Providence, Rhode Island, is the capital and the largest city in the state, known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and unique mix of old-world charm and modern urban development. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded in 1636, Providence was a refuge for those seeking religious freedom, which has laid the foundation for the city’s commitment to diversity and tolerance. The city is also home to some of the most prestigious universities in the United States, including Brown University, an Ivy League school, and the Rhode Island School of Design. With so many college students, you would expect Providence to also have a thriving nightlife, which can be found downtown where a variety of bars, clubs, and live music venues wait to welcome students who want to socialize and let loose in the evenings and on weekends. For such a large and busy city, you would also expect that Providence has its share of crime, and while the city does have some issues with violent crime, property crimes such as burglary and motor vehicle theft are far more common. But what happens when a basic carjacking turns violent for seemingly no reason whatsoever? In June of 2000, 20-year-old Jason Burgeson and 21-year-old Amy Shute found themselves in the crosshairs of five nefarious men who were prowling the streets of Providence, looking to get into trouble. Jason and Amy were spotted by a Providence police officer around 2:15 AM on June 9th; the couple was chatting in the parking lot of Tommy’s Bar and Grille in downtown Providence. Less than 12 hours later, their bodies were found slumped against hay bales at the Button Hole Golf course, located on the border of Providence and Johnstown, Rhode Island. They had been murdered in cold blood, and it was up to the investigators to figure out what had happened to them and why.

30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi left her home in Hawaii on November 8 with an ex-boyfriend. Her plan was to visit New York, but while on a layover in Los Angeles, she missed her connecting flight, and her ex-boyfriend continued without her. On February 13, 2017, 13-year-old Abigail Williams and 14-year-old Liberty German were murdered while exploring Monon High Bridge over Deer Creek in Delphi, Indiana. Daren Christopher Abbey has been arrested and charged with the murder of Dustin Kjersem. Police have still not pieced together the motive for the vicious attack, but they say Daren has confessed to the crime. They were able to link Daren to DNA left at the crime scene.

A small, quiet town in Missouri. A devoted mother caring for her chronically ill daughter. A story of love, sacrifice, and survival. Or so it seemed. But behind closed doors, beneath the layers of sympathy and kindness, there was a dark secret waiting to be uncovered. For nearly two decades Dee Dee Blanchard told the world that her daughter, Gypsy Rose, was dying. Leukemia, muscular dystrophy, seizures, vision and hearing issues, the list of illnesses and medical concerns was endless. Gypsy, a seemingly happy little girl with a huge smile, was bound to a wheelchair, fed through a tube, and showered with the attention and support of everyone around her, but no one really knew the horrifying truth. It seemed that Gypsy was perfectly healthy. She could walk. She didn't need a wheelchair to get around, and it appeared that she was being kept a prisoner in her own body, in her own home, by her own mother. The story goes that years of abuse, manipulation, and lies built up until they all came crashing down in the most unthinkable way: Murder. On the night of June 14, 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed to death in her home, and the prime suspect? Dee-Dee's innocent, smiling, happy, and allegedly disabled daughter, along with the man that Gypsy had been having a very adult relationship with. But nothing about this case is as it appears to be. Five people have recently been arrested in connection with the death of 'Friends' star Matthew Perry, including two doctors and people close to Perry himself. Last week on Crime Weekly News we talked about Bianca's Law, a law passed in New York that criminalizes the posting of photographs of victims of a crime on the internet. Bianca Devins was only 17 when she was murdered by a man she met on Instagram who took photos of the scene and spread them online - photos that are still used to harass her friends and family to this day.

While Marlene was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, a massive manhunt for the clown began. However, the police would soon find out Michael couldn’t be the killer—he’d been with a friend when Marlene was shot. On July 14th, 2019, 17 year old Bianca Devins was murdered by 21 year old Brandon Andrew Clark, a man she had met on Instagram and was in some kind of relationship with. After committing the murder, Clark posted a photo of Bianca’s body on social media before slitting his own throat, and posting a picture of that as well. Clark then posted a photo of himself laying over Bianca’s lifeless body. Clark was rushed to the hospital and was later charged with Bianca’s murder, but the photos of her still circulate on the internet, and still haunt her family and friends.

A family in North Carolina is left devastated when masked men entered their home in the middle of the night and assaulted them, stealing items and a car from the home. The intruders inflicted torture on the family, including the children, and asked for guns as well as money. Susan Smith made headlines in 1994 when she strapped her two young children, Michael and Alexander, into their car seats and drove her car into a lake, letting it submerge and drown them both. Beverly Hills, located just southwest of the Hollywood Hills, was and still is a place that the rich, famous and glamorous choose to make their homes. Known for its opulence and luxury, the homes in Beverly Hills are some of the most expensive in the United States, with some properties worth tens of millions of dollars. But behind the country clubs, cocktail hours and shopping trips, there was something much darker brewing in a high end Beverly Hills neighborhood. On August 20th, 1989, business executive Jose Menendez and his wife Kitty were brutally murdered while sitting in the living room of their sprawling Mediterranean style mansion, and what seemingly made this tragedy worse was the fact that their two son’s, Lyle and Erik, were the ones to make the gruesome discovery of their bodies. Suddenly orphaned, the Menendez brothers were initially looked at with sympathy, but soon they would be on trial for the murder of their parents. Lyle and Erik didn’t deny that they had taken their parents' lives, but according to them it was because they were scared and broken down after a lifetime of abuse. At the time, most people believed this was a fabricated excuse, and the prosecution gave greed and money as the true motive. A tragedy and trial played out for the world on television, ending with both Erik and Lyle confined at the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego for life, with no chance of parole. Recently, newly discovered evidence and testimony has raised questions of whether Erik and Lyle were being honest about the constant state of stress and fear their parents forced them to live under.

Kouri Richins is a Utah mother and wife who, in 2022, allegedly poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, with a fatal dose of fentanyl. She was arrested and charged with his murder in 2023, but not before writing a book for children on how to handle losing a parent. Now, her lawyer has filed to withdraw from her case, and she makes her first public comments since her arrest.

In November of 2023, the Tucson police department responded to a home on East Limberlost Drive where they found an 11 year old boy who an autopsy would later reveal had died from sepsis. 

Investigators would learn that the 11 year old, who suffered from multiple medical conditions, was completely dependent on his caregivers; his mother, 33 year old Ariel Lee Horn  and her boyfriend, 29 year old Charles Jackson McClellan Jr. According to the autopsy report, the child was found with extensive lesions throughout his lower body which were attributed to not receiving proper medical attention due to neglect from his mother and her boyfriend.

In 2019, 19-year-old Dylan Rounds and his grandfather purchased land together in Lucin, Utah, marking the beginning of Dylan’s lifelong dream to own and operate his own farm. Dylan spent two Summers getting the land ready to farm, and by the Spring of 2022, it was finally ready for the first crop. On the evening of May 27th Dylan worked later than usual, trying to get the seed planted before it rained and then on the morning of May 28th Dylan spoke to his grandmother, but this would be the last person to ever hear from Dylan. An arrest was made in March of 2024 and In April, skeletal remains found in a remote part of western Utah were identified as Dylan Rounds.

54-year-old Nicolae Miu, of Prior Lake Minnesota, was charged with first degree homicide in the death of 17-year-old Isaac Shuman who died during a scuffle with Miu and others. The incident occurred on July 30th, 2022 at the Apple River, and Miu’s defense team claimed he was acting in self defense when he stabbed Schuman and four others.

Police in Kern County, California arrested 28-year-old Rosendo Tellez on March 22, 2024 after they were called to the Amtrak station in Wasco after a person had been hit by a northbound train. Tellez reportedly was hiding one of the severed legs of the victim under his sweater.

We also want to remember NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, 31, who was tragically shot and killed while confronting repeat offender, Guy Rivera, 34. Rivera was a passenger in a vehicle when he was approached by Officer Diller and an argument ensued. Rivera would then shoot Officer Diller in the stomach under his bulletproof vest, killing him. Rivera already had 21 separate arrests according to authorities, 9 of them being felonies.

22-year-old Riley Strain was a college student at the University of Missouri where he majored in business and finance while holding an internship at Northern Mutual where he planned to work after college. In March of 2024, Riley and his Delta Chi fraternity brothers took a trip to Nashville, Tennessee for their annual Spring trip. The group arrived on a bus from Columbia on Friday, and that evening they all went out, enjoying Nashville’s colorful entertainment district. The night started with all the friends together, but at around 9:45 PM, Riley was kicked out of the bar they had been drinking at, and he left the establishment alone, telling his friends he was headed back to the hotel. Riley’s fraternity brothers never saw him again, and his disappearance sparked a very publicized search that would end in tragedy.

20-year-old Layla Santanello was last seen in her hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee on June 27th, 2023. 32-year-old Stephen Masalta of Fort Collins, Colorado was arrested in February of 2023 after officials received reports of a man going to local coffee shops and performing obscene behavior around employees and customers. 16-year-old Autumn McClure was last seen on May 10th, 2004 and was reported missing by her grandmother in Ormond Beach, Florida. In late February of 2024 remains were discovered at a mobile home park and DNA extracted from the bones identified the remains as belonging to Autumn.

Mother of five Jennifer Dulos went missing in late May 2019. At the time, she was going through a bitter divorce and custody battle with her husband, Fotis Dulos, and in 2020 he was arrested and charged with capital murder and kidnapping in connection with Jennifer’s disappearance. 63-year-old Thomas McDowell was sentenced to life in prison for first degree burglary, kidnapping and murder in connection with the 1986 disappearance of four-year-old Jessica Gutierrez.

On June 6, 1986, the mother of four-year-old Jessica Gutierrez woke to find her daughter was not in their Lexington South Carolina home. A police investigation that followed found evidence that someone had entered the home through the window early that morning before taking Jessica and exiting out the front door. Although there were multiple land and air searches, Jessica was never seen again. It wouldn't be until 2021 that the case would be reexamined, and a lead would soon be found.

Those who knew the Clancy family of Duxbury, Massachusetts would describe them as happy, loving, and completely normal. Lindsay Clancy was a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her husband Patrick worked as a consultant for a technology company, and by 2023, the couple had been married for six years and they had welcomed three beautiful children into their family: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan. On December 5th, 2023, 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina of Edna, Texas didn't show up to a Christmas parade she was supposed to attend with her cheer squad. Her mother Beata Kowalski was accused of neglect and medical abuse, and by the time Maya was finally allowed to go home, her mother was dead, having taken her own life after being forbidden from seeing her sick daughter for 87 days. Maya’s family would go on to sue Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, claiming it’s actions led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life, devastated that she could not see her daughter and that she was being accused of abusing Maya. The Kowalski family also alleged that Maya was medically kidnapped, battered and abused while in the hospital’s care. This lawsuit would bring to the light deeper issues at Johns Hopkins, issues that affected far more than the Kowalski family and lead many of us to ask the question; if you can’t trust those who take an oath to do no harm, who can you trust?
