Eight leaders of the East Belfast UVF crime gang have been stood down in extraordinary scenes aimed at cleaning up the image of an organisation now being funded to transition from a paramilitary grouping to a community-based political movement.
At the heart of the shock cull is the group's links to drug dealing which has long been a source of funding outside the official state monies being pumped in to the UVF since the ceasefire.
