Daily Bread for Kids

Shabbat Nachamu (Sabbath of Consolation) is the Sabbath that comes after the 9th of Av. It gets its name from the Haftarah in Isaiah 40, “Comfort, O comfort My people [Nachamu, nachamu ami].” It is the first of the 7 “Haftarot of Comfort.” The encouraging prophetic readings on Shabbat lead all the way up to Rosh HaShanah (Trumpets).

Our apologies for the late posting. (There's still a war here in the Middle East.) Today in History: The Prophet Ezekiel received a rebuke from the LORD for some elders of Israel in Babylon (see Ezekiel 20). In the year 586 BCE, the Babylonians burned the first Holy Temple and the rest of Jerusalem (see Jeremiah 52:12). In the year 70 CE, the second Holy Temple continued to burn (according to tradition).

Also, in 2005 CE, the Israeli military forced thousands of Jews to leave their homes and their land in Gush Katif in Gaza. Some in the Israeli government thought this would help bring peace for Israel, but it did not. The Three Weeks of sadness, between the Fast of Tamuz and the Fast of Av, come to an end.

The Fast of Av (Tisha B'Av) is the biblical “fast of the fifth month” (Zechariah 7:3; 8:19) and lasts from sunset to sunset. It's the saddest day of the year, when many tragedies happened. But in the Final Redemption, it will be turned into a festival. Today in History: All the men of fighting age who rebelled and refused to go into the Promised Land were condemned to wander 40 years and die in the wilderness (tradition, Numbers 14). In the year 586 BCE, the Babylonians destroyed the first Holy Temple (see 2 Kings 25:9). In the year 70 CE, the Romans burned down the second Holy Temple. In 133 CE, the Romans crushed the Jewish “Bar Kochba” revolt at the city of Beitar. In 1290 CE, King Edward I forced all Jewish people to leave England. In 1492 CE, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled all Jewish people from Spain. In 1941 CE, just before the 9th of Av, the German Nazis decide to try to kill all Jews. In 1942 CE, the Nazis began taking masses of Jews from Warsaw, Poland to kill them in camps.

Welcome to this special episode of “Daily Bread for Kids,” where kids take turns reading through Lamentations. The Ninth of Av is the saddest day of the year on the Hebrew Calendar. Both of God’s Holy Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed on this day. This year has been extra sad with war in Israel.

It is custom in Israel to read the Scroll of Lamentations, which the Prophet Jeremiah wrote when he saw the destruction of the First Holy Temple.

God promises that one day he will turn the Ninth of Av into a happy festival. Until then, we mourn with those who mourn. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Today in History: The twelve spies returned from Canaan (see Numbers 13:25–33). Ten spies gave a bad report about the Land, and persuaded the people to not go into it. In the year 67 CE, civil war broke out in Jerusalem, leading to its destruction.

Today in History: The Apostle Shaul (Paul) of Tarsus was killed in Rome on this day (according to tradition, Book of the Bee 48). Tradition holds that he was beheaded (Roman citizens were not crucified). It happened during the reign of Emperor Nero, after the great fire in Rome in 64 CE. Shaul wrote, “The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:6–7).

The Fast of Tamuz is a shorter fast on the Jewish calendar and lasts from sunrise to sunset. It is one of four similar fast days. The fast remembers the breeching of Jerusalem's walls. The Prophets promise these fast days will someday “become joy, gladness, and cheerful feasts for the house of Judah’” (see Zechariah 8:19). The "Three Weeks" of sadness begin, leading up to the saddest day of the year: the 9th of Av.

Today in History: Moses broke the stone tablets in anger because of the sin of the Golden Calf. He then destroyed the idol the same day (according to tradition, Exodus 32:6–35). During the Babylonian siege in 586 BCE, the daily Temple offerings stopped because of the famine (tradition). During the Roman siege in 70 CE, the Romans broke through the walls of Jerusalem (according to tradition).

Today in History: The memorial of Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson (of blessed memory), a Christian Zionist pioneer who died in 1947 CE (5707). Patterson was an Irish Christian, British soldier, hunter, and author. During World War I, he led the Jewish Legion, the first Jewish fighting force in almost 2,000 years. At his funeral in Israel, he was called “The Godfather of the IDF.”
