. This can lead to skepticism about the agency's competence or motives. Public statements can also inadvertently influence potential witnesses. If the public believes the investigating agency has already reached a conclusion, even informally, individuals might be less likely to come forward with information, thinking it might not be considered relevant. Meanwhile, Jade's family and the community are left in a state of uncertainty, and their faith in the justice system has been profoundly shaken.
The Attorney General’s Office can intervene in cases where there are conflicts of interest or when the complexity of the case demands a comprehensive approach. Given the nature of this case, I am respectfully urging you to have your office conduct a thorough investigation into this matter. By taking over this investigation, your office could bring fresh perspectives, resources, and a renewed commitment to finding the truth. Furthermore, your intervention would instill public confidence in the justice system.
I am hopeful that with your help, we can bring closure to Jade’s family, provide answers to a concerned community, and ensure that justice prevails.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

When a local news anchor vanishes in the pre-dawn hours, the entire community is struck by the irony. The person who typically broke stories in their small town was now the focus of the biggest missing persons case in the Midwest. In 1843, Daniel M’Naghten gunned down another man in broad daylight. But when he was taken to trial things got complicated. His defense argued that he shouldn’t be held fully responsible because he wasn’t in his right mind. However, the courts didn’t know what to do with that because there was no precedent for this kind of thing. So his defense team got to work putting in place a defense strategy that is still used, almost in the exact same way, almost 200 years later.

Please join us in writing a letter to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office calling for a formal independent review of the methodology used during Owachige Osceola’s autopsy.
Below you will find a prompt you can use and the address to send the letter to.
(WHERE TO SEND)
Mr. Gentner Drummond
Oklahoma Attorney General's Office
313 NE 21st Street
Oklahoma City, OK 73105
----
To Whom It May Concern:
I'm writing in regard to the criminal investigation related to the mysterious death of Ms. Owachige Osceola in September 2013, which is being conducted by the Norman Police Department.
As you may be aware, Ms. Osceola's cause and manner of death were classified by the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as "undetermined" despite credible evidence that she was intentionally strangled to death in the bedroom of her apartment.
After hearing concerns expressed by Norman Police Department investigators working this case and closely listening to details about the criminal investigation into her death as reported by Audiochuck Podcast Network's "The Deck," I'm deeply troubled that the medical examiner's office has been unwilling to reconsider its original ruling — directly hindering further investigative efforts to pursue justice for Ms. Osceola and her loved ones.
I implore the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office to reexamine evidence in this case and to insist that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner consider that Ms. Osceola's death was the result of a homicidal act. I also kindly request that this office publicly publish its conclusions in the matter.
Respectfully,
[YOUR FIRST & LAST NAME]

Recently divorced and living on her own in a new city, 27-year-old Owachige Osceola’s life was in a season of transition before she was killed in the bedroom of her Norman, Oklahoma apartment in September 2013. While the medical examiner who performed her autopsy concluded her cause and manner of death were “undetermined,” a detective who remains on the case today insists a killer has been allowed to walk free for nearly a decade.
Please join us in writing a letter to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office calling for a formal independent review of the methodology used during Owachige’s autopsy. Below you will find a prompt you can use and the address to send the letter to.
(WHERE TO SEND)
Mr. Gentner Drummond
Oklahoma Attorney General's Office
313 NE 21st Street
Oklahoma City, OK 73105

In 1958, John Brady, along with an accomplice, was accused of murdering his friend, William Brooks. John maintained that he had not taken part in the murder, that he was only part of a plan to rob the man. However, his accomplice turned on him and he was eventually found guilty. Though, there was something the prosecution was holding back that would completely change the way a jury would view the case. And when the shady tactics of the prosecution were revealed, a new legal precedent was set that aimed to ensure a fair trial to defendants.

Polly Klaas was taken from her own home in the middle of the night back in 1993. But had the legal system worked like it was supposed to, the man who took her never should have been walking free that night to enter her home. Her case went on to spark an outcry in the country for harsher punishment on repeat offenders. But when her case set the precedent for the three-strikes rule there was backlash no one anticipated.

An anonymous letter-writer antagonized residents of Circleville, Ohio for years, singling out the school superintendent, Gordon Massie, and a local bus driver, Mary Gillispie, as the focus of much of the vitriol. When Mary finds a booby trap with a loaded gun in 1983, the gun is traced to her brother-in-law Paul Freshour – but the letters would continue long after Paul went to prison for attempted murder.

When Megan Kanka went missing in 1994 her case exposed one of the holes in the sex offender registry. Yes, people were registered but that was only known to government officials, not to those living among potential predators. Had her parents known who was living right down the street from them Megan’s story might have ended differently. Instead, it set a precedent for community reporting.

When Jacob Wetterling went missing in 1989 one of the first thoughts police had, was to track down all the local violent sex offenders in the area to see if they could be potential suspects. But this was easier said than done because back then there was no centralized database for this sort of thing. Jacob’s case went unsolved for decades and his mom always wondered if her son fell through the cracks of a system without enough regulation. So, she worked to set a precedent that would require all sex offenders to be registered. Though, she would later go on to regret that work.

It happened in 2008 to Brandon Swanson, 2020 To Jason Landry, and 2021 to Daniel Robinson. A 21yo British woman is less than a month into a foreign exchange in Perugia, Italy when she is brutally murdered in her apartment. Everyone’s world is turned upside-down. And for the woman who found herself in the center of the storm -- and on trial for murder -- it has stayed that way ever since. My question is: Why, all these years later -- long after the courts have spoken -- are we still talking about Amanda Knox?

For years, David Hendricks was the walking embodiment of the true crime trope "The Husband Did It." After his family was brutally murdered in their Illinois home back in 1983, police were quick to zero in on him as their main suspect despite the lack of evidence and mostly because... nothing else made any sense. Decades later some still believe in his guilt but knowing what we know now can you still be so sure?
