According to the medical examiner, O’Keefe had died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. At first it seemed like a tragic accident, maybe a slip on the ice, a fall that ended in death. But as investigators dug deeper, things became far more complicated and Karen Read, O’Keefe’s girlfriend, became the center of the investigation. Evidence that there had been trouble in paradise in the romantic relationship began to surface, but so did other disturbing possibilities. What seemed like a domestic tragedy was quickly clouded by allegations of police corruption and cover-up, and an investigation that many believe was compromised from the start. Beverly Hills, located just southwest of the Hollywood Hills, was and still is a place that the rich, famous and glamorous choose to make their homes. Known for its opulence and luxury, the homes in Beverly Hills are some of the most expensive in the United States, with some properties worth tens of millions of dollars. But behind the country clubs, cocktail hours and shopping trips, there was something much darker brewing in a high end Beverly Hills neighborhood. On August 20th, 1989, business executive Jose Menendez and his wife Kitty were brutally murdered while sitting in the living room of their sprawling Mediterranean style mansion, and what seemingly made this tragedy worse was the fact that their two son’s, Lyle and Erik, were the ones to make the gruesome discovery of their bodies. Suddenly orphaned, the Menendez brothers were initially looked at with sympathy, but soon they would be on trial for the murder of their parents. Lyle and Erik didn’t deny that they had taken their parents' lives, but according to them it was because they were scared and broken down after a lifetime of abuse. At the time, most people believed this was a fabricated excuse, and the prosecution gave greed and money as the true motive. A tragedy and trial played out for the world on television, ending with both Erik and Lyle confined at the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego for life, with no chance of parole. Maya Kowalski was ten years old when her father brought her to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in October of 2016. The previous year, Maya had been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which caused her excruciating pain. Consistent therapy and ketamine treatments had gotten Maya’s condition under control, but she would have flare ups from time to time, and one of these flare ups brought her to the emergency room at All Children's Hospital, complaining of pain in her stomach. Maya would remain at the hospital for the next several months, against the wishes of herself and her parents, lawyers would later say. Her mother Beata Kowalski was accused of neglect and medical abuse, and by the time Maya was finally allowed to go home, her mother was dead, having taken her own life after being forbidden from seeing her sick daughter for 87 days. Maya’s family would go on to sue Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, claiming it’s actions led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life, devastated that she could not see her daughter and that she was being accused of abusing Maya. The Kowalski family also alleged that Maya was medically kidnapped, battered and abused while in the hospital’s care. Her mother Beata Kowalski was accused of neglect and medical abuse, and by the time Maya was finally allowed to go home, her mother was dead, having taken her own life after being forbidden from seeing her sick daughter for 87 days. Maya’s family would go on to sue Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, claiming it’s actions led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life, devastated that she could not see her daughter and that she was being accused of abusing Maya. The Kowalski family also alleged that Maya was medically kidnapped, battered and abused while in the hospital’s care. Investigators claimed the evidence suggested Mischelle had fought for her life, ran from her attacker and was pursued and caught before being returned to her car where she was shot three times in the back of the head. After questioning Mischelle’s boyfriend and friends, the case went cold until April 7th of 1993, when 17 year old Josh Kezer was arrested and charged with the murder of Mischelle Lawless. Kezer’s arrest was based on information provided to police by two jailhouse informants, and supporting testimony of a witness who claimed to see Mischelle and Josh arguing at a party the night of her murder, as well as another witness who placed Kezer at the scene of the crime. Despite the lack of physical evidence and the questionable credibility of the witnesses and informants, Josh Kezer was found guilty of second degree murder and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, sixteen years later Josh Kezer was exonerated when discovered that the eyewitness placing Kezer at the scene had changed his account of that evening multiple times. Kezer sued for wrongful conviction and won.

Despite the lack of physical evidence and the questionable credibility of the witnesses and informants, Josh Kezer was found guilty of second degree murder and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, sixteen years later Josh Kezer was exonerated when discovered that the eyewitness placing Kezer at the scene had changed his account of that evening multiple times. Kezer sued for wrongful conviction and won.

In the early morning hours of November 8th, 1992, 19-year-old nursing student Mischelle Lawless was found dead, just outside Benton, Missouri, on the side of Interstate 70. Investigators claimed the evidence suggested Mischelle had fought for her life, ran from her attacker and was pursued and caught before being returned to her car where she was shot three times in the back of the head. After questioning Mischelle’s boyfriend and friends, the case went cold until April 7th of 1993, when 17 year old Josh Kezer was arrested and charged with the murder of Mischelle Lawless. Kezer’s arrest was based on information provided to police by two jailhouse informants, and supporting testimony of a witness who claimed to see Mischelle and Josh arguing at a party the night of her murder, as well as another witness who placed Kezer at the scene of the crime. It was November 24th, 1971, the day before Thanksgiving and historically the busiest day for travel in the United States. A tall man dressed in a business suit and a thin black tie approached the flight counter of Northwest Orient Airlines at the Portland International Airport and requested a one way ticket to Seattle. This man gave his name as Dan Cooper and he paid twenty dollars in cash for his ticket on Flight 305, which he boarded with 35 other passengers. Cooper took his seat all the way at the back of the plane, he ordered a bourbon and 7-UP, and then he settled in for the short 30 minute flight which was scheduled to take off from Portland, Oregon on time at 2:50 PM, Pacific Standard Time. None of the other passengers, or the six members of the flight crew, noticed anything suspicious about this nondescript business man, traveling with a briefcase and paper bag, sitting quietly by himself in seat 18-E, but that would change shortly after takeoff, when this quiet and polite man notified flight attendant Florence Schaffner that he had a bomb, and he was hijacking the plane. Cooper wanted 200 thousand dollars and four parachutes, and somewhere between Seattle Washington and Reno Nevada, this man dressed in a suit and loafers leaped from a Boeing 727 into a dark and stormy night and was never seen again.

In April of 1987, 9-month-old Jacob Jeremiah Landin died suddenly from a subdural hematoma which had put pressure on his brain and caused irreversible damage. The medical examiner determined that Jacob had died from a blow to the head, and the autopsy revealed evidence of older wounds that were in the process of healing. A partially healed fracture of one of his ribs, another subdural hematoma that was in the process of healing, and a partially healed skull fracture; the medical examiner believed that these injuries were approximately three to four weeks old, and the overall picture suggested a pattern of abuse that the baby had suffered from for an extended period of time. Reportedly, Jacob’s mothers boyfriend confessed to hurting the baby, and he was arrested, but when investigators returned to the case in 2005 they found a labyrinth of missing information, missing files, and more questions than answers. There was no report of what this man had confessed to, and even though he was arrested for child abuse, it appears he was just let go. Now, Jacob’s brother Eric is on a mission to find out why.

Between the hot day temperatures, the freezing night temperatures, and intimidating predators such as mountain lions and bobcats prowling around, the Sonoran Desert is the last place you would want to venture out into without proper clothing or supplies, but it appears that this is exactly what 24-year-old geologist Daniel Robinson did on June 23rd, 2021. Reportedly, Daniel drove into the desert and was never seen again, although his vehicle was discovered on its side in a ravine almost a month later. But during the investigation, details began to emerge that added mystery to this tragedy; Reports from friends and family of Daniel’s odd behavior in the days leading up to his disappearance, all of Daniel’s pictures on Instagram being erased around the time he went missing, and evidence from Daniel’s vehicle that suggested foul play. Dozens of searches have been conducted for Daniel over the past 19 months, and although human bones and human remains have been uncovered, none of them led back to Daniel Robinson.

It was an unseasonably warm January afternoon in Baltimore County, Maryland when 18-year-old Woodlawn High School senior Hae Min Lee left school in her gray 1998 Nissan Sentra and headed out to pick up her six-year-old cousin from kindergarten before going to her job at the local LensCrafters. But sometime after leaving Woodlawn High School and before picking up her little cousin, Hae Min Lee vanished into thin air. Less than a month later, maintenance worker Alonzo Sellers was driving back to his job at Coppin State College and drinking a beer when he realized he had to use the bathroom, and it couldn’t wait. Mr. Sellers pulled over on the side of the road and walked deep into the woods to relieve himself, at which point he made a gruesome discovery. According to his later testimony, Mr. Sellers said quote, “when I looked down I seen something that looked like hair, something that was covered by dirt. And I looked real good again, and that’s when I seen what looked like a foot” end quote. Alonzo Sellers had stumbled upon the body of Hae Min Lee, she had been strangled to death by the bare hands of her attacker, and within a few weeks, the police would make an arrest for her murder. But, the suspect was a person that no one would have suspected capable of such a horrific crime, the ex-boyfriend of Hae, a sweet and smart 17-year-old named Adnan Syed. It was December 23rd, 2015, the morning before Christmas Eve, and most residents of Ellington Connecticut were getting their last minute holiday tasks completed before the season went into full swing. Richard and Connie Dabate got their two young sons on the school bus and then got ready to do their own thing for the day. By 8:30 AM Richard was headed to his job as a computer network administrator in Bloomfield, and Connie was getting dressed for her spin class at the local YMCA. It was a normal weekday morning, like any other, but within just a few hours, tragedy would descend on the quiet, upscale neighborhood that the Dabate family called home. By 10AM, 39 year old Connie Dabate had been shot twice and was lying dead in her basement, and her husband Rick was found by first responders tied to a metal folding chair. He claimed a masked intruder had attacked him and then murdered his wife, and for months the community mourned the loss of Connie. Everyone wanted to know who could have done such a terrible thing to a young mother, a woman who didn’t have an enemy in the world. There was very little information coming from law enforcement; all they said was that the community had nothing to fear, but people still had a lot of questions. It would be over a year before anyone would have answers, however, and during that time a case was built on following the money, the secrets and the electronic paper trail which would lead to the shocking conclusion and the answer to who could have done something so terrible to Connie Dabate and her family.

Her father Roland moved to Hickory North Carolina, a four hour drive away, and Faith remained with her mother and sister Roland who was eighteen years older than Faith and who felt as if she was a second mother to her baby sister. In high school Faith was very active, actively participating in many clubs and organizations as well as cheerleading, and she was also an honor student which earned her the Gates Millenium Scholarship, a program meant to promote academic excellence and provide the opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential. Faith was accepted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and she and her family had high hopes for her future. Faith knew she wanted to help people, especially children, by becoming a pediatrician or a teacher, and once she completed college she would become the first member of her family to hold a college degree. Faith had her whole life in front of her, and with her intelligence, excellent people skills and big heart, she would make a positive impact on the world. But on September 6th 2012, Faith’s bright light was extinguished. She was found beaten to death in the off campus apartment she shared with her friend, Karina Rosario. Faith was naked from the waist down, her shirt had been pulled over her head, and next to her a hastily scrawled note on a fast food bag was found. The note said quote, “I’m not stupid bitch. Jealous”. Since that day, Chapel Hill police have been tirelessly trying to find the person or persons who brutally murdered Faith Hedgepeth, who was just weeks away from her twentieth birthday. To her family Faith symbolized love and hope, to her friends she was a constant source of positive energy and fun, and the question still lingers today. Who killed Faith Hedgepeth, and why?
